Yeah, I'm a bit confused. Is this his list of favorite 20 One hit Wonders from that decade, or like, top performing numbers wise? With his videos lately talking trash about modern music, there are some pretty questionable songs on there for a "favorite" or "best" list.
This is great, but would like more commentary from Rick on each song. A bunch of these were basically just him playing the song without really saying anything of substance, which is what we go to Rick for!
I mean, he could for example say that 90 % of this list is shallow crap, which it definitely is, but he would a bunch of ignorants saying "You're just an old man yelling at clouds!"
I must admit that it got a bit overplayed but it's "objectively" the best song on the list. Very minmalist but very catchy - I never noticed but Gotye has a total Sting voice, hasn't he?
After doing the 1960s I would enjoy seeing you do the 1950s 40s and 30s and 20s to finish off the century. There is some diversity there in music that is both influential and unfortunately forgotten sometimes. Thank you Rick!
Such a huge agree! It's one of those albums you can get lost in the lyricism like Pink Floyd, truly an amazing musical project. His current band is really great, but that record Making Mirrors truly is a trip and an accomplishment as a production!!

"Somebody that I used to know" probably should've been #1. It felt like the perfect case of a good song getting so popular and so much airplay that most people seemed to like it at one point (before growing to hate it from over being overplayed). Things like Gangam Style and What the Fox Say were more memes than songs people actually wanted to listen to.
To be fair, that's kind of Psy's schtick with all of his music. Gangnam Style, Gentleman, Daddy, That That, etc. His entire production is about a catchy chorus, simple trendy dance, and over-the-top presentation/performance.

He doesn't take himself seriously and I think that is what actually made him popular for a time since people even back then got tired of mainstream media and there is this dude mocking it so most of us cheered for him or simply were ok with it. But even he got boring just like everything else that had over exposure.
It might not be as good as the 70s and 80s, but as a 24 year old born in 2000, these songs played a large part in my childhood and growing up. So many of these songs, though not the best musically, hold a special place in my heart because of the memories tied to them. Riptide was the reason I started playing guitar. Let Her Go was the song that got me thru my 15 year old heart break... And We Were Young was the song we screamed coming home on the bus from out state championship.
Sorry Rick Fun were not One Hit Wonders they had a Billboard #1 with "We Are Young" (feat Janelle Monáe) in 2011, "Some Nights" got to #3 in 2012, and "Carry On" got to #20 the same year. Similarly Carly Rae Jepsen had #1 with "Call Me Maybe" in 2011, then in 2012 with Owl City "Good Time" was another #1. Also in 2012 she had a #23 hit with "Thiss Kiss". These two artists and Psy are the only ones on the list I'd ever heard of !!! Psy did have some other minor Billboard hits with other artists in the 2010's too.
I agree Carly Rae Jepsen wasn't a one hit wonder, "I Really Like You" was also platinum certified by the BPI, RIAA and others. If that doesn't constitute a song being a hit, maybe they need to re-think the certification requirements!
I have always wanted to know if one hit wonder refers to literally just one hit, or if it can include several hits from just one album. If it goes by album, then Fun was a one hit wonder.
@alangil40 I think the term generally refers to one song, or one single by a certain artist or band. Never heard of it used to describe a band or singer whose album has 2 or 3 hits on it. That's not a one hit wonder.
@@alangil40 One Hit Wonder in my book has ALWAYS referred to a singular single hit and no more. Ironically A-ha were counted by Rick as a one hit wonder as they only had one hit in USA however they have had many, many hits in both UK (where I am) & in Europe.
Likewise. During the past 10 years, I've dropped right out of the loop when it comes to new music. I have my own playlists full of old music, and the only radio stations I listen to, don't play new stuff either. That Despacito was a huge worldwide hit for months before I even knew it existed.
There has definitely been a dearth of good music for a while now, and there were only a couple in the video which I found appealing. But there have been some newer songs that I like which came out after 2012. Well, this helped me to narrow down when I entered my "grumpy old guy" phase of life and stopped listening to pop music. I'm pretty sure I recognized pretty much every other one hit wonder from all of the previous decades. This list baffled me. There were a maybe two or three songs that sounded vaguely familiar and a couple that I'd never heard but were aware of their place in the zeitgeist and 3 songs that I recognized as songs I had intentionally listened to. ("We Are Young" "Somebody That I Used to Know" and "Call me Maybe")
@@Vivi_9 I was living as an expat in Asia most of that decade. I heard the fox one and of course Gangnam style. None of the others. To get music I went on Pitchfork, or Allmusic, and looked for things that matched my interest. I still do that.
"Gen Z prog rocker". That makes me smile. I love that prog is making a comeback too, especially in the form of prog metal. I love all flavours of prog, but I am Gen X, so I grew up with a lot of it.
Grateful to have come of age during this era because the quality of the music on the radio from this era just inspired me to discover stuff from the past even more!
Rick nostalgia jamming, makes my day brighter and gives me hope for the future. No matter how mediocre it's been, we can look back together and remember all the time we spent with these songs in our lives, good and bad.

kind of funny how i associate that song more with Charli XCX than Icona pop. I'd have a hard time calling it a one hit wonder considering what an amazing career Charli XCX went on to have.

I’ve been following Ella since her early Reddit days streaming with friends playing classic American jazz tunes in her living room. Her breathy voice is such an amazing instrument on its own. If you like this, immediately search TH-cam for her “sessions with strings” versions of songs from an earlier EP. They will floor you in amazement. The poetry in her lyrics is mesmerizing. Thank you Rick for further exposing Ella Hohnen-Ford to the world.
I wouldn’t call Lord Huron a one hit wonder… but maybe because I listen to particular Sirius XM channels rather than general pop channels, some of the listed artists had multiple songs I would easily recognize. Also Vance Joy, Walk the Moon, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Fun all had more than one popular song. And I agree with others that Somebody I Used to Know should be #1.
When I think of One Hit Wonders, I think of bands that had one big hit, and no one hears from them again. Many of these artists had multiple songs getting consistent radio airplay. Lord Huron. Portugal the Man. FUN. Vance Joy.
I never heard of most of these songs except Fun - We Are Young, Carly Rae Jepson, Despacito, Somebody I Used to Know & Gangum Style. "Somebody I Used to Know" really stood out at the time and is the only song on this list that is of exceptional quality.
I heard all of these. So weird hearing it again for the first time in 10+ years. Many of these were just obnoxiously overplayed so I remembered every minor detail of it.
Ele King also had "Drunk (And I Don't Wanna Go Home)" (ft. Miranda Lambert) that peaked at #37, on the Billboard Hot 100. Fun. also had "Some Nights" and "Carry On" which peaked at #3 and #20, also charging on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.
I’ve watched all of Rick’s one hit wonder countdown videos and it’s interesting how this is pretty much the first video where we associate the songs with social media trends and “meme culture” in general as opposed to thinking of them as music for the sake of the music. Really makes sense as the 2010s was the decade when the phenomenon of “social media as a collective worldwide experience” really took off with the proliferation and democratization of TikTok and Instagram and it’s no wonder that the soundscape of what we consider “pop” changed forever!
Fetty Wap and Carly Rae Jepsen had multiple chart hits. the Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather”, “Safe and Sound” by Capital Cities, “Rude” by Magic! escaped selection
I would disagree with Carly Rae Jepsen being on the list because she had a couple other hits. "Run Away With Me" is one of the best pop songs of the 2010s IMO. She also did "Good Time" with Owl City.
Since there’s really no technical definition of a one-hit wonder, I think it’s probably fair enough, though I will say, her album Emotion is excellent and most of its tracks eclipse “Call Me Maybe” in quality and replay value
One hit wonders are hard to classify. There's no set definition but if we use a definition given by the literal meaning of one hit wonder (in that they need to only have one hit), Fun. Fetty Wap, and depending on what you consider hits, Portugal. the Man, Walk the Moon, and more shouldn't count but I don't think that's fair to call them not a one hit wonder to the casual listener
Lots of Top 10's to be had yet: Classical, Gregorian Chant, Baroque, Comedic, Grunge, Goth, Girl Power, Halloween, Christmas, Forth of July, Air Shows, Ball Games, Audience Participation, about Cars, etc. Rick's got it all locked up!
You'd have to break a lot of these down like Classical, Baroque, Comedic into sub categories because they're too huge and general. But yeah, it would be fun to get them done.

technically "we are young" has 1.1 bill listens on spotify with "some nights" only at 690k. regardless "carry on" slaps as well. they were a 3 hit wonder band imo
They are one of our hometown bands, and they’ve put out some good stuff. I can’t think of a single song they’ve done that has approached anywhere near the Heights of “Feel It Still.” They did have some modest alternative radio hits, but I’d be surprised if anything else entered the top 40
Not that they disappeared or didn't have a fan base before that song became huge, but by my criteria, if they don't have another Top 40 song, they're a one hit wonder.

Of 20 songs, I loved two, liked one, and was very glad that the other 17 never permeated my consciousness. I am so glad I am old and grew up with great music.
There were at least a couple more hits off that Fun. album. Some Nights was a hit (#3 on Billboard Top 100) and Carry On (which made the Top 20) Great songs, all of them.

The Man and Lord Huron be listed as "One hit wonders" when they've both had multiple songs AND albums that were *excellent* especially PTM's 2011 In The Mountain In The Cloud album. I’m 70 I recognized “ this is my fight song”, “Riptide, “The Fox”, “We Are Young” , “Gangnam Style “. I worked at a Home Depot part time so I would hear these on their music channel!

They're like the music I was listening to from the mid-90s and 00s, then nu metal and Cher came along to make music bad again. Luckily there's still some really good music being recorded you just have to know where to find it.
This is the first time I hadn't heard every song on the list, and I only recognized 7. And several of those I wish I didn't recognize, lol. This really brings to light why I have very few memories of music from this decade. Thankfully I'm finding much better options these days, through services like TH-cam where I can search what appeals to me!

How is Despacito considered a one hit wonder? Both Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee have had other major hits. Even if you don't listen to Latin American music, Daddy Yankee's Gasolina was an unavoidable monster hit.
Luis Fonsi may technically have had other songs make the top 40 of the Hot 100 but I highly doubt the average music listener in the USA who is familiar with “Despacito” can name any other Luis Fonsi songs. I know I can’t. Not to the degree of familiarity that Daddy Yankee would have with “Rompe” or “Con Calma”, or “Gasolina” as you mentioned. I think it’s a fair inclusion, especially compared to some others on this list.

But song is Luis Fonsi ft Daddy Yankee. So the main artist, Fonsi, is the one hit wonder one. He could have used the mix where Beiber is also featured and it would have stand a one hit wonder.
Man....this takes me back to a very specific time and place. I moved in 2009 and all these songs were the soundtrack. Those were some fun years. Also....music sounds totally different now. Its pretty astonishing.
Fun wasn't a one-hit wonder. They had 'Some Nights', which peaked at number 3 and 'Carry on' was a top 20 hit. Psy isn't really a one-hit wonder either, but Gangnam Style was for sure a global phenomenon. My number one would be "Royals', but Lorde also technically had another top ten hit with 'Team'. I might have included 'Pumped up kicks', 'Bulletproof', and 'I love It', but this is a solid list.
Lorde has a top 10 (Team) and top 20 (Green Light) so "Royals" doesn't belong here either. "Pumped Up Kicks" would have been a reasonable choice as I don't think they had another top 40.

Agreed. Most of these songs were pretty lousy and forgettable, with the exceptions of "Riptide" and "Somebody That I Used to Know", which were ok pop songs in my opinion. The 2000's and especially the 2010's were the beginning of the end of good music.

Few remember those songs anymore. When we think of Fun., we think "We Are Young." When we think of Carly Rae Jepsen (something most don't ever do), they think "Call Me Maybe." No one thinks of the Owl City track.
Cool thing about 'Shut up & Dance'... It lends itself to the Lindy Hop... for those who know it, and can adapt the steps just a bit! Saw an older couple at a wedding do that to this song, like they were dancing to Glen Miller.

Carly Rae Jensen is not a one hit wonder
"Somebody that I used to know" probably should've been #1. It felt like the perfect case of a good song getting so popular and so much airplay that most people seemed to like it at one point (before growing to hate it from over being overplayed). Things like Gangam Style and What the Fox Say were more memes than songs people actually wanted to listen to.
kind of a true one hit wonder in that the popularity of the song made the artist retreat from the public eye on purpose.

To be fair, that's kind of Psy's schtick with all of his music. Gangnam Style, Gentleman, Daddy, That That, etc. His entire production is about a catchy chorus, simple trendy dance, and over-the-top presentation/performance.

He doesn't take himself seriously and I think that is what actually made him popular for a time since people even back then got tired of mainstream media and there is this dude mocking it so most of us cheered for him or simply were ok with it.

It might not be as good as the 70s and 80s, but as a 24 year old born in 2000, these songs played a large part in my childhood and growing up. So many of these songs, though not the best musically, hold a special place in my heart because of the memories tied to them. Riptide was the reason I started playing guitar. Let Her Go was the song that got me thru my 15 year old heart break... And We Were Young was the song we screamed coming home on the bus from out state championship.

Sorry Rick Fun were not One Hit Wonders they had a Billboard #1 with "We Are Young" (feat Janelle Monáe) in 2011, "Some Nights" got to #3 in 2012, and "Carry On" got to #20 the same year. Similarly Carly Rae Jepsen had #1 with "Call Me Maybe" in 2011, then in 2012 with Owl City "Good Time" was another #1. Also in 2012 she had a #23 hit with "Thiss Kiss". These two artists and Psy are the only ones on the list I'd ever heard of !!! Psy did have some other minor Billboard hits with other artists in the 2010's too.
I agree Carly Rae Jepsen wasn't a one hit wonder, "I Really Like You" was also platinum certified by the BPI, RIAA and others. If that doesn't constitute a song being a hit, maybe they need to re-think the certification requirements!

I have always wanted to know if one hit wonder refers to literally just one hit, or if it can include several hits from just one album. If it goes by album, then Fun was a one hit wonder.
@alangil40 I think the term generally refers to one song, or one single by a certain artist or band. Never heard of it used to describe a band or singer whose album has 2 or 3 hits on it. That's not a one hit wonder.
@@alangil40 One Hit Wonder in my book has ALWAYS referred to a singular single hit and no more. Ironically A-ha were counted by Rick as a one hit wonder as they only had one hit in USA however they have had many, many hits in both UK (where I am) & in Europe.

Likewise. During the past 10 years, I've dropped right out of the loop when it comes to new music. I have my own playlists full of old music, and the only radio stations I listen to, don't play new stuff either. That Despacito was a huge worldwide hit for months before I even knew it existed.

Well, this helped me to narrow down when I entered my "grumpy old guy" phase of life and stopped listening to pop music. I'm pretty sure I recognized pretty much every other one hit wonder from all of the previous decades. This list baffled me. There were a maybe two or three songs that sounded vaguely familiar and a couple that I'd never heard but were aware of their place in the zeitgeist and 3 songs that I recognized as songs I had intentionally listened to. ("We Are Young" "Somebody That I Used to Know" and "Call me Maybe")
I agree. And it's not that there weren't good tracks in that decade, but Rick went all "this is what I heard at pizza hut" for some reason.
These songs were everywhere, all the time, if you hardly left your house I could understand not knowing them lol
@@Vivi_9 I was living as an expat in Asia most of that decade. I heard the fox one and of course Gangnam style. None of the others. To get music I went on Pitchfork, or Allmusic, and looked for things that matched my interest. I still do that.

I’ve been following Ella since her early Reddit days streaming with friends playing classic American jazz tunes in her living room. Her breathy voice is such an amazing instrument on its own. If you like this, immediately search TH-cam for her “sessions with strings” versions of songs from an earlier EP. They will floor you in amazement. The poetry in her lyrics is mesmerizing. Thank you Rick for further exposing Ella Hohnen-Ford to the world.

I wouldn’t call Lord Huron a one hit wonder… but maybe because I listen to particular Sirius XM channels rather than general pop channels, some of the listed artists had multiple songs I would easily recognize. Also Vance Joy, Walk the Moon, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Fun all had more than one popular song. And I agree with others that Somebody I Used to Know should be #1.

FTP had a couple songs just outside of the Top 40. That song was one of the biggest songs of 2011. Definitely should be on this list.
Ele King also had "Drunk (And I Don't Wanna Go Home)" (ft. Miranda Lambert) that peaked at #37, on the Billboard Hot 100. Fun. also had "Some Nights" and "Carry On" which peaked at #3 and #20, also charging on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.

I’ve watched all of Rick’s one hit wonder countdown videos and it’s interesting how this is pretty much the first video where we associate the songs with social media trends and “meme culture” in general as opposed to thinking of them as music for the sake of the music. Really makes sense as the 2010s was the decade when the phenomenon of “social media as a collective worldwide experience” really took off with the proliferation and democratization of TikTok and Instagram and it’s no wonder that the soundscape of what we consider “pop” changed forever!

I would disagree with Carly Rae Jepsen being on the list because she had a couple other hits. "Run Away With Me" is one of the best pop songs of the 2010s IMO. She also did "Good Time" with Owl City.
Since there’s really no technical definition of a one-hit wonder, I think it’s probably fair enough, though I will say, her album Emotion is excellent and most of its tracks eclipse “Call Me Maybe” in quality and replay value

One hit wonders are hard to classify. There's no set definition but if we use a definition given by the literal meaning of one hit wonder (in that they need to only have one hit), Fun. Fetty Wap, and depending on what you consider hits, Portugal. the Man, Walk the Moon, and more shouldn't count but I don't think that's fair to call them not a one hit wonder to the casual listener
I never thought jamming to 10 second music clips would make me smile so much.
Lots of Top 10's to be had yet: Classical, Gregorian Chant, Baroque, Comedic, Grunge, Goth, Girl Power, Halloween, Christmas, Forth of July, Air Shows, Ball Games, Audience Participation, about Cars, etc. Rick's got it all locked up!

Fr Feel It Still is an ass song especially compared to bops like The Sun, So American, Purple Yellow Red and Blue, and Modern Jesus.
They are one of our hometown bands, and they’ve put out some good stuff. I can’t think of a single song they’ve done that has approached anywhere near the Heights of “Feel It Still.” They did have some modest alternative radio hits, but I’d be surprised if anything else entered the top 40

The Man and Lord Huron be listed as "One hit wonders" when they've both had multiple songs AND albums that were *excellent* especially PTM's 2011 In The Mountain In The Cloud album. One of my favorites of all time. And VERY surprised Gotye wasn't number one. Somebody I Used Ro Know was ubiquitous in 2012 and thereabouts.

They're like the music I was listening to from the mid-90s and 00s, then nu metal and Cher came along to make music bad again. Luckily there's still some really good music being recorded you just have to know where to find it.

And their most recent album is a legit classic country tour de force. They make better country music than any of today's country artists.
This is the first time I hadn't heard every song on the list, and I only recognized 7. And several of those I wish I didn't recognize, lol. This really brings to light why I have very few memories of music from this decade. How is Despacito considered a one hit wonder? Both Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee have had other major hits. Even if you don't listen to Latin American music, Daddy Yankee's Gasolina was an unavoidable monster hit.
Latin charts don't count. US Billboard 100 Top 40 or UK Top 40 is the criteria.

Luis Fonsi may technically have had other songs make the top 40 of the Hot 100 but I highly doubt the average music listener in the USA who is familiar with “Despacito” can name any other Luis Fonsi songs. I know I can’t. Not to the degree of familiarity that Daddy Yankee would have with “Rompe” or “Con Calma”, or “Gasolina” as you mentioned. I think it’s a fair inclusion, especially compared to some others on this list.

Man....this takes me back to a very specific time and place. I moved in 2009 and all these songs were the soundtrack. Those were some fun years. Also....music sounds totally different now. Its pretty astonishing.

I liked "Feel It Still" because when I first heard it, I thought it was "I'm a rebel with a kickstand" and that imagery tickled me.
I thought the lead singer was a woman.... then I saw the video and I was like what the hell? Still a great song though. Love the 1960s vibe.

Fun wasn't a one-hit wonder. They had 'Some Nights', which peaked at number 3 and 'Carry on' was a top 20 hit. Psy isn't really a one-hit wonder either, but Gangnam Style was for sure a global phenomenon. My number one would be "Royals', but Lorde also technically had another top ten hit with 'Team'.
I might have included 'Pumped up kicks', 'Bulletproof', and 'I love It', but this is a solid list.
Lorde has a top 10 (Team) and top 20 (Green Light) so "Royals" doesn't belong here either. "Pumped Up Kicks" would have been a reasonable choice as I don't think they had another top 40.

Agreed. Most of these songs were pretty lousy and forgettable, with the exceptions of "Riptide" and "Somebody That I Used to Know", which were ok pop songs in my opinion. The 2000's and especially the 2010's were the beginning of the end of good music.
90s had so many more terrible one hit wonders tho

Having raised daughters thru the 2010s, this is the soundtrack to my early parenthood.
Fun had a couple other top 40 hits with "Some Nights" and "Carry On" (#3 and #20 in the US).
Carly Rae Jepsen had a couple, too. "Good Time" (with Owl City) hit #8 and according to Wikipedia's article "The success of the song broke the "one-hit wonder" label for both acts." 🤣 She also had "I Really Like You" which hit #39 in the US and had a music video that starred Tom Hanks.
Few remember those songs anymore. When we think of Fun., we think "We Are Young." When we think of Carly Rae Jepsen (something most don't ever do), they think "Call Me Maybe." No one thinks of the Owl City track.

Cool thing about 'Shut up & Dance'... It lends itself to the Lindy Hop... for those who know it, and can adapt the steps just a bit! Saw an older couple at a wedding do that to this song, like they were dancing to Glen Miller.
At 66 years young, I don't and haven't listened to pop radio for decades. Based on this selection (I recognized only 2 songs) I didn't miss much.
