  • This is a long one! Combat Records, Sweet Pain, Kelly Nickels, thrash metal and indie labels! Here I discuss what it was like working for an indie label in the 1980’s plus the Sweet Pain story!

Have always loved the Sweet Pain record. That band was underrated and before it's time for sure. True NYC Glam/Sleaze Rock!

I love hearing about record and distro company stories from the people who actually worked there. Would love to hear even more from you if you can think of more stories about your day to day life at Combat and Important.

Sweet Pain...one of my favorite albums of all time. I converted the tape to MP3 decades ago and it currently resides on my phone for road trips. Glad to hear you own the masters. We just need an official Sweet Pain release on CD....with bonus tracks....and a live DVD.....

@@beforeiforget1985 I'm now reading your book and loving the vibe. It's like I'm sitting with you in your living room, drinking a few beers, sharing the experience of the 80's. What I wouldn't give to go back in time and experience the early days of Twisted in the clubs and Motley in the Shout days. Epic times, dangerous times. I was a few years behind you but we survived...and continue to thrive.

Neat story...reminded me of the glam band Pretty Boy Floyd...who recorded their debut album before (I think) they had played any gigs...cool t-shirt...Cheers, Greg 😃

Great stories, no doubt memories for life! Ace Frehley had an agreement with KISS where he couldn't do anything for awhile after he left because of KISS' Polygram/Mercury deal, where they pulled a fast one on the label, negotiating & signing as Ace was leaving. ANTHRAX was 100% Megaforce til they got the Island deal, when the did a split distribution deal. Megaforce later set-up the Atlantic deal for TESTAMENT, OVERKILL etc. POISON were part of the 2nd glam wave & weren't signed til late '85, 1st album dropped '86, around same time as CINDERELLA, TESLA etc. Perhaps you meant DOKKEN for '84 👍

I was curious about Combat Records because their logo was on the early Megadeth albums, but none of the other bands on Combat ever did much.

I have an autographed Sweet pain record from way back win that I won off of a New York radio station that used to play metal on Saturday nights after midnight. Always thought that album was really killer.

So curious, what's your thought on the kind of "bubblegum glam punk" that flared up around the early-mid 90s? Bands like Heart Throb Mob, Glamvestite Vampirez, Guttercats, etc?
