A top video! This is a complicated subject with lots of confusion and misleading advice all over the Web. Mark's explanation, delivered in such a clear coherent manner is brilliant. It completely explains all the elements and the correct way to use them. It must have taken a lot of hard work to produce this incredibly useful explanation. This is definitely a video I will be sharing with my colleagues, quite a few who I know are not getting their iPhone 12 HDR videos to look right. Thank you Mark Spencer for your efforts and commitment to making this video. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
As someone new to video editing, this is the best, concise, and complete video I’ve found on the subject. Not only have you said what to do, you’ve also debunked other recommended methods and even added the compressor step at the end. Thank you so much for this.
This is a perfect example of the outstanding clarity, organization and comprehensive nature of all of the Ripple Training videos. Thank you for taking the time to prepare and present this excellent presentation. I learned a great deal about shooting, editing, and exporting HDR video with the iPhone 12 Pro. Viewing these projects on the new iPad 12.9 in. with its miniLCD display is a visual treat.
Awesome explanation! Have you noticed TH-cam doesn’t handle Dolby Vision uploads very well? The tones are way off on any resolution less than 4k. Maybe it can’t handle the Dolby Vision metadata?
For the first time, I understand a bit of using HDR and SDR in a project and exporting HDR that can display HDR and SDR. Your a great teacher! Thanks!!
I've scoured TH-cam trying to understand this concept and I have to say this video is the Gold Standard on the topic! You absolutely nailed it!!! Thank you so much for this outstanding video!
Simply brilliant, even for someone technically challenged like myself! I was totally stumped today when l uploaded my footage from my new iPhone to Final Cut and discovered how overexposed the clips were....this video saved me a ton of headaches! Cheers 👍🇦🇺😁
I rarely ever comment on videos, but I have been trying to figure out a way to fix the washed out footage from my Iphone 13 and this was the exact fix I needed. Thank you so SO much!
Just a great video with easy to understand explanations. No "influencers" running around with all over body tattoos, No bad repetitive music, and no jump cut, zooms, pans.....every 5 seconds. Thanks you! Just subscribed!
You just clearly explained a bunch of things that were confusing me. Once again, you guys rock. Eventually this will be more standardized but.... We have a while here.
This was the best breakdown of HDR I’ve seen yet. Thank you. Two questions if possible. Can you use the HDR Tools function to convert SD clips within an HDR Library/Project to match up like you could with HDR clips in an SD project? And how come Clips and iMovie on iOS doesn’t have any of these difficulties? What is it doing and what are you losing from a result of the ease of use? Thanks again!
You need to manually grade SDR clips "up" to HDR in an HDR project. Can't comment on Clips and iMovie they may tone map automatically and not give the user an option to manage to process since they are consumer apps.
Thank you for this tutorial, Mark! This really is quite complex as we have no idea what devices and screens people will be viewing our videos and content on. I bought the iPhone 12 Pro specifically for HDR, but I’ve been shooting in SDR more and more because of the complexities of HDR.
It's a crazy transition time for sure but I suspect soon HDR will be the predominant viewing platform. Already supported on TH-cam in the right Browser on the right OS.....
Great video and allowed me to solve my issue quickly! I needed to post some clips on social media, clips were filmed in HDR on an iphone. Social media person here, not a video editor. Thank you!
Thank you very much! Your video was very clear, and most importantly, concise. You did a great job of conveying high quality information in a simple, bare-bones way.
You could have easily charged for this amazing tutorial. Concise, great depth, and answered every question mark I have had working with mixed HDR / SDR & Photo projects. No one has addressed this topic as clearly and succinctly. It is a bit of a rabbit hole dealing with all the mixed media types and color gamuts. Appreciate the discussion of grading down and grading up.
Wow this is undoutedly the best FCP Editig Video I have seen for HDR iPhone Clips ! It has surely helped me clarify alot of confusion. I am going to watch it a few times to get a better grasp of it. Thanks so very much :)
Outstanding tutorial - thank you Mark! An object lesson on how to articulately explain a complex topic. I'm now looking forward to purchasing the next model iPhone later this year so that I can put this information to practical use. I currently have an iPhone 11 Pro Max, so don't have the HDR feature available. Thank you!
HDR may quickly become the preferred delivery format. Thank you for this. Please keep covering everything about grading and delivering HDR. EDIT: It should be noted that exporting using Compressor is only supported in Big Sur (MacOS 10.11+)
Thanks for much for this Mark; HDR WAS so confusing to me before this video. I have the 12 Pro for my personal use and the 12 Pro Max as a "video camera" because its sensor stabilization on the wide lens.
Thank you for the excellent video! Great clarity and instructive explanation! Could you tell us what to do if we have an intro that we attach to each video that was made in Apple Motion in (I assume) SDR? That is, suppose we would like to start exporting to HDR since we now ocassionally shoot on iPhone 12. Is there a way to remake (re-render) the intro in Apple Motion in HDR?
YOU SAVED MY LIFE!!!!!!! I kept transferring my Final Cut XMLs to Davinici Resolve to export. It worked but it was time consuming. Now I can shut off those premiere pro users.
What is the correct export format if I want to export an HDR project and upload it to TH-cam? Last time I tried doing that it looked all blown out like you showed earlier in the video once it was on TH-cam but not in Final Cut Pro
TH-cam supports HDR but the Browser and OS must support it as well. I demonstrated this in the Part 1 video so check that out but support is likely broader now.
@@MotionTips Yes I did watch that part 1 video, and I know back then safari did not support HDR on youtube, but chrome did then and I still got the same results. Although, I think I'll give it another go, with the settings you showed in this video and see what happens. Can I use the apple device export for youtube? I noticed the file size was much smaller
Wow! I’m new to Final Cut Pro, trying to move away from Adobe Premier and ran into this very issue. Thank you for all the information, I feel better about my decision to move to FCP. Well at least for now. 😉
Wow, life saver! Just got a new iMac, downloaded FCP and Ahh 🤯 all my clips were blown out! It’s a palava but at least there’s a solution now! Hopefully Apple will address this and do something to automate the setting during import at some point. In the meantime I wonder if some clever bod could make a ‘shortcut’ based on file types
Amazing video, thank you! Super thorough on the settings, explains why things work the way they work and mentions great keyword for further research. 👏👏👏 I have a question about the comparison between compreed vs non compressed versions at 18:28: Granted that I'm watching this through a TH-cam video, but the colors and quality look great on the compressed version even with ~7x lower data rate. Why/how there's so much difference in data rate between the export through compressor(15.6Mbit/s) vs no compressor(1.1Gbit/s)? Where this difference comes from?
You can enable DolbyVision HDR in Filmic Pro as well - gear icon > resolution. I don't. look at HDR as an "issue" but rather an opportunity. If I'm sharing video on other iOS devices I'll shoot HDR because it looks just fantastic on iPhones, iPads, and new Apple TVs.
Thanks for making a complicated subject way less difficult. Quick question....I am doing simple youtube videos on cooking and such. Should I even record in HDR and adjust? Is there any upside?
GREAT VIDEO! We are fellow TH-camrs currently filming in 4k... But looking into switching to 4K HDR (HLG DV8.4). Firstly THANK YOU for your video! I know how much effort goes into it! Almost all the questions I had about editing 4K HDR was answered throughout the video so thanks for that :) The only question I am still hunting for is: Does TH-cam pass on the 4K HEVC 10-BIT HLG Dolby Vision 8.4 to end users, who watch TH-cam on devices like the iPhone 12 onwards? or does TH-cam change some of the settings back to H.264 and Rec 709 automatically? I guess I'm trying to find out if it's worth it? I would like to future proof our videos and give our audience the best quality we can... Sorry I guess that was 3 questions! Best Regards Sailing Holly Blue ⛵️🦋
This video has helped greatly when facing my first 4K HDR project in FCPX, thanks! Only doubt that I still have is in regards to the "conversion" form SDR to HDR. While I can adjust the clips through the color board I was also considering using the HDR Tools effect and using the PQ to HLG mode. This seems to quickly upgrade the SDR clips shot with an action camera so they would match the clips coming from an iPhone 13 shot with Dolby Vision. I'm not sure if that's an acceptable method but it is a very quick fix for the SDR content.
Thank you -- very useful video. One problem that I encountered is that when I am working in a project with the Rec. 2020 HLG color space, photos in the timeline appear very dark.
@@rippleguys After trying a number of photos, it seems to be a matter not just of increasing the brightness, but also the saturation otherwise the result seems a bit washed out.
Very interesting, thanks. If, on the other hand, I wanted a PQ and not HLG encoded file as output, how should I convert in FCPX and would you suggest this conversion? Thanks
Thank you so much for all the efforts you made for this video, something I don't understand..... in the HDR project, with tone mapped function enabled, all the clips should display normally based on the brightness capability of the display,,right? then why the SDR clip become much less bright in the HDR project? is that because the tone mapped function reduce the brightness level of the SDR clip?
Tone mapping with the HDR tools effect is for mapping an HDR clip to SDR (Rec. 709) or for mapping between flavors of HDR (PG and HLG). It doesn't tone map SDR up to HDR - you have to do that manually.
Thanks and this is superbly timed, shot some video of my god-daughter's baby the other day on my iPhone and wondered how to deal with HDR so it will look good on our 4k tv.
Exactly what I was needing. Have been so confused. To put a finer point on it, if you ultimately plan on exporting the final product in rec709 (for TH-cam), do you think it's better to shoot iPhone footage in 10-bit high-def so that you have more exposure to work with during post? Or are the benefits marginal compared to the complexity associated with converting HDR content to SDR?
Thank you so much for this video! I have a question though, and can't find the answer anywhere: when I'm in a wide gamut project the HDR content looks fine, but the transitions (the ones with flares, leaves, curtains etc.) are very dull, being SDR. How can I fix this, given that I cannot modify the transitions exposure?
That's a great question I suspect many transitions will need to be updated to include HDR options. In the meantime you should be able to open most of them in Motion and create an HDR version yourself.
Thanks for sharing! I'm just a silly actor who upgraded to iPhone 14 from the iPhone XS Max, did a really demanding tape, and almost had a mini heart-attack when I uploaded to Final Cut Pro. HDR Tools effect.. would have never known!
Thank you Mark! Love the amount of detail and explanation. Extremely helpful. Just a follow up question: Would it be best to convert the library and project to HDR(HLG) and color grade the SDR clips? OR best to keep the project and library SDR and apply the HDR effect? tomato / tomahto ?
awesome video and thank you. a few questions if you don't mind. when I airdropped the video to my phone 12 pro max I noticed the temp and the tint was a bit off. the iPhone looked a little on the cyan side where my new Mac Pro is looking more on the magenta side which I intended. I have not calibrated my MacBook Pro display since I read that they come calibrated form apple and are pretty accurate. Not sure if this is true. I am wondering if this is a discrepancy between to colors of the iPhone and the MacBook Pro display or if colors for some reason shifted during the export process?
Wow Great in depth tutorial from a Master who know HDR DolbyVision in so much details, is there a similar step by step tutorial for Davinci Resolve 17 users? I have been trying editing in Resolve without much luck & wanting to do this simple way to arrange few clips shot on iPhone 13 pro Max.
Is there any advantage to shooting HDR and then converting to SDR either through Color Grading or HDR Tools? Or does it make more sense to just shoot SDR on the iPhone until Apple comes up with a way to handle HDR nativity? Thanks for sharing.
Apple has a way to handle HDR natively - by working in an HDR project in an HDR library. But if you aren't delivering in HDR, there is no reason to shoot HLG IMHO.
You saved me! I couldn’t wrap my brain around how a new iPhone video wasn’t compatible with new Apple editing software. This is why I never film on my iPhone… needlessly complicated.
This is such a useful tutorial!! Thank you! I do have a question - Why do my "fade to white" transitions now look grey? Is that a bug? Also footage I bring in from iPhone now seems incredibly dark and I have to 'push' the brightness max!? Any thought would be huge appreciated ! :)
This is all super helpful - thank you! Copying the Apple preset in Compressor works fine, but I noticed that it maxes out at 50kbps bitrate. Is there a way to create a similar profile that allows up to 85kbps (TH-cam's recommended bitrate for 4k/60fps)?
Isn't YT's preset for H.264, not HEVC? HEVC preset should work perfectly at lower bit rates. It's no higher than what the iPhone records, so what would be the advantage of doing that?
Yeah, I copied the TH-cam preset in Compressor and then modified it to be HEVC/Dolby Vision/etc., but the bitrate tops out at 50kbps. I was able to create a brand new preset and dial in the best of both, so I think I'm set. Thank you!@@rippleguys
Excellent video. Sadly, my FCPX (10.4.10, under Mojave) does not have HLG to 709 as an option (it does have HDR to 709, or HLG to PQ), so your proposed fix doesn't work for me. :/

Excellent expert tutorial - TH-cam Gold! Thanks! :)
Thank you truly appreciate it 🙌🏻
Question: Does encoder type „faster“ really only switch to hardware support without any quality loss related to „slower“ encoding type?
on my fcpx - its multiple times faster, but also MUCH worse quality unfortunately
@@klausle2592 thanks for testing. Yeah, I guess I stick to the slow encoding as well. Worth it
This is all super helpful - thank you!
Thanks a lot 🙏
Fantastic video !
