  • Viofo’s new A119V3 improves upon the V2 version we recommended in 2017 with the best night quality we’ve seen in a dash cam so far. Its stealthiness, user-friendliness, and build quality continues to beat others in the same budget category.

    THE VIOFO A119V3, OTHER PICKS & WHERE TO GET THEM
    I've purchased all dash cams and accessories since 2017. No paid reviews here. When you buy using some links below, we may earn some money at no cost to you.
    1️⃣ VIOFO A119V3 | Best Budget Camera
    Great for nearly all drivers who want performance and value without spending much more on premium options. OCD Tronic is the only authorized retailer on Amazon Canada and USA. I recommend getting the polarizing filter to reduce glare.
    Amazon:
    • USA: amzn.to/2QoQEPT
    • CAN: amzn.to/2koSAL8 | Only the GPS+CPL bundle is available but at least it’s much cheaper than USA.
    • UK: amzn.to/2m6A3DK
    BlackBoxMyCar
    Been recommending them for a long time. For a dash cam specialized retailer that's been in the business for a while (aka won't disappear overnight) and knows hardwiring / luxury vehicles, go with them.

    VIOFO A119V2 | 1440P Value Pick
    Still a great pick - if you can find it. After many years Viofo has ended its production and is solely focused on selling the A119V3.

    2️⃣ 70MAI PRO & PRO PLUS | Best Value 1440P Dash Cams
    If you're looking for the A119V3's video quality but want to spend less, 70Mai's is your value king. Their Pro cameras deliver amazing 1440P video quality, WiFi, but compared to Viofo they have a battery and poor customer service. If you don't live somewhere hot this is definitely a camera to consider.

    3️⃣ UPGRADE PICK: VIOFO A129 DUO
    You can't add a rear camera to the A119V3 but there is a nice upgrade if you get the A129 DUO. It has 1080P front and back. We talk about why a rear camera matters and how the DUO is better than other budget dual-channel options for around $170.

    5️⃣ ANKER ROAV A1 | Top Cheap Pick 6:47
    One of the best cheap dash cams under $55. The A1's combination of good video quality, useful features like WiFi and backed by a worldwide warranty makes the A1 hard to beat. The downside is its use of lithium-ion batteries making it a bad choice for hot environments.

    Thanks for putting a good amount of camera footage early in the review. Can never understand why so many other reviewers spend so much time unboxing and fiddling around with the parts but make you wait until the end to see any useful footage. I mean, c'mon, if the video quality isn't as good as what you're seeking then why bother to watch the whole review? As always, this comprehensive review tells us everything we need to know including some things we may not have realized we need to know!

      @@Lam I had already known about dash cams from the compilations available on TH-cam. The prices kept getting cheaper so I bought one for my car and my wife's car. It's one of those things you hope you never need, but I'd rather have it and not need it then the other way around. My brother was convinced and bought two of the Viofo's for his cars too.
      I bought the first dash cams in 2016. Two different brands that were not Viofo. They were larger and shaped more like a point and shoot camera. Both of those stopped working after a year or so.
      Your breakdown of the various cameras and their components really helped. Amazon reviews are pretty useless since most reviewers don't give the full pros and cons of a particular camera. For example, I live in a hot climate and the use of capacitors rather than batteries last better in those climates. I did not know this. I also use a high endurance micro SD card for the cameras. Both Viofo's are going strong over two years in the brutal Arizona heat. My brother bought the GPS modules with his Viofo but the heat cracked it so those don't seem to be as durable. The cameras work fine though.
      Your reviews are very helpful, and I especially like the side by side video comparisons.

  • @meekyw.4010
    @meekyw.4010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for your videos it's been very helpful. The only constructive criticism I have, is I wish you consistantly referred to the individual dash cam by one name when you're doing the full review of it. Although I do love when you compare and contrast the other cams along with the full review, it would be great if consistently you were referring to the one of said full review by the same name. As with this full review you often referred to it using 3 different names/previous names, aka nicknames. I just think it would allow for better understanding and processing of the information for the novice dash cam viewer.

    Hey Andrew! I used my V3 for the first time today! :) The audio is pretty incredible, it picks up my voice really well, and the radio even better. It captures the thump of my subs as well, pretty impressive for such a small unit! Very impressive audio.
    I left the protective covering on the lens and the video is still really impressive. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference tomorrow with the plastic film removed.
    The video isn't silky smooth on playback (it is really nice though), I may tinker with the settings a bit as I'm sure its a FPS issue, but the paused picture is crystal clear, and that's prolly more important.
    So far after recording for roughly half hour of running errands, I'm pretty impressed with the results of the V3, both audio and video. It even picks up traffic beside my with the windows closed, really sensitive mic in this thing!
    Definitely happy with the V3, especially for the $$, excellent value! I'll get ya some pics on the twitters when I get it installed in my Pete :)

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Apple - it's going to look so much better once the film is removed! It blurs the video considerably and is only meant for in-transit protection. The video on playback may be jerky depending on how good your computer is. 1440P videos require a lot more processing power to work properly. Glad you're happy with it. Hopefully you'll never have to use it except for interesting footage you happen to catch.

    • @applejacks971
      @applejacks971 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lam The clarity of the video without the film on the lens in beyond incredible. I left it on so I could tinker with the angle adjustment without fear of scratching the lens as I got more familiar with the unit.
      I changed to 60fps and cleared the playback up to smooth as butter. My PC is pretty stout so I figured it'd be a Viofo setting, issue rectified :)
      The performance of my V3 is beyond incredible. I'd share my vid's but hey, you have one so you already know :)
      Only downside is, tis really hard to get it mounted straight/level as the screen is so tiny. I can see where the wifi capability would make that so much more convenient. I got it 98% straight in the Vette with the sticky mount, I can live with that. Have a great weekend!

      I'm a rideshare driver.. so decided it would be a good idea to get one.
      My first one was a cheap one I got a Walmart just so I had something.. needed it quickly, and just grabbed what they had at the time 2014/15 or so.
      Shortly after that I started researching different dash cams.
      My next one was a Mini 805, shortly after that I decide to get another cam since I had a another car so wanted a cam for that car too and I got a G1W-CB from SpyTec I believe.
      I then purchased the Viofo A119v2. Mostly based on your recommendation, and other videos I saw showing its very good video quality day and night .
      And now my most recent is a Vantue N2 Pro.
      I had been using, the old one from Walmart which had infrared lights on it, as my interior camera, the viofo as my front facing camera, and the g1w as my rear facing camera it made it a bit messy on the inside of the car , lots of wires to tuck away, but since I had the cameras and they all functioned perfectly I didn't see the point in replacing them with a central all in one system which are very expensive.
      Recently however the Walmart camera began to have problems with the SD card not always writing correctly especially when it was hot out., and since the interior camera is quite important as a Rideshare driver, so I decided to spring for the vantrue N2 Pro when it went on sale on Amazon for $80 off regular price.
      That takes care of front facing an inside, and I moved the mini 805 to the rear window since it was smaller and did not hang down into the cargo area, I had luggage occasionally hit the G1w and damage the ball mount.
      I ended up leaving the viofo a119, facing forward also, quite frankly the image quality on the vantrue has got a bit of a blue tint to it, and because it ends up being farther away from the glass due to the suction cup mount, and my windshield has some pitting I found that at night the glass is disrupting the quality of the video rather badly, that doesn't seem to happen on the viofo, I suspect because it's much closer to the glass. I also like the alerts that it gives if there's a problem and it gives me a backup front facing camera in case something goes wrong with the Vantrue which does not have the same kind of alert statuses for failure.
      So I just left viofo a119 in place, run the Vantrue right next to it, and the Mini 805 in the rear now.
      I also run the Lexar XC-1 as cards you had recommended.. I've never had one fail yet.. and one of them is from Dec of 2016 in use almost continuous.
      Hope that information helps.. if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, kens that helps a lot. Quite the collection of cameras you built up over time too! The N2 Pro is a good choice for what you do - I'm surprised about the blue tint but at least you got the A119 covering for you in the front. Haha I'm impressed you have a three (technically four camera) setup, that's awesome. Just two more for the sides and you'll have every angled covered lol.
      Thanks a bunch for sharing and I'm good. Have a good day // evening!

      Hey Andrew, I would be glad to help. I first found out about dash cams when the Russians would upload dash cam footage back in 2010. You know the ones i'm talking about. I decided to buy one in 2016 after a friend of mine was in a car accident early in that year. She had a dash cam at that time of the accident and the guy that hit her tried in court to say it was her fault when the dash cam showed that he was not only at fault but he set the whole accident up himself to try and claim on her insurance. He was convicted of insurance fraud because my friend had a dash cam to speak for her. I watched Car Cam Central to decide which dash cam was right for me at that time. Your videos have been very informative. Keep up the good work Andrew. Thank you!!

    Based on your excellent reviews of the Viofo A129, which seems to be an A119 with fore and aft cameras, and the Viofo A119 v2, I went ahead and purchased the Viofo A119 v3 just a couple of weeks ago. I agree with your assessment and I am very pleased with my purchase. I purchased the GPS unit as well, mostly for the ease of disconnecting the dashcam so that I can easily take it either out of the car when I'm parked or hide it very well before getting out. Having lost a GPS navigator just a week prior to my purchase may have influenced that decision. I am still experimenting around with the video settings to get the same quality images that you show that you get with yours. It's nice to have that option. Oh, and one more point... your point on the warnings has already proved its worth. I like having a constant message and a constant beep warning me of a problem.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ed, thanks for your trust. Glad it's working out. For many shots, I use a dashmat - basically a black carpet on top of my dashboard which helps reduce reflections. A circular polarizer helps as well but it won't be as clear. Most people don't want a mat though.
      As for settings, keep it at 1440P, you can bump it up to high bitrate if you don't mind losing about 20% of your total recording time. That will help at night and in complex environments during the day. I was recording using at medium settings for most of the videos you saw.
      Glad the warning messages helped out - what issue did you have with your camera?

    • @Platyfurmany
      @Platyfurmany 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lam I have one of the polarizer filters on order. I initially had problems with a memory card that I already own. So I purchased a 128Gb Samsung Pro Endurance card and formatted the card in the dashcam. Everything has worked just fine since then. One thing I wasn't aware of is that to get all the data from the video files, I had to download the Dashcam Viewer. This allows me to also access the GPS data as well as watch the video. One plus from that is that Dashcam Viewer can stitch all the video files of a particular trip together so that I can review everything on just one file. I'll take your advice about the video settings. Thanks again for your review(s). They saved me a lot of hassle in trying to figure out which dashcam to buy!

      @@Lam Hi Andrew, I don't know if you'll find any value in my answers, but here they are.
      1) I found out about dashcams some years ago from TH-cam's recommendations. Since then, and I'm not kidding, I've watched several hundred dashcam videos - (mostly crash videos. ;-p), but also lots of reviews.
      2) I bought my first cameras about two years ago, but they were Walmart crap- cams, I've since upgraded to various configurations and prefer dual camera setups.
      3) I tend to make a study of things that interest me. I understand that some people need to start from the beginning, and topics that seem very obvious to me may be news to others. Having said that, I like the details that may not be obvious to even experienced dashcam users. For instance, when I was new to the subject I did not know that there were power supplies that had adjustable low-voltage and cutoff timers. I'm actually in the market for an affordable unit that has the exact features of the Grdian, but I'm not willing to spend the $50 US they want for one. Whenever covering a topic, I like to know both the pros and cons. For example, using a CPL can be beneficial during the day, but since you lose about 2 stops of light, it will be a hindrance at night. I know time is valuable and I can tell you put a lot of time into producing your reviews, they have a very polished looks to them, however not everyone wants to, or can spend a lot of money on a dashcam, so perhaps budget camera reviews would be helpful to some people - as long as the expectations are kept reasonable. Being objective and not bias is extremely important to me. I have no allegiance to any brand of anything, I just want the truth. Lastly, I know this can be very expensive for reviewers like yourself, but I don't trust reviews where the product was sent from the manufacturer or seller. It's almost impossible not to show some favoritism when you get something for free.
      Hope that helped.

      >details that may not be obvious to even experienced dashcam users
      This fascinates me as well. I think it's the deeper underlying layers that help create the best reviews. I think we think a lot alike in delving into the details.
      >as long as the expectations are kept reasonable. Being objective and not bias is extremely important to me.
      I agree, like you said expensive. I use affiliate right now to pay the bills but i"m hoping in the future that I can move to a completely membership-driven site. That's a long ways away though.

      @@Lam Glad to help. Like many TH-camrs I like watching road accidents videos from all over the world, and the obvious benefits quickly became clear, like having evidence in case of an accident where oneself or others are involved. (Interestingly enough, in South Africa, where I live, dash cams are not yet as popular as in most other countries).
      Around 2014 I bought a Garmin 20 for the vehicle I use for holidays, and I realized the footage, although not high quality, can also be used in holiday videos. After that I imported two A118s from China for my other two vehicles at $37 each, which I found was excellent value for money. When I installed them, they had the Viofo software on them, and I guess they were just unbranded units from Viofo.
      As I said earlier, they've both given me extremely good service over the last few years, and the quality of the footage is higher than that of the Garmin.
      Partly thanks to your video, I'm going to replace the Garmin with the A119 V3. The Garmin also sometimes want the the microSD card reformatted, while the Viofos have been very tolerant of different cards up till now.
      I like doing my research before I buy something by watching/reading reviews on the internet, and in this case yours convinced me to take the plunge with the V3.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I watched a lot of road accidents too. There's almost a culture of awareness when it comes to the popularity of a dash cam. Normally it starts with someone getting almost screwed over if they didn't have a dash cam for it to spread in the local community.
      Interesting journey with your dash cams. I had the Garmin 20 too, I liked the interface and the fact it would record for a bit more time before shutting down.
      The V3 will serve you well and like you said - very tolerant with SD cards.

      @@Lam My Peterbilts have angled windshields, so the mounts of the A129 would have the video at a range of '7 oclock to 1 oclock', so I went with the A119 in order to get the suction cup mounts for that application (being able to get a 9-3 view).
      I'd still like the A129duo for the rear cam, but I may wait to see how the new 4k unit compares to it. Seeing the 4k model is $250 compared to the current $170 model, I'm not sure the extra $$ will be worth the 4k for me. Time will tell!

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh interesting, thanks for sharing. Didn't know you drove a semi. Interesting, I thought the design of the mount would cover almost all the angles but I guess with a nearly vertical windshield it wouldn't have been as flat as you wanted without the suction mount?
      I think the 4K would get the quality closer to 1440P of the V3 which would be valuable. I think night quality will suffer though as 4K has smaller individual pixel sizes which means more noise.

    • @applejacks971
      @applejacks971 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lam The gps sticky mount for example, would have the cam angled and pointed to the 1030-11 o'clock position, thus looking over the fender, and not straight ahead over the hood and towards the road.
      The adjustable lens of the V2 would be the perfect solution to get the straight forward angle, as you stated regarding mounting in the corner of a windshield, but beings the V2 is somewhat outdated...
      The suction cup mount will allow me to turn the cam to the right (I'll be mounting on the left side of the windshield) as to get a straight view of the road.
      With the 2 sticky mounts it comes with and the 4 3-wire kits, I'll be able to use the V3 in both trucks, my Suburban, and the car.
      Beings it's my first dash cam ever, it's a great value for my 4 applications.

    Question about the parking mode: I really like a dash cam with a parking mode for I work long 12 hours as a nurse. My new Mazda CX-30's 12V is continuously powered (even whem the vehicle is off). This is my first experience with this kind of function. Do you recommend the Viofo 119V3 to be plugged in low bitrate mode? Could this potentially drain the vehicle's battery in the long run?

  • @applejacks971

    I transferred my vid's from today from the V3 to my PC. 16 files, totaling 14ish minutes, ended up being 7.33gb. Settings are 1440p at 30fps, bitrate medium on a Transcend 32gb card.
    There are roads I take with the Vette and truck that I want to save on video (Black Hills, Mt Rushmore, etc). I was hoping to be able to save 15-20 minutes worth of video like I did with my handi-cam. I put that footage in my 'vacation' folder. It would do 4 minute vid's at 12-15MB. The V3 is coming in at 575MB average on a 3 minute video recording in TS. I may reset that to MP4 and see if that makes a difference.
    If not, I may look at the GoPro's for my travel video footage and leave the V3 strictly for 'dash-cam' stuff. Good thing I have a pair of 2tb external hard drives!
    Let me know if you have any other idea's. Thanks!

      I might go with GoPros as the footage is a bit nicer to watch. At night the A119V3 might be better - you can turn off all the branding and on-screen information in the settings so you get clean video. The TS file is the same as MP4 in size, only how it's contained is different.

    Thank you for this! I went ahead and bought the V3! Once I get it and use it, I'll update this comment with a review on how it went.
    I only wish there was a rear camera!
    (8/29/22) Update: The next day after I installed it, someone ran me off the road and they were found 100% at fault because they didn't indicate and ran. Thankfully I was okay, but this camera truly made it worth it in that time! It is SUPER clear, just like he said!
    I am curious, since there isn't a rear dash cam that is like this, would it be viable to use the same thing as a rear dash cam? If not, any suggestions?

      @@Lam You are already doing a phenomenal job with your channel, I've been a subscriber for 3 years now and it's my go to place for Dashcam knowledge.
      1. "How did you find out about Dashcams?"
      As a truck driver I'm most of the time on the road so I thought about getting a camera, I've looked up TH-cam and found your dedicated channel for Dashcams.
      2. "When did you decide to get one?"
      As soon as I learned more about it's importance and reliability, I thought I'd definitely need one, and I tried getting the vicovation opia 2 as you suggested it's the best (at that time) but unfortunately i couldn't manage to get hold of one(not many retailers available)...
      So since I couldn't get the best, I gave up on it, until recently, when my brother got some Dashcams for his car, and since its been awhile, I thought of looking to see recent products.
      Another thing I want to point out, the updates you put in your videos are very handy, I always looked to see what's new, and you mentioned on one of your videos the new Viofo v119 V3, I then checked some TH-cam video for hands-on and it's storage space and new camera sensor made me confident this is a great budget product.
      I'm very happy with my cam and I loved seeing your video confirming my thought, keep up this briliant work.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andrei - that's awesome. Thank you! I try my best and I'm always humbled when people come back to watch even though they've already purchased a camera.
      Thanks for responding to my questions too!
      Too bad about the Vicovation - they've actually pulled out of the consumer market. They decided to focus on OEM (white-label products) and another category. Too bad.
      I try to keep things updated - it's a pet peeve of mine when I go to a review and I find out it's out of date and there's something better but the authors never updated it.
      Speaking of hypocrisy, I need to update the OPIA2 description + pinned comment as I don't think I've updated it yet.
      The V3 is a great product and I'm glad you picked it up. Hopefully, it served for years to come.
      If you don't mind me asking three followup questions.
      Since you been subscribed for so long is there anything you would like me to produce?
      Any feedback on what I can do better?
      Finally, how did you figure out dash cams were important and that reliability matter (if you can remember back that far lol)
      Thanks again Andrei

    • @bablutu
      @bablutu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lam I dont mind any questions, I'm more than glad to help.
      1. "... Is there anything you would like me to produce"-
      From a TH-cam perspective you should definitely grow, for me personally one unique thing and which made pretty confident on your channel is that it is Dashcam dedicated, and I knew focusing on one and only one area, it wouldn't disappoint.
      So you could definitely give it a try on any other tech or stuff that passionate you and dedicate the same you did here, it won't fail to deliver.
      2. "any feedback on what I can do better?"
      From my long response above I think I've already answered this one as well, for me you're already doing a brilliant job with this Dashcam channel, and the updated comments in your old videos are the icing on the cake, bravo, it would be very interesting for me to see you produce other videos focusing other stuff.
      3. "how did you figure out the importance and reliability of Dashcams?"
      Well with wanting to buy a much expensive car, i don't want to risk parking lot damages and obviously traffic incidents situations where you can end up paying for something you didn't commit, that's where Dashcams kick in.

For 1080 if you dont want to spend the extra $ i recommend the outlook, which retails for $79, but you can get on ebay for $27-35 new in box. i have 2 of these in our other cars and they are very nice. not as nice as the viofo with 1440, but for the money are excellent. i wish this guy would review it
