She's so funny. And smart! PS: No, this is not sarcasm. I know there is a strong impulse to mock and hate women who conform to established standards for beauty and sex appeal, especially when they know it and use it to their advantage. But women can be smart and pretty. And she is. Her essay discussing the complexities of being sexualised and earning your living through this sexualisation is very, very nuanced and thoughtful. She discusses it from an angle that is rare: talking about the complex relations between body, power, gender and labour that we all experience in one way or another. We all walk the tight rope between exploitation and empowerment, between trying to appease and attract others and trying to assert autonomy over how we are and how we are seen. We experience this in both our work lives and our private lives. This is the very deeply analytical value of her essay - that she is taking her own case of earning money off her appearance and making a much broader argument about the limitations, power and vulnerabilities that we all experience because of and through our bodies. And every time I hear her speak, it is very evident that she is an intelligent woman who always has some insight about the world around her.

@@kayzee25 Thanks! First, a disclaimer, I don't agree with some of the ideas they are discussing on education. But she is mentioning TikTok as a source of education about things (which sound too new agie for me) alongside recommending a book by a renowned feminist scholar bell hooks. Lots of people use new media to educate themselves about new things. I get all my dinosaur facts from TH-cam lol. That's not traditional institutionalised education, just another fun way to learn about things and be curious.

They don't conform, they actually CHOSE to be themselves even though is really tough because as you said many people hate them and project their insecurities on them because those women look good, and looking good equals stupid to some people.
They do not conform. Quite the opposite actually, they are like this and they have to fight in order to be themselves (a woman who is attractive and doesn't hide it with... I don't know what.... you name it) and makes money from it, which is something that she loves, and she has to face all this backlash and hate.
Don't forget that in matriarchal societies women did not cover their bodies. If you cover itr you conform to the patriarchal society. Is the complete opposite than what you said. The patriarchal society actually labels woman like Emily as "desprate for attention" and "women who dress for men". That is misogynistic. Just because she looks like that, that doesn't mean that she has to not be herself. The patriarchal society DOES NOT want women to look like she does and show off their bodies, they want the exact opposite.
To not be yourself and dress like men want (aka demurely). What are you talking about?! How is she conforming to anything because she was born this way when she does the OPPOSITE of what men want?
Men label those women as "sl@ts" and they sexually harrass and "male gaze" them (also harrassment) all the time. That is very traumatic. How does she conform to that when she was born this way and she continues to do what she finds rebellious and to endure all this objectification while trying to prove that she can be what people call a sl@t and a smart woman?
Since when dressing up "sl@tty" ( I don't like or agree with that word but I am using it to make a point) and being underestimated in todays misogynistic society is considered conforming? There are women out there who marry to a misogynist and dress up like 50 year old women in their 20s. They are conforming in order to have his money and supposed "respect". Men don't want women to be sexually libarated except if they treat them like litteral gods and haven't had sex with a lot of other men. How is she conforming exactly?
