    Anyway, today my wife told me to go to the market to buy some fruits and vegetables, and Chinese people had the funniest reactions when they overheard me speaking on the phone with her in Chinese! It was kind of like a phone prank but…in Chinese! Also I spoke with people in the market in Mandarin, Cantonese, Taishainese, and English!

      "Influencer" has negative connotations (for most people) in English, whereas the Chinese word that Xioama thought matched could be totally different.

    • @sergeantbigmac
      @sergeantbigmac 2 ปีที่แล้ว +432

      It has negative connotations in English mostly because of the immature actions and stunts by many influencers to go viral and grow their following... But to be fair when you step back and look at it, it does take a lot of hard work and creativity to carve out your own corner of the internet in an ever-competitive market and make a career out of it to boot. You are building a business from scratch afterall.

    • @BaldMancTwat

      @@sergeantbigmac To me, the word influencer makes me think of an egotistical "Instagram model" that sells shitty sponsored products and promotes pyramid schemes. I prefer the phrase "Content Creator" because it doesn't make me think of anything specific, but I would see that as someone who only does non-traditional media (Not T.V. or movies, only online stuff)

It was almost a year before I even learned that he was married with multiple kids at home. People do have a lot more respect for you if you speak their language. And the flip side of that is they tend to think of you as stupid or clueless if you don't. Both are examples of yet another prejudice we need to overcome. There are over 7,000 languages spoken in the world. Few people, even if they are determined, have the time and the money and the opportunity to learn to speak more than two to four languages. Which by this criteria means they are disrespected by millions around the planet.

    • @gordusmaximus4990
      @gordusmaximus4990 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      ts good and all, but this makes think about our societies.
      Allow me to explain, in the western world, is very normal a non ethnic person been talking the language of that place, there is plenty of non ethnic germans in Germany, speaking german, they were born there, they have german nationality and its normal seeing that today. Can be said the same in France, Portugal etc (not talking about the USA because there is no "ethnic americans" unless you talk about the native americans). It can be said, its even "racist" if you judge someone thinking they dont speak your language or assume they are not from that place.
      The other hand, Japanese, Korean or Chinese societies, have deep problems on that field. You can be born in there, but never seen truly as one of them. They make asumptions right away. But because they arent western societies, most people dont talk about this.

      @zepeterinma 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Switching is actually hard when i don't have coffee.
      I had to sit at the dinner table and switch between English, Polish, Russian, and Japanese constantly. keeping track of 4 convos in 4 different langauges and being everyones translator is tedious. I slipped up quite a few times throughout dinner, even though when my mind is on the rail of one particular language, I dont have any trouble finding words. Takes a few hours to really sink into a languages flow though.
      Also going between Russian-Spanish-English-German is hard too.
      Learning mandarin as my #7 Rn.
      I know about 1200 words so far, but its going to be a long few months to get to 2200-2500 which is where I start feeling good about speaking.
      I feel that my motivation for languages is far more petty than xiaoma though. I don't really like connecting with people and surprising them or anything.. I am just super paranoid and just hate feeling like someone is talking about me behind my back. And the process of studying is relaxing to me.

      Haha, dandelion is a delicacy in the olden times, ex. french soup. People only started to see them as weeds when the rich people in victorian times started to have a ‘clean’ garden. They did it to show off to fellow rich neighbors that they spend money to hire workers to have a ‘nicer’ looking grass around their house. Commoners copied them as usual, like marriage. Also, it saved many lives when there was a famine in ww2, which i heard from older people. Btw its the most nutrient dense veggie, except for seaweed (but thats under the ocean).

    Kinda sappy but true - I really admire how the people with whom you interact genuinely feel GOOD to talk with you! I was born here in the US, so my only frame of reference is through my grandparents. It’s a bit sad to think that immigrants have to give up a central part of their culture to assimilate, and you just keep showing others that their heritage isn’t invisible just because they want a better life for their family.

      In Canada, often immigrants do not assimilate - they form in ghettos and they keep their communities insular. Even after generations, their youth still speak with a thick accent, and cling to the ways of "the old country" which, in many cases, means holding views that are misogynistic, antisocial, etc. Arguably, their descendants are worse off for it - after all, you leave your country and come to another to start a NEW life, not to continue an old one. The American model, while in your eyes is "sad" is certainly better for immigrants than the Canadian model. That said, I don't know what the American model does differently, but it seems to work.

      Communication and interaction is key. How is one supposed to know if no one told you? How is garbage handled? How do you enroll school, what does it costs and what will the results mean ?
      And there is the third generation identity problem.
      If you aren't born within a nations borders , you will never get the same chances however much your efforts. And some companies exploit the hard working immigrants that just want to show their value and good potential to the new country. Others are tokens played like a puppet. @Alex indeed but the rules and cultures should be clear. Americans don't understand european traffic rules on crossings without traffic lights. There are priority rules and there are signs but you would have to do specific research to know and you need to find the correct information.
      I once had a problem with making the public buss service stop in a country where they had red buttons on the buss .Grow up in a country where red was emergency button , pushing it unnecessary would give you big fines and trouble. We had blue ones for normal stops and if there where not blue ones it would stop at all stops anyway.
      I worked on a airport and we had a problem with people constantly pushing emergency buttons on escalators ( making them blocked all day long). Turned out in their country escalators had a button to reverse the direction of the escalator and they where mistaken.

      @@Ejexion We have similar insular "ghettos" in many US cities, so that part is the same. But I suppose the one difference between the US and Canada is that the US gets a lot of immigrants who come here wanting to be American and choose to assimilate themselves and in some cases are more "American" and patriotic than a lot of multigenerational Americans are. It's also much harder to legally become an American citizen. It seems that Canada has a lot of easy inroads through old Commonwealth connections which tends to let people in who couldn't care at all about Canada or Canadians or your culture. Cultural appreciation does work both ways after all.

      Dandelion is healthy for you, it's not dangerous at all, the other lady don't know what she's talking about. Amazing benefits, it's packed with nutrients and vitamins. Look it up. 🙃

    This never gets old! I love how a lot the people feel proud that someone from a different cultural background knows their language. It seriously makes me want to learn too!

    Love to see a video of you speaking Irish 🇮🇪 but I doubt anyone in New York speaks it as it's not even spoken across Ireland. Would just be nice to see someone highlight and promote the language.

      As an Irish man raised in America I've always wanted to try and find someone who speaks it. The wor... c something or other (can't think of the channel) had a guy come up to him in one of his videos who spoke it and I have yet to hear it since

      @@TeamEchoBitch It's great your interested in the language but it's not too difficult to find someone who speaks it as we are thought it in school here I just ment not many people keep it up. You can see videos of Conor McGregor speaking it if that helps. Were you born here yourself?

    I love watching your channel. it is near and dear to my heart. My wife is Chinese, and I've been learning Mandarin. I love surprising her with new words and phrases.. I live in Mexico, so I'm learning Spanish as well. My Spanish is better than my Mandarin. It sometimes is a challenge when I have to speak both Spanish and mandarin in the same conversation, like being in a store and getting information from one of the employees and then translating for my wife.... I will sometimes mix up the languages... So much fun!

    I gotta ask, whenever you try food what do you do to stuff you don’t like the taste of? I don’t think I’ve seen you talk negatively about any cuisine you’ve tried
