This is a cool project. I watch a lot of videos of people building go-karts, buggies, atv's etc. Hell, I'm subbed to two different channels that are building mini aluminum jet boats right now. But, I think this is cooler than both of those. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished product.

As usual, a well put together video. I always think: "I wonder whether he'll put a brace on that. Ah yep, he's done it." Nice to see someone who takes pride in doing a good job. Only thing I think you might need to consider is RPMs. That drive shaft from a VW is likely not rated for any more than about 2000rpm and I've just looked at SKF bearings in those oval housings (not sure what you've used but I cant see it being better than SKF) and for a 20mm ID they're only rated for 8500 max RPM. Some problems to chew over... Maybe fine for occasional use but I think they'll become headaches if left unaddressed. All the best!
You are right with the bearings. But i think that the driveshaft could be fine, because it wont have to take a lot of torque. Spinning way faster, but less load than what it was build for. Anyways, driveshafts and bearings are not very expensive. Worth a try and if it works, it works.
You definitely have to add the ZZR decal to the jet ski when you're done and painted. This is awesome buddy, this things gonna fly. Be safe, and can't wait for part 4

Awesome project! You really should be using epoxy laminated marine plywood beams instead of poplar 2x4’s. Also You really need to use a dial indicators for shaft alignment to measure runout to reduce vibration caused by misalignment.
If anyone else tried that frankenstein driveline, I'd be concerned. I have confidence that it will work beautifully for you because you are so talented at making stuff like that magically work!

I’ve had plenty of name brand jerskis over the years but there’s something about building one from scratch that has always interested me. Keep it up!!
Make certain to add some plates below those wood runners where your engine mounts bolt through it,otherwise you gonna have some loose bolts issues very quickly... Blue loctite is your friend also... Great idea on how to couple the engines output shaft to the jet drive..
Awesome engine mounting design with some problem solving that's impressive. Most aim for a direct drive to the impeller but you did one better with a design for any engine, with the right tools helps, lol. Or skilled shop! I hope you sell these designs too so we all look forward to future videos & to see this bad boy burnup the water!!! The engine mount frame is user friendly for several different motor/tranny setups.
You might make sure that the oiling system for that engine is up to snuff. You may have to add/reposition baffles in the oil pan, the engine will be tilting in directions it wasn't necessarily meant to in that configuration. Also, think about putting a system in where oil changes can be done without removing the engine, or reaching underneath it. An easy solution for both is to use a dry sump system. You may also think about using a heat exchanger for cooling, as opposed to just letting the water from the lake/river/ocean/etc. run through it. This engine doesn't really have anything (anodes, coatings, etc.) to save it from corrosion. Other than that, keep up the good work.
Yeah, I was thinking exactly the same after watching Superfastmatt who had the same issues in his motorcycle engine mounted in that tiny Honda. I can imagine the issues will be much greater on a jetski, which is a lot less stable to say the least.

Mooi werk weer! Heel bekend motorblok! Zit ook in de trekker✔️ Ik zie nog wel wat uitdagingen voor verderop in de bouw zoals de uitlaat die heel dicht langs het hout moet komen. De rvs bochten van mijn uitlaat waren met 1 minuut blauw van de hitte. Ook hoop ik dat bij vol gas varen en springen (lees 170 pk op de aandrijflijn, dan springen en weer in het water landen) het hele motorblok of de aandrijflijn eruit gerukt wordt. Maar dat zal je uitvoerig gaan testen, daar twijfel ik niet aan! Mooi project, hoge bouw kwaliteit en engineering👌🏻🔥
Fantastic build. All of the people questioning the integrity of wood forgot about Viking ships that sailed all over the world. After epoxy and matt fibers it will be strong and water proof but still retain the vibration dampening and flexibility. Very cool.
Only thing I would keep in mind is that those CV joints are designed for heavy loads at low rpm. @60MPH with 2 foot tyres would have the shafts spinning less than 1000RPM. That's why you never se a welded on balance weight on them like a driveshaft( which is closer to 4K RPM and has a wider orbital path. 12.000 RPM would show any balance problems. If you have rebuilt these you know that they are fairly brittle with slotted cages and 6 ball bearings. Before you use it I would add an all around guard just in case it lets go. Your boat hull is below, and your crotch is above, lol. Be safe. Have fun!!

Love this video series, and making me plan to build my own using your plans, a few questions I do have from watching so far 1) how are you going to join the 2 halves of the jetski body together and 2) once the two halves are joined how will you access the engine to service it
Great job I would be concerned about the amount of power you are putting through that rubber belt considering contact is minimal through the teeth on the pulleys. But you have a great skill. Could you fit a safety loop over the drive shaft in case it becomes detached. Great videos keep them coming.
Least its the first thing to go when something gives out and yeah drive shaft can over time create tress cracks from the vibrations and give out, slamming into hull, so that needs to be addressed asap. I kinda like the belt idea for the quiet operation compared to chains, but it will be nightmare to swap while on water when it eventually snaps due age or just power going trough it.
Nice progress. I recommend you put a bolt tensioner on the belt drive as those slots will slip and lose tension. It's a 160bhp engine with gearing reduction remember... Also I would not have kept the gearing personally, just used the belt reduction. And I hope the engine is not too far back for weight distribution. I'm sure it is similar to the jetski but that's a small engine and large hull compared to the jetskis themselves. I hope it works great.
That’s great stuff! Man it’ll have some power. The belt drive tensioners may need a locking bolt to stop them from twisting loose with the amount of torque that engine will have, same thing happened on my golf cart jackshaft..

I would be more worried about hack job drive shaft witch if snapped in any kind of speed would slam hole in the hull, though belt drive there works as mechanical fuse so thankfully it wont wreck everything if pump jams from debris, but replacing the belt will be big issue if you are on the water and it snaps, so he might want to add paddle holder into the frame as back up method, hell places and storage for oars might be good idea.
i like your idea and OverallConcept i began riding PersonalWatercraft in the late 1970s then continued buying new machines into the 19990s i always thought it would be kind of cool to have some type of Transmission on the drive system once the Manufacturers started installing Engines at 1000 Cc and larger BTW i have ridden a lot of Motorcycles as well and i liked controlling the speed of my bikes through the gear boxes instead ofthe brake systems because it gav yu the ability to Power out a turn

I like 1200 and the price is affordable to the others but the frame and plastics are only something a mother could love. love the fabrication and swap inspires me to want to get my money right and dream big as well. With the right knowledge and skill anything can be made
It will work. I love how u use pretty much hand tools to build stuff. Except the lathe. But yes I would use belt over chain. Chain if it broke would blow a hole through the hull, that would be bad. So belt is way better. Gearing on engine you will put it in 6th and leave it there, that's my prediction. Bsafe dude. Love the build

As the engine/water jet are mounted separately the belt drive between the two is a seriously weak point given the rpm/power it will have to deal with. In performance boats, alignment of the engine and propeller shaft is critical. If cv joints/belts were a good way to go I imagine Yamaha, etc would have done it... Anyway, hope I'm proved wrong! 🙂

looks good! i had a car engine (4age) direct drive with some car cvs, (around 7-9k rpm max) it needed high speed cv boots or at high speed the boots turned into pancakes and pushed out all the grease everywhere!
Still significant wobble on the sprocket side when you rotate the driveshaft in the last part of the video. Think that will cause lots of vibrations. Maybe you can reduce the weight more in the connection piece you made? You also might want to make a metal drive shaft tunnel for safety. Also on bottom side. When that drive shaft breaks it will cause havoc.
Pinch that belt around the prop shaft pulley with a couple of roller tensioners. There’s a tremendous amount of force on the prop shaft and it may slip in the current configuration.
Awesome! Have you thought about a tensioner bolt on that belt drive pulley? I was thinking like an alternator tension bolt, just to stop it slipping in the slots.
In all honesty, I would have put a sleeve over the joint on the driveshaft that you welded , and also beef up the structure that the cv joint goes into , there will be massive torque loads on the area . Otherwise top work as always 👏 👌 👍
@@homemade_madness I did a similar thing before and the weld would keep shearing off , so I put a chrome vanadium socket over the welded join and welded that in place , it's never failed since 400+hp 😉 👍👍👍

Normally a jet drive doesn't spin much faster than 8500/9k

Oiling is always something major to consider when swapping motorcycle engines into non motorcycle vehicles

looks good! i had a car engine (4age) direct drive with some car cvs, (around 7-9k rpm max) it needed high speed cv boots or at high speed the boots turned into pancakes and pushed out all the grease everywhere!
Still significant wobble on the sprocket side when you rotate the driveshaft in the last part of the video. Think that will cause lots of vibrations. Maybe you can reduce the weight more in the connection piece you made? You also might want to make a metal drive shaft tunnel for safety. Also on bottom side. When that drive shaft breaks it will cause havoc.

The engine needs a top mount, the rotating force of the drive shafts might throw off the balance when riding? Great vid!!

Pinch that belt around the prop shaft pulley with a couple of roller tensioners. There’s a tremendous amount of force on the prop shaft and it may slip in the current configuration.
Cool! Does the engine spin the prop the right direction?

Awesome! Have you thought about a tensioner bolt on that belt drive pulley? I was thinking like an alternator tension bolt, just to stop it slipping in the slots.

In all honesty, I would have put a sleeve over the joint on the driveshaft that you welded , and also beef up the structure that the cv joint goes into , there will be massive torque loads on the area . Otherwise top work as always 👏 👌 👍

@@homemade_madness I did a similar thing before and the weld would keep shearing off , so I put a chrome vanadium socket over the welded join and welded that in place , it's never failed since 400+hp 😉 👍👍👍
