- Fly Fishing for big bluegill with poppers caught me some HUGE panfish! The popper fly was fished both slow and fast with huge success in the dead of summer. The popper fly was the Boogle Bug in white.

What is your favorite popper fly for bluegill?
Depends on the season for me.
I like spiders in may and cork style poppers in summer.
I will have to try spiders next spring!
@@secretjourney4815 My best catch on a cork popper was a coot. I snagged it in its webbed foot.
The betts bluegill poppers from Walmart are absolutely amazing. Who would’ve thought Walmart flies would be such killers?
@@jacksoncampbell7854 I will have to try it! I've used the Cream Fly (looks like a stonefly nymph) from Walmart and that slays too. Thanks for the tip

Great to see someone else flicking flies out of an open top canoe. A few of us do in Tasmania, most others using Hobie style craft on our local logoon.
Do you stand up to cast much?
I might have to tie up a Popper or two and gove them a go at dusk/ night.

Don't know where you are fishing bud but we catch a few 12 inch plus bream a year might want to head south lol but awesome video!

I’m just getting started with tenkara, but I looked through my long-unused stuff and found I still have two of the Heddon Hula Popper fly rod versions. I’ll try them when it’s less windy.
Gotta love the Hula Poppers! I have put so many fish in the boat with those over the years!
@@KissTheFish And Arbogast’s Jitterbugs. I grew up kind of poor, so in winter I would bring a pruning saw when fishing. If I found a lure someone had hung and lost, and if I could reach that branch I would cut it and get a free lure!

Boogle Bug always getzem! I have more luck with Solar Flare.

@@KissTheFish For the little Amnesia and Boogle Bullet I go with #8-10. These sizes make great tricks for bluegills. For the Boogle Popper, I have pretty good luck with #4 & #6. These bigger sizes will be slammed by big gills, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass. Now tonight in Wabash County, Indiana the temp has been on the downswing to mid 40's, but I picked up 5 nice gills on the Bullet and Popper. Last week it was a little warmer and the big male gills were pretty fired up. I've used black and white, pumpkin and dark green, but solar flare has always been a better choice for me.

Have u caught 13 inch shellcracker they are beast and 10 inch bluegills I love them So much

I know I’m a little late here but is that a size 4 popper?….The size up from the typical panfish size like a Betts Popper? I have the small ones too but that one looks like the larger size ones that I have.
That is the size 4! Great popper for bluegill and I use it for largemouth believe it or not!

Haha they are tasty. I really only keep them in the winter though. Everything is LOADED with yellow grub parasite around here during the warm weather

What is the weight rod your using? I have a 2wt Reddinton butterstick and an Orives Encounter 4wt. I want a 0wt though.
This was a 5wt Pfluger that was given to my son from a friend. I ended up borrowing it for this video. My go to rod right now for most of my bluegill fishing is my Moonshine Revival 3wt. I would LOVE to fish a 0wt at some point! My buddy loves his and it looks like so much fun

@@christie2999 so true! I had to order mine on their website. I will say they have the most amazing customer service ever. Mine came and had a small blemish on one section. I emailed them and they said it wouldn't affect the integrity of the rod but they would either give me a discount or send me an entire new section for free. I chose the new section for free. I literally had it at my house like 2 days later.
