I'm not trans but my younger brother is, he started testosterone when he was only 13, a lot of the doctors didn't recommend it and highly suggested to wait till he was 16+ and while that would of been a good idea he was at the point were he was sucidal because of how much he wanted to look and sound like a boy, so at 13 he started it, and it honestly went great, he's now almost 15 and is happier than ever.
I'm having trouble convincing my mother to take me to a therapist. She is absolutely convinced that therapists ruin people even more. Little does she know not going to a therapist is making me worse.
Where I live (Bc, Canada) once you're 16 you don't need parental consent. So @ any Canadian kiddos, check the laws where you live! You may be able to get hrt sooner! :)

I'm 13 and while it is young, I told my mom not long ago that I was transgender. She told me that id have to wait to do anything to my body till I was eighteen because she couldn't support it. She thinks replacing hormones and changing your body hasn't been researched enough and isn't safe.
at your age, hormone blockers may be the best option for now - the earliest you'd want to start T is 15/16. but blockers can help a lot, too. give your mum research articles and books, try to teach her that everything that happens on blockers is reversable. try asking her if you could go to a therapist and research some in your area that deal with gender; a good therapist will help you convince your parents that being trans is a real thing that anyone can deal with. i hope everything goes well

i came out at 15 now i’m almost 18 and my mom still won’t consent to me starting testosterone :( i’m so sad my mom’s religion-based bigotry ruined my body and preventing me from getting taller and changing my bone structure while i was still growing. it’s so fucking unfair that we can legally consent to sex at 16 but don’t have autonomy over our transitions. most parents are transphobic already which subjects so many trans kids to abuse. the amount of reddit posts i read about trans kids getting advice on how to survive until 18 because they’re so depressed is saddening. we shouldn’t have to struggle like this.
I completely agree, I’m 15, but my parents are the exact same. They let puberty ruin my body although I had already stated that I didn’t want this, now I can’t grow any taller (I’m 5’2”) and I can’t reverse many of the effects going through this had on me, including a lot of psychological effects like PTSD from them. I’m really sorry they won’t let you even though you’re almost 18 though, but by the time you are they can’t really stop you from giving informed consent. Good luck though!
I'm a trans male that has a semi-supportive family, my father's side doesn't accept me as much but my mother is very very supportive. I've identified as a boy for a whole year and my father's side of the family still doesn't believe I'm actually trans or something. My mom says that she will take me to gender therapy and let me start T if it's what I want so I'll be living with her.

For me, there came a time where I was at peace enough with my identity that I was comfortable sharing it with others, knowing that whether they agreed or not wouldn’t affect how I felt about myself. It was a combination of this, feeling fed up with being misgendered all the time, and wanting to be able to be myself at the next step I was about to take in life. I felt ready. While coming out at your age has it’s benefits, there’s no pressure. Just think of it as time to research, subtly find out what your parents think about it, maybe find a name your comfortable with - all things that will make your coming out smoother. You want it to be as smooth as possible, and provide as much reliable information to your mother as you can, because it can make swaying her to your side easier in the long run. It might not happen instantly, but you just have to keep chipping away at it. Everything will be ok.
You're ELEVEN, it's absolutely a phase. I can't tell you how many phases I went thru when I was your age that I was convinced was a permanent decision. So glad I didn't make any crazy decisions then and held off until I was more mentally developed. There's a reason you need parental control until you're 18...

I went to a clinic specifically for transgender kids in Providence, you need to get your parent's permission though for the most part. My doctor convinced my mom to allow it
i could be starting t soon as a trans man at 17 and i just dont like how doctors etc say to parents "this or have a dead child" is fucked to me when theyre under 18. i think if a doctor said that to my parents id feel a huge amount of guilt and have to hold back anger for that because its not alyways the case

I'm 13 turning 14 very soon and I'm a trans male (FTM) But I have the worst fear of needles, so I found out that there was the gel ver, (I'm Not on testostorone) but do you still have to take blood test or anything relatingto needles? It's okay if you can't answer this question.
to safely be on testosterone you do have to take blood tests about every 6 months to monitor your hormone levels and other blood counts that can be impacted by testosterone. there are plenty of really great nurses and phlebotomists though that can make it a lot easier!

Hey! It depends on your state I believe. I'm 15 and I was allowed to sign off my own consent forms for Testosterone without parents. You can search up your states laws regarding HRT for minors. Hope this helped a bit! (Although usually you only need one parents signature from what I've seen)

It depends on the place you go to. I’m going to the most well-known gender clinic near me, and I was on the waitlist for 7 months before we were able to schedule appointments (which are going to be several months after I got off the waitlist and are a few weeks-a few months apart from each other). Depending on the place, they might require a lot of appointments before starting as well. I have three scheduled; two are virtual intakes and one is in person, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to start after the in person meeting or if they’ll have me schedule more.

he's a teenager, not necessarily a child. as long as someone is at an age where someone who naturally has those hormones would start to produce them (and obviously gone through the processes to make absolutely sure that this is really what they want!) then all its doing is making them go through puberty of their desired gender, same hormones and all. If you'd like i can find some study's but so far every major health organization agrees that HRT is a great option for those of age who desire it.
Hey, I’m looking to start T within the next few years, but my therapist said that i cannot due to my mental illness (depression + anxiety) and will have to wait till i ‘get better’? Is this the case? I paid for the one appointment it took me (about $120) and every 5-dose refill is $27 but my insurance covers refills! I lucked out, usual refills are $40-60/month and usually you will need many more appointments. Best of luck
It's probably best to wait till your older, like 15-16, I know it's hard and it sucks but that's really young to start. That's why they won't see you. Hormone blockers are probably best for you. Hang in there I know it's hard but you're strong.
It is absolutely not reversible. Puberty doesn't just go on hold! Its important to love yourself and you deserve to be free to live as a child. A childs brain isnt even fully developed yet.
Exactly! I personally am a demiboy. I've decided I will not start t until I get top surgery and or until I'm 25. Some effects of t are just displeasing to me like facial hair. I will most likely end up doing voice therapy instead since it is a lot safer than t for younger teens.

The good thing about blockers is they could be 100% reversed. It just holds off puberty. This info should help convince if you haven't already

For me, there came a time where I was at peace enough with my identity that I was comfortable sharing it with others, knowing that whether they agreed or not wouldn’t affect how I felt about myself. It was a combination of this, feeling fed up with being misgendered all the time, and wanting to be able to be myself at the next step I was about to take in life. I felt ready. While coming out at your age has it’s benefits, there’s no pressure. Just think of it as time to research, subtly find out what your parents think about it, maybe find a name your comfortable with - all things that will make your coming out smoother. You want it to be as smooth as possible, and provide as much reliable information to your mother as you can, because it can make swaying her to your side easier in the long run. It might not happen instantly, but you just have to keep chipping away at it. Everything will be ok.

You're ELEVEN, it's absolutely a phase. I can't tell you how many phases I went thru when I was your age that I was convinced was a permanent decision. So glad I didn't make any crazy decisions then and held off until I was more mentally developed. There's a reason you need parental control until you're 18...

I went to a clinic specifically for transgender kids in Providence, you need to get your parent's permission though for the most part. My doctor convinced my mom to allow it
i could be starting t soon as a trans man at 17 and i just dont like how doctors etc say to parents "this or have a dead child" is fucked to me when theyre under 18. i think if a doctor said that to my parents id feel a huge amount of guilt and have to hold back anger for that because its not alyways the case
to be fair, a large majority trans kids are su1c*dal because of a lack of acceptance from their family. i’m also 17 and i attempted 3 times last year. i wish a doctor would’ve told my mom that she’s wagering having a dead kid bc it was and still is my reality. it may not be the case for u but the fact that i’m being forced to suffer like this because of my mom’s transphobia is so unfair to me. i’ll never get my teenhood back and my growth plates probably fused so T won’t work as effectively as it would’ve if she let me start when i came out at 15.

That's a bit young, I know it's hard but you have to wait just a little while more, at least till your 15/16 or older. I know it's hard and it sucks but you may be able to start hormone blockers

yo this is old and im not on t but i think youre supposed to talk to your regular doctor about being trans/wanting hrt and they can lead you to a therapist and stuff from there, and once ur 18 u dont need parental consent so u should be good in that aspect

I'm 13 turning 14 very soon and I'm a trans male (FTM) But I have the worst fear of needles, so I found out that there was the gel ver, (I'm Not on testostorone) but do you still have to take blood test or anything relatingto needles? It's okay if you can't answer this question.
to safely be on testosterone you do have to take blood tests about every 6 months to monitor your hormone levels and other blood counts that can be impacted by testosterone. there are plenty of really great nurses and phlebotomists though that can make it a lot easier!

Hmmm... unless you have some kind of conditions according to my best judgment you’re good. Check with your hormone doctors though.

Hey! It depends on your state I believe. I'm 15 and I was allowed to sign off my own consent forms for Testosterone without parents. You can search up your states laws regarding HRT for minors. Hope this helped a bit! (Although usually you only need one parents signature from what I've seen)

I told my parents a few months,nearly last year that i was transgender,i had small convos with my mom abt it a few times afterwards and she said itd be best to wait a few years first to think abt if i really do want this (Starting T and top surgery),unfortunately for me,if i did wait a few more years id alredy be in collage and ppl would know i was trans (im fine with ppl knowing but only really if i tell them,i dont want it to be obvious😅) im fine with my body right now as my chest is on the smaller side and could easily be hidden with a binder+my clothing style as is but its the appearance and voice that im worried about so starting T round about niw would be amazing,ive not done research recently so ive forgotten a bit,but i live in the UK (free healthcare stuffs) and i really dont know if it costs alot to start T or if it costs anything at all,but i feel starting T round about now would do amazing things for my confidence and self-worth,even making stronger relationships with others since i wouldnt be consistantly focused on my apperance and voice,unfortunately for me i dont have a therapist and dont really have a viable reason to get one,so thatd make it a little more difficult to start off,and then the GP and hospital appointments and i feel itd put more stress on my parents shoulders than they alredy deal with (random but i need to know,could i start T with low iron,i tend to lack iron and needed loads of blood tests when i was younger and i think i might be starteing to get iron defficiency again but havent had a blood test yet,would they still let me start T with iron defficiency or?) yes being trans is all mental until you make it physical. trans people still have normal hormones of their assigned gender until they take hrt

It depends on the place you go to. I’m going to the most well-known gender clinic near me, and I was on the waitlist for 7 months before we were able to schedule appointments (which are going to be several months after I got off the waitlist and are a few weeks-a few months apart from each other). Depending on the place, they might require a lot of appointments before starting as well. I have three scheduled; two are virtual intakes and one is in person, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to start after the in person meeting or if they’ll have me schedule more.
Can you please cite your sources that hormone therapy is safe for children? I have a really hard time believing it is but I want to understand this more thank you.
he's a teenager, not necessarily a child. as long as someone is at an age where someone who naturally has those hormones would start to produce them (and obviously gone through the processes to make absolutely sure that this is really what they want!) then all its doing is making them go through puberty of their desired gender, same hormones and all. If you'd like i can find some study's but so far every major health organization agrees that HRT is a great option for those of age who desire it.
My town is too small for gender therapy so if my parents would let me even start I'd have to drive 3 hours to even start gender therapy.
Just wait until you are old enough to NOT ask your parents permission and you'll see where the problem really was...

depends on insurance, but most likely you'll have to end up paying for at least one of the services (doctor's visits, therapy, or the hormones)
I paid for the one appointment it took me (about $120) and every 5-dose refill is $27 but my insurance covers refills! I lucked out, usual refills are $40-60/month and usually you will need many more appointments. Best of luck

It's probably best to wait till your older, like 15-16, I know it's hard and it sucks but that's really young to start. That's why they won't see you. Hormone blockers are probably best for you. Hang in there I know it's hard but you're strong.

It is absolutely not reversible. Puberty doesn't just go on hold! Its important to love yourself and you deserve to be free to live as a child. A childs brain isnt even fully developed yet.

Exactly! I personally am a demiboy. I've decided I will not start t until I get top surgery and or until I'm 25. Some effects of t are just displeasing to me like facial hair. I will most likely end up doing voice therapy instead since it is a lot safer than t for younger teens.
