@BCstuntsandcomedy - I don't know what bike you have, but if you have a wr like in the video, the other drain is for the oil reservoir (The older WR's stored the oil in the frame). This is called a dry-sump sysstem. it is also motor oil that circulates through the motor. the oil is always flowing from the reservoir to the engine and back. You need to drain both, otherwise you will be mixing your new oil with the old oil.
I would highly recommend investing in a service manual for any future work because you need it for volume specs and torque specs... the oil specs for your 09 YZ250F are 1.05L without the filter removed and 1.15L with the filter removed. As for the oil there are tons of different oils out there and a lot of it is personal preference so it depends on what has been ran in the bike and what you want to run. Whether it be a full synthetic or just an all purpose or semisynthetic oil it's up to you
@samkirka - your oil pump puts it back in the tank. This is a "dry sump" oiling system. Most the oil is stored in the tank while the bike is running. Drain in 2 places, but only add oil to one.
First it's going to depend on if you have the F model or the R model. Honda's website says for the "F" model the motor oil capacity is 1 liter or 1.1 US Quarts. For the "R" model Honda's OE website says the motor oil capacity is .5 liters or .59 US quarts and those are with removing and changing the oil filter as well but I would highly recommend you invest in a service manual to double check those specifications and to help with the procedures and tightening torques of the drain bolt
If it's cutting out you may have a jetting issue or a dirty carburetor but you can try increasing the idle by turning the idle up. It is a little knob on the left side of your carburetor. That will adjust your idle up and down
Alright I would recommend investing in a service manual for any future work because you need it for volume specs and torque specs... but the oil specs for your 09 YZ250F are 1.05L without the filter removed and 1.15L with the filter removed. As for the oil there are tons of different oils out there and a lot of it is personal preference so it depends on what has been ran in the bike and what you want to run. Whether it be a full synthetic or just an all purpose or semisynthetic
Well, start loving me! the forks we do in our "cartridge fork" video is practically identical! They are forks off a 2004 YZ, which is basically the same fork the WR's still have.
You will be fine running whatever motorcycle oil you want in your machine (assuming you are referring to a motorcycle). API which stands for American Petroleum Industry have developed rating which basically range from the beginning of the alphabet up to SM which is the highest oil rating right now so as long as you have an oil that fits between SG - SM ratings you'll be fine. If you like the oil that has been ran in your bike it wouldn't be a bad idea to ask what the shop has been putting in it.
Somewhere around 10-15 hours so yeah basically if you are riding the bike often you are going to want to change the oil often, same as any bike. You'll have to be more specific about which type of riding you plan on doing. 6-8 hours of riding everyday is a lot of riding but if you plan on riding on and off road and also jumps, single track and all around riding yeah the WR250F would be a great bike. Any bike that's well maintained is going to be able to go that long without receiving damage.
- it depends on the year. they have changed slightly from year to year. I highly suggest getting a manual (for many reasons)! We well OE manuals and Clymer manuals for most machines.
- i don't really understand what it is doing, but if you think is has too much, drain it and check it. The WR250f in this video takes 1000ml of oil and 1100 with the filter change.
@alanmorfin - your manual will specify the types of motor oil. As long as it is made for motorcycles specifically you will be fine. I have known plenty of people that have run car motor oil with no problems, but they may not be as good on motorcycle clutches.
Okay, I have a 2011 YZ250F. Had 49.5hrs on the rebuilt engine when I bought it (now has 83.4). Every time I've changed the oil (every 8-10hrs), I have never had any oil come out of the oil reservoir. Just this past weekend, I noticed that the oil reservoir breather hose was off. I took it off and noticed it was heavily clogged (as well as the screen in the reservoir. I cleaned everything, and when I went to put it back together, the spout that comes off of the engine that the breather hose is attached to, was clogged full of a hardened white substance. The actual oil lines that go to the reservoir on both sides, have seem to have some sort of metal plug in them, intentionally placed there. The bike runs amazing, just had the valves adjusted by the local shop, they said everything looked okay (about two months ago). bottom line is, oil isn't getting to the reservoir, and I want to know how this is effecting my bike. Love you guy website, have ordered all my parts and gear from you. If you could offer some insight I'd appreciate it.
Taylor Chapman I'd have you clear that hose out that's clogged up for sure. The cause of it i'm not really sure? But you would want to get it fixed and diagnosed by a mechanic. It shouldn't be clogging up like that on you. Let us know if there's anything else we can help ya out on. Thanks for watching.
I am not sure what "float" you are refering to. If you are talking about the little sight window, that is more helpful after the bike has been running and the oil is circulated. Just put in the recomended volume and you will be OK. The owner/service manual the bike came with is excellent. Yamahas come will great manuals. If you don't have it, we stock them. Check out our website.
It sounds to me like when you reattached the oil line the o-ring somehow got smashed, ripped or damaged. I would take it back off and inspect the o-ring or crush washer or whatever is used to seal the connection. You may just have to replace the o-ring.
You'll be just fine running that oil in your new bike. Just be sure to follow along with your service manual for recommendations and specs for what weight and oil you should run and you'll be just fine. Let us know if you run into any other questions
I did everything shown. I have the aluminum frame, but when I go to refill with oil, I get about 1/2qt in and the level is already past the sight glass. Should it be past it?
Hey- I have a 2007 YZ250F- How much oil should I put in according to the specs? Changing filter and flushing & draining as much old oil out as I can.. Thanks good video.
Thanks for that. I wasnt too sure about leaving tank air bleed open while refilling and start up to get the oil to refill the tank. But you answered that.. Cheers.
- Hi. yes, you want to keep the screen. It will catch any trash and keep it from getting stuck somewhere else. you will need to buy the part from a Yamaha dealer. The part # is 5BE-21756-00-00. I would love to sell you the part, but we can't sell OE parts outside the USA. thanks!
Fantastic video cheers! could you tell me what year model this bike is and how much oil i'll need for a 2008 model. Would you also happen to know the type and volume of oil required for the front forks as i need to change the seals. Thanks very much in advance!
Hey man great video! i just have one question about the oil strainer. When i pulled my strainer out it was all messed up! it has a huge tear in the middle of it and its falling apart, you video shows the same one i have, but when i look online they show a different style of strainer, could you point me to right website that sells the same one in your video?
Hello, first off I would like to thank you all for the killer videos and amazing prices! Secondly, I have a quick question. I just upgraded from my YZ250F to an 09 YZ450F that has in the low 20's on the hour meter. I bought it from the guy but he told me the valves haven't been adjusted. I was hesitant at first but he told me the bike hasn't been ridden hard and he was selling it because it was just simply too much bike for him. If the bike was ridden very gently (condition of the bike proves it was ridden easy and was well maintained) With this information when do you think the valves should be adjusted? Thank you very much!
On my 08 yz250f in the manual it just says check the engine oil, but it doesnt have a dipstick, do you just refer to the window? if so the window is full after running it
I have a 2007 yz 250f with only a site glass and have no idea the proper amount of oil, site glass fills mediately, aint rite, it has a oil cooler so it must take at least a full liter or more, any help ?
Hey, just bought a used Yz 250 F 2009 model without the instruction manual and everything, and i am thinking of changing oil and filter :) How many liters should i fill and what kind of oil should i use ? :)
I have a 2012 yz250f I thought you should fill oil up until the float is halfway up???? so does that mean I need to fill it up until float is all way up???? ALSO I need a service manual hard to find on the internet!! thanks!!
I have a question I don't have the manual yet just got the bike and I don't know how much to put in it I was wondering if you could direct me in the right way of How much?
jamen brooks Negative. Your motor oil lubricates both your top end and bottom end. Let us know if you have any other questions, thans for checking out our video!
I use to have my local dirt bike shop change my oil but I want to try and do it myself this year. I looked at my manual but I still have a few questions. I am not sure whether to use all purpose, semi-synth, or synthetic (I don't know what the shop used in the past). Does it matter since I will be draining out the old oil? It also says use API service SG type or higher. As you go through the alphabet is that what they mean by "higher?"
I have a question, i unbolted my oilfilter cap, when i took it off the filter fell out and in the oilfilter house was a spring, but i have no idea how it is supposed to go back in can u help me?
What about for a 02 YZ250F? manual says i put 1 liter without oil filter change do i put that much? also does it damage the bike if i change the oil without changing the oil filter?
NoDoubtGaming If you do your oil filter changes pretty regularly i'd say you'd be ok. But if you are running a different motor oil for this oil change, i'd tell you to replace it. And yes, i would follow your service manual for the oil capacity.
I have a Vento v-thunder 250 and I don't have the service manual. Where do I get it? because it's way too hard to find. Also, I would like to know how to change the oil properly because I've been using 10 different tools to get the bolt out, but first a bit of chassis tube is a bit in the middle and second, the bolt is either solded because of the heat or its way too tight. please help. thanks!
I dont have yamalube where I live. Wich other oils can I use? Does it has to be sintetic oil? The most available option I have is MOTUL brand. What specs should I be concerned of when I buy oil. My bike its a YZ250f. I hope you can help me. Thanx!
hi eric i need help mate! i have a wr400 2002, (steel frame) i did and oil change on it today, the screen (mesh) you mentioned in your video thats attached to the oil pipe, its attatched to the nut (normally) well its somehow come off and was loose inside the frame, i managed to get it out 2 hours later after alot of fiddling about, Anyway i cant seem to find a new one anywhere, is that the correct name for it (screen)? do i really need the screen? does it do an important job?? PLEASE HELP!!
this has nothing to do with the vid but what do i do when i pop a wheelie and my foorks make a thump nois like i bottomed out but it makes that noise when it comes off the ground ??
@rmatvmc i have a question, on my 02 wr250f to get my oil filter screen off i need a 24mm socket. I've used a 1/2 inch drive, i cant get it to budge. The only other option is to ugga dugga, but i dont wanna break anything.. any recommendations?
@rmatvmc I used a few different methods. Thankfully, the impact gun I have has multiple settings, I got brave put it on the lower setting and slowly popped the trigger.. I was about to stop when the socket spun. I checked the threads and looks all good.. got lucky..
@rmatvmc thank you, and I appreciate you taking time to respond.. you guys are awesome. Not just the mechanic videos but the site for buying parts as well. Much respect!!
hey ive had my 2007 yz250f now for about a month and im used to two strokes haha but i was wanting to know if it smokes a little bit is that ok it does have an fmf powerbomb on it and has not been rejetted but i ride the crap out of it and it still starts up ok and runs good but smokes when i get on the gas and start up
Do you know how much oil an 05 yamaha wr250f takes? really want to change the oil but since i dont have a manual im not sure how much to put or how much it takes?
Hi I have a yamaha yzf 250 2013 I hava a fully syntetic 15 w 50 yamalube. How much do I give it engine oil ? And how to check how much need to be and there is in the bike
Jason Grima I would recommend investing in a service manual for steps on first checking your oil level and second how to properly change the oil along with how much oil you need to add back in.
hi, i removed the oil line on my 08 yz250f to clean the oil screen and when i put it back on and tightened it up. when i started the bike oil started leaking out of where the oil line goes onto the engine, it did this after the bike had been running for about 5-10 seconds. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Would anyone know the specifications of the bolt for the bikes that have to steel frame. Im looking for just that one bolt on the front of the frame mid level that drains the oil... Like an idiot I snapped the head right off the bolt. Thanks ! I have a 2002 wr250f
I cant find the first drain bolt on my 2003 wr250f (steel frame) . My manual says to remove oil tank cap, then remove oil filler cap, then remove "frame oil drain bolt"....then remove "crankcase oil drainbolt" and finally "oil filler element drain bolt". in this video, was the first drain bolt you removed the "crankcase oil drain bolt"? this is my first oil change ever so i am nervous..i have never changed oil on anything before.. my manual says the "crankcase oil drain bolt" is on the LEFT side of my bike...i am so confused. please help.
+Jordan Arizona Hi. So your manual is correct. Your crankcase oil drain bolt is on the LEFT side under the ignition cover and a little to the right. In this video the first drain bolt we drain is the crankcase oil drain bolt. Remember to follow or refer to your service manual. Remember to remove your oil filler cap on the left crankcase cover to help drain the oil better. Up on the frame by the steering column and handlebars is your oil level dipstick, remove that for better oil flow when you drain the oil from the frame. "frame oil drain bolt". Then you can undo the hose clamp that is attatched to the oil strainer, that is threaded up into the bottome of the frame. You mention where is the "oil filler element drain bolt"? This is located at the bottom bolt on your oil filter cover and is usually identified by an "allen head bolt". Let us know if you have any questions on the job!
Rocky Mountain ATV MC AWESOME!!!!! thanks guys!!! finished the oil change and everything is perfect!!!! Thanks so much RockyMountainATVMC. so glad you guys are on youtube and are so helpful! (PS: i buy from RMATVMC.com all the time!!) cheers!!!
I believe the part number you're looking for is 5XC-13464-20-00. But to be sure you have the correct part for your bike I would suggest going to the OEM parts finder ( www.rockymountainatvmc.com/oem-parts/Yamaha ), entering your bike model, and checking in the "Oil Pump" schematic for the hose you're referring to.
@BCstuntsandcomedy - I don't know what bike you have, but if you have a wr like in the video, the other drain is for the oil reservoir (The older WR's stored the oil in the frame). the threads are stripped out. You will need a thread repair kit. Check out the tusk thread repair kits on our site.

Do you know how much oil a yz250f requires after all this done to it...?
If it's cutting out you may have a jetting issue or a dirty carburetor but you can try increasing the idle by turning the idle up. It is a little knob on the left side of your carburetor. That will adjust your idle up and down

@littleseanx - actually most new ones have more than one bolt.

@BCstuntsandcomedy - Assuming you have a 2008 WR250f - It takes 1100 ML without a filter change and 1200 with a filter change.
@iRSandCod - It depends on the rides and how hard it is ridden I suppose. I change mine every3-4 rides. Refer to your manual.
- it depends on the year. they have changed slightly from year to year. I highly suggest getting a manual (for many reasons)! We well OE manuals and Clymer manuals for most machines.
steel framed WR and YZ's have a screen in the frame where the oil is stored.
- Did you look on our site. We have the OE manual in stock.
For your 07 it should be 1.05 L without changing the filter and 1.15 L with a new filter
- What size?? I don't know the dimensions, but you can call or go on our site to find several specific for your machine.
Okay, I have a 2011 YZ250F. Had 49.5hrs on the rebuilt engine when I bought it (now has 83.4). Every time I've changed the oil (every 8-10hrs), I have never had any oil come out of the oil reservoir.
Just put in the recomended volume and you will be OK.

correct! It is seperate on other bikes like the CRF250 and 450.
@ben1996ful - they are not reusable. Reusable filters do not filter as good as the disposable paper filters.
Thank you as this is the most detailed and correct way to change oil , helped me to check everything needed . Well done
@jesserodriguez73 - what bike? i would be concerned the damping rods (if it has them) aren't hooked up inside.
It's recommended that you change the oil and filter every 3-5 rides or so
It sounds to me like when you reattached the oil line the o-ring somehow got smashed, ripped or damaged. I would take it back off and inspect the o-ring or crush washer or whatever is used to seal the connection. You may just have to replace the o-ring.
GREAT VIDEO! i did my oil change yesterday, it helped me a lot! all looks easy after view this video. thx seeya!
alex1991dh Sweet man, thats what we like to hear! Thanks for watching
That bike is simple. Remove the drain bolt, let all the oil out, and add oil back in. No oil filter or anything.
It's going to depend on what year your bike is
hey do you guys think you can show a video on cleaning the oil screen? that would help alot of people
@yamahathumperwr250f - glad to hear it. I love my WR as well. they are great, reliable machines!
Great video, I have a 02 Yamaha yz250f with the steel frame. Do I pour the oil where the dip stick is? Thanks
You'll be just fine running that oil in your new bike. Just be sure to follow along with your service manual for recommendations and specs for what weight and oil you should run and you'll be just fine. Let us know if you run into any other questions
@nickfranzitta238 - refer to your owner's manual for the manufacturer's recomendations. I change my WR250f's oil every 200 miles.
tell always it is necessary to turn off the bottom Bol and to remove bottom a branch pipe or it it isn't obligatory to do each time?
I did everything shown. I have the aluminum frame, but when I go to refill with oil, I get about 1/2qt in and the level is already past the sight glass. Should it be past it?
You'll have to refer to your service manual
Sounds good, let me know if you have any other questions
refer to the parts diagrams on our website. You will be able to see how it goes.
I forgot to put my oil filter spring back in. Will it be ok until next change?
No! Be sure to lean your bike over and put that back in asap.
A little bit more technical information would be nice... like how you edited the pulling out and putting back in of the torque filter cover bolts.
I'm showing the specs for that bike are 1.05L - Periodic Oil Change and then 1.15L for Oil Change w/ Filter Removed and 1.30L Completely Dry
I would love to sell you the part, but we can't sell OE parts outside the USA. thanks!
Your oil specs will be the same as below. 1.05L for a Periodic Oil Change and then 1.15L for Oil Change w/ Filter Removed and 1.30L Completely Dry
The 2011 YZ250F holds 1.2 liters or 1.26 quarts
Fantastic video cheers! could you tell me what year model this bike is and how much oil i'll need for a 2008 model. Would you also happen to know the type and volume of oil required for the front forks as i need to change the seals. Thanks very much in advance!
Hey man great video! i just have one question about the oil strainer. When i pulled my strainer out it was all messed up! it has a huge tear in the middle of it and its falling apart, you video shows the same one i have, but when i look online they show a different style of strainer, could you point me to right website that sells the same one in your video?
btw do the steel framed bikes have an oil screen in the reservoir
Hello, first off I would like to thank you all for the killer videos and amazing prices! Secondly, I have a quick question. On my 08 yz250f in the manual it just says check the engine oil, but it doesnt have a dipstick, do you just refer to the window? if so the window is full after running it
Good Job!!! But how do you know when you need to change your oil? Please resond!!!
I have a 2007 yz 250f with only a site glass and have no idea the proper amount of oil, site glass fills mediately, aint rite, it has a oil cooler so it must take at least a full liter or more, any help ?

I have a question I don't have the manual yet just got the bike and I don't know how much to put in it I was wondering if you could direct me in the right way of How much?
Thomas Maclean Well with each year, make and model the oil capacity can vary. What machine do you have and i can find out?
2005 yamah yz250f
Thomas Maclean Oil and Oil Filter change requires 1.1L
Do you have to loosen the second bolt to just drain the oil?(2009 wr250f)
jamen brooks Yes
Is there a transmission side and a engine side for the oil?
jamen brooks Negative.
I have a question, i unbolted my oilfilter cap, when i took it off the filter fell out and in the oilfilter house was a spring, but i have no idea how it is supposed to go back in can u help me?
hey i need help.my yz250f oil pan bolt doesnt tighten i keep twisting it and it doesnt tighten it also leaks oil wen being ran. how can i fix this?
What about for a 02 YZ250F? manual says i put 1 liter without oil filter change do i put that much? also does it damage the bike if i change the oil without changing the oil filter?

I RESPECT THIS GUY
Can you tell me how much oil a 2007 YZ250F takes? I bought the bike used and do not have an owners manual. Please and Thank you!
Ben Lenda Manual calls for 1.15L.
Rocky Mountain ATV MC that is with a oil and filter change?
Ben Lenda Yes correct.
I use my bike as a commuter. Is it still recommended to change them every 10 hours
what about the dipstick at the top of the frame? it filters through?
does the steel frame wr also have a screen?
this has nothing to do with the vid but what do i do when i pop a wheelie and my foorks make a thump nois like i bottomed out but it makes that noise when it comes off the ground
??
@daleyracingteam - I am glad it helped!
I will love you if you make a video with this same bike (WR250F 2007) on a FORK OIL CHANGE.
@rmatvmc i have a question, on my 02 wr250f to get my oil filter screen off i need a 24mm socket. I've used a 1/2 inch drive, i cant get it to budge. The only other option is to ugga dugga, but i dont wanna break anything.. any recommendations?
Have you used penetrating oil yet? Or even just adding an extension to the handle of the tool for a little more leverage?
@rmatvmc I used a few different methods. Thankfully, the impact gun I have has multiple settings, I got brave put it on the lower setting and slowly popped the trigger.. I was about to stop when the socket spun. I checked the threads and looks all good.. got lucky..
@@JERJER1990 Nice job! Using an impact can definitely get nerve wrecking with things like that!
@rmatvmc thank you, and I appreciate you taking time to respond.. you guys are awesome. Not just the mechanic videos but the site for buying parts as well. Much respect!!

Jason Grima I would recommend investing in a service manual for steps on first checking your oil level and second how to properly change the oil along with how much oil you need to add back in.
how much oil do i put in a yz250f 2016 model yamaha for a oil change
Hi there from Australia 🇦🇺 Does anyone have measurements length & diameter for oil filter for 2002 yz250f thanks heaps Rocky Mountain
hi, i removed the oil line on my 08 yz250f to clean the oil screen and when i put it back on and tightened it up. when i started the bike oil started leaking out of where the oil line goes onto the engine, it did this after the bike had been running for about 5-10 seconds. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Do you have to remove the gas tank on a 2006 YZ250F to access the dipstick like on the 01 02 YZ's?
On my 2001 yz250f you do not have to take the tank off to get to the dipstick, it's right closer to the triple clamp

Is the WR 250 and the YZ250 the same engine?
How much oil would go into my 09 yz 250f and what kind of oil do you recommend?
what would the part number be on that oil hose?
I believe the part number you're looking for is 5XC-13464-20-00. But to be sure you have the correct part for your bike I would suggest going to the OEM parts finder ( www.rockymountainatvmc.com/oem-parts/Yamaha ), entering your bike model, and checking in the "Oil Pump" schematic for the hose you're referring to.
how much oil did you put back in?
