Extraversion and Introversion are the basis of Jung's work, and one of the few parts that has survived and is accepted by psychologists today. There are quite a few different interpretations of what extraversion and introversion are. The common, modern understanding of extraversion and introversion is focused on how sociable people are. But that is a behaviorist definition and not a necessary result of Jung's definitions. This in one interpretation that I hold to strongly as I am not a behaviorist. Please consider the fallowing: Jung describes extraversion and introversion with the following statement: "Whereas the extraverted type refers pre-eminently to that which reaches him from the object, the introvert principally relies upon that which the outer impression constellates [sic] in the subject". So, extraversion is a focus on the object, while introversion is a focus on the subject. But what's that supposed to mean? It means that in order for anything to happen in psychology you need two things, a person to comprehend stuff, and something to be comprehended. In other words, a subject and the object they're looking at. That object can be a physical object, or an event, or an idea, or really anything that exists apart from the subject. Extraversion is focused on the information that reaches the subject from the object. They are focused on the object as it stands as an individual object on its own, its own thing, individually. And because extraversion loves objects so much it considers its own personal opinions and ideas secondhand. In other words, extraversion orients their personal ideas depending on objective data. Thus, extraversion can adapt quickly to changing conditions in the outside world, but may also have a tendency to follow the crowd and be overly influenced by generally accepted ideas. Introversion is focused on the effect that objects have on the subject. Jung says "that which the outer impression constellates in the subject". I think of it this way: imagine that your mind, meaning your personal ideas, your inner mental contents, the stuff that makes you the subject, is a wet clay sculpture. Now, as you wander through this thing we call life, you encounter objects, events, and things, whatever. These objects press their outer shell against your mind, leaving impressions of that outer shell on your mind. Introversion is focused on studying the contours of these impressions and seeing how they interact with each other and with what was already impressed there. Thus, introversion tends to come up with theories and ideas to explain the patterns in the things it's experienced. Introversion posits the ideas it comes up with between it and objects, thus orienting itself towards objective data based on its own personal ideas.
Wow an interesting insight! I'm a lonely extravert 😂. But it's great to see different kinds of people and see the inner person for who they are. I saw the film mufasa he started off being a slight introvert but he then becomes more extraverted and takka (scar) goes in the opposite direction.
I've always felt sympathy for "extroverts", who always have to seek externally, what I fell inside every single instant of my life. I do believe it's possible for extroverts to learn to be more introverted and vice versa anyway. To find balance in their lives.
Many - many years ago I read some book by Karl Jung- it was a short book. In any case one thing which was interesting too is that whatever is your dominant trait in intro or extro-version - you "dream" of being the other. So introverts (I would say me) get a huge rush from being the life of something public but we cannot sustain it - with me my health always let me down just when I was doing very well being out in front - I would over extend myself. I also controlled a studder by talking to myself constantly to hear what I was thinking and kind of agreeing with it or not - and giving it another go. When speaking I also had to control it all spewing out super fast because that mental cue was nto long lasting and I would have do to a reload.
Extroversion is a method of dominating others and oneselfs dark aspects such as depression, schizophrenia or simply laziness. An extrovert can actually be an introvert with many internal problems, a person who found out that being an extrovert will solve these problems. Remember Robin Williams
What about people who are split? When I am "on" I am extroverted and probably on the assertive side - though I also I enjoy big parties, fun, dancing, flirting. When I was younger I hated being alone though I loved reading so I could spend hours alone reading. Now at middle age it's like my base is introverted and misanthropist. I really NEED to be left alone for hours if not days at a time and people irritate me to no end. But when my party mode switches on, I'm back. I am never shy but I will stop interacting if I find my company boring, preferring my own company in that case. I have never found an explanation for this sort of 50/50 split of extro and introversion. (My mother is very introverted and my father was extremely extroverted, lol, maybe I inherited half and half.)
Introversion to extroversion is a spectrum. You cannot exist at 2 places on a spectrum at once. Being both introverted and extroverted means you are just in the middle of the spectrum, aka average.
Part of me always wonders if these stereotypes that extroverts get energized by social interaction and introverts drained is a bit misleading. As in, sure we see a preference with extroverts wanting to interact with the outside world, but given all this outwards directed energy, wouldn't they also burn through that faster? In the end, surely everyone has a limited amount of energy? I'd also like to imagine there are many kinds of social interactions -- say for example, workspace gossip, surely it would impact the more extroverted person more than an introvert simply because the social connection of extrovert is higher. Yet it'd be easy to be mislead by the overly simplistic ideas a lot of media presents! I believe stereotypes depict the opposite and I would love some deeper insight into these nuances! This might be my own bias, but wouldn't a simpler notion be that extroverts are outwards-focused, and introverts are inwards focused?
Evolutionarily speaking extraverts would be more desirable. What purpose would introverts have? Norman bates, Wednesday, Jason (Friday 13th), Leatherface, Micheal myers, pinhead and hannabal lectur are all introverted i would say. Getting kicked out of a group would be a death sentence but only the characters listed above has thrived. Maybe in our ancestral history we have such characters.

Ronnie is my Alter Eggo.
Seems I'm a bit of both.

Chucky could be the only extraverted bad guy I can think of. Jigsaw is another introvert. Not sure where Freddy sits on all this.
Boring...
Thanks!
