  • In this video I take a look at the acoustic performance of my latest scratch built PC. Is it quieter than a heartbeat? Let's find out!
    Musicians and video editors would appreciate a PC like this I reckon.

      +DIY Perks I believe another channel (or you... I have bad memory as to who it was) actually went and got the dBa of their computer measured in a quiet room. Apparently they were good, but not "that" good as there was electrical noise which could be measured pretty well (still virtually inaudible though if you ask me). (I think it may have been either linus or jayz as I watch those channels regularly as well). Huge fan of this build though, wish I could order one or knew how to "DIY" well enough to not waste countless hours on a half finished project (I am pretty sure I will give up when I'm about 200 hours in and finally managed to bend the aluminum sheet right)

    It's funny how you have all of these huge company's. Asus, gigabyte, corsair, coolermaster etc all spending huge amounts of money to make fans and coolers work with less noise and this guy has surpassed all of it in his own home. I know they have specifications to meet like graphics cards have a limit to shape and size etc but this is still absolutely amazing! Great job!

      But manufacturers of hardware have regulations to adhere to, with regards to electromagnetic interference and such. Using a "open" PSU design like this, wouldn't satisfy the regulations for electrical safety for example. But keeping in mind, that in my custom watercooled gaming system, the PSU fan actually never runs, because it doesn't get hot enough (Corsair RM1000i unit), then certainly some manufacturers do some things right. Hardware design isn't simply about function over form, as is the case with this PC enclosure. The "cool factor" of how it looks, how easy it is to work with, ability to fit many different hardware combinations, are all things that are very important when designing consumer goods. As soon as you only need to make a computer enclosure to fit one single configuration, that doesn't need to be upgradeable, well then making something that is essentially silent, suddenly becomes a whole lot easier.

      There are system building companies that specialize in silent PCs. Some of them have models without any moving parts, but they'll charge you an arm and a leg.
      If you just want a silent workstation, you can probably figure something out with just an android smartphone, an MHL cable, and some bluetooth peripherals.

    Since I generally play with headphones on, a totally silent computer isn't a priority, but performance is. It's really cool that you can have the fans at such a low speed to keep it cool enough to perform, but my question is if you increase the fan speed to a higher level and forcibly make things even cooler at the risk of a slightly louder computing, would your performance be even better than previously? I'd love to see a proper performance test of your computer running in "Silent mode" vs your computer running on a higher fan speed with cooler temps.

    • @DIYPerks
      @DIYPerks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      If by performance you mean lower temps, yeah, that'd probably happen with higher fan speeds. You won't see any faster framerates or renders though, because the components are kept cool enough anyway to avoid thermal throttling. That was the whole idea with the design. :)

    This desktop PC is amazing! It's quiter than my cat!!
    But i don't like the backup system that you activate with the button on the top.
    I mean, It's a great idea, but i think that a button that is directly linked to the power supply is dangerous for the disk.
    If it is "backupping" something (writing/reading some data) and you accidentally press the button, the disk will immediatly shut down.
    In many cases it means loss of a lot of data and sometimes even the breaking of the entire disk. I speak from a personal experience :)
    However this is a enviable PC! 😁

    • @DIYPerks
      @DIYPerks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Michele Favaretto Glad you like the PC! Hard disks have what's called 'disk cache'. What happens is that, if the disk looses power whilst it's still writing data, it writes what's left in the cache to the platters whilst they spin down. The idea is to prevent data loss in the event of a power failure etc.Also, when you shut down a PC, the disk doesn't have an 'off' mode - the PSU simply shuts off and the disk looses power, just like what's happening when the backup button is turned off. Been using it for a while and it's been working fine, so I don't think there's too much to worry about :)

    • @DIYPerks
      @DIYPerks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Danielle Lowe
      We'll have to agree to disagree here Danielle. Using a power button for the HDD is no more going to damage it than shutting down a computer does, or unplugging an external HDD etc. IE, it doesn't damage it.
      Part of my wanting to have the HDD disconnected from the PSU when not actually backing up is that, if for some reason a PSU dies, it can take out all components attached to it. Having it unplugged unless actually backing up adds yet another layer of protection.

    • @portentouslad5051
      @portentouslad5051 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michele Favaretto Danielle Lowe
      Do you actually think hard drive manufacturers haven't thought of that? the drive will always slowdown and retract the retention arm before shutting down and no cutting the power doesn't effect that, because again they will have thought of that.
      As for shutting it down during writes without unmounting it that can only corrupt files on the drive same with usb-drives, but that's due to FAT and ntfs' lack of journalling and just btw windows has a "build"-in safety for that as well.
      But yeah my point being, there's not shut down mechanism in hard drives they are meant to plug and play today.
      @ "off" feature that's meant to turn of the power to safe energy consumption windows does that automatically on secondary drive as well and "its why when installing updates you see it hover at certain % before shutting down and re-booting" where on earth did you hear that?
      So called Green drives like the ones from WD are simply more energy efficient and run at lower spinning speeds that about it.

    • @vedrandobos2755
      @vedrandobos2755 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DIY Perks Hi Matt. Congrats on this build :)
      The best approach here (if you haven't already done that) is to get in the BIOS (from experience, latest ASUS BIOS'es do have that option) and setup the port this drive is connected to as a "Removable drive". That way you get a quick remove option in the tray for this particular drive. After selecting the option to disconnect it, the cache is flushed, the drive will indeed spin down and power off. It is 100% safe to disconnect the power supply after that.
      I will indeed try your approach at a custom case at one point, it is just too tempting :)

    Why ON EARTH wouldn't you use the NT1-A for the Narration?

    • @DIYPerks
      @DIYPerks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The Dark One Because the little narration mic sounds almost as good, and fits my voice. That said, I've since started using the NT1-A, as it does offer smoother reproduction. Only 1% of viewers might notice the change, however.
