Speaking Chinese as a foreigner is one thing, but seeing non-Chinese people reading is arguably more impressive to a Chinese person as reading in Chinese is really difficult. We definitely are not perfect in reading but we gave it a shot!
If you’re curious, we hung out in New York City’s Columbus Park, which is a center of Chinese culture in New York City’s Chinatown.

Like every Oba-san. Asians are obsessed with Study and hard work. My chinese buddy is a fitness instructor and runs a super successful chain of gyms, and his parents still cant accept his lifestyle and career. They mock him all the time and call him a jock and a meathead(chinese equivalent terms).. They are so brainwashed and sheepish. It annoys me people cant accept change and different lifestyle choices that go against the norm. Of course this isnt just Asian people.

    Hi Xiaoma,
I was really happy to find you on TH-cam! You see, I was born in Malaysia & moved to Seattle in 1982. Since the move, I lost 4 of my spoken languages (Hokkien, Hakka, Malay and Mandarin). By the way the only non English language I can read, write & speak was Malaysian. My Mom (who passed away from Covid) sent me to a catholic school because she didn’t want me to experience the hardship that she lived through.
It’s been 42 years now and I have a question. How would I achieve the level I used to have in my spoken Mandarin & Cantonese in the shortest amount of time. Can you please help?

Honestly, if you used to speak it, I imagine you would pick it back up fairly quickly. Honestly, just do what he does. Find the local spots that actually have owners/workers that speak those languages, and just go have lunch there every day. Just be friendly with the people there, laugh about your situation with them as struggle to speak whatever language. I don't know how old you were when you left, but I would bet within a month you would see a VAST improvement!
I learned spanish because I worked at a gas station in texas, where half our customers were mexicans who would come in and speak in broken english. I just asked them different words every day, until I could speak broken spanish to them. Definitely a great way to make friends you cant really understand, and learn to speak a language you cant really understand. Just gotta jump in! (or in your case, jump back in)

I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit Xiaoma. I think your reading level is higher than a 12 year old. I can maybe read Chinese at a 10 year old's level and I can tell you know many more characters than I know. Great job as always and keep learning!

Ok, I've watched quite a few of your videos and you always do your sponsor segments in STUY Town right near where my grandmother lived her whole life and was a second home to me. I sadly don't get back there much as he passed away a few years ago, but it's just awesome to see you in a place that has such reverence for me. Thanks for doing what you do!

I went to China my senior year of highschool and fell in love with the culture, people, and of course the real Chinese food. I always wanted to learn Japanese or Chinese, but being a highschool student not knowing what to do with myself I never had the confidence to pursue it. Whenever I hear a foreign language I just listen. The world is beautiful

I’m in Shanghai and trying to work on my verbal language (still early stages haha). This is pretty inspiring. Locals are really impressed when non-Chinese can respond in even basic sentences and it’s very rewarding to have conversations with them. They’re very warm once they feel the language gap is bridged a bit. I could understand a lot of what was being said without looking at the subtitles. I have no plans to learn how to read mandarin cos I’ve always said it’s too difficult but again, this was awesome 👏🏽 I took down some notes. Great videos.
