Mad engineer here: I did the same layout years ago but without using motherboard risers, by directly screwing mobo into .3 mm thinner mdf board. With that said, thanks for the video, the virtual ground circuit was something I never thought of! Viva la DIY Perks!
BTW, I came out with another solution for the audio in time: Instead of using the usb virtual ground circuit, I used no amplifier, and used best sounding speakers with a conic enhancer, while using Debian Linux with 200% audio output, which was audible, considering the system had only 1 x 140mm fan.
If you want to take the power button problem a step further, you can use a multimeter to find what pins are used for the button on the keyboard and the resistance if needed then (carefully) solder a button to the respecting pins with the corresponding resistance (if it uses resistance for identifying keys).
There's kind of a big problem with this. BIOS settings can get reset to defaults for various reasons (dead battery, BIOS upgrade, BIOS can enter failsafe mode if there is hardware issues, user changing the settings, etc...). If the power or screen settings change it would effectively brick the entire system unless you plug the original keyboard back in. Would have been interesting to look at the keyboard connector or any microchip on it and try to just solder switches for the screen/power. Could also have done some others like volume. Also you would have made the system totally portable. At the very least I would hide the keyboard inside the backpanel for emergency maintenance (otherwise it will get lost).
@@NathanielMartin-wf9hfbro he means the power button on the original keyboard. The usb keyboard won't have the original power button for turning on the pc. you are a genius brother! Not only is leaving the batery installed good for portability but it also is good incase a power outage! You have already solved two issues right there and that was a smart choice. Another dope thing about this upcycled design is the fact your machine will breathe better mounted this way.
Why do I get the feeling that the Hubble telescope... the Large Hadron Collider... and IBM's Watson are all actually just old laptops and nick nacks that Matt has repurposed...
It is funny how this comment is not that far from truth. In practical application of technology, stripping down computers and components assembled by other manufacturers is sometimes just more practical and is used all over the place. Chances are, most of the people watching used one of repurposed machines like that themselves, they just didnt realize it. I have seen things like that attached to display terminals in public a lot. And when it comes to ISS if something breaks they fix or repurpose it a lot. It is specially common in countries that border first world countries but are not ones themselves. In first world countries like US people trow out perfectly usable tech, so people just take all that stuff for cheap, move it to poorer countries, re-purpose it and sell it. It is very common for countries in Asia or eastern europe.
@@arigoru7018 Furthermore, space application hardware are almost exclusively ex-generation tech, as their noise resistance characteristic is better understand compare to current gen (and also better overall). Good Job! One thing makes it easier: Instead of using a shorting switch and the usb Relay Power circuit, you just can take a release-button. the power supply is connected everytime, even after shutdown. wehn you press the release button it triggers a signal when it goes back to connect the circuit and system starts ;) no need for usb relay
Or you could get the same laptop with a dead motherboard for 1/3 of the price of this project and deal with 2 possible sources of e-waste. It is much easier, cheaper, better for environment and less stupid than this project.
awesome! did this with a broken windows tablet. soldered a spare laptop fan to minimize throttling, removed the display and attached the whole thing with doble sided tape to the monitor. It honestly turned out to be really good for web browsing. Thanks for the inspiration!
I've got heaps of faulty old laptops lying about. One of which has issues with its display circuit; it doesn't show a picture on the internal screen but the HDMI port works fine. This is a fantastic idea and if I was to build one, I'd have a working device. Very neat!
I'm going to need to watch this on my nice display. Edit: And now I'm going to have to build a laptop onto my nice display. But I'm going to need an extra warped laptop PCB to go with my curved monitor.
Look at some of the ultra-portables out there. Some use a set of very small boards connected by ribbon cables, so you could effectively 'bend' the system around the curve. I'm sure there's a broken ultra-portable for cheap out there, somewhere.
I swear this guy keeps impressing me with his engineering skills even though I'm pretty good at repairing electronic devices or upgrading them but doing my own DIY that's where I seriously lack in that area that takes time that I don't have😢 so I made it easy on myself I bought a 2020 HP pavilion all in one Windows 10 desktop I can also use a external GPU for gaming because it has a built-in USB-C thunderbolt port which is required in order to use a external GPU
I always watch the sponsored part of videos that have them; I'm too frickin lazy to skip ahead lol. Plus when you have commercials like John Lovell's of Warrior Poet Society, they're just as good as the regular content. 👌

I can give this video a 9.9 out of 10 because there was 1 factor that I've discovered that may be seem trivial. Laptop batteries eventually won't be able to hold a charge. So if anything depends on that battery separately it will eventually stop. As long as it's plugged in though all functions should be fine because it's getting it's power from there.
No, next video he shows you how to take a tower and mount its components on the wall in a way that can be used not only as a computer but as a lamp and fancy art work as well
Usually, monitors with vesa mounting on it's back are not super slim like the one in the vid, and since looks was the main concern here, a monitor with vesa mount would have ended up being too bulky
I did something similar when my Toshiba laptop stopped working a few years ago, but since my screen wasn't totally unusable I just changed the settings of display preference while booting to VGA first, then disconnected the laptop's display and connected the VGA to an old monitor I had, it saved me from buying a new one for at least 3 years haha, this channel is so good!.

Remember that laptop cases are designed around the cooling fan. Do *NOT* simply build a closed case with a few holes around the fan, make sure that you put vent holes where the original case had it's holes. Also: heatpipes *ARE* sensitive to orientation so if you put your board in upside down, you may lose a significant amount of cooling capacity (laptops are designed to be operated on a flat surface or, drumroll, on your lap, tha angle is not supposed to exceed 45 degrees or so.
if you aren't concerned about slim design, it's easier to just mount a CPU cooler and upgrade the thermal paste solution. Laptop TDPs are tiny and something like an intel stock cooler which costs next to nothing will likely be cheaper and as good if not better than the laptop cooling solution
This is awesome. I've had my old laptop sitting in my closet for over a year now because I broke the screen and it's a Samsung with pen support so replacing the screen is super expensive. It has an i7 and pretty decent specs. Will be attempting this.
Hi, I gave this a try. My laptop was fairly new, unfortunately had broken hinges and costs a lot to repair. I am in the process of making a compartment for it.
Sorry I didn't see these replies. I have successfully taken apart all the electronics out of the casing. I ran some tests to see everything works fine just like in the video. Instead of building a compartment and also mounting the old laptop screen to essentially make a monitor. I just hooked up the electronics to an old tv with hdmi cable.
Excellent video! You really have a wonderful vision for design. The only thing I would have done differently is paint the aluminium panel black, thereby highlighting the wood trim even more.
I for one would LOVE to see a tower build approach to this sort of project, perhaps building the tower out of cherry or oak repurposed from otherwise unsalvageable furniture or kitchen/coffee tables, dresser drawer sets, etc. Another possibility could be to build the computer into that slim drawer that workstations always seem to have under the working surface, or just create one there.

you could just solder a wire to a ground and a wire to the power button pin on the keyboard socket on the board, so you can keep the original power button, the work is to found out what pin got the power button signal, just look for the higest volt on the socket, or try look for continuity on the kb flex when you push the button, is the one who goes to ground when u push it, i have made it before with broken keyboard laptops and it works great

Why do I get the feeling that the Hubble telescope... the Large Hadron Collider... and IBM's Watson are all actually just old laptops and nick nacks that Matt has repurposed...
to be fair hubble is damn old
It is funny how this comment is not that far from truth.

I can give this video a 9.9 out of 10 because there was 1 factor that I've discovered that may be seem trivial. Laptop batteries eventually won't be able to hold a charge. So if anything depends on that battery separately it will eventually stop. As long as it's plugged in though all functions should be fine because it's getting it's power from there.

instead of epoxy - use a monitor with a VESA mount and drill holes in the backplate and use screw it on the monitor

Sorry I didn't see these replies. I have successfully taken apart all the electronics out of the casing. I ran some tests to see everything works fine just like in the video. I am planning to make a monitor with the laptop electronics mounted behind it soon. Cannot now since university started again haha. Too busy.
