As a long time FSX hobbyist, I can say that this video is invaluable to me! I had to stop flying FSX back in late 2018 and finally have found my opportunity to buy FS 2020 and begin the setup process. I had accumulated a few thousand dollars, (quite a few), in add-ons for FSX over the 9 years I flew it.
As I added new mesh, scenery, landscape, etc., etc., I realized very quickly that a store-bought computer wasn't going to do the job. So over the years, I learned an ever increasing amount of info and techniques that I needed to build my computers from the ground up. If I could upgrade the hardware, I would, but when the motherboard would no longer accommodate the latest CPU & GPU releases, it was back to another 'ground-up build'.
Time and repetition added to my experience and eventually, I got pretty good at it. My most recent build was a few months ago and my most recent hardware upgrades were done about 2 weeks ago. I upgraded my CPU, (which is now an i9-11900K), and my GPU, (which is now an RTX 3080Ti). I knew I would be facing some 'system taxing software' when I installed FS 2020 and your video/s are exactly what I went searching for before I did little more than installing and updating the new FS 2020 that I purchased last week.
I'll be searching for your other videos because you certainly have offered some great tips! At this time, all I know for sure is that I have the latest version of FS 2020 Premium installed and updated. I don't know if that's "Update 9" but if you posted this video in April 2022, then my guess is that I may now have the FS 2020 "Update 10", (being that it's been about 5 months).
I'll need to find out where to go to confirm the FS 2020 Update version presently installed. That shouldn't be too hard to do. Regardless, thanks again for the great help and detailed explanations.
    Rich

For me, turning ON Threaded Optimization in the Nvidia control panel actually gave me better performance. Using the Fenix A320 with it off, I would get some very tiny occasional stutters. But with it on, it’s butter smooth. And I can confirm that’s it’s constantly running smooth as the fps counter shows green bar all the time with no red spikes. Never have I seen this sim being constantly smooth. I’m running a 12900k with 3080 Ti and 32GB DDR5

What other tweaks have you done to get it smooth? Like I got it smoothed out in less denser areas, then as an example using a Cessna 172 g1000 flying into ksea it turns to a mess because of the airport being so dense in detailed everything on ground.. using 200/200 object detail and lod

What I’ve experienced since SU9 is that framerate will get worse the longer you fly.
Tested it twice with a 3h flight with the 320 Neo and a 3h flight with Concorde. Started with mid 40 fps and ended with a slideshow the closer I got to the airport. I even had a crash to desktop during my approach with Concorde cause the fps dropped to like 2.
Seems that many users are experiencing this.

    • @Q8Pilot

Yes many have reported degradation in preformance after sim update 9. The recent patches seem to have addressed most of the CTDs, but FPS remains an issue for many.

I did extensive testing with these two setting on multiple, extremely repeatable discovery flights and my results were super consistent. Turning Game Mode and Hags OFF gave me a performance DROP, while turning them ON gave me a performance BOOST of around 4-5 frames.

I feel like I see lots of TH-camrs recommending turning Game Mode off without actually understanding what it does. In old versions of Windows, it had some bugs with performance prioritization that could cause issues on some setups. But on newer versions it pretty much exclusively exists to silence Windows notifications and halt updates while a game is running. There’s really no reason to turn it off besides inconveniencing yourself.

    • @Q8Pilot

It does not matter what Microsoft tells you. Testing things out is the ultimate proof of what works and what dorsal. Game Mode causes issues for sure. This is recommended after testing for many hours. My 2 cents.

    Enable Game Mode
How do you expect to get good frames in a Microsoft Game, when you are not using their features that are meant to benefit you in games like these. I’m talking about Game Mode, which is a built-in feature within Windows 10. The purpose of Game Mode is to ensure that the game is using 100% of CPU, and no other applications are interfering in the process. Those NCP settings iare unfortunately not really helping me. I have a Gsync compatible LG 27GL83A, and If I turn OFF Vsync in both NCP and in game, its not very smooth when panning in cockpit (or external for that matter). As soon as i set MSFS Vsync ON and to 30 or 60, things gets smooth again. When setting a max framerate, lets say 36 - things are still not smooth at all. When turning off Max framerate in NCP, its a bit better - but not near as smooth as with Vsync ON (its a kind of adaptive Vsync in game) in the game. I just wish there was a 40fps setting in game. BUT if the FPS dips below 60 I guess my Gsync compatible monitor takes care of that, right? Cant really decide what to use here...

@@Q8Pilot when using g-sync only... It's not really very smooth. When using vsync in game everything is kind of smooth. From what i have understood g sync should do the job by itself. Not sure why this doesn't seem to work. I am back to vsync in game and 30 FPS. Vsync off in ncp. Does g sync compatible monitors have problems around 30-40 FPS? Thanks for good guide... I am using the other settings i recommended in ncp. ✨👍

There is also another element: deleting 3d cities from the World Updates (their photogrammy). For some reason, some of these 3d cities/models conflict with one another causing FPS loss for some of us. I deleted all 3d cities a part from the US (since this is where I mainly fly). There is a bug but not for all of us. The other part is not properly loading your GPU enough which is a different story. As usual, your advice did help me some and I appreciate that. I have an 8086k 5ghz, 2080ti, 32gb ram and TLOD still brings your CPU down regardless of power. The GPU is hardly effected for me. I also have over 200gb of freeware scenery, most of all ORBX and Contrails scenery payware and using this in the Cessna 414, CRJ or DC-6 at KJFK to get these results. Also AIG traffic at 70% and offline traffic at 20%. Going to the Teteboro payware airport I get even better FPS at 30, no vysnc. I have a gsync 4k monitor so that does help reduce fps loss. TLOD is 150 like you suggested as turning it down to 100 does some for performance but I bumped down a few of your settings. LOD was increased from 100 to 200 as it had little changes to FPS. I lied, your advice helped a lot!

Thank you for your helpful review , I did all tryouts like you explained in this video a lot of times previously and your video is 100% correct & confirmed my doubts, now correct me if I am wrong , it seems that whenever a world update for a specific region is released there will be a low FPS around the airport even if you have a high end g.card , but as soon as you take off things will normalize to normal FPS , the only update I found that didnt affect the airport scenery a lot was Australia update with A32NX it has very smooth scenery , but Europe airports were really affected with the updates . though it has beautiful scenery from above . Anyway just thought of sharing my experience thanks again for the extra tips you gave us and your time you spent for it , great videos as always my friend & all the best . BR

I hope people at least try this and possibly see how much flight fidelity they could be missing.
Many simply stare at the FPS counter and go UP on the settings until the counter starts to fall off.
Get your fav plane and do some touch and goes. Notice that over the fence and critical flare to touch how it feels, not the FPS.
Now cut all the graphics to low. Now do it. I can tell by the way the air feels. With zero deadzones, stick sensitivity high the aircraft feels dynamic and not lethargic. Now decide if you really need window frames, roof tiles and trees 20 miles away.

Great information 👍 i now know that nothing is wrong with my hardware 😂 Since MSFS 2020 is a fairly modern game I expect it to easily match the frame rate of my monitor (144HZ) which of course it didn’t. Now i now it is due to the game itself. I get 35-50 frames with everything set on ultra and a renderscale of 200. This with the rtx 3090 and amd ryzen 9 5950x cpu. With these tips i can at least drop the load on the cpu and tranfer it more to the gpu utilization, which is great 👍
