hi, nicely done video, have you noticed how the CPU and GPU are being used to about 33% of their full capacity?? do you know how to improve this?? I wanted to ask which tool you're using to show FPS and all the other stats, it looks very nice, do you know if it works in VR??
The tool I use is FPSMonitor. Link in the description. I noticed the low utilization. It has improved after the couple of fixes from Asobo. But it should be much better.
Thanks for the great content and settings recommendations. I recently upgraded GPU/CPU and still notice some shimmering/flickering on airport scenery (is this what I see refered to as aliasing?). Also I notice strange 'ghost' like shadows at night on runway and taxis. The shadows during the day my plane make, look horrible with a lot of blocking. Any thoughts on these issues? 1080p (3080ti/5900x/16gb ram)
Thank you very much, Captain Q8! I learn so much from you! May I ask which OS you use? Upon typing "hardware acceleration" a browser page opens, which leads me to nowhere... I use WIN 10 Pro 64-bit (regularly updated), I9-10900, AMD RX6900 XT

Mega video thanks to you. I set it the way you described. Super constant fps . What I would never have thought is that it is worth it with Nvidia vsync and in msfs vsync to turn off...really good
I feel like I see lots of TH-camrs recommending turning Game Mode off without actually understanding what it does. In old versions of Windows, it had some bugs with performance prioritization that could cause issues on some setups. But on newer versions it pretty much exclusively exists to silence Windows notifications and halt updates while a game is running. There’s really no reason to turn it off besides inconveniencing yourself.
It does not matter what Microsoft tells you. Testing things out is the ultimate proof of what works and what dorsal. Game Mode causes issues for sure. This is recommended after testing for many hours. My 2 cents.
To clarify, do you just settle with the 20ish frames while on the ground? I always assumed this was avoidable, but if it's not then I'll stop worrying so much when my max ground frames hover around 20-25.
Unfortunately this can't be avoided with high settings. You can really tone down your settings until you achieve a reasonable FPS, but it will most certainly be at the expense of visual quality.
@@Q8Pilot I don't mind visual quality drops as long as I get a stable 30ish. Thanks for pointing out the heaviest impact settings :) I also have a 3440 21:9 and I dropped my res scaler to 75% and got LOTS of frames back.
Enable Game Mode How do you expect to get good frames in a Microsoft Game, when you are not using their features that are meant to benefit you in games like these. I’m talking about Game Mode, which is a built-in feature within Windows 10. The purpose of Game Mode is to ensure that the game is using 100% of CPU, and no other applications are interfering in the process. Likewise, Game Mode makes a huge difference when enabled, and if you want to get High FPS, you must enable it.
I'm getting degrading performance after just 2h of flight and will steadily degrade to the point where it's just a slideshow and CTD if i leave it long enough (5-6+ hrs). Apart from testing your tips i've also tried swiching off player and AI traffic, graphics to lowest, cleared the community folder and made sure to have no background applications running but doesn't help. I got the latest nvidia driver, My specs: i7 8700k, gtx1080, 32GB ram, SSD evo 970. In dev mode i can read that "CoherentGTUIThread" is bouncing fast between 2 and 200 ms. Any idea what the root cause might be here?
@@Q8Pilot I found the cause, not sure how i manage to overlook it but it is the photogrammetry mode. After switching it off i have the same good performance after 15+ hrs as i have just after takeoff.
Goodnight. Does anyone have the same crash as me on the Xbox version fs20. I did the update yesterday.. But now the ND screens and the A320 map are getting static. The plane is following the flight plan but the screen on both the map and the ND is frozen. Hugs Itamar
(5600X / RTX 3060 Ti (OC'd) / 1440P native. Those NCP settings iare unfortunately not really helping me. I have a Gsync compatible LG 27GL83A, and If I turn OFF Vsync in both NCP and in game, its not very smooth when panning in cockpit (or external for that matter). As soon as i set MSFS Vsync ON and to 30 or 60, things gets smooth again. When setting a max framerate, lets say 36 - things are still not smooth at all. When turning off Max framerate in NCP, its a bit better - but not near as smooth as with Vsync ON (its a kind of adaptive Vsync in game) in the game. I just wish there was a 40fps setting in game. BUT if the FPS dips below 60 I guess my Gsync compatible monitor takes care of that, right? Cant really decide what to use here...
@@Q8Pilot when using g-sync only... It's not really very smooth. When using vsync in game everything is kind of smooth. From what i have understood g sync should do the job by itself. Not sure why this doesn't seem to work. I am back to vsync in game and 30 FPS. Vsync off in ncp. Does g sync compatible monitors have problems around 30-40 FPS? Thanks for good guide... I am using the other settings i recommended in ncp. ✨👍

There is also another element: deleting 3d cities from the World Updates (their photogrammy). For some reason, some of these 3d cities/models conflict with one another causing FPS loss for some of us. I deleted all 3d cities a part from the US (since this is where I mainly fly). There is a bug but not for all of us. The other part is not properly loading your GPU enough which is a different story. As usual, your advice did help me some and I appreciate that. I have an 8086k 5ghz, 2080ti, 32gb ram and TLOD still brings your CPU down regardless of power. The GPU is hardly effected for me. I also have over 200gb of freeware scenery, most of all ORBX and Contrails scenery payware and using this in the Cessna 414, CRJ or DC-6 at KJFK to get these results. Also AIG traffic at 70% and offline traffic at 20%. Going to the Teteboro payware airport I get even better FPS at 30, no vysnc. I have a gsync 4k monitor so that does help reduce fps loss. TLOD is 150 like you suggested as turning it down to 100 does some for performance but I bumped down a few of your settings. LOD was increased from 100 to 200 as it had little changes to FPS. I lied, your advice helped a lot!
Thank you for your helpful review , I did all tryouts like you explained in this video a lot of times previously and your video is 100% correct & confirmed my doubts, now correct me if I am wrong , it seems that whenever a world update for a specific region is released there will be a low FPS around the airport even if you have a high end g.card , but as soon as you take off things will normalize to normal FPS , the only update I found that didnt affect the airport scenery a lot was Australia update with A32NX it has very smooth scenery , but Europe airports were really affected with the updates . though it has beautiful scenery from above . Anyway just thought of sharing my experience thanks again for the extra tips you gave us and your time you spent for it , great videos as always my friend & all the best . BR
Thankk you for sharing your experince. Yes it looks like scenery requires optimization every time there is a SimUpdate. Even aircraft liveries may not work after each update. It is kind of irritating, but we have to live with it 😀
Thanks for sharing Q8! But can you try to reduce "Objects level of detail" from 200 to 100? You will not notice a visual degredation, but a way better performance (on my machine). Please tell me your experience with this.
I'm about to recieve my EVGA 3070ti ftw3 ultra tomorrow. I'm running 3840x1080p, 32gb ram, & Ryzen 7 5800x. You think this will be a good card for ultra settings?
Hi, I agree with Q8 Pilot….the 3070ti is faster than the 2080ti so it is a very respectable performer. You may need to turn a few settings down from Ultra to high and your good to go. 👍
I hope people at least try this and possibly see how much flight fidelity they could be missing. Many simply stare at the FPS counter and go UP on the settings until the counter starts to fall off. Get your fav plane and do some touch and goes. Notice that over the fence and critical flare to touch how it feels, not the FPS. Now cut all the graphics to low. Now do it. I can tell by the way the air feels. With zero deadzones, stick sensitivity high the aircraft feels dynamic and not lethargic. Now decide if you really need window frames, roof tiles and trees 20 miles away.
Great information 👍 i now know that nothing is wrong with my hardware 😂 Since MSFS 2020 is a fairly modern game I expect it to easily match the frame rate of my monitor (144HZ) which of course it didn’t. Now i now it is due to the game itself. I get 35-50 frames with everything set on ultra and a renderscale of 200. This with the rtx 3090 and amd ryzen 9 5950x cpu. With these tips i can at least drop the load on the cpu and tranfer it more to the gpu utilization, which is great 👍
Good Evening Captain: Thanks so much for your time and effort in producing this video regarding Microsoft FS settings. I am a total computer neophyte, and have stuggled mightily this year with XPlane 11. I have been watching your videos/live streams for this past year and am highly impressed with your knowledge, competence and ability. I have decided to try the Microsoft FS 2020 and see if this will be more computer friendly to me. Thanks for the settings tips, should help me get started. Can I ask what program you are using to monitor your computer's performance? Thanks again for all you do for flight simming.
Hi Q8Pilot, excellent settings recommendations, made a huge difference in FPS, now I can fly smoothly, more enjoyable. Kept everything at max except the settings you mentioned, lowered them as suggested, also at OS level made your changes as well for Nvidia Control Panel. Flying with RTX3060, 64Gb RAM, i7-11800H (laptop). The only setting I kept is max frame rates in Nvidia Control Panel left it OFF (Global Settings). Do you think that if I change it to max 36fps as you suggested will get better performance? Thanks. Subscribed and liked :-)

Thank you for this video! I am suffering fps degradation over time. I start out with stellar performance and after 1 1/2-2 hours it just drops off to 10 fps. Not sure if any of these tweaks will help but I will give it a try. I have the PMDG 737-700 but I am hesitant to buy the Fenix as the sim is unusable for anything over 1 hour. If anyone has intel (no pun intended) on how to fix that issue, please reply below. Very frustrated right now! Anyway thanks again!
Hi Q8 Pilot. I have similar settings, with an ASUS tug gaming 3090 OC. I just put Shadow play to record at 30 FPS, but for me it gives slightly choppy videos, as I do aerobatics, so the picture changes all the time. I put back Shadow play to record at 60 FPS. Otherwise I already had almost exactly you settings. 👍
None of the graphic settings change my fps a whole lot except render scale and resolution because I am GPU limited running 1440p ultrawide 21:9 . Changing those two I can gain 10-20fps. My GPU is nowhere close to 3090 level however my 10700k does the job. Sims runs 60+fps in rural areas if I lower to 1440p 16:9
Thanks very much for this article, followed your easy instructions then did a flight from EGLL and back. Result as you predicted, steady 35 FPS. my machine is not top end x570 mother board with Ryzen 9 3950x and RTX 2080Ti so have a lot of settings on high not ultra.

hi, nicely done video, have you noticed how the CPU and GPU are being used to about 33% of their full capacity?? do you know how to improve this?? I wanted to ask which tool you're using to show FPS and all the other stats, it looks very nice, do you know if it works in VR??
The tool I use is FPSMonitor. Link in the description. I noticed the low utilization. It has improved after the couple of fixes from Asobo. But it should be much better.
Superb tips, thanks for the informative video
Thanks for watching!
Excellent video. Thanks for your sage advice!
Thanks for stopping by Mark.
The flicker is a problem with the scenery. Do you have it at all airports?
@@Q8Pilot It is definitely worse in some versus others. Gatwick flightsim.to being one of the worst. Most noticeably on building windows.
Can you explain how to open all these windows. Some of us are not as computer savvy.
Just type in the windows search bar like I did in the video.
Excellent video. What is the utility you are using to monitor CPU, GPU, and frame rates?
FPSMonitor, link is in the descrpiton.
I am on the same OS, but the Graphics Acceleration requires a graphic card that supports it.
@@Q8Pilot Thanks a lot
@Q8Pilot; Could you PLEASE tell me what Frame Rate Counter/Statistics application are you using as shown at 3:58 etc? Awesome Vid .. as usual Q8. Keep up ther good work.
It is FPSMonitor. Link in the description.
@@Q8Pilot Yes Sir I see it now. I was looking but did not see the "Tree" because I was looking too deep in the "Woods". It's right there at the very top. Thank you again.
Does MSFS have a quick look system like XPlane or does it still have the incredibly difficult to use camera system?
The camera system is a bit of burden to learn but once you learn it, it is very good not excellent =)
@@Q8Pilot MSFS makes me realise how much I appreciate xplane
Mega video thanks to you. I set it the way you described. Super constant fps . What I would never have thought is that it is worth it with Nvidia vsync and in msfs vsync to turn off...really good
Glad this was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
My 2 cents.
do you have anything for general options: data?
Not sure I follow your question? Can you explain further please?
Enable Game Mode
How do you expect to get good frames in a Microsoft Game, when you are not using their features that are meant to benefit you in games like these.
Game mode doesn't work. Don't believe everything Microsoft tells you =)
Great settings man. Thanks!

Really not sure what this is, but hope Asobo would do something about the degrading performance after SimUpdate 9.
@@Q8Pilot I found the cause, not sure how i manage to overlook it but it is the photogrammetry mode. After switching it off i have the same good performance after 15+ hrs as i have just after takeoff.
Hi there: what are you using for FPS counter?
FPSMonitor.
Why is your GPU not being utilized? Must be CPU limited.
Correct!
Goodnight. Does anyone have the same crash as me on the Xbox version fs20. I did the update yesterday.. But now the ND screens and the A320 map are getting static. The plane is following the flight plan but the screen on both the map and the ND is frozen. Hugs Itamar
Sorry I haven't tried the Xbox version.

Keep G-Sync on for the monitor, just turn off vertical sync for the game from the control panel.
Nice suggestions. These are things I would have never thought of.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
I can’t even get on the game itself but n xbox it just crashes every time I load it up apparently this is happening to a lot of other people
Sorry to hear that!
@@Q8Pilot they need to fix it asap because even when I do manage to get in the game I get tons of ctds and all the screens go black in the cockpit and approach mode ils and all that doesn’t work but then it crashes again after 10 mins but this is only when I do get on the game apparently everyone else is having the same issues
Thank you for sharing your experience and taking the time to write. Apprecaite it.
What's the name of the Frame Rate Monitor Software you are using ?
Link provided in the video descrption.
Amazing video (as always expected). By the way, would you create a video about best setting using OpenXR Toolkit and VR ?
Thank you Ayman, apologies, but I don't use VR.
Object level detail reduction will remove a lot of the buildings and to me it ruins the experience. It would be my last resort.
I think "balancing" resolution scale and LOD is key.
Only you know which you prefer.
Optimisation is key, and it's very subjective.
Amazing video
3900x+6700xt+32gb - 3072x1728 - High preset - terrain lod 100 - pre cache ultra - shadow map 2048 = 45+fps every where in the Fenix
I'm about to recieve my EVGA 3070ti ftw3 ultra tomorrow. I'm running 3840x1080p, 32gb ram, & Ryzen 7 5800x. You think this will be a good card for ultra settings?
No; you barely Will get 5 FPS. Sorry.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@gertwallen lol. That's funny because I have currently a 2060 Super and achieve 30 to 40 fps in airliners at busy airports.
You should be fine!! Just tweak your settings until you reach that sweet spot.
@@Q8Pilot Thanks for a logical answer. Lotta toxicity on here now days.
Good advise!
Am grounded with SU9 update but a Great Video Just the same Thank You
That's unfortunate, hopefully the patch in progess would address all your issues.
Once I get my 3060, I can’t wait to fly MSFS for the first time!!!
Have fun!
Hi Bill, thank you for your kind words and support. The app is FPSMonitor fpsmon.com/en/?src=app

Welcome aboard my friend. You certainly experiment with locking your frames. If your temps are good, then leave it.
@@Q8Pilot Can you provide a link to the app you use to measure fps and temps in MSFS, I mean the left overlay that shows in 4:32? And also, what max temps are good? Thanks again

Anyway thanks again!
thank you for video

Hi Q8 Pilot. I have similar settings, with an ASUS tug gaming 3090 OC. I just put Shadow play to record at 30 FPS, but for me it gives slightly choppy videos, as I do aerobatics, so the picture changes all the time. I put back Shadow play to record at 60 FPS. Otherwise I already had almost exactly you settings. 👍
Thanks for sharing your experience Raymond and for watching the video! Stay safe my friend!
@@Q8Pilot And you too stay safe.
But what’s with Xbox addons ?
I don't own xbox so I am not sure.
They've been talking about weather for so long. Just wished they would address that already.
The weather is improved a lot in this version!
I increase about 10 fps in New York
Glad this has helped! Thanks for watching!
It can’t be real that you get 30 fps with a 3090 and the 10900k. Microsoft has to fix that massive fps drops. I jump from 45 fps to 8
Yes they need to fix it for sure.
For me always crash to desktop … always always …
Some have reported the same. This update is somewhat unstable at times and definitely brought performance down.
Thanks very much for this article, followed your easy instructions then did a flight from EGLL and back.
Result as you predicted, steady 35 FPS. my machine is not top end x570 mother board with Ryzen 9 3950x and RTX 2080Ti so have a lot of settings on high not ultra.
Glad it has helped you. Happy flying!
