Wood Turning a Spalted Log into a Vase

  • This was my first time woodturning a log with spalting. The wood ended up being super punky on the inside, but it was still a fun lathe project. I intended to make this a bowl, but once I saw the spalting I wanted to keep as much of it as possible, so that's why this is sort of in between a bowl and a vase. It's really a blase...or a vowl...or something....

    Nice work, the spalting shows off the character of the wood. Cheers, John

    You are so very talented to be able to turn a piece of wood into a beautiful vase or bowl.

    Nice outcome. One trick to try when boring with a Forstner bit is to frequently back it out to clear the chips while holding onto the chuck to keep it from pulling out of the Morse taper. When the bit jams it can destroy a piece and possibly injure you. Don't ask me how I know.

    I like it. I like the shape and the patterns in the wood. They complement each other. I even like the plug. Thank you for sharing and see you soon.

      Thank you! I was a little disappointed in the color of the plug, but there’s no denying the log was beautiful

    That came out pretty good. Given how you named it ... was it a blase or a vowl or what ? At least we know it's not a blouse or vowel huh? Keep up the good work fella👍 Thanks for the sharing🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷

    Really nice, had to look up what sparked means. New to this, can I ask why you used an orbital sander first.

    • @CookWoodworks
      @CookWoodworks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was actually the first time I used the orbital sander. The wood was really pinky and hard to get smooth, so I brought out the big guns for sanding haha

    I see you left the pith in. Did this one survive as it dried? Or did it tear itself apart? I've had bad luck turning this way.

    It’s a great shape and the wood is intriguing but why white? Take care and stay safe.

    should have added some color to the epoxy, gold, brown, grey or black. the white distracts from the natural beauty of the vase.

    I loved the turning and the spalting made the grain stand out beautifully. I would have preferred you had left a hole rather than what looks like you plugged it with chewing gum. Shame.
