Where I live, get a Bushman Monopod it's almost impossible (and price is quite high), same for a lot of others monopods that were recommended on various TH-cam videos. So I got a Theta Z1 (700 euro used on Amazon Warehouse and it's like new!) and paired it with an
iFootage Cobra 2 Strike II. Love it so far, because is a strong, heavy monopod with an amazing release mechanism, but yes, it's quite "thic" and has a big head like a tripod. For Matterport it makes absoutely no difference at all (cause Matterport create a very big blurred nadir) but for others Virtual Tours software and stand alone shooting, the head it's visible, but it perfectly hides the feet of the monopod :D. Thanks for these vids Ben, you're helping me a lot!
P.S. Theta Z1 has the awesome dual fisheye plugin that work like a charm! Of course not usable with Matterport (I hope matterport will improve their HDR algorithm) but for stand alone pics it's amazing!
P.P.S. Do you have any recommendation for an hand held stick for the Z1? Thank you!

    Is the insta 360 sufficient?

Loved the 360 comparisons you've posted. In this tour, you say dial in your settings, move room to room and one minute per shot and you're done quickly. Are you shooting auto settings on the X for example? I'm still stuck in the 360 Theta V and need to upgrade. I end up adjusting exposure and ISO in every room, keeping ISO low. Is the X better in auto mode than the Theta V, which I still have to use EV with noise reduction option?

Inbuilt HDR is the best option with the X. I’ll be releasing a video today covering the best workflows for it 👍

Does the likes of an iPhone 13/14pro and the insta360 flow result in better images for virtual tours than a 360 camera? Just a thought, as multiple 4k images stitched has got to be better than one at a total of 5.6 or 8K? Certainly wouldn’t look as professional though and I assume exposure difference become an issue?

The only thing missing was if there are free platforms for footage.

Not sure what you mean by that. Virtual tours are nothing to do with ‘footage’.

Please explain Photoshop discontinuing 3D? I still see it in my current version and the article you referenced is almost a year old and talks about next gen 3D. Are we doomed?

    • @BenClaremont

Hi Paul- unless you haven’t updated in a while, 3D mode is too glitchy and unreliable for 360 editing now. I covered this in my video a few months ago ‘the new best 360 photo editing workflow’ 👍

The ending sentence that had typed early this am or last night was "about hope everybody is fine with the comment that every country has its defense." So got to thinking that I should of explained my comment pertaining to what I had really meant.

Serious customers are still in demand for using DSLR cameras. I can't imagine using a "snap camera" in my gothic architecture project or when I am documenting subterranean caves or mines. I was pioneering VR journalism at the end of 90-is and of 2000 and my DSLS output quality was much better than nowadays Theta Z1 or new Insta. Even my 360 surround videos from 2005 which were made with the attached mirror to video camera were in a range of nowadays low budged 360 "snap" cameras (bellow 2000€). The same is with my geographic work documenting the thru-hike trails - 300+ km long... there is no such "snap" camera to do that so fast and with such quality. Snap 360° cameras are fine for touristic and personal use not professional work... maybe only for very low-budged clients or naive ones. I am with VRP (virtual reality panoramas - as it was an old term) - surround photography for over 29 years. Made in Slovenia/ Europe.

Hi Moja, it sounds like you have worked on some fantastic projects and I tip my hat to you for that. And I agree that using a DSLR is the best method to capture 360 panoramas, especially for bigger clients. However I disagree that 360 cameras should not be used professionally or only for naive clients. Not all businesses can afford it or need a DSLR, and the majority of virtual tours right now are for these smaller clients like real estate, small businesses etc. 360 cameras produce a great, quick & affordable result for them and these clients are more than happy. There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution, not yours, nor mine.

@@BenClaremont I use one-shot 360 cameras where needed. Example inside small models, bird nests, apiary and similar or documenting war zones e.t.c... but the problem is that I am inside the image, the example I started the City view project (1993) and was documenting the mountain trails and streets of towns. High skill of "from the hand shooting" was needed at that time. I made a rig for three DSLR cameras in 2001 and the quality was great but was a problem that that rig needed to be above my head - me in the nadir, same is today with one-shot cameras. Indeed are great for someone who wants to be only creative but is not willing to invest time to learn about photography. when I am documenting the e.g. mountain trail the workflow with DSLR and the monopod is much faster than Theta Z1 and the final image is 25Kx12.5K, which is 16x times more resolution. I am getting older and alpine climbing became harder for me with a 25 Kg backpack (sleeping system, tent, water supply...and equipment).
Sure shot cameras are fine for locations which are no historical value like you mentioned real estate, hotels,...
I found a great value in 360 surround video cameras for documenting the bike trails and then using them as an addition to the room -the gym bike system. I did most of such tours in time from 2014-16... over 1000 km and were used in gyms, but more as the promotion as in that time the HMD sets were heavy and people were sweating...but my idea remains and I believe will blossom when the super light HMDs will come.
