Keep in mind that a 5 gram ring that is 18 K is only 75% gold. In effect you’re paying the gold price for the 25% tin, or zinc
Agree. If you want to bargain on gold per gram you need to bring your own scales, convert the spot price to whatever the carat is to have an idea what the wriggle room is. If spot today is $41 per gram as you said at the time, which we assume is for 24kt ie pure gold, then 18k is 75% of that ie $30.75 per gram at spot price. Then you need to weigh the piece and get your calculator out.
Just to let you know. $41/gram for gold is for pure gold which is 24karat. Since you bought 18k it is only around $30 per gram. Just remember your stuff so the gold worth was around $174 not $232.

Just know that many Chinese people will seem rude but really it’s their culture from back home to be quiet during social interactions. I learned this from a cultural anthropology class. Apparently Chinese people don’t make small talk, so they will answer with “ok” “yeah” “dw” etc. In their minds, they are being respectful because “only clowns talk a lot unnecessarily.” In China itself, this especially pertains to money, so they show you prices on a calculator instead of saying it

Also dont forget Colin: When calculating spot prices (melt value) for gold, you have to factor in purity. Gold at $1280 per ounce divided by 31.1g (for a troy ounce, only applicable to precious metals) is $41/g for example. But 18k gold is 18/24 parts gold (75%). 14k is is 14/24 parts (58.5%), 10k is 10/24 (41.6%). When you pay $40/g if you get 22karat gold that's a great deal, if you get 10k gold you're paying more than double spot. Purchasing jewelry might not be a very good idea unless you took a bit of classes on how jewelry resale works. Especially considering how much fake/plated jewelry (completely worthless) you might get in some of these underground night market jewelry shops.
