Probably been said a million times before, but what makes an actor great isn't their looks or awesomeness, it's the ability to be someone/something they're not. And in this movie, George isn't acting as Bruce/batman, he's just being himself, dressed up as batman...
Batman and Robin was never intended to be a good Batman film. It's only reason for existence was to sell toys to kids and be more family friendly after the backlash from Batman Returns. This in turn limits the script in a lot of ways and doesn't give much room for Batman to expand character wise.
Weirdly enough, I agree that Clooney pulls off the Bruce Wayne Persona character more than Batman. It's honestly how I've felt about his version of the character for years.

You know Clooney might have been the worst batman, but his Bruce Wayne was awesome IMHO. Seriously, I loved the humanity he brought Bruce Wayne. He became like a father figure, and his scenes with Alfred were wonderful. He and Val Kilmer have the opposite problems, Val was great as Batman, but I didn't like him as Bruce Wayne, while Clooney was better at Bruce than he was Batman. Put them together, you would have the perfect on screen Batman/Bruce Wayne.
Kilmer should have played Bruce more like Ice Man from Top Gun. I don't blame Clooney for smirking when he talks about Alfred's health. It's a coping mechanism.
This all started because idiot parents were freaking out over Penguin spitting up black blood and dying in Batman Returns. WB wanted to get campy to keep their relationships with McDonald's, so they drove Burton away because of this. Camp went up in Batman Forever and they took it to another level in Batman and Robin. Clooney could've been a good Batman if the direction was different. The same can be said for Uma Thurman playing Poison Ivy. She just did what studio wanted, but she was capable of being more menacing than portrayed. Schwarzenegger was horribly miscast, but had his signature one liners. O'Donnell was a fine choice for Robin, but the writers made him a constant complainer. Alicia Silverstone was a big name then and was a very good actor, but she was so bad it wrecked her career. And finally, Schumacher was an underrated director who could've delivered a dark movie, but did what the studio wanted.
I feel kinda bad for the guy. Personally I don’t really think that any of the problems were Clooney’s fault. He really shouldn’t have to apologize. It was all Schumacher and the Suits fault.
Personally, I only blame the CASTING PEOPLE for having chosen George Clooney for the role of "Batman" in the godawful 1997 feature film. After all, I really believed that Mr. Clooney APOLOGIZED for playing the Caped Crusader many times in the course of several years in various TV talk show interviews. Furthermore, the only person that I truly blame was Akiva Goldsman, the sole screenwriter for "Batman & Robin" because he did such a very poor and even lousy job in making a plot that had turned into somewhat comical. Like the "Batman" TV series from the 1960's in that kind of level. NO OFFENSE to the fans of that memorable and campy TV series anyway. As for Mr. Clooney, I think he at least TRIED in doing some good in the role, but I still believed his public apology as well.
While Thurman and Schwarzenegger truly embraced the camp , and went along having fun during filming, Clooney seems to have been embarrassed and lost in it.

To be fair to George Clooney, it’s not his fault, Joel Schumacher knew he was completely been miscast as Batman. You could’ve gotten a better actor suited for the role after Kilmer’s one-hit wonder as Batman in Forever. But Clooney wasn’t it. And by the way, he was coming off from one of the best medical drama shows of all time, ER, which Clooney didn’t stick with the show for long and he went on to become a successful actor in Hollywood with films like The Peacemaker (with Sandra Bullock) and Ocean’s 11 and 12.
One of the things I like about Clooney, is that he realizes he didn't do a good job and fully accepts that. He doesn't try to brush it off, or shift the blame, he kinda just owns it and apologies. That said, I do feel there are a few good moments with him, the stuff with Freeze life you say, but I also like some of the stuff in the manor and dealing with Alfred. Just about any time he's not trying to be batman is usually more enjoyable for me. I always say the Forever is trying to be a modern take on the 60's series, and gets it right. BnR is it getting it wrong. Freeze is very much trying to meld 60's Mr. Freeze with BTAS Mr. Freeeze, and I think if it'd been anyone but Arnold, that it might have been one of the most enjoyable characters in the movie. It's not bad, but it's the wrong actor for the role. But I can also see this Bruce/Batman trying to be Adam West Batman rather then Michael Keaton Batman. And in that way, it kinda works. But that's also the problem, this is the 4th movie in a series where it's supposed to be the Same Batman. Keaton to Kilmer are different takes on the same character, but they tried hard to make things feel like they were still the same. Here they didn't even try to bother with the small details. Like you say with Forever, if this had been a stand alone movie, or even marketed as a homage to the 60's series then maybe it could work. But I feel like this is the epitome of studio interfence, with this feeling like they were just trying to please the suits and not tell a good story. Watching this video after finding out, just yesterday, that George’s Bruce is… … … …SPOILER ALERT 🚨… … … …the post-credits cameo, at the end of _'The Flash'_ (2023), I cannot help but wonder how you feel about said cameo!
It’s not that George was awful, he was awfully written and he had nipples on his suit. That’s all 🤣 written correctly I feel he’d be a great Bruce Wayne and a gritty Batman in todays climate.
Being said that, as you said, he was a good Batman in a bad movie, and it is VERY easy to be "the worst Batman" when no one cares about Batman, as you said. Also, timing was important. I mean, I'm not blaming Mr. Joel Schumacher (R.I.P.) BUT 1 Why payin' tribute to a TV show, 30 YEARS LATER?! Because obviously, both Schumacher's movies were a tribute to the 1966 TV show, and its "campy" atmosphere, but in a modern way 2. Why payin' tribute to a 1960s TV show, after Tim Burton (and Michael Keaton) already set a certain standard for Batman to be dark...and you come back to the 1960s?!
Great video on Batman and Robin film George Clooney as Batman Hell No 👎👎👎 George Clooney as Bruce Wayne 😎👍 I know it's hard to separate the 2 characters from each other
Both Mr. Clooney's well developed sense of humor and his ability to laugh at himself are quite well documented. He had a hand in helping Trey Parker and Matt Stone usher South Park into existence, after all. Anyways....word has it that to this very day,he always makes sure to keep some cash on him anywhere he goes. Because if he happens to run into someone who brings up not having cared for his portrayal of Batman or that they dislike Batman & Robin as a film in general,he can pull some cash out of his pocket right there on the spot and reimburse them for the price of a ticket to see a film in the late '90s. And you've just GOTTA respect the guy for rolling with the punches AND finding a humorous response to the situation!
Worst Batman is Pattinson, followed by Bale. Both looked like shit in the suit, and the suits they wore looked like garbage. Bale with his misshapen head, weak jawline, and pencil-neck cowl, and Pattinson with his lame hand-stitched costume (like Catwoman) with the weird shape of the mouth-hole, with the top edges stretched up to his ears (worthy of a smile-cut to fit the mask lol). At least Clooney's chin looked good in a suit worthy of a Batman film, which was faithful to the Batman look of the 80s, but improved by being black. The movie sucked, but the actor's only job is to look good in a dope looking batsuit. No one cares about Bruce Wayne or having an actor with dramatic chops. Just wear the suit and punch. That's Batman's primary job. Pattinson and Bale failed to do that.
I was thiking how this movie had VR Alfred and how that was kind of...odd. Then I realized, this Batman doesnt have demons anymore, he just goes out and enjoys being Batman. Aflred hid the fact he was sick, and hid the fact he was making a virtual replacement, and I think there is an argument to be made that he was worried how Bruce would handel the loss of the last connection to his parents. Why am I thinking so deeply about this movie? Because its 2am!
Any body could have played batman on that movie and they would have been deemed bad but I remember at the time every one thought the movie was good I remember all the kids at school doing the ice puns what killed the dinosaurs. The ice age ect
I actually liked Clooney as Batman. He seemed more mature and level headed. It was the god awful writing and direction they took with the film that made it seem bad.
That's something that we can all agree on, it's really sad when the sidekick outshines the hero, Chris O'Donnell is best Robin or Nightwing wait he's the only Robin in live action still leagues better
It doesn’t help he’s in the worse Batman movie too… I don’t hate his portrayal, but I’ll never look back fondly of his Batman either. There’s no redeeming qualities no matter how you wanna try to find them. And everybody only remembers Batman and Robin for terrible performances, the bat credit card, and primarily for Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy.
Earlier today I was in this store that sold a lot of retro things including VHS. The video tapes, were even pretty expensive there. Like 30 dollars and these were used. Batman and Robin happened to be there (Actually you probably posted this around the time I saw it) for only five bucks.
Clooney was working with what he was given. Val Kilmer actually tanked the franchise before that. Clooney later admitted that he played Batman as gay, so he at least got that part right.
😂 George Cloony Batman is who I like to call the SALESMAN BATMAN! O_O I honestly thought he was trying to sell his car to Robin in the beginning there for a second....
I wouldn’t say he is the worst but not in my top 3 actors to have played Batman and I’ll never apologize for the enjoyment I still get from Batman and Robin that doesn’t mean it’s a perfect movie cause even I have my issues with it like Barbra being Alfred’s niece the neon painted Gotham city and the fact it was made just to sell toys to children I do appreciate the movie for showing USA dying Alfred cause it shows Bruce’s compassionate side see his father figure dying slowly in front of him something thst hadn’t happened since the 60’s comics but my favorite version of Batman from the 60’s was made it possible for future projects to have him cause the show wanted him and thry had to get dc’s permission to use him so getting Batman’s compassionate side in the wasan interesting thing to do
"Now I know why Superman works alone" To this day I'm still perplexed that George Clooney Batman said that line not even 5 minutes into the movie. A small part of me thought or even hoped that his comment about Superman was going to lead to something cool but it didn't. One of the many disappointments this movie brought me.
The only spark of light in the turd pile that is Batman & Robin is Alfred. It was a mood whiplash to have the genuinely touching scenes of Bruce and him among the Bat-skates, Bat credit cards, rear zippers, Bat suit nipples and ice puns. Michael Gough did a great job as Aflred, even in the worst Batman movie ever.
When someone says George was a good Bruce Wayne I cringe. You mean he was convincing as a millionaire? He even smiled when he was talking about Alfred's cancer. I don't hate Clooney but I hate him in this
Yeah, George felt like he's the knock-off brand Batman when they couldn't get Adam West. All that was missing was the pop-up sound effect bubbles of "Biff! Wham! Pow!"
Considering hat he WANTED to copy cat the darkness from the previous films. He squeezed in AS MUCH AS HE COULD. 😂 But.... I feel like since they HAD NOT granted him the creative freedom he so desired in his previous installment, I feel like Batman and Robin was Schumacher's MIDDLE FINGER to the studio for not let'n him be HIM. 😂 I mean... COME ON!!! HE BROUGHT US LOST BOYS! 😑 I can respect the fact that he did this movie like that on PURPOSE!
George Clooney would make a great Batman NOW. If he got swole as fuck and actually tried to act, he'd make a good older Bruce Wayne/Batman on like an adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns. I always thought if I was old enough when Batman and Robin came out, and you'd have told me George Clooney would play Batman, I'd have said it was perfect casting.
His was my first batman and why I didn't care much for Batman I mean I didn't dislike the movies (everyone else did but the puns and mcds toys got me) but I saw Clooney as Batman and didn't care much for him and assumed he was an exact representation of the characters of Batman/Bruce Wayne, I was very young back then but now i'm more open to the other representations of the bat the flaws and psychology are welcome, event though I still kind of would want a comedic batman, in this day and age here's enough misery though that kind of batman no longer fits.
Nah, George Clooney acted in a Batman movie with the worst SCRIPT. That movie was meant to be campy, just like the 1966 Batman TV series. I'm not going to blame Clooney for portraying Batman the way it was written in the script. If someone has to be blamed, I'd blame the writer and director of "Batman and Robin."
But the TV series had actual dialog, not just people setting up jokes, like, "No beauty..." "...just the beast." You may not like the TV series because it's "old" but much more effort was put into it than Batman and Robin.
@@DocBruceBanner Yeah, but the movie "Batman and Robin" and the "Batman" TV series had different writers, so I wouldn't expect the level of writing to be the same in both. To me, that does not change the fact that both the movie and the TV series were meant to be campy.
Fair enough; but that doesn't change that the TV show is much more well written...which is sad considering they gave the guy who wrote "Batman and Robin" an Oscar!
I literally think he was casted by his chin…I remember reading somewhere that that’s how Schumacher or the producers or a writer or someone casted Clooney…I think they were at a bar or restaurant and drew a cowl over Clooney picture and was like…yep…
“Batman Forever” is the film I saw most at the cinema as a young lad. I think it was 9 times - and I’m not ashamed. I am now a lecturer in English and History, but an Oxford degree has never dampened my love of these horrible films. 1 Why payin' tribute to a TV show, 30 YEARS LATER?! Because obviously, both Schumacher's movies were a tribute to the 1966 TV show, and its "campy" atmosphere, but in a modern way
2. Why payin' tribute to a 1960s TV show, after Tim Burton (and Michael Keaton) already set a certain standard for Batman to be dark...and you come back to the 1960s?!
Great video on Batman and Robin film
George Clooney as Batman Hell No 👎👎👎
George Clooney as Bruce Wayne 😎👍
I know it's hard to separate the 2 characters from each other
I guess he's trash
He even admited it.
Those were the times actors actually admit they made a terrible movie. Today, they blame fans if they don't like it.
6:05 Clooney’s performance was affected by his long work schedule of doing this and E.R. at the same time.
I wouldn’t say He’s the Worst but he’s the Weakest of the Batman Actors.
Same,he played good Bruce Wayne.
That's just an euphorism for "worst".
That makes him the worst he didn't understand the character but he made a good bruce Wanye
Battison is the worse
@@markmagician2471 He's one of the best. Go read a comic book.
“Hi George Clooney, worst Batman”
" HI ,
PETER GRIFFIN ,
SECOND BEST HOMER "
Vee Infuso's next video "Water is Wet"
He wasn't great as Batman but he was actually really good as Bruce Wayne.
Head shacking cloney no way he sucks
THANK YOU
@@justinhunt4767you suck
He was not the worst.his movie was worst . He was actualy ij my opini9j the most batman closest to the cartoon batman show
After seeing the Flash I actually think George has a chance to redeem himself
I almost kinda would love for him to have another crack at Batman to get it right.
Why he's horrible
“High, George Clooney. Worst Batman.”
Clooney was working with what he was given. Val Kilmer actually tanked the franchise before that.
Clooney later admitted that he played Batman as gay, so he at least got that part right.
Lol what??
😂 George Cloony Batman is who I like to call the SALESMAN BATMAN! O_O I honestly thought he was trying to sell his car to Robin in the beginning there for a second....
George : Hey there, want to get a sweet car like mine? Well you'll need THIS!
*Flashes Batcard to Robin*
I wouldn’t say he is the worst but not in my top 3 actors to have played Batman and I’ll never apologize for the enjoyment I still get from Batman and Robin that doesn’t mean it’s a perfect movie cause even I have my issues with it like Barbra being Alfred’s niece the neon painted Gotham city and the fact it was made just to sell toys to children I do appreciate the movie for showing USA dying Alfred cause it shows Bruce’s compassionate side see his father figure dying slowly in front of him something thst hadn’t happened since the 60’s comics but my favorite version of Batman from the 60’s was made it possible for future projects to have him cause the show wanted him and thry had to get dc’s permission to use him so getting Batman’s compassionate side in the wasan interesting thing to do
Did you do these videos awhile back and repost them? I thought I watched these awhile ago.
George Clooney on set: “I’m just here so I don’t get fined”
When someone says George was a good Bruce Wayne I cringe. You mean he was convincing as a millionaire? He even smiled when he was talking about Alfred's cancer. I don't hate Clooney but I hate him in this
When he smiles he's clearly trying to put on a brave face. You must be autistic
Meh ...he was basically an updated west batman.
Adam put everything into playing Batman. George put nothing.
He couldn't even stop smirking when Alfred was dying.
Isn't this a repost of "THE WORST BATMAN OF ALL TIME"?
I was starting to think I came from the future. 💀
Oddly enough, Batman&Robin was my favorite of them first 4 movies as a kid.
Because it was the most kid friendly probably
Remember mad magazine poking fun
At him for ruining batman.
They wrote a story about it while
At the bottom people were throwing stuff at him.
george clooney needs to make a cameo on the flash movie
His was my first batman and why I didn't care much for Batman I mean I didn't dislike the movies (everyone else did but the puns and mcds toys got me) but I saw Clooney as Batman and didn't care much for him and assumed he was an exact representation of the characters of Batman/Bruce Wayne, I was very young back then but now i'm more open to the other representations of the bat the flaws and psychology are welcome, event though I still kind of would want a comedic batman, in this day and age here's enough misery though that kind of batman no longer fits.
I'm hoping that at the end of The Flash Ezra Miller gets stuck in the Clooneyverse.
Awesome video 😎👍
I just act like this movie doesn't exist 🤔
. 99 for those cups back then going $4.95 nowadays 😭😭😭🤣🤣😂
He’s back 🔥🔥🔥
I've never noticed the head bobble, but since you've mentioned it, I can't unsee it😂 Batlo Brown
All the time
That George Clooney head bop is definitely a thing he does a lot lol that’s a part of him foreal
Why was this video uploaded twice?
Nah, George Clooney acted in a Batman movie with the worst SCRIPT. That movie was meant to be campy, just like the 1966 Batman TV series. I'm not going to blame Clooney for portraying Batman the way it was written in the script. If someone has to be blamed, I'd blame the writer and director of "Batman and Robin."
But the TV series had actual dialog, not just people setting up jokes, like, "No beauty..." "...just the beast."
You may not like the TV series because it's "old" but much more effort was put into it than Batman and Robin.
Clooney could have been better, too. His voice is rather similar to Kevin Conroy.
Clooney's is basically Conroy without the depth and intimidation.
I literally think he was casted by his chin…I remember reading somewhere that that’s how Schumacher or the producers or a writer or someone casted Clooney…I think they were at a bar or restaurant and drew a cowl over Clooney picture and was like…yep…
Just looking at Clooney in the costume makes me giggle.
Amazing outro!
Omg his dopey ass batman credit card!!!
Mate I aint thought about that for years 😂😂😂
“Batman Forever” is the film I saw most at the cinema as a young lad. I think it was 9 times - and I’m not ashamed. I am now a lecturer in English and History, but an Oxford degree has never dampened my love of these horrible films. My favourite film EVER is Transformers the Movie, and if anyone says a bad word about that admittedly cynical trash, I’ll punch them.
I loved him O Brother Where art Thou and Leatherheads. It feels like he played the Bruce Wayne mask.
I think he was a great Bruce wayne, but not a great batman
Someone posted about how the Schumacher films were parody movies in the Burtonverse Gotham
