    Bit late to the party and don't even think they're available now (the contact speed model seems the closest) but used to run conti sport contacts on my bike. 700cx38 completely slick aside from a groove for water clearance. Absolutely great on the road.

    Not sure where you got the idea that most motors last 20,000 miles. I have just replaced the Bosch performance line CX after only 4000 km. I only ever clean the bike by hand after every ride, have replaced the chain 4 times, fitted new cassette and freewheel and the bike is 2 1/2 years old. The bearings were shot and the main shaft was pitted. I worked for 40 years in Oil and Gas service business responsible for maintaining equipment in the harshest of environments so I know a bit about looking after gear. I think there is a lot of miss information on the robustness of ebike motors. Steve Jones even had one replaced during the Tour du Mont Blanc.

      Iv done about 12 thousand miles on a Focus hard tail emtb, it has a impulse 2 motor which has been replaced twice with a brand new motor and 3 times with self reconditioned motors. Each time I have reconditioned one it has been the bearings at fault and once changed they have lasted as long as the new ones. But my average motor life has been 3000 miles the lowest was about 500 miles (which was a new motor).

    Be careful with psi whilst most tyres are quoted as staying they will take up to 60psi this is with a tube not tubeless and the rim manufacturers max psi is often a lot lower wtb etc print this on there website last thing you want is to hit a hole at 60psi & blow the joint out from the rim

    • @embn
      @embn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes we would always suggest you check the max rim pressures. Mountain bike rims are often not designed with high road pressures in mind. You can however run a 700c touring tyre as Chris suggested. Blowing tyres off rims sucks! And can be dangerous in a riding situation!

I had run minions but had so many flats when hitting the knarly stuff that I thought I'd give the eddy's a try... 3 days of riding in the lake district on the eddy's and not 1 flat tyre... 1st time this has happened in 25 years of riding there!! ..

    Do you foresee any issues? Cassette/chain messing? Rotor / brake bedding, overall tyre diameter variation/ motor speed limiter?

    Your summary on why a motor is noisy is spot on. I have a 2016 Scott E-Spark 710 with the Bosch CX motor. Which BTW totally silent. I had it replaced in November 2018 with a brand new motor under warrantee because of the usual problem with the old motors. Worn crank bearings. Guess what? The new motor is also silent. My mate has a 2016 KTM Macina. Bosch CX motor. His was as noisy as f**k. He has had 2 replacement motors all very noisy.

    • @embn
      @embn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      E-Bike specific chains normally have larger diameter pins to help with strength and wear. Chain "stretch" is accumulated wear as the plates rub and wear down the pins. As Chris mentions the most important thing is to be sure to keep the chain clean and lubed correctly to reduce this friction.

Going to put back on a KMC again next just to see if it was a coincidence, but so far shimano-kmc 1-0. Bike is a 19´ Merida 900e, riding trails 80% of the time.

      KMC eBike Chains are scam ;-)
      Just use any chain - like the SRAm 1130 for around EUR12,- - and will will last as long or longer.
      Shimano so far good experience with tome to 0.5, same with SRAM. KMC eBike chain doesn´t last any kilometer longer as all the cheaper rivals

    • @stanley3647
      @stanley3647 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks EMTB for answer :)
      And here is background to my story:
      Always i was big fan of shimano drivetrain (for my obsolete bikes: 7-8-9 speed).
      In 2012 i bougt Trek with 10spd Sram drivetrain and my local dealer recommend 1030 or 1050 Sram chains, and never got a single problem with that.
      But one time i try buy something posh: shiny 1091 lightweigth with hollow pins... Runs like a dream, instant gear change and because lighweight - less wobbly.
      3rd ride on it (80km done on chain) I made agresive gear change down at front chainrings - it bend like a rubber ;)
      Now trying KMC X10 (10 spd) "silver-black" - seems to be fine, just one thing i don't like: Quick Link is same colour as chain - difficult to find (especially after ride in rain and mud)
      Usually my chains worn out after 1000-1200km with my ridding style (time when reach 0.5 limit) I never wait up to 0.75 - casettes/chainrings are more expensive to replace.
      Price is similar for Sram/KMC/Shimano "basic" chains - I try not buy Shimano - because every time with new chain i need to buy Quick Link, make it more expensive.
      With my fist EMTB bought I stay with KMC "heavy duty" ebike chain. But no experience with this type of machine so far.
