@@JasonJrake apparently people worry about water resistance between battery changes on battery operated watches which is not a dig deal if you do the changes properly by yourself with the right tools. The solar ones on the other hand are not suited for climates where one doesn't get enough sunshine and people therefore go to ridiculous lengths to keep them charged. I have had solar watches die on me as they were lemons in the core so I don't see neither of the sides being of a significant advantage over the other.

She was tired of changing batteries every 9 months.... but small ladies watches maybe have smaller batteries too? I've not seen solar complaints on TH-cam watch channels, but I'll pay more attention.
Well that addresses my two main complaints with the Casioak models: the digi screen being too small and difficult to read, and the buttons being difficult to press. I like those big fat buttons. The case/strap combination is an interesting bonus. Casio drives me a bit crazy making so many different color versions but often few or zero with decent contrast and legibility of the hands and indices. Let's see how long it takes for this one
One of the coolest new case designs I've ever seen. As soon as they make one where the markers have a bit more contrast, I'll add it to the top of the wrist list!
Terrific review Jody really appreciate the comparisons with the 2100 and 5600, very useful to see and really cives clear context the the wearability and dimensions. I just got the DW-5600G-2 which has the same translucent turquoise-fade-to-black strap and case and I absolutely love it - its far and away my favourite colour! I would probably wait for to see if this new model is released with solar as I find that much preferable to replacing batteries. When the Carbon Core Guards came out, I opted for the GA2000. I liked that it had a regular 24mm band with quick release.. It's the only G Shock I've seen that accommodates standard watch straps without an adapter. It also has a molded resin case that encloses the metal case back. It's shaped to the curve of your wrist making for a comfortable fit. I prefer it to the Casioak myself. I do like this new model though. Particularly in black and red.
Casios, and especially G-Shocks are amazing watches. I prefer the understated black ones over the red colored versions. My favorite is the CASIO G-SHOCK GA-800.
What a cool look: really spaceshippy! I just wish they'd add some lume to the indices -- sure, the light is great, but sometimes you just want to look. Thanks for a fun year of vids, Jody. Happy new year to you and the fam!
Bit of a come down from the GA-B 2100 with no solar and no model with positive display. I hate negative displays they are so unreadable compared with the positive ones. Also the resin strap seems unduly long compared with the Casioak model. No doubt these will sell like all other G-Shocks. Usual excellent review Jody, Happy New Year to you and the family.
Happy new year and yet another great review. IMHO I think the BT Solar GA B2100 is a better watch. The new model doesn't have solar which is disappointing as is the negative display on all the models. Two things which are an improvement though are the larger buttons and the 24 countdown timer. It looks a little too much like a novelty watch for me. Totally agree that the new G's are more wearable, I just wish they would prioritise making it easier to actually tell the time!

This looks nice, but I wonder if the digital seconds and day date are more legible than the 2100 series. I have a GA-2110SU-3AJF and the digital readout is virtually invisible.
Decided to rewatch a bunch of G-Shock videos of yours after starting the day with this - a great reintroduction to the brand. Ended up ordering a GW-5000U at the end of the day to go along with an ancient and well worn G-7700. Really appreciate your joy and enthusiasm for the G-Shock line.
NIce, I have a G-7700 in the blue/yellow colourway. I've wanted to replace it for ages, but the battery hasn't gone flat. I did buy a GA-2110ET-8ADR the other day (beautiful grey), but feel it's maybe too nice for a daily to replace the g-7700. I wouldn't mind one of these as per the video, but not seeing it in the English speaking pacific region.
@@AdamAus85 The G-7700 has been such a faithful watch - I have a 2007 model in standard black. It replaced a Timex Ironman that didn’t survive a mountain bike accident. The G-7700 has had only one new battery, about three years ago. This review seems like an update to the G-7700, hopefully you can find one, I’d go for the black if I was to make a purchase. The Casioak you’ve chosen looks great!

I’m always intrigued but the translucent color ways, but my personal taste is always more reserved when it comes to watch design - black goes with everything for me. The exception is the Orange Monster that has been my true daily watch for 13 years now.
No Tough Solar is a deal-breaker for me! I have more than one watch and with battery watches I always have the problem, that the watch I want to wear always has empty batteries. And constantly running to the watchmaker with 5+ watches is really annoying. Yes i know, you can also do it yourself. But the waterproofness is then no longer guaranteed and it also takes time, you need the tools and also some skill because everything is so small.
Agree, I lost my g5600 because of a botched battery replacement by an authorized service. It was its 3rd battery, and I also replaced the seals on it. It came out clean and working, I took it under the sink, got rained upon and it was fine. Its not until 3 months later that I took it swimming and find it filled halfway with water. Now I do learn to replace my batteries myself and always replaced the seals and O rings as I did it. But having a solar is a Godsent. I would imagine a bluetooth capable g-shock needs more frequent battery changes, and it urked me.

Great review. My biggest issue with analog G's is legibility, at least on some colorways. Unless the colorway is very high contrast, the hands get lost in the dial and my old eyes can't read the digi displays. I still love them, but they can be hard to read fast.
Happy new year! I like the case design and look, reminds me of a Lamborghini for some reason. Good size buttons. But, na, legibility and negative screen are a turn off.
A definite niche product. Looks only it's mother could love. Quartz accuracy of +/- who cares because it doesn't have a minute track so at a glance its guestimating which 5 min marker it's nearest to. I dont have a G-SHOCK and this wont change that.
Was given a preview of this model if I want to preorder one. I was looking for the ga-b2100. Tbh, the only downside is the absence of the solar. Especially if there's bluetooth function. I only use the bluetooth of my g-shocks for time setting, so its barely useful for me. Its beautiful and imo is better built than the ga-b2100. But I would pass this for the ga-b2100 anytime. If they started with solar and ditched the bluetooth, I might have chose this over the casioak.
I've been thinking about this watch for a couple months. Thanks for putting it on wrist because it looks bigger online. On your point though WHY IS A POSITIVE DISPLAY NOT COOL ENOUGH?! I'm with you one of these could have been just that much more legible and still cool without the negative display.
Thanks to Jody recommending G-shock for daily beater and that's how I got into researching the best G-Shock for myself. Recently just got myself a really good deal on GW-B5600HR-1, for just under 90USD. It have almost everything, Band-6 Radio, Bluetooth and Tough Solar. Will be my new beater watch for quite a long future... 😁
I think the 2100 may be better when you compare both. I just don't get the design theme of this one, especially the illegible mode indicator. The biggest drawback of this model is that if the bezel gets scuffed up, you will have to buy that half with the strap as well. You cannot replace the strap and the bezel individually.
A real young person's watch I feel, which isn't a bad thing. I also appreciate the sizes that Casio are going for on these, they feel quite accessible and unisex compared to the ones released two-three years ago. I still think nothing will ever beat the "square", particularly the GW-M5610U which for me is the perfect G-Shock. A design icon in its own right.
I think you found what's going on! These are not really meant to be used as watches but rather fashion accessories. And why legibility isn't that big of a deal. Jody essentially reviewed a fashion watch lol
@@metatechnologist exactly, I much prefer watches that you can actually read the time on. So of it's analogue the hands & markers need to be legible, no good if the hands blend into the background or if its digital the numbers etc need to be large enough to read as well
I have the stealth black version, and you're spot-on regarding its readability. I'm about ready to open it up and paint the hour indices with some white automotive paint. If I botch the job I'll buy the red one and switch the case and band.
Purely by coincidence I happened to buy this watch impulsively when shopping for new sunglasses yesterday 12/31/22. I love the style but I think I’m going to return it due to what you pointed out about the legibility. It was ok in the bright lights of the mall, but when I put it on at home and then today even during the day, my eyes hated the dial. It’s a really cool looking watch, but I’ll leave it for the younger enthusiasts and just get a positive display square like I planned to.
The red one looks like someone a gosh darn freedom fighter from the year 2093 would wear while taking out our robot overlords. That’s how futurist they look to me. finally a Casio g shock that have the original generation effect (Jody, my dad,) on me! Not the best! No solar........? I bought a few days ago a GAW- 100B-1A. Multi band 6 and solar...in my opinion better. And Casio should consider to make it possible to choose for 5 and 10 secs of duration for the light.
I've maybe repeated myself in the comments several times now... my solar Casio has put all my other wacthes into the drawer... and they haven't seen the light of day in about a year... I now have a better understanding of ho easy is to go the Casio route and never look back :)
Got my 2100 in the first 6 months after release, still my everyday watch. 👍🇨🇦 And just ( April 8,2023 ) got my Black Edition GA-B001-1A, fantastic watch for the money,$145.00 Canadian, it is now my everyday wear watch, taking over from my GA-2100-1A1.
I have GbD 800 in army green with Bluetooth. As an overlook Road truck driver who is in a different time zone every 1.5 days the Bluetooth functionality does wonders for me automatically sinking up. The app notifies me when I'm in a new time zone it's great. And I just connect my watch to my phone via Bluetooth. And I don't have to charge my watch every day like a smartwatch
I’m done buying quartz that’s not “solar”. Too many watches, not enough wrist time 😆. Do check out the “new” Citizen Rolan series, 40-20, sapphire crystal, 4 versions, and rather understated for an Eco Drive Citizen 😉.
Enjoying to wear it , for I am traveling too much especially using world time feature connecting to cellphone via Bluetooth but unfortunately impossible to find spare strap anywhere…
I truly adore the ocean blue (or greenish) jellyfish version. It reminds me of a knockoff jellyfish g shock I had when I was a kid where lights lit up around the bezel whenever I pushed the light botton. Maybe I'll buy this when I get the chance.
That’s a good looking watch but what really is the difference other than it’s a round casioak And I’m with you on the negative display I used to love the negative display but my eyes are 50 some years old now and I can’t see them anymore without my glasses on and off and squinting in a spotlight

Great watch, great review! I’m on vacation at the beach in Mexico wearing my yellow 5600 surf edition G and there is something special about having such a durable, affordable and fun watch! If I brought my Swiss luxury watch I’d be having a very different experience, worrying about scratches and if it’s still waterproof enough, etc.
Looks great, like most G-shocks. But only the 2100 and 5610 I like to wear. The other ones are a bit, how to put this, "reheated meals"? I'm gonna try one on the wrist from my local dealer, maybe that changes my opinion.
I like that the lcd is larger than the GA2100, but the lack of third party replaceable straps and solar power puts me off, it would get annoying in the long term, especially because I'd always be using the light to see the negative display properly.
Dear Santa, I would love to see Casio make an Oak with a PIM along the full bottom semi circle, and move the (GA B2100 style) Mode Indicator to the top left quadrant, and the CASIO to the top right quadrant. - oh and a vibration alarm for us hard of hearing, plus in Dark Grey with Orange Neon - perfect.
Ha! ...and I literally just placed an order last night for the yellow 2100 - 3 requirements - solar, Bluetooth and legible and hell, a 4th, Yellow why not? I braced myself to be disappointed before even receiving it after having watched the vid, but, so pleased to say, no 😁👍. I do like these but maybe it's just an age thing, definitely prefer the legibility ( and yellowness) of the one on order and definitely solar rather than battery in this day and age. I am really looking forward to it as the last GShock I owned was one of the very early editions - yes, I am that old!! It lasted years and was never shown any mercy. Thanks for the vid again Jody. I’m spoiled by solar, and will hold out for that. Bigger issue, the negative displays. I picked up a Tokyo version and couldn’t read it, especially in poor lighting. I’ll stick with me solar square, thanks.
Love the translucent colorways! Aaaand immediately hate the legibility. Being relatively of the same vintage as Dr. Jody, I really would just like to tell the time easily. If they could do a B002 with a more sane dial that's readable but keep the insane case, I might want to pick one up. And drop that weirdness at 9 o'clock. Still sticking with the ol' 5600.
It’s a nice watch. I had the stealth one and looked amazing but had to return it as it didn’t fit properly on my wrist. I have small wrist and most G’s have long strap and have a lot of excess strap protruding and doesn’t like how that looks. I was hoping not having that issue with this one, but that was not the case.
...and when there's a solar version I'll line right up for it.
So many quartz pieces, especially G-Shocks, on that list for me.

The black one reminds me of the F-117 Nighthawk. I almost bought one here in Singapore but changed my mind. Prices here are way lower, only SGD120.

Both being chiming hour watches, a full comparison of this Casio with a Ch Ward Bel Canto is needed very early in 2023.

Why couldn't Casio release these with solar at launch? Changing the battery requires opening the back which can compromise water resistance.

I've maybe repeated myself in the comments several times now... my solar Casio has put all my other wacthes into the drawer... and they haven't seen the light of day in about a year... I now have a better understanding of ho easy is to go the Casio route and never look back :)
I ordered the red one. Gonna give it a go. If way too much I’ll realize quickly then it’s an easy return to Amazon.

Got my 2100 in the first 6 months after release, still my everyday watch. 👍🇨🇦 And just ( April 8,2023 ) got my Black Edition GA-B001-1A, fantastic watch for the money,$145.00 Canadian, it is now my everyday wear watch, taking over from my GA-2100-1A1.
I have GbD 800 in army green with Bluetooth. As an overlook Road truck driver who is in a different time zone every 1.5 days the Bluetooth functionality does wonders for me automatically sinking up. The app notifies me when I'm in a new time zone it's great. And I just connect my watch to my phone via Bluetooth. And I don't have to charge my watch every day like a smartwatch
I’m done buying quartz that’s not “solar”. Too many watches, not enough wrist time 😆. Do check out the “new” Citizen Rolan series, 40-20, sapphire crystal, 4 versions, and rather understated for an Eco Drive Citizen 😉.
They should have put lume on the indices/indexes.
Enjoying to wear it , for I am traveling too much especially using world time feature connecting to cellphone via Bluetooth but unfortunately impossible to find spare strap anywhere…

I truly adore the ocean blue (or greenish) jellyfish version. It reminds me of a knockoff jellyfish g shock I had when I was a kid where lights lit up around the bezel whenever I pushed the light botton.
Maybe I'll buy this when I get the chance.
That’s a good looking watch but what really is the difference other than it’s a round casioak And I’m with you on the negative display I used to love the negative display but my eyes are 50 some years old now and I can’t see them anymore without my glasses on and off and squinting in a spotlight

They do look nice, but the negative display is pretty useless. Those aren't as easy to mod to positive as the digital Gs.
Yep, solar, atomic, positive lcd displays and punchy white hands and indices, then I might consider it. Attractive enough, Jody, but that’s about it. Good review of a watch that needs a fair few tweaks.

Is the MRGB2000GA-1A worth the $8000 price tag? Is it really so special to justify the price?
Definitely a watch for the younger crowd. WVA-M650 variants are as wild as I can get.
Great watch, great review! I’m on vacation at the beach in Mexico wearing my yellow 5600 surf edition G and there is something special about having such a durable, affordable and fun watch! If I brought my Swiss luxury watch I’d be having a very different experience, worrying about scratches and if it’s still waterproof enough, etc.
Looks great, like most G-shocks. But only the 2100 and 5610 I like to wear. The other ones are a bit, how to put this, "reheated meals"?
I'm gonna try one on the wrist from my local dealer, maybe that changes my opinion.
I love how they increased the size of the screen and moved it higher which enhances symmetry visually
Yhe GAB001 really snuck up on me. I bought it in a whim and find myself wearing it a lot! Great size and very light!

I like that the lcd is larger than the GA2100, but the lack of third party replaceable straps and solar power puts me off, it would get annoying in the long term, especially because I'd always be using the light to see the negative display properly.
Dig the blue one - guess that will be my first new watch next year. This madness NEVER ends 😝

Dear Santa, I would love to see Casio make an Oak with a PIM along the full bottom semi circle, and move the (GA B2100 style) Mode Indicator to the top left quadrant, and the CASIO to the top right quadrant. - oh and a vibration alarm for us hard of hearing, plus in Dark Grey with Orange Neon - perfect.

I braced myself to be disappointed before even receiving it after having watched the vid, but, so pleased to say, no 😁👍.
I do like these but maybe it's just an age thing, definitely prefer the legibility ( and yellowness) of the one on order and definitely solar rather than battery in this day and age.
I am really looking forward to it as the last GShock I owned was one of the very early editions - yes, I am that old!! It lasted years and was never shown any mercy.

I’m spoiled by solar, and will hold out for that. Bigger issue, the negative displays. I picked up a Tokyo version and couldn’t read it, especially in poor lighting. I’ll stick with me solar square, thanks.

Love the translucent colorways! Aaaand immediately hate the legibility. Being relatively of the same vintage as Dr. Jody, I really would just like to tell the time easily. If they could do a B002 with a more sane dial that's readable but keep the insane case, I might want to pick one up. And drop that weirdness at 9 o'clock. Still sticking with the ol' 5600.
It’s a nice watch. I had the stealth one and looked amazing but had to return it as it didn’t fit properly on my wrist. I have small wrist and most G’s have long strap and have a lot of excess strap protruding and doesn’t like how that looks. I was hoping not having that issue with this one, but that was not the case.

I love G’s, but this one just doesn’t do it for me. I would like a 5600 style with a separate light button in front like the 6900’s.
