    How is an older woman still taking charge of her life, career, and sexuality "sad"? She refused to stay in the "has-been-actress-now-marred-by-age" box. She's acting her age. Her way. It's not sad. It's badass.

    You can tell it’s obviously a comedy and that her being as old as she is is part of the humor and absurdity. It’s just like any Mel Brooks movie. Good for her for keeping her sense of humor. Elizabeth Taylor sure enjoyed an active romantic life well into her old age!

    • @jamesmorris5547
      @jamesmorris5547 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The line was from her 1926 play, "Sex". In it, she played Margie Lamont, a waterfront prostitute. In one scene, a uniformed police officer embraces her, and she asks, "Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are ya just glad to see me?" At the time, it was almost considered obscene to title a play, "Sex". She wrote it under a pen name, Jane Mast. Eventually, the play was raided by the police for obscenity (!) and she was sentenced to ten days in jail. It turned out to be great publicity and ticket sales skyrocketed upon her release.
      Contrary to popular belief, the movie Sextette was not based on her play Sex. Sextette was a comedy she wrote and starred in on stage in 1960-62. It was never on Broadway, she just toured with it around the country - she was then in her late 60's!

      @@jamesmorris5547 Talk about being ahead of her time - I believe after her stint in the slammer for doing “Sex” on Broadway - and before she became a sensation in her first Hollywood film Night After Night - she wrote and starred in another Broadway show The Drag about drag queens! She was also very spiritual and held regular Friday night seances in her apartment in The Ravenswood building in Hollywood.

    Just to add that Mae West (born 17 August 1893) was 83 and not 87 when she made that movie. Production started in late 1976 and ended in the early part of 1977. As a teenage boy at that time I collected all the news items in the movie mags of the day, who were amazed at Mae doing a new movie. Yes it took a while to get the film into release. While not of massive importance, I would have expected a PBS documentary to get the age of Mae West right. Yes the movie would have been better if done in the mid or late sixties as the first plans came up, but great to have this Sextette then no Sextette at all. Besides it's flaws I love this movie.

    I remember when I first saw her, in "I'm no Angel", I couldn't believe my eyes, bc I thought she wasn't sexy at all, even then. But after a few moments, that doesn't even matter. She's just great. Funny, smart and a natural Equalist (that's feminism including all genders, it also includes all races): any female character in her movies is treated as a person, no matter what color their skin as well.
    I'm a fan for decades now, and I still think that Cary Grant looked at her with badly hidden distaste in the two movies they did together, but she just does not care. She was a sex goddess without ever looking like mainstream-sexy.
    And she started in the movie business way after she crossed the magic age-border for females! She was 39 when she first appeared on screen, 40 when she became a leading lady. Plus she wrote her own scripts, fought her own fight with the censors, and had loads of fun with many men.
    What a woman!

      Cary Grant adored her. He said he learned everything he knew about comic timing from her, which is not surprising -- her comic timing was flawless. She did not gibe him his start; he'd made a few movies before he did She Done Him Wrong with her in 1933. Notably, he played opposite Marlene Dietrich in 1932 in Blonde Venus. But Cary Grant loved and respected Mae West so much that he never corrected her when she claimed to have discovered him.

    • @Weirdkauz
      @Weirdkauz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@francesca7142 She did not direct her films, she wrote the scripts. She obviously had a lot of pull on set, but she also had good directors working with her.
      She did give Grant his start, he was just her type. What I am saying is my personal impression that Grant did not find her sexy in the least, and he was so bad an actor that he could not hide it. Totally overrated the man. Plus, West never had an affair with him, which is saying a lot for a tall dark and handsome in her immediate vicinity.
      My sources are my own eyes on movies I have both seen several times, Emily Wortis Leider's Biography "Mae West - I'm no Angel", as well as Mae West's autobiography "Goodness had nothing to do with it".
