Its been 47 years since my father passed in his sleep at 57, I remember everything that day. Mum would take my brother and I to Sunday school then to the 11am service. That day dad turned up and went to church with us, after church, we went for a long sunday drive and had a picnic in a park. Then when we got home we had Roast lamb for dinner. Then only being 12 went to bed, that being the last time with Dad. As I am hitting my 60th in a few days and listerning to, The Living Years it could have been alot different if dad had lived a longer life. Maybe we could have had unspoken words that should have been sheared, I still Love my dad after all these years. But the greatest gift was looking after mum for 8 years and being with her when she passed back in 2011, and with all the words that needed to be spoken came to an end, with. I Love you mum - I Love you to Alex.

My daddy and I threw a hella drunk together years ago. Don’t get sideways, my daddy was a dignified, well respected man. We were just two big kids, having fun. A mountain cruise in the RV, stopping at every creek and lake, walking in the woods, finding “pet rocks”. Back home, to feed the cows and fish, and everyone getting pets. A walk through the orchards, the old crazy dog that wouldn’t let you touch him tagging along. Sitting under the shade tree in the lawn chairs, drinking rye whiskey from a mason jar, ( we ran out of beer, and too drunk to go get more). Then it got serious, we were drunk enough for confessions. We went back to the RV, and he broke out a bottle of homemade wine, and told me why he made the choices he made. I told him a lot of things he probably didnt want to know. We held each other’s hands, and cried together. This song hits me every time. I miss my little daddy. I have a pile of dead folks. But I cherish that day.

We all have regrets when someone we love passes away. It doesn't even have to be something that we didn't agree on. Sometimes we just don't say I Love You enough.

Awwww u actually get it! Yes it was the 80’s. The meaning IS very emotional. Great reaction and I’m so glad u younger people r getting this experience. My love of music started in the late 60’s so I’m partial to the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Everything from Roy Clark (badass guitarist) to Black Sabbath with Ozzy as my favorite! I thought those days were gone forever and all this awesome music wouldn’t be heard again. THIS is absolutely beautiful!✌🏻😎

My father died at 10am on June 12, 1996. My plane landed at 12:30 on June 12th to go to the hospital when my brother picked me up and told me he had died two hours earlier. I felt that in spite of his alcoholism and shortcomings, I had been a good son, but that moment has lived with me forever... it's been 28 years now and feels like yesterday

I thought the introduction of the middle aged choir was a lovely touch too, as they are the generation who those younger ones really need to speak to and open their hearts, before those older ones pass on, leaving their survivors with so may regrets as they grow older themselves. 🙋‍♂

The song, written by songwriter B. A. Robertson and Mike Rutherford, was inspired by Mike and B.A. realizing their fathers had died around the same time (Robertson's 11 days before B. A.'s son was born), and they later learned singer Paul Carrack's father had died when he was young (11), as well.
The video was filmed in October 1988 and features Mike Rutherford with his then-eight-year-old son, Tom.

It some ways it is reassuring to know that every generation has experienced what we have when becoming parents. Sure, generationally we dress differently, the baby raising trends are different but we mostly all try hard to give them a good life with that effort rarely recognised by our young. They critique the job their parents have done, never knowing, as they embark on parenthood themselves that the cycle will continue, no matter how hard they work and how hard they love.

If this doesn't make you feel, you may have a lizard heart.
There's a lesson for all generations here: We are not enemies because we don't agree. We're simply different...and isn't that a good thing?
P.S. I'm well past retirement age now, but I was 5th generation when I was born. Roots run deep in the south.
