@@ospreyphil8995 actually, he already *did* know. Before the events of "The Engines of War", the Time Lords assigned the War Doctor with the task of finding The Master because he disappeared. The Time Lords didn't know where he could be. And, as we know, he fled to the End of the Universe.
@@benjaminodonnell258 Or given the events of The End Of Time, it may not be a good thing point blank. At this time of writing, the Time Lords were as bad as the Daleks by the end of the war.
3:43 From the look on the Doctor's face, it's almost as if he can feel the fob watch being opened, and as he remembers the Face of Boe's final words, it finally becomes clear to him. "You Are Not Alone" wasn't just a message, it was a warning. A warning, because there's only one other Time Lord that could've possibly survived the Time War, and he's been hidden in plain sight all this time. Genuine chills.
And of course since The Face of Boe is Captain Jack he's remembering this incident far in the future for him but in the past for The Doctor. Timey-wimey stuff there!
As a child, I always got the impression that the Doctor did indeed sense the fob watch opening, at least subconsciously (he did say in "Dalek" 2005 that he'd sense in his head if there were any other Time Lord survivors in the post-Time War universe), and his frantic yelling at "Yana" not to open the watch gave me the impression that he'd also sensed at the moment the fob watch opened who the other Time Lord was.
It is a testament to Jacobi's acting ability that he can swap from kindly old man to evil alien criminal in less than a second. It is two COMPLETELY different performances and it is BRILLIANT! I really wish we had seen more of him on screen, though his audios are great. This guy scared me more than any incarnation besides Delgado. He was terrifying without even having to raise his voice. That is the sign of a magnificent villain. Quiet is always scarier than loud and the best master's (Delgado, Jacobi, and Missy) understood this.
And, unlike gatwa didn't feel the need to inject 'gay energy" into the character Jacobi's Master didn't go around snogging people and being camp He plated the Master as an evil, cruel, and malevolent being as he's supposed to be
2:36 That sudden scream shows the Doctor was losing his cool, which doesn't happen very often. It's a clever little moment that adds sympathy and depth, and its like has been sorely missing the last few series.
Russell T Davies said in the commentary for this episode that everything that happens in this episode is pretty much in service of pulling off the twist ending. For example: The only reason why 10 and Jack have to fix the engine is so that Yana and the Doctor are separated. It makes you realize how committed Davies was to getting this reveal right. That's something you don't really get with Moffat. He prefers to show you one card from his hand and then ask you to guess the rest of his cards. It's a different style and I even though I enjoy it, I can't help but miss the dramatic flourish of the Davies era.
And keeping the promos spoiler free ! ABC Australia did have a short 15 second promo with him saying "I am the Master" but luckily I had recorded the episode and stuff before, so in didn't see it till _after_ watching. And the moment I heard that chuckle… I knew. That's what's gotten worse, shocks revealed. Dark Water had clues to the Cybermen, like the design of the doors logo being a Cybermans eyes and other subtle hints - and they gave it away in the "next episode" promo of the previous episode !
@@casbot71 it seems to have rebounded with the reveals this season though! The reveal in spyfall pt. 1 and the reveals in Fugitive of the Judoon were extremely well kept secrets
The Master is hands down my favorite Doctor Who villain ever. Because he is probably the scariest and most threatening to me. Also the theme song itself is just has my heart going fast.
If only doctor who was like this now. Imagine how good Capaldi would be with a story like this! I miss the times when the soundtrack sent shivers down my spine.
My thoughts exactly. I want the show to go back to this style. The music, stories and even opening credits were perfect. I wish they'd switch them back. The episodes are just nowhere near as strong as they were :/
Jereme Mitchell Jesus. Pass me the sick bucket. As excellent as RTD's era was (in fact better than Moffat's on the whole) he did have some flaws, such as the awful Doctor/Rose romance, the writing of The Master and way too many invasions of Earth. The stories were also not "perfect". Every writer has his bad episodes and the RTD era was nowhere near perfect, so stop acting like it was.
Robert Lythgoe how was it not perfect? The doctor and Rose romance was great as they both had great chemistry, the master was very well acted and actually had humour and how was their to too many earth invasions?
One thing that Davis could do with his seasons was the music. It was perfect for this season and this moment. The way it builds when Martha notices the watch, then when Yana opens it. Perfect in every single way. Awesome scene though and one of my faves.
Honestly this is the greatest Master reveal in the new series. Not just because this was the first we saw of the Master after the Classic Era officially ended with the 1996 special. But because the way it is done is just so brilliant. The way the Doctor immediately starts to panic as if he already knows it's the Master. The way Yana hears evil words from the watch. "The drums! The drums! The never-ending drums! Open me you human fool, open me to summon the light and receive my majesty!" The way we can hear Roger Deldago's Master say: "Destroy him! Then you will give your power to me!" Because I never watched the Jon Pertwee Era, or any Classic Who for that matter, I can only imagine how goosebump-enducing it must've been for all you Classic Who fans when you heard that sinister voice. The way it cuts back to the Face of Boe saying "You. Are. Not. Alone." And at that point the Doctor completely realises. So amazing. Missy and the Spymaster's reveals were good too, but they still weren't half as brilliant as this. Russell T Davies truly deserves to be on the same pedestal as Hinchcliffe and Holmes, as the greatest showrunner/writer in Doctor Who history. I'm so glad he's returning!
Joseph Simpson Really? I can remember being shocked as Hell when Martha turned the Watch over, and that was enough. He was another Time Lord, that was shocking enough.
I mean we never saw the master after 1996 and he'd been killed before, so when I heard Anthony Ainleys laugh and roger delgados monologue from "the Daemons" I gripped the side of the sofa, my little brother had no clue what was going on
The coolest parts of this scene were hearing one of Delgado's lines and Ainley's sinister laugh when Professor Yana was looking at the watch. Fans of the classic show like myself were seriously marking out.
This is the main thing I miss about the Davis era. The subtler ways they'd build to the season finales. No cracks, no common themes, just easily overlook-able hints that pointed towards an incredible revelation. And the best part is they happened smack dab in the middle of an otherwise fairly normal episode!
i agree; bad wolf, you are not alone, the hand, there’s something on your back, rose being back, they were all so subtle that when they actually came to the big reveal it was so much more jaw dropping
Now this is how to bring back a character as significant as The Master. The tension, the music, how The Doctor reacts to the fact his only living "relative" is his worst enemy. It's all so perfect.
I disagree, for me 'The Pandorica Opens' has the best cliffhanger of New Who, the Doctor is locked away in an unbreachable prison and the universe has just blown up...... for me that was the best cliffhanger so far
Interesting to watch Jack's reaction as Martha mentions the Face of Boe's revelation - wonder if John Barrowman had received the script for "Last of the Time Lords" by this point so as to allow him to respond to the name-check here accordingly? Regardless, even if I'm reading a little too far between the lines in this case, one could argue that it's hearing this which prompts Jack / Boe to utter the words "You Are Not Alone" come the events of "Gridlock". In many ways it's the bootstrap paradox (as recently described in "Before the Flood") at work again, although at least this time we're certain that the Master forged the identity of Yana, which in turn helps Boe to structure his message to the Tenth Doctor in New New York. At the same time, however, Boe wouldn't have known to give the Doctor and Martha his message if Martha hadn't mentioned it to Jack as a result of her hearing the message from Boe...and now my head's starting to ache again.
3:20 Martha says "think what the Face of Bo said." She said it in front of Jack so he should realise she was talking about his future self because he was called that in his past.
Raymond Johnson jack did look at her confused but he most likely thought not to bring it up as they were busy. After all it could’ve been a coincidence.
Not only that but she said "his dying words"... and Jack should have known at that moment that if it is him they were talking about, he will eventually die. However in later episodes as well as in Torchwood episodes he still questions whether he could ever die so he either didn't make the connection or doesn't fully believe it. Great scene nonetheless, first time I notice this detail as well and I've seen this episode numerous times.
But there is no logically way for him to come back. He exists as the master only in this episode for about five minutes. Unless it's earlier in Yana's life where the watch causes him to enter a state where the becomes the master but only for a limited time and after that he forgets it all. Hmm.
***** I'm sure that's Alex MacQueen's master. And also he said he was found as a child, a human child. A so the previous master was so scared of the time war that he turned himself into a human child. Unless that's just part of the alibi.
***** yeah. But then I don't really see the Master as the sort of person that would actually be a "war master". Rather he takes the chance of having the complete new regeneration cycle and legs it. However the time lords could easily track his timelord DNA to enslave him in doing the war. And so scared he turns himself human to hide from them which is when he is found as a wee naked child and brought into a new family. What do you think?
I love John Simm, but Derek Jacobi would have been SUCH a great Master. So menacing and creepy, and much closer to the classic Master. This is one of the great missed opportunities of modern Who.
In "'Ello, 'Ello, 'Ello", the Doctor Who Confidential installment for "Utopia", Derek Jacobi mentioned in his interview that one of his ambitions since the 60s has been to take part in Doctor Who and Coronation Street. Well, he's done Doctor Who, but will he ever get to appear in Corrie? I love it when we briefly hear Roger Delgado's voice and Anthony Ainley's evil laughter as Professor Yana/The Master inspects the watch.
Been watching this show since I hid behind the sofa in 1968 from the Yeti aged four. Have had to put up with many let downs and near misses, but this, in my opinion, was the greatest moment in Dr Who history. There's been many a howler in the new version but this was the moment that Dr Who got it spot on!!.
I literally LOVE that shot right before Yana opens the watch where the camera rushes in on him; his life's work is finally reaching fruition as the rocket blasts off but 100% of his attention is suddenly on a broken watch. The way I see it, his true persona began flooding back into him from the moment Martha forced him to actually look at the watch.
I absolutely love how this plot twist was handled, all that foreshadowing and buildup leading to The Doctor panicking and understanding The Face Of Boe’s last words about how he’s not alone…
This season, in my opinion, had the best climax at the end. All this build up and hidden messages, like the election posters and subtle messages. Then this. Then the severed heads of people from the future and alternate timelines. I was so impressed when I first watched it. I honestly hadn't been that big of a fan of the endings of the previous two seasons. The only redeeming point for both of them had been the emotional aspect.
3:44 I just realized the reason why the doctor froze, he's sensing the regeneration energy being released, he's not just mesmerized by the spaceship's launch or remembering the face of boe's last words, he's literally feeling another time lord's presence
I can only imagine what an incredible experience it would have been, to be a classic doctor who fan and watch this reveal when it aired, it would've been crazy
I thought John Simm was great as the Master. I hear someone complaining about how his Master was never serious, but you must remember that the Master is also a Time Lord. Time Lords sometimes change drastically. Take the Third and the Fourth Doctor for example, two very different Doctors. While the Third was a sarcastic mentor to his companions, the Fourth was an absolute lunatic. Yes, I agree that Delgado and Ainley were way better than Simm, but at least give John some credit. And I also heard someone say that Eric Roberts was better than Simm. You must be out of your mind. An American Master? Really?
Yeah, like dang. If John Simm's master is a ‘parody of himself’ like fans say, Eric Roberts is the interpretation of The Master to someone who's never watched the show.
I absolutely love how DJ changes his face from the sad, generous professor to the realisation he’s the master. Such a brilliant performance with no dialogue 😀
I never liked the John Smith persona that the Doctor was hidden inside of so as to not have to destroy the Family of Blood. So I was happy when the Doctor opened his "watch" (for that reason & because of course wanting the Doctor back). But I mourned when Professor Yanna opened his. Because aside from suspecting that the Time Lord who was coming back was going to be very dangerous, I really liked Yanna. But of course at the same time as a viewer I was happy that the Doctor was getting his foil back. It's a shame we never got to see more of Jacobi as the Master.
3:43 That face. He knows EXACTLY what's just happened. Also, Time Crash is just after this, and 10 tells 5 that the Master has just shown up again. 3:43 is him realising that time has come.
this is why I love Russell T Davies run on Doctor Who, he brought in amazing stage actors who express emotional scenes a lot more than TV actors the way Derek Jacobi goes from an upset reminiscing scientist to a cold calculating villain in the space of a few seconds is epic
Just remembered when I watched this for the first time... I didn't know who the Master was, but I read some short description and I didn't know when he would appear... And when I watched this scene for the first time - my pulse increased, I started panting... It was beautifully unexpected! After two years this moment still gives me the shudders. This is the reason Utopia is one of my favorite episodes and Doctor Who - is my favorite TV show!!!
Derek Jacobi is one of my all time favourite actors, every role he has done throughout his career is just superb. I also loved his performance as Nicodemus in The Secret of Nimh! :)
God damn it David tennant's acting in this scene. When he asks Martha 'what did he say?' and then he just doesn't even wait a second before screaming the question at her again. When I first saw this scene I never got the impression that the doctor was excited that another time lord survived. The doctor looks outright terrified at the possibility of a Time lord surviving the time war. And with hindsight after watching past Matt Smith and a little bit of capaldi's era, there were only two time Lords who could possibly still be alive after the time war. Rasilon or the master. And either one of those two being alive after the time war is a terrifying idea.
Remember when Doctor Who had some energy and excitement to it. I miss the days when the Doctor ran, or exciting music played. The current show has got so dull.
At the time of u commenting this capaldi was the doctor or has just regenerated. He was amazing (my opinion). But when u compare capaldi era to Jodie’s so far. There’s no competition peter was THE DOCTOR Jodie is lacking in the role.
This reveal was so well done. Introducing the watch in an earlier episode so the audience would understand the significance. The mentions of Harold Saxon during the whole series. The Face Of Boe telling the Doctor he's not alone. The people the Doctor helped save in this episode becoming his enemies in the next two episodes. The contrast of the really nice old man to the evil Master. Most Doctor Who fans knew The Master even if they didn't watch the old ones. It was just brilliantly done. The music was great as well.
@@CantDraw-bq6pj It was horrible and I doubt part 2 will be any better. I'm pretty sure only the return of Russell T Davies can save Doctor Who now. Along with a new Doctor. Or maybe the return of Capaldi ? he might have been the best Doctor of the whole series, even though his talents have been wasted by bad writers.
@@billmurray7676 yeah have to agree that episode was quite shocking. The worst thing now is if they were going to bring in a new doctor the next doctor would have to be female otherwise the backlash the BBC would get if they replaced the 1st ever female doctor with a male after being the 2nd shortest run as the doctor would be huge.
The shaky long distance camera zoom into the master and TARDIS in the background to the soundtrack beats it's just epic. Seriously the cinematography during action scenes in the RTD era is unmatched.
Notice how The Doctor starts freaking out when Jack says he may not be the last Timelord, you’d think he’d be elated to hear this but no he’s scared because deep down he knows if there is any other surviving Timelord it’s definitely the one he fears the most.
I had never paid attention to the sound... From 2:47 you hear sound bites from the different Masters over the course of the series... Anthony Ainley's chuckly, Roger Delgado's bravado... Only just noticed that now. Oh, and I would have LOVED to see more of Derek Jacobi as the Master.
What I love about this is that 2 episodes before, in The Family Of Blood we're shown how far the doctor can really go if you chose to mess with him or the ones he cares about, but in this, the doctor is just terrified, I don't think we've seen him this scared before. And yes he did say that he was scared when he was about to die in 42 with the sun parasite but this here is genuine fear, the kind of fear that paralyses you and leaves you speechless. You wouldn't know what to do when you're scared like that and omg David crushed that performance (I kinda get the same vibe from Capaldi when he realises he's talking to young Davros)
A better reveal than Missy's (but I still love her :P ) This was such a hateful casting in my opinion. Jacobi should have stayed on as the Master; he's perfect!!
I love the intricate writing of Yana saying he was found with it naked. It shows that he went from a time lord to human as he had no recollection whatsoever of how he ended up where he did or why he was naked, but plants the seed that it had something to do with the watch. Something that essentially erased his memory as it altered his biology. Makes you wonder what the first few minutes-hours were like for Martha when the doctor turned into John Smith in Human nature/ family of blood story
Rewatched Utopia recently and never appreciated how good the music is in this sequence. This scene has turned into one of my favourite character introductions as it was a brilliant way to bring back the Master... You got to feel for Professor Yana though...
He was so sweet as a human, as a man that didn’t know his legacy. Imagine what the master could’ve been without his ego. He wanted to be the master of everything, but he never mastered himself.
Watching this scene over again makes you realize how amazing the sound design for this is. The unsettling "flight of the bumblebee" music fading in and out of the four drumbeats... even before the whispering, it's already got you on the edge of your seat.
***** I have to disagree with you there, if we were to rate all the versions of The Master (not including the Crater face versions between Delgado and Ainley) my list would go like this. 1. Roger Delgado, 2. Anthony Ainley, 3. John Simm, 4. Eric Roberts and 5. Michelle Gomez. Now the only reason Eric beats Michelle for me is that I don't feel she's had enough air time to really show what type of Master..... Sorry I mean Mistress, she really is, other than BANANAS!!!
XDEV I have to agree. John Simm was more The Joker than The Master. Delgado's Master wasn't crazy. He didn't seem to take particular joy in just simply murdering someone. Of course he didn't feel remorse either. If he killed you it was just necessary for his plan to succeed. I like to think of Gomez's Master as a bad joke. I haven't met one fan of the show personally who thought she was good. To be honest I thought that whole season was pretty weak overall. But I also think that if he played on that Jacobi would've been a good Master. He was in this episode.
The Valeyard shows the Doctor has evil in his heart.

@@benjaminodonnell258 Or given the events of The End Of Time, it may not be a good thing point blank. At this time of writing, the Time Lords were as bad as the Daleks by the end of the war.
"Oh my god! Morbius!"

The Master is hands down my favorite Doctor Who villain ever. Because he is probably the scariest and most threatening to me. Also the theme song itself is just has my heart going fast.
its really depressing he has become nothing more than a shell of his former self.
The Master has never been scary to me though (except for the decayed one.)

Robert Lythgoe Well admittedly I didn't know who did the music but he has done extremely well with it in this season and especially in this moment.

They probably heard 3:04 and gasped. I know I did at the age of 9, having seen some of the old Master's episodes
Joseph Simpson Really? I can remember being shocked as Hell when Martha turned the Watch over, and that was enough. He was another Time Lord, that was shocking enough.

Wow, I never thought of that!

3:20 Martha says "think what the Face of Bo said." She said it in front of Jack so he should realise she was talking about his future self because he was called that in his past.
Do you really think he would notice when all this craziness is going on
Raymond Johnson jack did look at her confused but he most likely thought not to bring it up as they were busy. After all it could’ve been a coincidence.
It's not like the universe is a huge place with amazing potential to run into the same nickname.
I think Jack noticed but brushed it off as a coincidence as soon as Martha said "dying words" since he can't actually die as far as he knows.
“Open me, you human fool. Open the light and summon me and receive my majesty”
Derek Jacobi makes an excellent villain and a perfect master. He needs more stories.
+Philipp Tapsell Yeah, I wish they'd used him for more than this.
But there is no logically way for him to come back. He exists as the master only in this episode for about five minutes. Unless it's earlier in Yana's life where the watch causes him to enter a state where the becomes the master but only for a limited time and after that he forgets it all. Hmm.
+Harry Robins exactly. The 10th Doctor became a human and forgot everything without regeneration or something. Theoretically, it would be possible.
I like the fact that they included an old master voice line as well as the recent ones as it adds to the flashback feel. 3:03

Oh okay. Yes, that's true.
Jacobi played the Master for something like 3 minutes and he was just perfect. I would have loved to see him instead of Simm

I absolutely love how this plot twist was handled, all that foreshadowing and buildup leading to The Doctor panicking and understanding The Face Of Boe’s last words about how he’s not alone…
From the music alone you can tell it's not going to be a friendly time lord.
Maryland Lovely What heads?

Really?
Orlando Soto Leyton I agree on that. Thumbs up if you want the Master to have his "tissue-compression" weapon back!
What if the version of the master before Simm was an older due to making himself human was the same as the movie one
Yeah, like dang. If John Simm's master is a ‘parody of himself’ like fans say, Eric Roberts is the interpretation of The Master to someone who's never watched the show.

An incredible cliffhanger, the last 14 minutes of this episode was perfection, that's how you bring a villain back in doctor who!
3:43 is him realising that time has come.
this is why I love Russell T Davies run on Doctor Who, he brought in amazing stage actors who express emotional scenes a lot more than TV actors
the way Derek Jacobi goes from an upset reminiscing scientist to a cold calculating villain in the space of a few seconds is epic
When Martha turns the watch over to reveal the gallifreyan writing and you hear the gong strike in the background, always gives me chills 😀
3:03 Are we hearing the Master's quotes from Classic Who?

It's one of the great tragedies of this series that we never got to see any interactions between the War Master and the War Doctor.

RTD writing here is off the bloodly chain in this episode!!! And of course all the actors are amazing in this episode ❤

*wasteful not hateful :P
I hear roger Delgado master, a dialogue from the story “daemons” when he’s telling azal to kill the doctor (3rd)
I love this scene because you can hear Anthony Ainley's Master's laughter. Nice little nod to his incarnation of a great character.
Rewatched Utopia recently and never appreciated how good the music is in this sequence. This scene has turned into one of my favourite character introductions as it was a brilliant way to bring back the Master... You got to feel for Professor Yana though...

***** I'm splitting my sides!
I remember watching this live as a kid. Such a surprise - one of the best scenes EVER!
Anyone else here in anticipation for Jacobi's Big Finish series
It's a real shame Jacobi never got a real episode as the Master to shine. For the short time he was the Master he was great
omegafan101 at least Big Finish have him his own spinoff
