  • Make your Switchblade Kick Butt or How to lubricate a knife
    git2 gitup
A switchblade (also known as an automatic knife, pushbutton knife, ejector knife, switch, Sprenger,[1] Springer,[2][3] flick knife, or flick blade) is a type of knife with a folding or sliding blade contained in the handle which is opened automatically by a spring when a button, lever, or switch on the handle or bolster is activated. Most switchblade designs incorporate a locking blade, in which the blade is locked against closure when the spring extends the blade to the fully opened position. The blade is unlocked by manually operating a mechanism that unlocks the blade and allows it to be folded and locked in the closed position.

Well, you didn't really make this knife kick butt, but you did make it work after a fashion. Here are some tips from 'the old days' (tm):
Make sure, before you try anything else, that you are depressing the release button completely. I have several springers that catch up just like this one does if the button is not fully depressed. I mean, really honk on the button and hold it down until the knife is opened and locked. If the pin on the release arm drags against the blade even a little, then the blade will not open fully due to friction.
Take your time! You appear to be looking for an instant fix here, but there isn't one. The graphite may have worked if you'd spent a few hours opening and closing the knife after applying it. No matter what solution you try, it's going to take a while to work properly. Whatever you use will have to work its way between the blade and the liners down to the pivot pin. Relax, watch some tv and just sit there opening and closing the knife for a few hours.
Yes, as someone commented a year ago - gun cleaner and oil. While I fully understand the argument that oil will attract dirt, if you keep your knife clean, that will be much less of an issue than you think. And, of course, once you've gotten graphite down into the mechanism, then adding oil is going to create sludge that needs to be cleaned out or that sludge may affect how well the knife opens.
One huge problem with these kinds of knives is that the pivot pin is peined down pretty darned tight to avoid blade rattle. In ancient times, we used automotive valve grinding compound if none of the above tricks worked. Apply a small amount of that, and sit there and open and close the blade (again, for a few hours). This will grind away a tiny bit of the brass liner. Then, you'll need to clean out all of the valve grinding compound - gun cleaner, followed by working a sheet of paper between blade and liners (to clean out as much of the grit as is humanly possible), and then the gun oil. If you use too much valve grinding compound, then the blade may (depending on how tight the fit between the blade and the pivot pin is) rattle a little from side to side.
If nothing else works, then the problem is probably either that the back spring is too heavy for the blade (really - a back spring that is too heavy works worse than one that is too light) or the kick on the blade tang is poorly designed/machined. In this case, the only thing you can do short of disassembling the entire knife and grinding away part of the back spring and/or reshaping the kick is to CAREFULLY bend the spring up from the lock point. Release the blade but don't let it lock open, wedge a screwdriver (standard flat-blade) between the flat end of the spring and the tang of the blade, and bend it up just a little - further than you'd think is still 'just a little'. The problem with this solution is that the blade, once opened and in the locked position is going to rattle up and down as the back spring will no longer be tight and flat against the cutout on the blade (the pin just holds the blade in place, the fit between the flat of the spring and the cutout on the blade tang is what makes it hold steady).
Hope this finds you well and that these suggestions help!

Olive Oil..Old italian trick that works Just as well as any expensive lube..And Allways push the release-button the whole way down, thats the most important, And by the way, when you don't carry the knife,And it is in the drawer or where ever, leave it open, And save the spring of constant tension...it Will last longer..

The WD-40 with that p t f in it is basically a Teflon lubricant that in combination with the graphite you had previously dumped into the pivoting point is more than likely what's causing the night to work "better" the locking tension catch spring in the back that holds the blade in the open position may also be a little heavy, good tip when working with graphite try mixing it with some alcohol that will evaporate away quickly it also drags the graphite deeper into the mechanism

I'm often mystified that people think owning a thing makes them qualified to give advice about using the thing. Posting a vid of yourself attempting (and failing) to do something for the first time does not constitute a "How to" video. If I didn't know how to do something (play the clarinet, for instance, or field-strip a 1911 Colt 45), my first thought after I bought the clarinet (or the gun) would not be to post an instructional video. I might want to WATCH a few. Now, CLICK HERE to watch an instructional video about how to play the bagpipes. I just got them today!

Wow totally forgot about his video. Well to be honest I shot the video to test a new action cam I just got and not to try and upset old white guys. If you notice at the end of the description it says git2 gitup. So thanks for commenting on a 3 year old video. As for me Im going back out to the garage to Finish waxing my convertible Porsche. Dont worry I wont try and teach you how to wax a Porsche, you can stick with your bag pipes.

@@bondscalper How is calling someone old and white an insult? In case you didn't notice you're white too, fatass. Also lmao at "going to the garage to wax my convertible Porsche". What a fucking loser lol, I bet you thought you sounded like a boss saying that. The fact that you don't specify the model or the year and you think "convertible" is impressive shows that you're just as clueless about cars as you are knives. You're over here acting like you're Jordan Belfort because you own a shitty old Porsche. The funniest thing about people like you is you're the kind of douchebag who wishes he had the money to be an even bigger douchebag which somehow cancels itself out and makes you a mega douchebag. It's really something. Anyway enjoy trying to impress fat, ugly, used up, single moms with your "porsche", little man.

The video is now over 6 years old but I watched it anyway as knives of all types still come with this problem. And I am always looking for the quick fix. When I was a kid I had way more patience 'breaking in knives' and would spend hours opening and closing them. We didn't really have access to high tech anything lube wise. It was either 3 in 1, WD-40, gun oil or motor oil. As kids we literally just wore the metal away with minimal lube. The idea was to be able to open a regular lock back as fast as a switch blade. This was when knives were tools and not pieces of art. The general method was to wrap the blade in something that would not allow it to cut you and then hold the knife by the blade and swing it back and forth rapidly using the handles weight to work the action. I am sure that is not good for me the blade but I was a dumb kid so there you have it.

With an Italian stiletto, what worked for me is pressing the button until it locks into place. if you half ass the button it usually stops right when it hits the bar to leave the blade open in place. This is because Italian stilettos usually open a little slower than other new assisted knives out there. Instead of pressing the button, hold it. it should work and if not lube it with some good gun oil.

The problem is not LEAP application, but rather the spring. The spring does not have enough power to overcome the lock on the back of the spine.

  • @ryanweintraub9448
    @ryanweintraub9448 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

So I bought one and the blade literally swings freely when it doesn’t fully open. I dunno if it’s a weak spring, the lock spring too tight or whatever. Also when it does fully open it’s hard as heck to close. It’s like the lock is too strong or the pin that goes into the lock is too long. I’m not crazy. You all would say the same thing.

try a good gun cleaner and lube. spray it good with gun cleaner and let it sit for awhile then wipe it down good maybe even use an air compressor and blow all the crud out and use just a little gun oil to get it working right. with a switchblade you need to hold them very firm with one hand when you push the button to open it, a loose grip will no let the blade open all the way.

In my experience, while lubricants are essential, it's just as essential to hold the switchblade correctly, making sure that the butt and the back of the knife is tucked and secure in the palm of your hand. Having a good grip on your switchblade will increase your reliability at least 90%, in spite of the quality of the knife. It's a similar value in "having a good grip on a gun, when firing it." Thank you for this video! Good luck with everything!

This guy flat out lied, he did not fix the knife, the knife is defective ( i had one like that that I fixed). The rivet at bottom is not holding the pieces together, notice how his knife only worked when he put his 2 fingers at the bottom and push the button with the thumb of the other hand and a lot of people were saying the guy is not holding the knife correctly (THIS IS THE ONLY WAY HE CAN MAKE IT WORK). I don't understand the gain by lying to people.
