I wrestled with a tire for ages in my garage, and could NOT figure out how to complete it. This was the only video I found that clearly showed how to get the tube in, and align the valve stem, and then get the tire back on. Once I did it exactly as you show here, it was easy peasy. I swear my neighbors almost saw a grown man cry in his garage..... and finally got the darn thing on thanks to this. Thank you!!
I had a Dirt Rider mag subscription from the early to late 80's. I learned a lot about bikes and riding techniques. I read & reread every word cover to cover many times.
Dude..I have been riding bikes for over 25 years..You are the boss when it comes to changing a tire. Never seen it done that quick and efficient..I will be doing a clinic on this with our club..Awesome..thanks!!
thank you this allowed me to repair my sons tube that i have been fighting for a while now... yep im just a mom and with this video was able to successfully change his tube thank you!!
What an amazing video. All these years, struggling with tire mounting/dismounting and one 8 minute video illustrates the error of my ways. And it works for the most stubborn of tire/tube combinations, big or small, fat of thin, bicycle or motorbike The secret sauce in your method is just the right amount of air in the tube. Thanks.
Thanks for this video. I’m changing my first tire myself and I’m sure my neighbors think I’m having a mental break down in my garage. This video is helping me a lot.
Yeah, seems like most of these videos are just dudes showing off their tire stand. This video will come in super handy when I get a flat in the middle of nowhere and I can just pull out my tire stand.
I changed the rear tire on my 2006 KLX 250s Dual Sport on Monday, and it was a tough one. It had been a couple of years since I changed a tire and it took me 2 hours, and according to this video I did at least 4 things wrong. WOW! Putting the tube inside the tire before getting one side of the tire on the rim....DOH! Now I know. I'm saving this video in my favorites. The Kenda Trackmaster II is a really stiff tire as well as the Kenda Extra Heavy Duty tubes which are 3 times as thick as normal tubes, man it was a bear to get on. I'm glad I don't have to mess with rim locks, my bike doesn't have enough power with my weight to ever spin a tire, 17,000 miles and I've never had a flat tire. Thanks for this video.
Putting the inner tube into the tire first and then only fitting both into the rim, is the right method to use. Using dish washing liquid as a lubricant is also a must to effectively help the tires to fit onto the rim. Thank you for freely sharing your expertise with others.
I like your method of putting the inner tube into the tire first before trying to install both the inner tube and the tire back onto the wheel. It makes putting the tube valve back onto the rim much easier. Half inflating the inner tube before putting it back onto the wheel was another great tip.
'and you smell nice and fresh' perfection. Was not expecting that and it made me chuckle. This was an exceptional training video, and I've trained a lot of people. Thank you, this increased my confidence in self recovery greatly.
When you set the Bead Buddy, place a spoon or spoons to the left of it and when you get to where the tire gets tight, just lift them up. This is especially helpful for the amateur tire changer. I've put in as many as three spoons in to make it really easy.
Set them out in the sun to warm up. Or, if the tire is still usable, take the bike for a spin around the block to put a lot of heat in the tire. It makes it SO much easier to change.
@@DustySquitoNM plus soapy water. Get some longer tyre levers too. I feel for you mate. I had to use an old fork leg on the tyre lever; the rubber was so hard. (winter perhaps)
You forgot to add cussing and throwing tools. Most important patches. Thanks for the video. As for a tire stand as someone else commented I just use a long screwdriver in a vice and toss a small square scrap board with a hole in it over the screwdriver as a base.
this is among the best video tutorials that exist, but, he really needs to demonstrate this on a old tire. that tire looks flexible af compared to the old ones im used to working with.
Thanks so much for such a clear and well filmed video. Watched it 20 times, then cracked on! Two fresh tyres on my wheels with no damge to the rims, no damage to the tools, and no pinches on to the tubes. Thanks!!!
This video saved my life!!!! ...not really but it sure helped me to change my own dirt bike tires finally! It really just takes practice. Changing my own tire was hell at first but now its no big deal at all. Just make sure to use plenty of soapy water and remember to keep that tire off the bead on the opposite side you are working on.
Watched 10 times. Just did my first one. Worked out OK. I don't have a nice stand so used an old tire. Motion Pro spoons and a mini bead buddy. It was a Maxxis Desert IT rear 120-18, pretty much the toughest tire there is as far as I know. Thanks for the video!!
During the summer months. I would leave the tire out in the sun for a while to soften up the rubber. It made it a little easier to change. Every little bit helps. After a few years, it was much easier to drop it off at the local shop in the morning, and pick it up in the after noon. Worth every dollar when you get older.
Thank you thank you thank you for posting this video. Using this video, I just finished mounting both front and rear Sedona tires, which are notoriously hard to mount, on my CRF450. Just do it exactly how the man says, take your time and save $80.
A tire stand that brings it up so you are not bent over getting sore doing what can be an aggravating job a lot easier. Get 3 good spoons, all kinds of styles, and the bead buddy helps too. Just keep it all in the box the stand comes in along with the baby powder and spray bottle with dawn and water and a valve stem insert tool and maybe even the Allen wrench the stand needs for assy. It's all together and takes all the searching for this and that stress out of it. Great video here, lots of suttle style tips, watch close.
Thanks for these videos! I'm a dirt bike beginner and have done all the maintenances myself just from youtube videos and my bike's manual. These are really helpful.
Did a used $5 dirt tire (super stiff) on the rear 1972 Yamaha XS650 rim on the garage floor with 2 Craftsman orange plastic coated crescent wrenches...aahhh those were the days.....took a grinder and took off the nubs hitting the frame..off to the track!
Didn't quite use your technique but it sure helped. The easiest tyre change I've done. Practicing on a gash 18" rear wheel with a solid Avon Trail tyre and I guess the takeaway was patience and steady progress. Cheers, pal.
I like your way of doing the tube and tire all in one go. Beats the hell out of scraping your knuckles trying to fish the valve stem through the rim with the tire already half on.
I lube the bead the same as you but if you look at where the bead area contacts the rim as you install it you can see the underside or inside of the bead is where you need to lube as well so it slides off the rim, I dip my fingers in lube and run them under the bead all the way around the tire.
I remember doing this out in the middle of nowhere at night in Baja California. I didn't have to time put the new tire on before our trip so my buddy says we can do it at camp. It was cold about 40-50 degrees so we set the tire near our camp fire to warm it up a bit so it wasn't so hard then went for it. We were sweating like crazy doing this even though it was so cold.
Hi! Great Moto Tire Tutorial! Haven't Motocrossed since 1975, but want to keep my "tire changing chops" up in case a neighbor kid asks for help. Really hope you were simply demonstrating a tire change procedure or swapping out a leaking inner tube because I thought that old Knobby Tire was just fine and had plenty of "dirt biting knobby teeth" on it to still blow up berms!
I've watched lots of videos and bought the motion pro spoons and I'm 2 for 2 pinched tubes on the back tire. I can change the front with no issue. My bike has 2 rim locks on the back rim.
Great video my friend. Ive worked at an automotive/tire store for a year so I feel like I shouldnt have to look up a video a dirtbike tire, but im glad I did so I can be confident that I know what im doing. Thank you sir!
I know your doing a demonstration of how to use tire irons but I see you have a spoked rim in the tire machine. Do you use that? I have a klr and used the tire machine for the rear but didn't dare do the .front
how are you cameron I hope you are well I have a question I would like to know if my motorcycle has the possibility of putting a thicker tire? the size of the rear tire 90/100/14 and the front is 70/100/17 so they originally come
sigurd2498 I think he may have had a little help from heating the tyre up, unless the temperature is already 30 degrees celcius or more, im trying at the moment in tasmania, is only about 12 degrees and this bastard aint going no where unless i destroy the rim, time to get the heat gun out
My recent Shinko 244 tube type rear is in the garage 3/4 of the way on the rim and will not go any further. I'm thinking my heavy duty tube is taking up too much room inside so the tire can't slip down into the center of the rim. And now it's 40 degrees F outside so I have to wait for warm weather to take it off and switch tubes. Argh.
@@rhllnm Heat the tire with a heat gun or a hair dryer. Also, use plenty of lube. In our shop we use Dawn mixed with water in a spray bottle. SOAK HER DOWN!!! I install heavy duty tubes for our customers all the time. Much harder to work with for sure but the tube isn't stopping the tire from being spooned on. Opposite side of the tire where you are spooning needs to be pushed down into the center of the rim. Kneel on it or get someone to stand on it. Once again, SOAK HER DOWN with lube inside and out of the tire.
I remember teaching my young fella how to change his tyres , I came down to the shed one time & he was fixing his tyre & I heard all the F's & C's coming out of him & thought I might leave him to it , we still laugh about that . he did get the hang of it after a while
In the summer, I leave them out in the sun to soften up the rubber. Makes it a whole lot easier. If you put it in the bed of your truck. The rim can get hot to the touch.
make sure a new tire iron is smoothed with sandpaper. I'm talking about MTB but im here to learn how the big boys DO IT!. I haven't had a dirt bike since the 80's so at 68 I'm hoping to get a Honda crf 250.
Now this is helping another. Good help. Good video! I wanted to do my moped myself but the paint is fragile where you have to put the rim spoon. How can i avoid scratching on a coated rim? txxx
My question is, when you bought that new tire did It already come with the “Geomax” and “MX51” with the yellow lettering? Or how are they yellow? I bought new Geomax MX33 for my bike hoping they would have yellow lettering but they were black just the color of the tire... random question I know thanks.
its been 10 years since i changed a dirt bike tire... and i followed your advice... Soapy water will work but nothing like simple green right? thats too slimy right? do you pack grease in the wheel bearing hole before re installation?

Hi Jay, GREAT demo video. Question: do you have to do anything different when mounting a trials tire on back? I bought one of your bike from you years ago (2009 crf250X) and still love it, but need to replace the back tire and wanted to stay with the trials type tire. I bought and mounted the exact same tire (Michelin) but it seems to be lop sided a little, or sort of off balance a little bit. Any useful tips here? Thanks!
i was given a tub of tire paste (automotive) soapy water isn't good enough for older hard tires now its a breeze - plus you need good spoons - went thru 3 sets till i found right ones
Looks real easy but how do they get the tire so soft? My new mx32 is no where near as soft as that. I don't get it? How hard do you need to pull on those irons?
Fantastic video. Good to see detailed advice from a Pro. Is there any truth that for better balance and ease of installation that the tire is positioned a certain way on the rim relative to the valve stem, and if so, what are the details?
Is it not a problem that the tire seems to have been making 'screaming noises' when it seemed to be getting torn, I mean It is tight and the little bit of taring noise I got of mine when destroying a tube last time I tried; it made small damaged areas, very much like what looks to be the same amount of pull on this video, is that alright to leave? is there any amount of ripping that becomes a problem for abrasives to the tube when installed?
I watched this on my offline smart phone alone at end of the Earth: mongolia. And my first motorcycle tire changing was success. Thanks a lot
Balazs Kobalov Kovacs Mongolia? Awesome.
Haha awesome, that's why I'm watching too, planning on a trip like that, wanna know how to do this very well BEFORE I get out there!

Thanks!
a dunlop is the absolute easiest tire to mount in my opinion, nice job
And best tire to run in Florida! Love the new mx33s!
Are tubed tires easier to change?
i was given a tub of tire paste (automotive) soapy water isn't good enough for older hard tires now its a breeze - plus you need good spoons - went thru 3 sets till i found right ones
Good afternoon sir what type of spaner you use on the vel
Nice job, short, clear and to the point!
Excellent video. Thanks.
What kind of tire stand are you working on? I can't find that style.
Looks real easy but how do they get the tire so soft? My new mx32 is no where near as soft as that. I don't get it? How hard do you need to pull on those irons?
+Robert Ryan Are mx32 good on lose dirt sand and mud
+Robert Ryan ..set in the sun, no sun...blow dryer for a few minutes makes a diff.
...now try changing with extra heavy duty tube :/
Fantastic video. Good to see detailed advice from a Pro. Is there any truth that for better balance and ease of installation that the tire is positioned a certain way on the rim relative to the valve stem, and if so, what are the details?
Outstanding how-to video. Great explanations and do’s & don’t’s. Thanks!
CAN I USE IT FOR ENDURO TIRES WITH AIR CHAMBER?
Is it not a problem that the tire seems to have been making 'screaming noises' when it seemed to be getting torn, I mean It is tight and the little bit of taring noise I got of mine when destroying a tube last time I tried; it made small damaged areas, very much like what looks to be the same amount of pull on this video, is that alright to leave? is there any amount of ripping that becomes a problem for abrasives to the tube when installed?
Whats a good tire stand to use ?
Where did you get those tires?they look good
is it possible doing the same with a road tubless 180/55 ?
Great video, any tips on how not to scratch the rims during the process?
Would this be a similar process for a Harley?
