I feed Nulo and tiki cat canned foods. I stick to the chicken and Turkey pate with the Nulo and the chicken and chicken liver +liver, hearts & gizzards or duck and chicken liver +liver, hearts and gizzards for my cats. But because my cat is terribly allergic to methimazole, I’ve had to switch her off of those foods and put her on a thyroid diet from Hill’s. I hate the ingredients. She doesn’t always show interest in it either which can be very frustrating. I got both the dry and the wet in an effort to give her some variety, as she used to get Nulo in the morning, tiki cat at night and greenies and churu for treats. Sadly she can’t have anything she loves anymore. It’s heartbreaking.
Thank you So-ooo for your video! I've known for a while know that cats need meat & water (are obligate carnivores) however my Mainecoon (who looks a lot like your kitty in the video) has lost more than half his weight & diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. (as do a lot of canned food cat & dog food! Even Blue buffalo has carageenan, Merrick has another ingredient in it that is harmful - I can't remember the ingredient name, but there are so many out there!) it is used as a thickener & is known to cause gastrointestinal inflammation & other bad things. I want to get away from it, but having a difficult time finding another canned cat did that is affordable & doesn't have carageenan in it! What do you feed your cat? I've been thinking seriously about making home made food for my kitties, and for my 4lb Morkie, Charlee, she just turned 2yrs on St. Patty's Day ~she look like a white Yorkie 😊 do I know exactly what is in their food.... And, putting a supplement into their food as well, but I don't know where to a to start. What do you feed your cat? Any advice? Hi! I know this is an old comment but wondering if you had any updates you could share on your food search and cats health since then? I have a very similar feeding regime as you described with premium dry + standard friskies wet as needed in combo… had to laugh reading this comment since your cats have the EXACT same flavor ‘preferences’ (for some of my cats its become more of a flavor *demand* for the turkey and giblets…one cat particularly is not shy to share his immediate displeasure, hootin and holerin the SECOND he runs in and realizes the can-opening sound was coming from anything other than t&g friskies ….he’s become a total tyrant when it comes to any other wet foods not coming from the purple cans 😂) The mystery hyperthyroid patient in my home now is also a big longhair boy, he’s half maine coon himself but his hair color is much more uniformly black (well, or it was…) without the signature maine coon colorations /tabby pattern. He was so hardy before this that I really felt he was bulletproof almost. every vet he had ever seem had always genuinely complimented his coat and massive ultrawhite canine teeth and general health and hardiness. thsn a few years back, he gets a growing spot of pure WHITE-white hair at the bottom of his belly - at that point he didnt have a color hair on him that wasnt just a different tone of black or the somewhat lighter color undercoat…. turns out the spot kept growing to cover his belly white. now he’s half bald, pulled it all out starting with the white and continuing all over his belly and insides of his arms and legs 😢 mine is a bit young to have developed all these issues this past year or so since he’s still a few goos years from his 10th bday. I really hope you found something that worked for your boy… i still tear up to think of cats i’ve had many years ago. unfortunately the food industry (for animals and humans alike tbh) is set up against us in many ways, and the mess that is made of human and animal health from the near universal adoption of shady preservatives or texturizing agents or whatever kinds of food additives (even by the high end pet brands!) necessary for making a profit on a product that needs to be shelf-stable and chemically contaminated to that end… the food companies dont have to pick up the pieces from detrimental downstream effects that reveal themselves over time, the medical / veterinary sector does! despite many best intentions of individuals in those fields (and ofc there are some who keep up w the latest research in their fields and maintain their critical thinking skills and apply them to boot - absolute gems of doctors and vets to their patients!) unfortunately there’s so much going on - if not just for the fact that we are so separated now from our own (and our pets’) food products with modern industrial processes (that give us the luxury of huge supermarkets with what seeems like endless options for food) - but it’s such a huge change in how and what we are consuming in our food, in such a short time period it is really unprecedented in human history. pet food as we know it (and most human food too now save for fresh produce meats etc) is like a huge ongoing experiment on everyone eating it. a total departure from food as so many generations of men and scientists and doctors of ages past had known food to be really. so in that way imo it’s a losing battle to expect medicine or veterinary practice to keep up with rapidly developing food production (preservation) methods and ingredients. statistically speaking, i’m sure the novel presentations or aggravations of human and animal pathologies that manifest over years, downstream from our diet “choices” (made by manufacturers not us lol) is multiplying at such an incredible rate with all these adulterants now and toxicities from modern industry in general that it is impossible for human institutions and research to keep up with the logarithmic development of new disease presentations in vet medicine… hope you and your pets (whoever they may be - i realize i’m replying with a 2 year delay right now haha) are all well. i can FEEL how well loved your cats must be through the screen with your comment. whether you found a solution or not for romeo (ofc i pray you did! but i know the reality of navigating these issues esp as they age, and how inconsistent AND expensive vet care often proves to be (terrible combo…) it is so hard… but despite our best efforts sometimes that just means their time has come. i hate that that may be the case here or even for my own poor baby boy right now suffering with constellation of strange issues….. but either way: i’m comforted knowing that he, the cat, knows he is deeply and dearly loved and that’s in a way the best you can ask for, love is what gives all our lives meaning…. and i can tell your cats know too that they are loved. they tell us this all the time paying back with their own unconditional love for their humans in turn…. getting teary even thinking about it 😭 but that’s life right! doing the best we can under circumstances we can’t control. anyways hope you see your comment from 2 years ago with such love for your cats was appreciated however late or irrelevant this reply may be haha❤
Im in the same situation too. My maine coon he lost so much weight it took me going to 3 different vets to get an actusl diagnoses! It just goes to show we all have to keep advocating for our little loved ones.. i am grateful we finally got a diagnoses and got him on the thyroid meds hes already gained some weight back but now im on a mission to find some foods for him that wont upset his tummy. If anyone else has found anything specific please let me know as well. Many thank yous to your channel as well iv been power watching ur videos since we got his diagnoses🙏❤
I'm poor, but my cat comes first. Is it too risky to try natural solutions for 2 months prior to testing I just found out my baby lost half pound in 6 months. I did switch her to top quality cat food, and her fur already seems to be improving. I wasn't feeding cheap food before, but now I'm avoiding all fillers and plant protein. Her favorite is freeze dried and hound and gatos.
Note from the earlier version that diabetes is unlikely on the current diet and Thyroid Gold cannot affect the tumor that causes feline hyperT, only masks symptoms.
I did not put my cat on the pills, so that's why we tried the yd expensive diet. I don't think it's a long-term thing.. I'm cutting out dry I think I bought my last drive for the other cat and he keeps trying to eat it but I realized it is full of soy.. I think he's putting on weight I think the pumpkin in his cat food is helping the vomiting though he was constipated so I give him the petroleum jelly. The yd I'm almost positive it's caused the constipation. He has put on weight I haven't took him back to get his blood redone yet.
My cat got two pills a day for hypothyroid ... but after a while she got skinnier and didnt want the meds.. she is hungry and doesnt want her dry food., she is 15 so we give her anything that she will eat.. she loves meat but looooves cheese but is that good for a cat? I dont know anymore... the wet canned food she eats but iscexpensive
Sounds like you need to do blood work... Keep in mind that T4 needs to be MID normal. Dry food isn't good anyway, so not eating it is fine. A little cheese is okay. I have another video about appetite issues that you probably should watch.
I had been feeding my cat wet food with the white lining in the tin and have been wondering if this caused her hyperthyroidism, BPA?? in lining. For dry, I give her a grain free kibble. I am now transitioning to raw or lightly warmed raw.
Is your only recommended store brand Fancy Feast Classic then? Could you list the names of the other brands you mentioned, I'm not familiar with them but would like to give something else a try. I do get Fancy Feast but not sure if it's the Classic line. I have tried to look up online what's best, the Iam's and Science Diet even Blue, my cats would not go near any of those. I'd like to try to feed them healthy food though.
There are likely other supermarket brands that are okay. I just haven't gone through them all. Among the higher quality brands, Weruva, some of the Merrick lines, some Nutro, some Halo, Hounds & Gatos, and Nulo are good options. The non-seafood Tiki foods are very good but very expensive. There are certainly others worth using. In general, I don't suggest Iam's or Science Diet/Hills, although market pressure has forced them to bring out some foods to compete with other companies. Overall, many cats seem to prefer the pate varieties, but some do like the "shredded" or such.
I learned through research and my vet that Radioactive Iodine Treatment is a cure at least 95-98% of the time. I am considering this treatment since my cat is only 7 years old. Through research I also learned that fish as a main ingredient is a contributor to hyperthyroidism in cats, but it doesn't cause the disease in all cats.
That success rate is a general percentage from information gathered long, long ago and shouldn't be applied too fully to all 131 clinics. There are a number of factors that can affect the quality of the success. Also, fish doesn't really cause hyperT. The small study that accidentally started that idea found that some fish foods are exorbitantly high in iodine some of the time....but sometimes too low. There was a mild correlation with hyperT but nothing definite. Most likely, there can be a mild spike in some cats, but the fish doesn't cause the tumor. That's caused by PBDE's used as flame retardants for 30 years or so...and it appears that the chemicals used to replace them also cause the tumor.
@@forrestposton Yes, I found an article stating that the PBDE's are found in canned cat food. Everything you said is true, including that cats should eat meats but I have concerns about the chemical in the cans.
@@MsOliveLeaf You're thinking about BPA in cans, I think. (Although fish accumulate PBDE's among other pollutants, there's no PBDE's in most cat food). BPA is not used as much as it once was, and it doesn't cause the tumor involved in feline hyperT. As with iodine levels in fish, the study of BPA showed just a slight correlation with T4 but no correlation with tumor development. Please watch my video about what causes feline hypert.
@@forrestposton I read it's called isoflavones or BADGE (bisphenol-A-diglycidyl ether) that is found in aluminum cans with pop-top lids. These canned foods have these chemicals that cause thyroid problems, and it said that BADGE levels in salmon, whitefish and seafood have 12 times more BADGE than dry or non-seafood products. Like you said, they should have protein from meant so if the canned food is a problem than what can we do? My cats don't like certain brands that come in non-aluminum cans.
I am in a roller coaster right now trying to find the right dose of methimazole. He can't afford to lose anymore weight. He is down to 6 pounds. My vet keeps changing the dosage once we do a T4.Up down up down.My cat is 13 and can't keep doing that.
Amy Avin, As I said to an earlier comment, you really need to join the Facebook group. There's a lot to discuss about dosing options and issues and helping the digestive system.
@@valbakke There is a link in the description. If you're on a mobile device, you may need to click the arrow on the right of your screen in order to bring up the description. However, if you just go to FB and search Hyperthyroid Cats, that's the name of the group.
that is my fear too. I feel guilty if it was me bringing the ginger too much to the vet or cattery that all that stress affected a previous very healthy and fat happy cat. After his blood test and T test my fear is too much unnecessary tests instead of to do good will do more damage to his health?
Thank god I came across your channel! I was so devastated when my cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. But she’s borderline. Going to take her off dry kibble. She loves raw meat. How much slippery elm should I give her? Unfortunately I just ordered the gold herbal supplement for her. Guess I wasted my$. Again God Bless you 🙏
Glad to help. Note that there's also a video about a borderline diagnosis if you haven't already watched that one. Raw meat by itself isn't enough for long term unless you add one of the supplements made for that purpose or are using a commercially prepared raw cat food. If she's having issues that need the slippery elm, you can do 100-200mg one to three times a day. I strongly suggest joining the Facebook group linked in the description of the video. There is also a group that just moved from Yahoo to Io Groups. I'll have the proper link for that soon.
@@nancymacavoy3427 Most dry foods are sprayed with stuff to make it extra tasty, which is what can make it hard to switch. Just keep in mind that the "best" food is one a cat will eat. You want meat as first ingredient, zero grain, best with no soy, and minimal other fillers....potatoes, peas, etc. Other than that, it's budget and the cat, mostly the cat. The Fancy Feast Classic line isn't as good as it once was, but it still gets the attention of many cats. There's also Tiny Tiger, which is exclusive to Chewy. Might also have luck with some of the frozen or freeze dried raw foods, such as Primal or Stella & Chewy. (And many pet food stores will take back food a cat doesn't like. If you use chewy.com, they just ask you to donate it somewhere and credit your account.....they understand.) See you on the FB group soon....and here's the link to the Io group, which is email based: groups.io/g/feline-hyperthyroid
my older cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and i am wanting to switch him to a healthier diet… they wanted me to give him prescribed wet food but it so insanely expensive for how much he eats:/. Thank you for your video. I am going to try to give him more protein with lots of hydration
Sorry for not replying but have had a lot going on and just discovered how many comments came in with no notifications. In case I didn't mention it in the video, using a good frozen or freeze dried raw food isn't as expensive as it looks because they don't have to eat as much. A 10 pound cat only needs about 4 ounces a day. (But I would avoid Primal because they changed ingredients after being bought out...and feeding guideline nearly doubled, which is a bad sign.) If you want to do your own raw food at home and use a "completer" to make sure it's nutritionally balanced, I'd suggest EZ Complete from FoodFurLife.
Of the dry foods, it's one of the better choices, but overall "kibble" just isn't as good for cats as canned or raw (commercial raw or properly made recipes at home).
Took my baby to a new vet and he was recommending feeding my cat a food that contains a grain “because the cat needs it for a healthy heart”. UM, WHAT?!?!?
That's misunderstanding but one a vet should never make. When "grains" were taken out of food, they were often replaced by other plants, especially peas, pea protein, and lentils. Too high a level of these is suspected in some heart issues, particularly with dogs but to a lesser degree with cats. So it's not that grains are good for the heart but simply that plant materials should be replaced with more and better meat materials.
@@hyperthyroidcats6532 hi The vet clearly said I need to find a grain that agrees with my cat because it’s necessary for a healthy heart. Meanwhile, my cat got suddenly ill today and I had to euthanize her. I’m so very upset.
I have a Korat cat, love her very much and my vet wants to do a blood test that I cannot afford. She's lost 2 pounds in a year, she's a little over 10 years old from what I can estimate. What do you recommend for her diet? I have been giving her whatever she wants within reason...she seems to always be hungry, even begging for my food. Thank you for the videos. Take care ❤

@@forrestposton Thank you again. I will watch your other video about the causes.
Thanks!
Thank u for ure time advise and video God bless u
Thank you.
Would human mince meat be ok to give my cat who has the condition together with the medication?
Depends on the exact ingredients used, but with the brandy or such used, I wouldn't give it....or only tiny amounts. Cats can be unpredictable.
I can tell you that the group will want to see copies of the blood tests, so if you don't have those, ask the vet's office to email them to you.
@@hyperthyroidcats6532 What is the facebook group?
Forrest Poston thanks. Very good to know. I have hound and Gatos but she wants the dry crap. I will keep trying! Joined the Facebook group 😏
If you use chewy.com, they just ask you to donate it somewhere and credit your account.....they understand.) See you on the FB group soon....and here's the link to the Io group, which is email based: groups.io/g/feline-hyperthyroid
thanks
You're so funny & thank you.
my older cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and i am wanting to switch him to a healthier diet… they wanted me to give him prescribed wet food but it so insanely expensive for how much he eats:/. Thank you for your video. I am going to try to give him more protein with lots of hydration
Did you figure this out? Same situation
(But I would avoid Primal because they changed ingredients after being bought out...and feeding guideline nearly doubled, which is a bad sign.)
If you want to do your own raw food at home and use a "completer" to make sure it's nutritionally balanced, I'd suggest EZ Complete from FoodFurLife.
See my reply to the original comment.
you didn't mention hyperthyroidism once.
How about “Origen “ ?
@@hyperthyroidcats6532 hi
The vet clearly said I need to find a grain that agrees with my cat because it’s necessary for a healthy heart.
Take care ❤
Your cat is seriously ill.
