Agreed. We had a 2021 Leaf before my grandpa got his blue EV6, and Nissan’s ProPilot assist sucks. Non-blue cruise ford also is not good. We were quite impressed with blue cruise on a rental Mach-E though.
Got my Ioniq 6 SEL AWD in March and it’s been a great vehicle. Fast (free) charging every 3-4 days. Great speed. I love the style. Get compliments all the time. Drives amazing
I bought this exact model and trim (and color) used this summer and road tripped it with it from San Francisco to Wisconsin right through the Rockies, and I did experience all these same issues. I did buy this exact trim level for maximum efficiency and range, which was very helpful on a road trip with long distance separation between charging stops. Other drivers seemed to be digging deeper into the battery charge to get to the same places, which meant they were taking longer per charge and didn't have the option of just skipping a station that had glitchy chargers. I found that if I turned on speed control, lane assist would turn on automatically and generally start ping-ponging, so I developed the habit of disabling it immediately. Eventually the car seemed to be responding to this by letting me enable each independently. I am glad in either case that they're independently controllable with steering wheel buttons. I'm also glad that the speed control has a lot of settings and some machine learning (I can't stomach calling it "AI") to adjust responsiveness to how you use it. I did find that the proximity sensors for nearby/passing cars was more active and responsive than in your video for some reason. In any case, I didn't have a problem with those. Anyway, thank you for this video thoroughly breaking down how this system works, and its good and bad points. I won't trade my car until something more efficient comes along, and I will not engage with Tesla both because of their systems design and because of the annoying leadership factor. And I own voting shares in that company!
I love watching the hogback videos. I don't live in Colorado, but I've driven the hogback since i70 was built. It's a great test road. Really scary in the winter!

When i imagine the time i began to drive, in the most cars there was nothing to protect you except of a seat belt. No ABS, no EPS, no Airbag, no traction control. If you were distracted or you were close to loose control of the car, nothing could help you. So you better learned to drive and be attentive. It is impressive what happend since these days. Thank you for testing all this new tech.
I watched the places where HDA released. The Hyundai system requires good lane markings on both sides of the car. If you would have been in the center lane, at least a couple of releases would not have happened. After a few thousand miles, you can anticipate when its going to have a problem. Love my Ioniq 5 for road trips.
I had the pleasure of driving this car ~2000mi back to Colorado from Boston, and I was reasonably impressed with the driver's assistance overall. Also, this happened to be my first ever CCS roadtrip (done lots of Supercharging and CHAdeMO in the past). I did definitely experience the steering oscillation a number of times, and had a few disengagements in some situations (like going into construction zones with really weird lane jogs). Coming from the perspective of dailying an AP1 equipped Model S, the only thing I did missed as a feature was auto lane changes (though the way this system works for that is better than basic AP on the newer Teslas). Overall, I'd say it was pretty good, but not quite as good as the AP1 on my old Model S.
I have a 2019 model 3 and autopilot is so good now, and I subscribe to FSD, it’s unbeatable. They could be parked in that lot for hogback and it will do the entire drive All the others only work on the major roads after you get there
10:11 I wish it did, but the EV6 Wind w/Tech Package does not have HDA 2. Quite a few reviewers have said it does, but it doesn’t. The tech package adds a 360 cam, turn signal cameras, remote smark park assist, and rear cross traffic assist. You have to upgrade to the GT-Line to get HDA 2. Source: We have three EV6s in the household, a Wind, GT-Line, and GT.
@@MrCg006 Lol agree. Hyundai gets away with murder for a lot of stuff. I noticed they have poor crash test scores (IIHS showed some manipulated results by Hyundai) and the build quality was atrocious when I drove the Avis Rental
I personally know two people that have fallen asleep at the wheel and we’re in terrible, life altering accidents as a result. A cruise control maintaining full speed while disengaging the steering wheel seems like the worst of all worlds. At least if you fall asleep, there’s a chance that your foot might ease off the pedal. This car is really bad.
Hyundai/Kia is anti American, they sold 9.2 million defective cars that 12 y/os easily steal and commit crimes in. Dozens of avoidable deaths and 10,000’s of victims. They still won’t fix them.
Tips: don't fall asleep, if you're tired go to the nearest gas station and take a rest. Never, ever, 100% relying on driver assistant no matter how good they are.
Never had any issues with ev6 hda1 in a bit over 2 years. It's been as good as in this test since I got it. Maybe early 2022 had issues or Hyundai specifically. The never shutting off cruise is a problem though. Also had a stretch of 20 mins once where it didn't ask for any input. It's very inconsistent on that
This kind of review is so helpful (and provides prospective purchasers / lessors of new vehicles with information found nowhere else). Thank you. I would certainly like to see your assessment of the Lucid Air (preferable the Pure, but any of them, really). BTW, your findings WRT Hyundai/Kia/Genesis vehicles (the common failures shared by all) is indeed quit alarming.
I had the weirdest experience on my IONIQ6 SEL a few weeks ago between Las Vegas and Primm, NV. It wouldn't auto lane change on the 15 pretty close to the city. Obviously Vegas is allergic to road markings being painted, and i think thats what tripped out my HDA 2. Tried it the whole way to California with varying results, once in the Golden State it had no issues. I'll usually take the wheel for road conditions like the hogback. But once Kyle mentioned on some other video recently about lane centering giving up I've noticed it more often. The incapacitated test I think was hurt because it wasn't tried on a freeway. (Not that im suggesting you try it). But the mapping and other options are better on a freeway instead of a b road. I agree going off mapping is a cop out.
I really love these driver assistance videos even though I would probably never use them because when I'm driving the car I want to drive the car but still very good information to know keep up the great work y'all have a good one and I'll catch you on the next one.
Great test, guys, thanks for doing these! Hyundai/Kia really need to get their software situation sorted out. Every single car in their entire lineup needs OTA capability and they need to push improvements to the whole fleet, not just put it in new cars. There's no excuse in 2024 to require me to come to the dealer to update my software, and even then I'm just getting a few minor bug fixes rather than bumping me up to the latest.
I'm currently leasing an Ioniq 6 SE. Overall, for a cheap daily ($220/ month $0 down) it is a fantastic car. I have found that for assisted driving turning off lane keep assist and just running HDA improves the performance massively.
Great episode lads, I have a GV60 and complimented it with a aftermarket device called Comma 3X which transformed the driver’s assist features on the car, I did over 120klm with out any intervention, really does turn a road trip into a chill drive.
Great to see how much better it is these days.. and watched the rest of the video... :D My parents have a Kona (hybrid) and it performs well on highways here in Finland. My Tesla does ding when a car in front of you starts going from traffic lights etc. And also dings for green light.
This makes me glad I have a car with HDA 2. Though Hyundai's own info says this system will turn off too if you never put your hands on the wheel. But lane keeping can keep me in the lane even when the lines are barely visible.
Thanks for the great test, but I have a fundamental problem: 50:35 You have level 3 self driving expectations on an level 2 system! It is an assistance system, not autonomous driving. When you drive this car day by day you know exactly what it can to and what not. You know on which corner you have to be aware that the lane keeping could be go of. This control to be prepared happens unaware and is totaly fine, because the lane keeping comes in the same unagitated back. Why should it bugging me with alerts and everything going red? Please not! This is annoying for drivers and passengers. Thats the reason why most of the tesla driver (that i know) don't use the autopilot with passengers, special sleeping once, in roads like this. With the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis HDA systems, no Problem. Just my thought from 60k mile experience as HDA-2 driver.
Here's to hoping they fix the warning only sometimes going on and the behavior when the ADAS goes off like they fixed the brake light issue. The ADAS system shutting off without warning happens multiple times to me and almost feel recall worthy since I'll suddenly have to yank the wheel to not crash...
Adaptive cruise, emergency braking/pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alerts are helpful. I don’t find keeping the vehicle in the lane difficult and prefer to do that myself. Maybe as a backup but I don’t ever rely on it.
To be fair this isn't Hyundai's latest system. The Santa Cruz and Tucson feature the emergency stop while keeping LFA engaged. The Santa Fe might as well but they don't list it like the other two products. I believe this new tech will be tied to SCC 2 rather than HDA 1/2.
Ok, so my UK spec Ultimate has hda2 but I've only found it falls apart if the tight corner is really bumpy. The lighting makes a huge difference to the interior.
Here is some real world driver assistance tidbit for Kyle & Jordan. The '06' driver assistance is VERY similar to the system in this writers 2019! Kia Niro. It has all the same weird tricks and 'what just happened' moments.
The I6 did better than I expected. Easily matching or besting my Tesla M3 basic AP from the look of it. I had AP crap out/phantom brake on me 5 or 6 times today just on my weekly shopping and errands run. Hyundai needs to level up how this car is equipped. They should know by now people want the LR efficient version, but they want the car equipped with features they want. They should offer that car loaded RWD with an aero wheels option. The downside of that I6 from my perspective is it isn't nearly as efficient at the M3, truck space suffers and no frunk. I really want to like the I6 and with the design compromises for efficiency I expected it to be very efficient. But it really isn't. The eGMP charges great. I too prefer the look of the I5, but efficiency and range really suffer in that car. It may charge like a boss, but they really need to figure out this efficiency and range thing. 84kwh battery coming for 2025. We don't yet know if they figured out how to make the eGMP cars charge correctly on the Tesla SC. Looking forward to how this car stacked up in the I-90 surge.
You mentioned this car doesn't support "phone as a key", but I have added Hyundai's "digital key" to my Apple Wallet and can use it to unlock my Ioniq 6 and start the vehicle. Are you referring to something different? I'm about 2 months into my Ioniq 6 lease and absolutely love it. Leasing an Ioniq 5 was cheaper, but I actually prefer the seating position of a sedan, and I preferred the handling of the Ioniq 6 over the 5. My biggest complaints? The dashboard is a little too reflective, so you get a lot of glare on the windshield when its very sunny out. And the non-Bose audio system in non-Limited trims is pretty, pretty bad. That said, the latest firmware update for the infotainment improved the scaling of the volume slider (so you don't have to have it cranked to 75%+ to get decent volume out of it), and if you play with the equalizer, you can make the sound tolerable (Treble +3, Mid 0, Bass +1 for my tastes).
@@vvvvwwvvvv8843 They’re just speaking to SE trim, and in turn, making it sound like the whole lineup is the same. But, digital key, HDA 2 should be on the lower trim. Maybe with the ‘26 refresh.
I used to own a RWD Ioniq 6 which I loved for its beautiful lines and sporty handling but I traded it in towards a 2024 model 3 LR AWD. There was nothing wrong with the Ioniq 6 but we are moving and found that AWD would be useful in the new area. I have owned a polestar 2 prior to the Ioniq and I feel really the only challenger to the model 3 is the I6. The m3 is just such a better value at all trim levels. The model 3 has more range, performance, better sound system, tech integration and yes better interior materials. I even found the model 3 softer on the road. Hyundai wins in charging speed, looks, handling, and fit/finish. In order for Hyundai to improve their offering they need to fix things like having to always re-engage one pedal driving when you start the vehicle, no auto lock, needing drive modes and a better sound system especially in the lower trims.
I just wonder how the ID.4 would do. It has great driver assist. In my view. Far better than the 2020 M3 autopilot which I used to own. But it seems like you never tested it.
This is so funny to me. I recently stopped driving a 17 year old base model manual Mazda. the ONLY safety features it had were airbags and anti-lock brakes. my Kona SEL safety features and its auto pilot completely blow me away.
You guys need an "ADAS Under Review" cling sticker to warn those behind. Would you dare test ADAS on The Million Dollar Highway? Possibly as a challenge for the ones who do real well on the Hogback.
I have heard that in Europe there are limits on adas applied steering torque. Meaning the car can't turn as sharp as you would like, even to the point it can't make the corner. I wonder if European cars like eqs are effected by that even in the US.
With the new 32.X update for Tesla, the base autopilot got a lot better, it has similar torque to this car, I think. Just put one finger on the wheel and it drives without nagging. At least in Europe, very likely also in the US.
As a former Kia technician, I hate the Kia lane centering. I didn’t drive too many EV6 and EV9 but in the ICE and Hybrid vehicles it felt like you were playing ping pong down the road. Not a fan at all.
sometimes when you talk about pre-mapped... you make it sound like the car has the highway information pre-programmed as like gps etc lane locations.... but I know at least the ford.. this isn't the case... it purely is authorized or not authorized... keeping hands-free to controlled access highway/freeways, where it should be. Granted I dislike that Ford would deauthorize every interstate-to-interstate like connection.. i know why... because of higher risk... but still.. I used to travel up and down freeways in miami every single day for almost a year, and every weekend they changed the lanes for the continued construction, and my mach-e always handled it just fine... its not like ford was running a pilot car through to measure the changes or anything. Same on my trips from Miami to CIncinnati and when i moved to Minnesota.. plenty of interstates that were under construction... didn't have a single problem with random new lane shifts, or running down temporary lanes on the shoulder etc..
Real consumer advice: for an extra $1,500 this car would be the best ever tested on hogback. This needs to be stressed for compatible cars, there is no more important fact for someone buying a car based of ADAS.
I don’t like the doors. Why they seperate from the window line? Idk aesthetically it bugs me. I expect that on a 3 row suv or cheap $13k car like an Aveo, not this
Early in the video, you guys mentioned how variable a system can be car to car. What if it's also run to rum? Why not do three runs, show the best, but note score variances for each car?
Jump to 13:20 for the Driver Unresponsive chapter, which was supposed to be inserted at 11:10, sorry about that glitch!
Both Mike and Lacey told me on the trip how impressed they were with the lane centering versus Ford and Nissan’s systems on their cars

If you come to Toronto (Canada), please drive our highway called “DVP” which is the equivalent of the hwy in this video, a testing must
The DVP is nowhere near as complex as I70 in that area IMO except that the drivers are much worse 😅
Thanks!
I have heard that in Europe there are limits on adas applied steering torque. Meaning the car can't turn as sharp as you would like, even to the point it can't make the corner. I wonder if European cars like eqs are effected by that even in the US.
Hey OOS, can you test HDA1 vs HDA2 on the Hogback? I’ve had both and don’t really see where HDA2 uses machine learning to scooch.
With the new 32.X update for Tesla, the base autopilot got a lot better, it has similar torque to this car, I think. Just put one finger on the wheel and it drives without nagging. At least in Europe, very likely also in the US.
Would be interesting to see a spread sheet that has all the cars you have tested
Update upgrades an all changes should be reviewed
Its the bank angle causing the issues on the return.
Retro Vintage Screens like the shape: CItroen, Saab or Porsche 911 vibes.
I almost bought digital green color but bought Ultimate Red.
As a former Kia technician, I hate the Kia lane centering. I didn’t drive too many EV6 and EV9 but in the ICE and Hybrid vehicles it felt like you were playing ping pong down the road. Not a fan at all.
People that dont drive base cars often. Black interior is usually the standard.
Dumping my tesla MY getting this ioniq 6
Test an Ioniq 6 Limited. Let's see what fully loaded gets you.
If it's failing corners at 55 at times, I couldn't imagine how bad it would be at 70+ on this road.
What's with the cars blinkers in the intro?
We are going to get an HDA II version right?
Also the Comma c3(x)?
Also very light torque: I think no car before the Ioniq 5 *facelift* have HOD, not even the 5N before that.
when will part 2 of race wil be uploaded..?
A week from yesterday
lucid adas test when? 👀
tesla hw4 fsd test?
The auto breaking failed in my kona ev and I got hurt 😢
sometimes when you talk about pre-mapped... you make it sound like the car has the highway information pre-programmed as like gps etc lane locations.... but I know at least the ford.. this isn't the case... it purely is authorized or not authorized... keeping hands-free to controlled access highway/freeways, where it should be.
Im gonna simulate if i ....died..... lmao
Real consumer advice: for an extra $1,500 this car would be the best ever tested on hogback. This needs to be stressed for compatible cars, there is no more important fact for someone buying a car based of ADAS.
Though it was the race and I instant click on it
Neah this Driver Assistance is crap. Tesla Standard Autopilot can handle lane keep and distance like a champ. Curves, no problem at all..
I don’t like the doors. Why they seperate from the window line? Idk aesthetically it bugs me. I expect that on a 3 row suv or cheap $13k car like an Aveo, not this
Couldn't you just read the manual to find out whether the streering wheel requires you to touch it?
Such a shame you can't drive the MG4 in the the US, MG Pilot is like this, engage, disengage, engage all without warning.
👍
I have an ioniq 6 limited. Mine shows surrendering vehicle.
Early in the video, you guys mentioned how variable a system can be car to car. What if it's also run to rum? Why not do three runs, show the best, but note score variances for each car?
Looks like a broken windshield?
As long as it does automatic cruise, that's all I care about. I don't trust any of these, and keep any auto steering off.
everything that autopilot can do long time ago
i like hte first 4/5ths of the ioniq 6, but that rear 5th is just oooft
The back looks like a giant sat on it before the body had set
You can buy a used EQS price range 39,000 50,000 which is the price of a new ionic 6 are the cheaper EVs worth it 🤔
eff that adas, jesus.
Perhaps drivers who need, and become reliant on assistance provided by the vehicle should, before anything else, learn how to drive. 🙄😖🤨
Man... that rear half is soooooo fugly.
This thing is hideous. Yikes
