My wife was violently ill and hospitalised in 2006 in Phuket with food poisoning due to an uncooked meat burger from the hotel we were staying at. I ate NOTHING but street food the entire 14 days in Thailand and was completely fine. A doctor at the time said to me, do not eat western food in hotels as they have no idea how to adequately prepare it. Eat local only and you'll be fine. Wise words.

The US needs to focus on its own society & stop meddling in the world end of. Your society is looked upon with horror from the rest of the West ie school shootings, violence rates, prison sentences, homeless, drug overdoses etc I just hope we never go down your path. To finish off whilst we access free healthcare, you don’t. It’s very sad & with Trump back it will only get worse, sorry.

What an adventure! Father and son.
Loved seeing how free Otis is - a typical kid without a care in the world. Not restricted like city kids.
Loved him observing the woman living rough on the street below, his thoughts racing and observing her life.
Great to see the old( grand) station is still active and those trains that may be scrapped will live on in his memory to tell his kids of adventures of long ago. I enjoy watching the Thailand I know and more of the rural parts that I would like to visit and explore. Cheers and best wishes ! Enjoy!

Great to see Otis enjoying himself and looking forward to his trip with his dad. Dual pricing my original idea on this wasn't to great, but with age I got used to it. The one thing I don't tolerate is though when you are expected to pay 10x the price that of a Thai, which used to be case on local Thai beauty spots here in Isaan. Now my daughter takes care of me. She calls me crazy ferang in front of them, shows my yellow book, and ID, has a discussion and hey presto I get the reduced price not the Thai price but somewhat reduced.
We all end up smiling in the end.

Go to a Thai National Parks ...they charged 20 Baht for Thais ..and 200 Bath for foreigners .then the government would tell businesses to charge the same price for everyone. Go figure! The day may come when the goose will no longer lay Golden Eggs. GREAT dad ...you're sure are bringing your boy up to be respectful. Neat!

Did they just start pricing more for Farang on the trains? I live near BuiYai and I have never been asked to pay more. Way back when they were letting people ride for free, I rode for months for free, then one day the conductor told me I was supposed to pay. I think I was the only one on the train that had to pay---15 baht, about $0.50 US. Other wise I don't mind having to pay more for zoos and parks. Even if 10 times the price the locals pay is still less that the price of a McD burger and a fountain drink. Try getting into any of those in west for that price.

I've lived here just under 3 years now, the double pricing don't bother me anymore. It was more the hypocrisy that annoyed me than the double pricing itself, that in the UK, an immigrant will cry racism over the slightest thing yet we experience casual racism with double pricing. On another note, I know for a fact that Africans, Indians and Carribeans that live in England will also get double charged themselves when they return home because the locals know they live in the west and are on "big money", so maybe it's just the way things are...

You do have dual pricing in the UK. An example would be, if a foreigner wants to attend a university in England the price is different than those charged to UK residents. In my country, Canada, if my child wanted to attend university in a different Canadian province, he would be charged differently than those residents of that other province. In certain USA states, out of State residents are charged different prices to enter State Parks. Dual pricing is not as blatant as in Asia, but it does exist in most “Western” countries.

I normally have no issue with dual pricing. When I think back in Toronto all the 'tourist areas' where I, a Canadian, loving in the neighbourhood, had to pay the extra 'tourist prices' because I happened to live near a 'tourist area' ... that doesn't seem fair to me. Why should I have to pay extra for a tourist area my taxes go toward maintaining.
That said whenever I go to a Thai tourist area where they charge for entry I usually show my Thai drivers license and that sometimes gives me the 'Thai pricing' ... many times it doesn't ... but I went to a local lake up here in Chiang Mai, and the 2nd last time I showed them my license and they still charged me the Farang price, but told me next time take my pink ID card and Yellow house book ... this time not only was I eligible for 'Thai prices', but because I was over 60 (I got in free ... my Thia wife had to pay 20 baht lol!! )
My take on Thailand protecting their people is I am 100% for it. A Nation culture (or cultures as the case may be) should be the top priority of that Nation ... Thailand has one of the most unique cultures on Earth ... I applaud this culture, as even though at time the government might forget that responsibility (getting caught up in Bangkok's "western influences' and forgetting that Thailand is far more than just Bangkok, and most Thais are proud of their traditional culture) the King and the military are there as a backup (that might seem like I'm supporting a 'dictatorship', but it's more not supporting a government that doesn't remember it is working for the people of the country rather than Western financial institutions.)

If the UK implemented dual pricing with UK citizens getting a much cheaper price than foreigners there'd be calls against the racist policy. Same goes for only UK citizens being able to own land. Again there'd be calls for changes to the racist policy.
Countries like Thailand and most other countries in Asia do not believe in diversity. There are no calls for making the population of Thailand more diverse with more blacks and whites becoming citizens in Thailand. In general from what I've seen in my travels in Asia diversity is something that Asians do not believe in for their countries.

Dude, you are pretty good at accessing most things, but calling Starbucks coffee decent tells me you've been living too much of a rural life. As far as teaching children is concerned, they pick up on the double nature of life, which is where good parenting comes into practice. You show them how to create strong foundations not through open conversations but by deeds and your reactions to things around you. Watching you, I can see you already know that.

Dual pricing I also support. There's a lot of traffic going through these attractions. Even dual pricing things are still reasonable. This way these attractions can be kept up, and people from around the world can enjoy them. It seems farangs ( not you Ryan) want to take take take. But when asked to give a little back they get upset. They should stay home (in their own countries). Pay the high prices there and be happy. Because there's no dual pricing. And

Dual pricing in my opinion is a slap in the face to alll non Thai nationals. Its also very condescending to the Thai nationals. Yes the poverty line is very visible as is the very comfortable and wealthy line same globally. Many Thai people have done extremely well for themselves and are more affluent than many farang. Most of the long staying faring including myself have and will continue to contribute to the Thai economy and it gets beyond annoying when we get extra charges for being assumed as an ATM. You are a good lad but stay guarded. Enjoy the trip with your mate.
