Hi Witele! Thanks for stopping by! Once you add the title/ transition/effect, with the effect highlighted, click on the “I” at the top of the inspectior and go to color space override, and change it to HLG or PQ, which ever format you are using for the project. Then you can change the luminosity for HDR. Some effects or titles may need to be saved as a “new compound clip” before you can change the color space.( right click on the clip, then click, new compound clip). I would also recommend adding effects using an adjustment layer as well, this will allow you to change the color space of the effect itself without effecting the color space of the clip.
@@witele HI Witele, so I just looked into it and you are correct. some of the transitions do not convert to HDR...but I was able to convert the Flash transition into HDR using Apple Motion. It gets to about 800 nits. Shoot me an email and I can send it to you. BroadReachPro@gmail.com
great tutorial, thanks for this! do you know if i selected Dlog-M (10bit h265) on my M2P - is that HDR? Or I should have selected the HLG and my footage will never be as good and bright as it would have been HLG in the first place? thanks!
Hi Soma, thanks for stopping by! You can pick either one. Both will work. I personally prefer to use DLog and convert it to what ever format I’m exporting to. I also think HLG is a little easier to color, requires less work to get it looking good, but I think DLog looks better. Just a personal preference though. I will be making a new video soon on this bc all the new updates allow for Dolby vision export.

However now I've a nice HDR video in my library thanks to you. I'm waiting for your next tutorial
@@84roller84 Awesome! Glad to hear it! It could be the area your in and the location of the TH-cam severs. Last year it would take YT about 12 hours to process HDR video but now it only about 2 hours in my location.
I've done everything to make this work, but TH-cam ONLY will recognize my HDR footage when i export directly from imovie on ipad. It will not display my HDR footage exported from Final Cut Pro X (EVEN THOUGH I CAN EXPORT FROM FCP AND IT LOOKS GREAT, even shows the HDR symbol on my phone when viewing it there but nope, youtube will not recognize it once uploaded)
It can take up to 3 days for TH-cam to process HDR footage. Before Covid it was much faster, less than 24hr but now it takes a long time. It also depends on resolution and length. If its showing HDR on your Apple devices, TH-cam should also show HDR after processing.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam it’s been 3 weeks lol. Can’t understand why it’s not working considering it shows up perfect hdr when playing back from camera roll on iPhone 13
I was using HLG as export before but TH-cam wouldn’t recognize the video as HDR whatsoever, even though it worked just fine on another video I uploaded to a different channel.
Hey great video! Appreciate you putting this together. I am currently trying to upload a video to TH-cam and it has processed the 4k but its still not showing any HDR options. Is it just a matter of time before the HDR is available? I don't see anything to say that TH-cam is working on processing the HDR format but this is all new to me. I used compressor in the HEVC 10 bit HLG format for what its worth. Appreciate any insight.

Hi Eithan, its a nice comprehensive video. Any ideas why HEVC export for HDR takes ages ? I am using M1 mac 16 gb and 30 sec clip takes 30-40 min to export ?
Hi and thanks for stopping by!! Yeah it takes a really long time for 10 bit HEVC even if it’s in HDR or not. If you were to use a 8bit 709 timeline it’s pretty quick. I think it’s bc the older machines are not designed for HEVC, that’s just my guess. I was told the M1 Macs are supposed to be much faster with HEVC but I guess not. You might be better off using ProRes LT.
Thanks for this! I'm editing on a 2021 MacBook Pro. My clips start blowing out at 400 nits. Any thoughts? Does PQ work well on a HDR TV with a lower peak nits value than a phone?
Thank you for your teaching. my friend. I would like to ask you a question, why after I export the HDR video and upload it to YT, the video becomes gray and the saturation is insufficient. If I watch the original video on my mobile phone or computer, there is no problem. I did not use Masterfile, I tried the compressor
Hi Kyoto! Thanks for stopping by! YT has to process the HDR version of the video so it is displayed correctly. Depending on the length and resolution of your upload, this can take some time, days even. Before the pandemic, YT would take approx 24 hours to process a HDR video. Now YT can take days to process a HDR. The last HDR test clip i uploaded last month was 4k and 3min long and it took YT 3 days to process the HDR version. Hope this helps.
Thank you for sharing. I would like to ask you a question. I want to upload an HDR video to TH-cam, 30 minutes long. The master file exceeds 150G, and the Apple format(hevc 10bits) export is about 8G, but there is some loss in image quality. Is there any other way to export HDR video and upload it to TH-cam?
Awesome, excellent explanation. Does TH-cam show an Sdr version if the viewer doesn’t have a hdr display ? Could you share your Compressor settings please ? Looking forward to Hdr workflow, iPhone 12 pro arriving soon 📱😎
Hi Jon! Thank you! Yes YouTue will display an SDR version on non HDR displays. The compressor settings are pretty easy to set up, there is a YT video showing how to do it, I will send the link. As far as the Apple 12 goes, from what I read, it sounds like you will only be able to edit HDR Dolby vision footage on the phone. I hope I’m wrong about that, but there has been no mention of air dropping to MacBook for edit in FinalCut. Being this is Apple to Apple, you would think they would make this happen. Either way this is very exciting for HDR moving forward.
Hey ethan do you know how much time can i take for a video to appear in hdr once uploaded? I have followed your steps and still dont see them in HDR its been an hour since the upload
I just got my iPhone12, as a beginner with technology, I have watched a few tutorials now and this is still frustrating as I shouldn't have to go through all these steps to fix the clips, plus I did turn off HDR and I thought I was good to go to record with no problems but it still recorded in HDR!!! Now I have to go back and do another take, I will record with my old iPhoneX or my GoPro 😤
Hey thanks for stopping by! I also made another video about HDR with the iPhone12. Check that one out and see if it helps at all. The steps are similar but a little different for the iPhone 12.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam Thank you! I still feel that I shouldn't have to go through all the steps to fix it. Did you say it in your video or perhaps another one I watched as I am confused from watching so many tutorials now, 😂 that there isn't an editor software yet that is updated for HDR, if so... why did Apple design a phone with HDR 🤦♀️
@@OUTNABOUTwithYoursTrulyLIZZOC LOL, but know it can be a bit confusing. Final Cut is pretty much updated to handle HDR content no problem. The HDR video the iPhone 12 creates is in a HLG format, which does not require any color space conversion. All you have to do is create a new library in final cut, go to library options and turn on wide gamut, the when you create a new project, select rec 2020 HLG in the color space. You can drop in the HDR clips from the iPhone and edit as normal. Let me know if your still having problems.
Just upload to TH-cam as normal. If you follow these steps in final cut, TH-cam will automatically recognize the video as HDR and process it accordingly. Lately TH-cam can take up to 24hours to process the HDR version of your video.
Excellent tutorial but I have one big confusion/problem that while exporting in fxp x when I select TH-cam/Facebook option it’s showing warning ⚠️ and even in your video it’s showing warning ⚠️ “using 8 bit codec with HDR content..... FYI my content is recorded using HLG3 Rec 2020 on Sony a7iii please guide thanks
Thanks Khorramshahr! Let’s see, make sure wide gamut is turned on under library, for project settings make sure your using Rec 2020 HLG, and for export use master file, Pro Res 422 LT or better. If you get errors it’s usually bc you still have the view set to proxy, which you will need to switch it to optimized/original. Also Final a cut may not be recognizing your Sony HLG footage as HLG so with the clip selected, click on the information tab and make sure it says HLG. If not, you will need to change the color space to HLg
Also you cannot export using the Facebook/TH-cam setting for HDR bc it will export in a H2.64 codec, which Will lot contain the correct metadata for TH-cam to recognize as HDR. Hope this helps.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam Thanks a lot for your timely and very well detailed response yes I’m exporting the Master file but for a little over 3 minutes of video the file size is almost 26GB and I’m trying to upload on TH-cam it’s been over 5 hours and it reached at 67%. @@RBAPRODUCTION your camera should have a natural, log, or HLG color profile. Or if your shooting RAW to the Ninja V the color profile does not matter. Under M1 Pro, would the video editing work for 4K Dolby Vision footages be as smooth as the editing work for normal 4K footages? I hope there is no dropping frames or any other issue during the 4K Dolby Vision video editing/playback.
Your feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your comment on this matter.
Great video dude. I watched a lot on this topic. You explain it well.
Hey I know this was posted two years ago, but it really helped me right now! I was hoping I didn’t have to get an input/output and hdr screen when my m1 pro should be able to do the same thing.
Hope you’re doing well!
Good stuff man!! Video looks amazing 😉
Nemo thanks buddy!!
how do you do with the title / effects / transition, so that they are not gray or too dark?
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam unfortunately, this technique does not work with transitions
@@witele what transitions are you using? The ones that come with Final cut or other plug ins?
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam a bit of everything, example the "flash". white is 100nits in PQ and like 50% in HLG
A BIG THANK YOU!!!
great tutorial, thanks for this! do you know if i selected Dlog-M (10bit h265) on my M2P - is that HDR? Or I should have selected the HLG and my footage will never be as good and bright as it would have been HLG in the first place? thanks!
Hi Soma, thanks for stopping by! You can pick either one. Both will work. I personally prefer to use DLog and convert it to what ever format I’m exporting to. I also think HLG is a little easier to color, requires less work to get it looking good, but I think DLog looks better. Just a personal preference though. I will be making a new video soon on this bc all the new updates allow for Dolby vision export.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam thanks Ethan, I just replicated your work steps and yeah, it is working! :) thanks a lot you made my day!

Hi RODPIKER DRONES UK! Thanks for stopping buy and that you very much!
clear and concise. you're a great teacher. thank you for sharing!
Hello and thank you for teaching me, I have a question please help me , I’ve done everything you said, even show on my clip information is HLG but when I upload on TH-cam, show it as SD not HDR, I spoke to apple support they told me my clips is HDR. Why and how can I upload HDR on TH-cam , thank you
@@dariushjokar TH-cam can take a while for them to process the HDR clip. Depending on resolution and clip duration. I have seen some of my 10 minute clips take up to 48 hours to process.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-camthank you so much
I don't think color space override works like that, but using free davinci resolve can export files in their source resolution from v-log/v-gamut to pq
Hi Ethan; first of all thank you very much for your tutorial. I'm working with an iPhone 12 as well but I found lots of problems to share my HDR videos. I've checked all the passages that you explain but in the end it doesn't works and on TH-cam I see just SDR version. I've also tried to share my videos directly form the iPhone, without any modify from the original but, in TH-cam, it works in SDR just. I'm sure my videos are in HDR. Do you've any suggestions for me? Thanks a lot.
Can you shoot me an email so I can help you further. BroadReachPro@gmail.com. I’m actually in the middle of creating a tutorial for the iPhone 12. Maybe a few days till it gets posted but I can help you directly.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam Hi Ethan there is a news: following your tutorial about FCPX and HDR videos it works! The only thing to do is to wait because YT spent lots of time to activate the HDR version of your file (I don't know if it's just for me and my bad connection). However now I've a nice HDR video in my library thanks to you. I'm waiting for your next tutorial
@@84roller84 Awesome! Glad to hear it! It could be the area your in and the location of the TH-cam severs. Last year it would take YT about 12 hours to process HDR video but now it only about 2 hours in my location.
awsome video but missing table of contents really wanted to swtich to FCPX part immedietly
any update since?
perfect tutorial
I was using HLG as export before but TH-cam wouldn’t recognize the video as HDR whatsoever, even though it worked just fine on another video I uploaded to a different channel.
you can export HEVC from quicktime
Hey great video! Appreciate you putting this together. I am currently trying to upload a video to TH-cam and it has processed the 4k but its still not showing any HDR options. Is it just a matter of time before the HDR is available? I don't see anything to say that TH-cam is working on processing the HDR format but this is all new to me. I used compressor in the HEVC 10 bit HLG format for what its worth. Appreciate any insight.
I my experience, it usually takes YT anywhere from 24-72 hours to process the HDR version of a video depending on the length.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam awesome. Thanks very much for the response. I appreciate the info a lot.
@@CanoeTheNorth Im having this same issue. Did the video process correctly? I seen elsewhere to just export in HEVC 10 bit instead of HEVC HLG I'm trying that now
@@X27921 I did eventually get everything sorted out. It can take a good 2-3 days sometimes for HDR to process. I’ve had the best luck uploading videos in pro res. Takes the longest to upload as the files are huge but the least amount of time to process the HDR. Hope that helps.
@@CanoeTheNorth For Pro Res video set project to Rendering: Apple ProRes 422 LT codec. Then when exporting use Format for Publishing to: Computer and video Codec: h.264 Best Quality to get ProRes in a smaller format and it should stay in HDR and look good as well my video took over a week to process but it did.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam thanks Ethan, btw the colour grading step in your video really helped me so many thanks for that !

brilliant video Thankyou.
Thanks for this! I'm editing on a 2021 MacBook Pro. My clips start blowing out at 400 nits. Any thoughts? Does PQ work well on a HDR TV with a lower peak nits value than a phone?

finally, a video about exporting HDR to youtube thats ACTUALLY IN HDR! 🤣
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam thank you ❤️
Thank you for sharing.
It can take up to 2 days depending on how long your video is. Before Covid hit YT would take about 24 hours but now its much longer.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam your knowledge is very well appreciated! 🙏

You saved my day man. Great video!
but how do we upload it to youtube in HDR???
Yes my library is Wide gamut and project is rec 2020 PQ and I have subscribed and liked your channel 😊
@@khurrammalik5865 another option is to use compressor and export in h.265 but unfortunately at this time exporting 10bit HDR takes hours but it will be a much smaller files in the end which can upload much faster. Hi there,
Amazing job you did for the community….
I was struggling with adobe….
So since I have seen your video, I’m back to fcpx, my question is :
Can I obtain an HDR video from a recording in ProRes 422hq 1080p60fps ?
By using your method ?
In advance thanks
Yes but it would also have to be Log or HLG.
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam well, sorry to bother you,
English is not my mother language,
So what do you mean by to be log or hlg ?
I should probably tell you that I’m trying to get the files out in ProRes, out of my ninja atomos cast ….
That is why, I found out your video great about HDR
@@RBAPRODUCTION your camera should have a natural, log, or HLG color profile. Or if your shooting RAW to the Ninja V the color profile does not matter. Log and HLG will give you the most latitude with color when creating HDR content. ProRes is a type of codec, not color profile. You can use ProRes if you want, very good choice, but use the correct color profile is more important. What camera are you using?
@@EthanMitchell_TH-cam thanks for this clear answer, that make completely sense,
I’m using the Sony FX3, the A7s2,
But by what you said how about the HDMI arriving from my graphic card computer ?
( where it’s connected to my ninja cast to record also the screen computer)
Sorry if sounds dummy question….
@@RBAPRODUCTION both those cameras have Slog, which is Sony’s log and they both should have HLG. I assume you mean the display elements like shutter speed and ISO graphics are showing up on the Ninja? If that is the case, your camera should have an option for a “clean” HDMI out. It will be in the settings of the camera.
Excellent tutorial Ethan, thank you very much! One question, what setup did you use to screen record your fcpx edit in hdr too? So not only the footage from your camera which was obviously shot in hlg but it looks like also your Mac screen recording was done in a way that allowed you to then publish it as hdr on TH-cam.
Hi Alin, thanks for stopping by! I used the built in QuickTime screen recorder and converted it to rec 2020 HLG in final Cut using Color Space override. I also made a video follow up video using the iphone 12 pro max if your interested. th-cam.com/video/cVPeLCj-E80/w-d-xo.html

Looks rather complicated, but I will have to try this stuff. I notice that my Parrot Anafi does HDR video, but it doesn't look right after processing.
High Paul! Thanks for stopping by! Unfortunately the HDR feature on the Anafi is not “True” HDR. It’s an effect to get more dynamic range out of the sensor. Same with the Mavic Air 2, Gopros, Insta360 One R, DJI Osmo action, Skydio 2....etc. You need to shoot in 10 bit color, with Log, HLG, PQ, or Raw.
BUT.....I am experimenting with the Anafi’s PLOG to see how it does when stretched into HDR.
