People who are commenting rude things are most likely jealous. Nobody can play absolutely perfectly, even professionals make mistakes, but for a 13-year old you must admit he is a good clarinetist. On the other hand, it really doesn't matter if you're this good by the age of 13 or 20, you can still get far as a musician.
Instead of commenting on his flaws, enjoy the music and practise yourself, anyone can do it if they just understand it takes time.

When I listened to this years ago as an aspiring clarinetist, I thought Han Kim was just a technical prodigy. Listening to this as an adult, I realize this guy had much more than just techniques. He really tried to express his musicality here, and it can be heard through his naive and not fully matured emotions. Such is the beauty of music - I can come back to it years later and see something I hadn't seen before and appreciate it in a new light. Thank you Han Kim.

To those of you commenting on the swaying / movement of Han Kim: you obviously are not musicians. Musicians are able to FEEL the music, not simply play what is written. Han Kim is turning the rhythms and dynamics on the page into true music. His physical movement is part of his expression of his ability to hear the true music and make it possible for the audience to hear the musicality that he hears. Next time you play a piece, try moving along with the music like he does, and you'll understand.

Isn't this one of the sweetest pieces for clarinet and piano? A wonderful performance for both; complimenting each other in technique, style and talent. I've tried playing this with my daughter, she on piano, me hacking away on clarinet. I've never been able to "sit still" with a piece of music, we were meant to move in life and to music, a natural gift. His movements are not distracting, to stand there stiff would be to disregard the musicality of the piece; so bravo to both. I loved it.

thank you for posting this fine performance of a masterpiece- Saint-Saens magnificent sonata. To think that he was 86 when he wrote this! And how wonderful to have a fine, young musician bring the written notes to life! beautiful.

To those of you who are commenting on the playing quality: His tone is actually quite excellent. If you have enough experience on the clarinet, you know that this is an excellent performance. Yes, there are professionals who are better, but please do not make irrational comments if you don't know what you are talking about. Listen to players like Emma Johnson or Larry Combs and you will start to realize the true difference between a good and a bad tone. This player's tone is by NO means poor.

Can you play this without practice or do you think you can just play if you go to a professional school? He is one of my favorite players, so stop judging! It's very rude!

He plays well, especially since he is so young. (14 here, right?) The swaying and such are obviously going with the music, but you may not realize that if you're not a clarinetist. Some musicians move around A LOT (principal violin of TFO, for example), others choose not to (I had a professor who NEVER moved. lol.). It's all preference, what helps you feel music, and what you've been taught. Music educators often encourage movement. His tone is good, needs to keep the tongue high on some notes.

I can play the song at least, but the hardest parts for me are the sixteenth notes, how do I get past those. I am really musical oriented, I can play all the notes in the clarinet. Any pointers and advice for these fast notes. (I can do things that are going straight down but it isn't like this

Yeah, there are some intonation issues, but wow, what a performance. I'd definitely give more credit for accomplishing the things that many can't, as he's done here with his great musicality and expressiveness, and know that the other issues as discussed will be tightened up as he moves along. Great job!

@coloredpencils01 For a musician who hears music in the blood is almost impossible not to move. There are differences not always move so much. Not because they feel less vibration but because music is in the habit of each performer.

Outstanding performance for sure, I've performed this piece and even as a college student I can't pull it off with the seeming effortlessness that he pulls off.
However, while most musicians will move with the music, the movements here are a bit extreme, and the horn angle is almost certainly the reason why his tuning is all over the place. Also, finger position is still very immature, and relies purely on personal dexterity, making things much harder than they need to be.

@coloredpencils01 thats not entirely true. moving around a lot can cause lots of tension in the body causing stress in muscles and causing injuries. i know this because i move like han kim and i got mild rsi which is now gone.

Do it slowly with a metronome. Repeat until satisfactory. Then repeat a few more times. Then crank up the metronome a little. Play the passage. Repeat until satisfactory. Then repeat a few more times. Than crank up the metronome a little. Catching onto a pattern? Eventually you'll be able to play those pesky sixteenth notes flawlessly. If not you did something wrong and start over at step 1.
