Louis Johnson was one of the first bass players to use the 'slap technique' in songs. Two years prior, The Bothers Johnson won a Grammy for their hit 'Strawberry Letter 23'. Louis Johnson would go on to record with other artists such as Michael McDonald's 'I Keep Forgetting' and Michael Jackson's 'Off The Wall' and 'Billy Jean'
Larry Graham correctly gets credited with inventing "slap", but Louis Johnson developed his method independently and unaware of what Larry was initially doing.
Wikipedia-The Brothers Johnson were an American funk and R&B band consisting of the American brothers George ("Lightnin' Licks") and Louis E. Johnson ("Thunder Thumbs"). They achieved their greatest success from the mid-1970s to early 1980s, with three singles topping the R&B charts ("I'll Be Good to You", "Strawberry Letter 23", and "Stomp!"
Quincy Jones produced The Brothers Johnson's first 4 albums. Louis "Thunder Thumbs" Johnson was Quincy's go to Bassist for sessions. With Louis recording and performing with Michael Jackson (Off the Wall, Thriller), George Benson, Patti Austin, Qunicy's own releases. Louis' basslines dominated the post-disco era. He also layed down bass lines for George Duke's mainstream cross over period, and Michael McDonald's famous "I keep forgetting (we're not in love anymore)" Louis is one of the 4 horsemen of "Slap bass". Total legend with amazing stage presence. RIP Check out The Brothers Johnson's "I'll be good to you", "Light up the night", "Ain't we funkin' now", or their cover of "Strawberry Letter 23"
Hadn’t heard this one in 50 years! But, I remember every nuance, every lyric, and how I danced the hustle…twirl, twirl! Love your chair dance! I’m right with ya!
The song was written by Rod Temperton a Brit (not a Britt😂) who also wrote Off the Wall and Thriller for Michael Jackson (guess you've heard those!). He also wrote hits for George Benson, Donna Summer, Michael Mcdonald and many others, including Heatwave a group he played in himself. You've probably heard the term 'British Invasion' (referring to the influx of British Music to the USA following the Beatles. I regard Rod Temperton as a British invasion on his own for his song writing ability.
I never paid attention to the lyrics. There was a time in my younger years when my booty and brain did not work simultaneously 😅😅😅. So it was either shake my booty or decipher lyrics. And you heard the beat in this song girl! My brain had no chance!😅😅
Steppin' out, the weekend's open wide - Fill it up, let's blast the jams and ride - While we're cruisin' around in the street - Listen up for the party in feet - Slap me five, that's the place we've arrived, it's alive... 💞😎
I’m a little late to the party and I’m sure it’s been mentioned already but you absolutely must watch The Midnight Special performance of “I’ll Be Good to You” from 1976.
1979 and 1980 had nonstop music that made 'every bodies' moving to the groove, Britt. I know this from experience. There were songs like: "Dancin' For Your Love" by Rufus featuring Chaka Khan "You Know How To Love Me" by Phyllis Hyman "Get On The Floor" by Michael Jackson "Is It Love You're After" by Rose Royce "Disco Nights" by GQ "Haven't You Heard" by Patrice Rushen And there were so many more songs. And the clubs were packed. Standing room only!
Hi Britt, careful going down that funk rabbit hole, it can get slippery. The Mighty Brothers Johnson! I've always thought they were such a paradox tho... the raw unbridled bass funk of Louis Johnson and George's smooth vocals. You can hear Quincy's masterful production making the tracks sound like Michael's Thriller in the house but then...that uncut funk of Louis' slap bass... funkin up the place ... so nasty make you wanna slap your...yeah u know what I'm sayin... do yourself a favor tho, if you haven't already, check out Strawberry Letter 23. Classic funk ballad but so silky smooth...
Featuring background vocals by Michael Jackson, and I believe it was produced by Quincy Jones. BTW: One of the guitarists is their cousin who was featured on the Talking Heads Rockumentary "Stop Making Sense". Great slap-bass solo by Louis.
They are singing about an all night street party. The two brothers wrote some of the funkiest songs of the time. Strawberry letter #23 is the big one you should check out
Here's some R & B Good Ones:👉 Cherrelle Norton aka Cherrelle "*Artificial Heart" (*with video)"Will You Satisfy" "When You Look In My Eyes"from '84 & '85 and produced by those 2 dynamic producers, song writers Jimmy Jam Terry Lewis worked with Janet Jackson Starpoint (lead singer Renee Diggs) 'Til The End Of Time" Alisha Itkin "Save A Little Love" Gladys Kinght And The Pips "Save The Overtime For Me" from 1987.Thanks Britt,Enjoy The Awesome 80s 🎶
I always loved these guys - especially Louis Johnson - THE EARLY PIONEER of slap bass (with Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins, he has still a learning VHS course on YT about slap bass); btw. he also played at lesser known tunes with guys like Michael Jackson "Off The Wall".
Beth here.... I'm 63 and we didn't care what they said either 😂 we just needed to move our booties when we heard this music. Still moving parts of my body listening to it now 😁
"Get the Funk Outta Ma Face!" was definitely one of their better songs in my opinion...we snuck it in during a school dance...the DJ wouldn't do it but he left for a smoke break and we hooked it up and everyone hit the floor! The teachers thought they were singing the "f" word instead of funk and were having an intense discussion about what to do but they let it play😂 it's worth a listen to!
Another one of my all time favorite songs !!! Takes me back to my youth!! And yep....didnt care what they were saying, just loved that funk!!!!! So glad that you enjoyed this as much as we all did back in the day!!! You're adorable!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
As stated in previous comments, you have to listen to Strawberry Letter 23 next. Be sure to put on your roller skates first, so that you can roller boogie your booty off!
Britt, your reactions are so awesome! I know you are a Christian...and a wife...and a mother. But, after this reaction, I just want to pin you to a matttress with this song in the background LOL!

@@PjRjHj thats why Id mentioned Johnson was 'one of the first'.
#1 skate song back in the late 70s - "We're gonna Stomp all night!". We would all stomp our skates when they said the word "stomp".

I was Jamin to this song back in 1980. Great song and memories.
Sooo glad I watched this! I'm from the 70's and we didn't hesitate to dance!!!
Yes..let's dance..not like that when this song was out..I'm 63..this brings back stomping all night
'Strawberry Letter Twenty-three' was THE BROTHER'S JOHNSON greatest hit...
1970s classic
Yep, the two brothers are singing lead (up front playing guitar in the red and blue) and the band. These were great times for music and dancing.❤
Hadn’t heard this one in 50 years! But, I remember every nuance, every lyric, and how I danced the hustle…twirl, twirl! Love your chair dance! I’m right with ya!
Rock on!

Their hit song Strawberry Letter Twenty-three' was produced by Quincy Jones ... hit #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Love these guys! The singer (George) and the bass player (Louis) are the brothers.

Check out Strawberry Letter 23, inspired Prince's "Raspberry Beret"
Thanks. It’s been way too long since I heard this. Loved your reaction to the bass drop. Now imagine that in a disco with a monster sound system

Louis had one of the great music nicknames 'Thunder Thumbs'!
Watching you enjoy yourself brings joy to my day.
I loved this tune so much, Me & a friend started a London pirate radio station called Stomp FM
Earth Wind & Fire September
Love this song!

Strawberry letter 23 is their big hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Featuring background vocals by Michael Jackson, and I believe it was produced by Quincy Jones.
BTW: One of the guitarists is their cousin who was featured on the Talking Heads Rockumentary "Stop Making Sense". Great slap-bass solo by Louis.
....the cousin's name is Alex Weir.
Correct, Quincy produced their first 4 albums, and Louis sessioned for other artists the Quincy produced like Michael Jackson
On drums is John Robinson who was a huge session drummer. Quincy Jones used him for many of the artists he produced including Michael Jackson

Well I mean you gotta go for Strawberry Letter 23,that’s what’s happening,
"Get the Funk Outta Ma Face!" was definitely one of their better songs in my opinion...we snuck it in during a school dance...the DJ wouldn't do it but he left for a smoke break and we hooked it up and everyone hit the floor! Gotta love some great funk! I’m laying in bed, but was still dancing. LOL
The two playing the bass and guitar up front..you will see .the two brothers singing
Oh how I miss the 70's and my time working at Studio 54. Oh and I still have the 12".
I had this single when it came out. I think I love this even more now than I did then🎉🎉🎉 loved your reaction 😊❤
Another one of my all time favorite songs !!! Takes me back to my youth!! And yep....didnt care what they were saying, just loved that funk!!!!! So glad that you enjoyed this as much as we all did back in the day!!! You're adorable!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for listening
Exactly! No one cares about the lyrics. It's all about the groove and then you get that it's party time. ✅
That's what you call slap bass when he seems to be assaulting his bass guitar as you keep saying.
Strawberry Letter 23
I'll Be Good to You
Are must listen songs from the Brothers...
I call my son's the brothers Johnston but they don't get the joke...
This band literally looks like my dad and his Vietnam war buddies😂😂
Ok 🔥🔥 soo many memories!! Next I Hear Music In The Streets by Unlimited Touch is must, must!!
💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
This was the total stuff when I wuz a kid!
I grew up with this stuff - never understood anything anyone was saying - no internet, couldn't google it - but it didn't matter!
As stated in previous comments, you have to listen to Strawberry Letter 23 next. Be sure to put on your roller skates first, so that you can roller boogie your booty off!
Another song that will make you wanna move and it plays in perfectly for you, it’s called Disco Nights by GQ! 😉
I'll check it out!
Great song! 😅
Britt, You are Crazy Fun and Cool Just Be You Britt! ...XXX
Sounds like DISCO to me!!!
Britt, your reactions are so awesome! I know you are a Christian...and a wife...and a mother. But, after this reaction, I just want to pin you to a matttress with this song in the background LOL!
You should give Let it Whip by the Dazz band a listen, if you'd like some good ol' fashioned funk.
Just listen to song..we just liked good music back in the day
Joy stick by the dazz band will make u dance
I dif dance to this back in 1980. But I was much younger then. Now at 69 I don't dance to anything. lol
Hello Britt you should react to Brothers Johnson's " Get The Funk out Ma Face "
When Louis assaults the bass, that _is_ a crime.
Hello, have you ever reacted to The Manhattans "We Never Danced To A Love Song?"
Definitely a mover! Can’t sit still when this plays.
They weren’t one hit wonders…….they had several hits……
If you wanna be a professional Reactor, instead of saying "I don't know what he said" try pulling up the lyrics...words are meaningful
And this is when you’re tired and 17 jobs!?
whole video was outta sight
di no mite!! 🎉🫵🏼😎
The pdc is quite the accomplishment 😂
