And the thing you gotta think about: AI can only replicate things, styles, objects, whatever it can learn from. It isn't creative, it can't think of something original by itself. So if every artist switched over to AI, there was no new original content AI could use for learning. Everything created by AI would just be based off of stuff, that has already been used by other AI projects before, at some point, AI possibly trying to learn from AI products. While I am not sure, how big of a meaning this would have at some point for the final audience, it certainly has a meaning for artists. I am an artist in the process of launching a large scale animated show, and I take pride in, that no kind of AI was touched for this project. And it will be mentioned in every episode. AI is a tool that can help with many processes. It is great for automating boring and tedious processes, to get away the undesired stuff from us. But the creative creations from artists are nothing, that we want to get rid of, so those must not be replaced by AI. If I knew a show would be created largely by AI, I would not care to watch, because basically any weird stuff can come of it.
Idea - IDK if this is applicable to cinema 4d, but in Blender there's something called "Projection mapping" where you could take an image and project it onto your model, much like an overhead projector. Something that might be worth looking into is seeing if Cinema 4d has a similar function, because if it does you could paint over a background in PS as shown, then project that image and others onto the geometry in cinema 4d. Then you wouldn't need to re-paint every single background, and could allow for more dynamic camera moves too.
Im cinema 4d user. And i think im agree with you. Cinema 4d better for mograph. Beside that, i think blender can handle it. Maybe he already put time and effort in cinema 4d, and hard to move to blender
Oh you are probably ahead of many ppl at this point, trust me. I know ppl who say want to be animators and only ever made 3 simple loop scenes that don't even last 1 sec each of them... lol. So, be proud!

@@John-dd8kh Most frame-by-frame animation like this made for tv-shows or movies either saves cost by making the artstyle and design simpler or by using less keyframes. Typical western animation (cartoons) use simple designs with many keyframes, anime tends to use complicated designs with less keyframes. Anime also changes the number of keyframes used more often. They genaly use less keyframes for dialogue and more for action scenes. There are of course exceptions.

geez, tv paint seems so PRIMITIVE. the way that it has to process every little thing to each frame explicitly. nowadays, there are probably at least a half dozen programs that can do that kind of thing better and faster. AND YET, i think it's really great that you're continuing on and working as you do. at the end of the day, you're getting stuff done with a tool that you're familiar with instead of constantly being on a tool upgrade treadmill which is the pitfall i always fall into. imo, even if you're doing your stuff with sticks in the dirt, to actually do the work in a way that you find enjoyable is more important than anything else. so kudos and keep on truckin'.
Agreed, in the end it doesn't matter which tools you use, as long as you're not held back by them. For those wanting to try this technique themselves however, I'd recommend Blender. Then you can do the whole process in the same program :).

Especially when everything starts to feel homogenized. That is the nature of AI, it homogenizes everything to the point that people ask for something new, which it can not do since it learns based on the past and doesnt know how to "think" for itself. It is SO far from that, I doubt we will have that even in 10 years. You cant tell an AI "how" to think about making new ideas on it's own, you can only instruct it yourself to remix what it scans to fit a description. This is NOT how humans work! AI really cant replace the arts, because it can only ever reproduce what humans have already made. Although AI could easily replace hundreds of other jobs like librarians, manual laborers, and anyone in the basic sciences, it never truly can "replace" something that doesnt really exist and can never be perfect, like art.

sometimes people are a little harsh on animators because an individual frame doesn't look as impressive as a detailed still image, but honestly the work into getting so consistent with drawing the same characters over and over, and the final product are worth it for their beauty. and not to mention, the added strength of the video medium with motion, and sound, it's often underappreciated work, but it's always worth the effort.
I'm about to start my first serious endeavour into 2d animation after being inspired by Legend Of The Galactic Heroes and remembered that I was watching your streams every now and then and wanted to get a refresh on how you work. And there is now this video right here, uploaded 2 weeks ago. Perfect timing as if the universe was telling me go do it! Thanks for the amazing insight in your workflow!

People gushing about this in comment, especially ones bemoaning their own art... i think alot of them are missing the point. There is no trick here, there is a technique that he's applied to good fundamentals in animation and art and anatomy, and hard friggin work. If the foundation wasn't strong, then it wouldn't hold all the supplemental 3d rendering he's showing to you. Put in the work, build your basics up, learn your art and craft, whatever it is. I mean, just look at the inspiration shots @15:00, he's not copying the art work, he's copying the general technique. And you couldn't do that if your basics aren't sound; you wouldn't understand the methodology/aesthetic you want to draw from. I respect that Otaking is sharing this, but now that i see his workflow i respect "artist/animator Otaking" even more.
It's such a jem, not just to see the finished product, but also your work, under construction. Well. I guess we'll all just have to wait....faster, till you show us more, and eventually the finished result. I'm really at awe, that some animation company hasn't said " were in!" yet, of sorts. Love to see your own ideas (sketches, designs and such) going into it.
The quality of your animations are top tier for being a one man show, and I believe that you have the skills to not show some of the weak spots in them, but just would have to spend immense amounts of time on them. In other words, the flaws your animations have I believe are time based, not skill based. You're real good.

I use this method for objects a lot in sequential illustrations. It is kinda a pain to model if you are mainly 2D artist but it saves a lot of time and increases detail quality.
your animations are absolutely breathtaking, the final product is so polished and detailed it looks like it was a 3d render which shows an insane level of skill in terms of inbetweening and patience, and dont get me started on how natural/organic it all feels, she really seems alive! i can only hope to reach the level of deftness and determination your animations require, and i hope to see more of your content!
23:14 for some bits like shadow warping, if compositing this in nuke you could use a grid warp to bend it and achieve the effect. (dont know the after effects version)
Man, like others have been saying, the amount of effort you put into this is insane. Having to more or less redraw and recolor for every frame. Makes me more forgiving whenever I see errors in animations like this, It takes a lot of patience and focus to do these things.
i dont know why but i much more intrested in old 90s anime/animations then plane CGi. full CGI films somtimes just looks solid and soulles to me sometimes, i never really notice the artist work when everthing just looks the same.

It's a pleasure to watch your whole process. ngl though I couldn't ignore how when she brings her arm up to put her visor down, the lighting on the arm doesn't change, if the light is on the right side of her body it was kinda weird seeing the light not change on the arm. unless there is a different light source for her arm and it follows it as it moves

You could also paint the 3D objects in the scene and duplicate them around as needed. Then youd only have to make small readjustments in PS after rendering then. Also for the helmet, you can put a white placeholder for the face INSIDE the helmet, then you dont see the details in the back and can just render it out like that.
17:54 I discovered a bit of gaussian blur (I'm learning a lot from you btw!) and fade on a duplicate of the merged layer gives a nice little rounded effect.
