    You can tell how much the Doctor misses Gallifrey. The eyes and the shaking of his voice. But the way he reminisces and speaks is so beautiful and sad. I miss Ten and Eleven so much. ❤️

    This was my favorite thing about Martha Jones. She made the Doctor talk about things on HER time table. Made him confront the things he always tried to sweep under the rug, and it helped him.

      The Doctor needed Martha, in a number of ways. It's just the fact that things ended up coming down to her falling for him, and him not being over Rose yet, meant she got fed up and left. But her attitude as a _friend_ what exactly what he needed to give him that push to talk about things, and realizing finally how she felt and why she was leaving also gave him that push to really try and move on properly and get over Rose. After Martha, Donna then filled the perfect niche. A good friend who would push him to do the right thing, but was sassy, could verbally spar with him by virtue of sheer attitude, and was not romantically interested.

    My god, people have said it before but David in this scene just radiates pure, raw emotion. You can see The Doctor is on the verge of tears remembering his home. Describing things that, when you stop and think about it, he probably took for granted. Growing up on Gallifrey, those things were just normal to him, a second sun rising over the shining mountains, the silver leaves catching the light to look like a forest on fire. As the old saying goes, "You don't know what you have until it's gone." You can see the sadness in his eyes remembering a home he can never go back to, sights that he will never see again.
    This is why, in my opinion, David Tennant is the best Doctor of New Who, he brought forth The Doctor's pain and anguish better than anyone else. Eccleston never really had a chance to shine, Smith played a man so stricken with grief he chose to forget his pain, Capaldi played a Doctor who refused to lose anything else, breaking his own rules in order to get what he wanted. Whittaker, despite the awful storylines, played a woman who's entire life was a lie, who didn't know who she was.
    But Tennant? He played a man who once had everything, and now has nothing. His past keeps coming to haunt him, and he can do nothing about it. The more he runs from it, the more it comes right back into his face.
    Bravo David Tennant, bravo.

    This was actually an incredibly touching moment. Amongst the backdrop of a million souls singing a song of freedom, peace and renewal, an old war veteran describes the paradise he once called home, lost to the war that claimed his family, friends and all else.

    3:03 That’s why the singing towers of Dirillium was so sentimental to The Doctor beyond his last date w River as number 12. The wind blowing through the towers giving you a song when you need it the most reminded him of the breeze through the trees on Gallifrey. A piece of home right there to share with a piece of his heart.

    Respect, Martha. Respect.

    • @ellikapappa
      @ellikapappa 9 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      Well, it was a very sensitive subject and I think this scene makes Martha seem kind of rude and insensitive. Obviously she couldn't know that his planet had been destroyed, but it was obvious at he wasn't comfortable talking about it and I at least think it was a little rude to pressure him into telling her

    • @rachel-not-again-armamus89
      @rachel-not-again-armamus89 9 ปีที่แล้ว +112

      well she had do deal with the whole "being ignored cause he's so hung up on Rose" which I understand that the Doctor misses her, but Martha's been doing everything trying to get noticed and he's just ignoring that. She was fed up with all the times he would push away the subject or get a short answer that was a lie, and said "you know what, I think it's about time he told me the truth."
      but the truth just so happened to be a bit too much
      "Only ask him a question if you know you can stand the answer."

    All these years later after first watching this and it still gets me, David’s acting is superb. It might be just nostalgia but this for me was when Dr who was at its peak and I remember my family always waiting each Saturday for this. I remember eps like this was always shrugged off the week before but when they had this scene to end it nothing could be more perfect. Dr who or any tv show will ever captivate an audience in the way that this scene and season 3 ever will. David tennant was at his best this year.

      It's not just Martha. Every companion receives a lot of hate. So does every incarnation of the Doctor. Ah, Whovians. They're impossible to please.

      Very true, although to be fair Martha does seem to get the MOST hate from what I can tell. (Look at the Teens React to Doctor Who). But yes, Whovians ARE impossible to please. And help make up the angriest fans I've ever met.

      That's the point, she knew about Rose, she can't be jealous. Plus, she had just met the Doctor.

    This scene was one of the many that I really connected to as a child browning up and watching the Doctor.
    Martha standing her ground and not taking any of his half-baked answers as good enough was amazing to me, because no other companion (other than the newer ones e.g. Clara, Bill, Nardole) would have done that.
    The Doctor finally giving us an insight onto how gallifrey looked from how remembered it, was brilliantly done and you can see that David was close to tears in that scene. It shows you that the Doctor does miss his home and would be overjoyed to see it in the sky without the aftermath of the time war. Those bright silver trees and the wind that sang through them, creating natural music. A burnt orange sky and the citadel.
    Watching this scene after seeing DOTD, it really does break your heart because he still believes that he pressed the button. I love the acting in this scene and to this day, it is still one of my favourites.
