Hey guys, in case you were wondering you're not going mad, yes you have seen this video before. We uploaded it last week but there was some issue with the audio so we pulled it. Here it is again in all its glory :)
What a great set up - the mechanic comes to your place! What I wouldn't do - well, I would pay WHATEVER, to have a great mechanic like this that knows his stuff, to come and fix my bike when having a problem! Fantastic video, seems like BMW could figure out how to build a more reliable sensor, but it is accurate when it does work!
I just finished dealing with a cracked fuel pump housing on a similar r1200 model. I bought used parts and had to do the job 3x. I understand your frustration. Those quick-disconnect fuel fittings are terrible. I am surprised that there hasn't been a class-action lawsuit brought against BMW and the manufacturer due to them being a fire hazard. I must say that the bike has made me hate late Model BMWs, the build quality is rubbish and the spare parts prices are outrageous. Good job with this fuel strip replacement and a happy customer. In the US, BMW did a recall on the fuel strip and extended the warranty for something like 15 years. I hate lawyers but I want to see BMW get raked over the coals for some of the garbage products they have stuck their customers with.
Need to replace mine as well so very helpful. I noticed several videos using lighters with leads to repair sensor. If sensor (my bike has 16,000 miles) is prone to premature failure, maybe a cost effective procedure. A new sensor is $217 dollars, not counting installation. This video a big help.
Really amazing video. Thanks. I was going to "upgrade" to an R1200RT (2009) from my Honda NT700, but the one I had my eye on has this problem. It also has the engine "warning" light permanently on because it needs to be reset, which apparently costs £150. Watching this, and reading the comments of other BMW bike owners, I'm seriously questioning whether there's any point in switching. The Honda may not be the most exciting bike in the world but it NEVER gives me problems, and nothing ever seems to break.
Great content keep up the great work. To the point, I have replaced the fuel strip (Spanish one) and it works great however the range is way out ie zero fuel, range 132 miles ? , Motoscan OBD etc re set fuel etc etc what can i do to reset the range PLEASE
Just a note for anyone doing this job, when you have installed and calibrated the sensor and put everything back together, you need to run the bike for a minute and ROTATE THE FRONT WHEEL. Only then will the computer reset. Also, when hanging the sensor its much easier to dismantle the fuel cap assembly and attach at that end, just be careful with the hose that goes back down to the pump, its long enough but you may need to put the pump back in place to create some slack.
What do you know about BMW motorbikes ! Quite a lot it seems as this is a great video thanks. Just got this dreaded problem on my 08 GS & thought I would use TH-cam to see how to fix it. Glad I did as there is no way I can do this so another job for a brilliant mechanic I use. Prior to this it being Winter I was considering selling it but given the cost of repairing it I definitely need to keep it now. Money well spent Steve. Roll on Spring I say . Thanks again. Ted
M - I - C - K - E - Y M - O - U - S - E. MICKEY MOUSE. He's the leader of our club. The more I learn of BMW's design, the more I question the competence of their engineering department expertise. Small wonder they're so damn expensive to repair and maintain.
You'll never get the old one off and new one on thru the pump access. Remove the fuel filler assembly and the plastic bib. Using a small screw driver, pry up and lift the filler liner. Easy.
Recently bought an 09 GS, and am having the fuel pump replaced under a recall. Do you recommend replacing the fuel strip sensor at the same time? Mileage is 5,500. Any advice or comment appreciated. Great video, thank you.
I watched this video a week ago but it disappeared before I could post my comment, fortunately copy/paste saved the day 😬. OMG that’s the most suspense I’ve felt in a TH-cam video ever! What really scared me is how anxious you were on the way to the job, compared with when you had the KTM lit up like a Xmas tree with multiple electronic gadgets added. Luckily I never had a problem with the fuel gauge on my old GS. Thanks for sharing and hope you enjoyed the beer on the way home 😬👍🏻👌🏼
As you said, what's wrong with a conventional fuel float? Too much tech these days and there's no way I would put my arm in that tank, certainly not past the elbow. Well done, good video.
First one lasted six years and about 60k miles, second lasted about two weeks. Calling the local dealership tomorrow about replacing it, but may end up doing it myself. Does Hex GS911 calibrate the sensor? A arse pain for $220 USD, a day without the bike, and an hour ride each way to have it serviced. Superbike, do you make international service calls? Lol.
Hi, do you use a TEXA diagnostic tool? pretty expensive for us in Romania, do you have any recomendations for something else that gets the job done? not only for BMW, multi-brand
On that k26 where does the fuel line from the fuel filler go into? It has a clamp on it but no evidence of a connection that broke off ?! And what goes to the line on the fuel sending unit? PLEASE HELP ITS BEEN SPRAYING FUEL ALL OVER ruined the garage floor and my valve cover paint thanks and safe riding great video
i have replaced mine 4 times. fooking fuel strip. I would like to see you cut the old one open. I might have to make my own. I would love an aftermarket replacement. BMW never redesigned one.
hi thank for the insight some one is selling is BMW with this trouble .i could do the job. but have no dynasties eqpment . they build bikes for use to buy and ride. but there clueless when the faults arrive out of no wear. so they need to read the bike workings and pin the brake down as all data is vaults .
I replaced the fuel sensor on a bw 1200 gsa but not having issue with running. Bike runs like a lawnmower and cuts out shortly after. Any ideas what I've missed (not leaking anything and electi Ruc connections are I place)
I have the same bike what is the machine you program with? Does gs-911 carry that capability? My gauge is not accuive ran out of fuel at just under 100 miles range😨 worst feeling ever besides a flat..
I no this video is for your own. Is it possible for you to let me know how much it cost to put a new sensor in my BMW1200gs 2008model if I took it to BMW please Terry
I am running into this problem now on my 2015 and honestly I dont think I have the stomach for dealing with this...that and I dont have the reset tools etc.
Hi .i have a gs1200 with a fuel strip problem like the video I would like you to fix mine ,what part of the country do you operate iam in West Sussex..nice to see someone who knows what he is doing,,,,cheers
I had mine stored for a year with a low fuel level. During that time the fuel sensor stopped working. I had it fixed and the mechanic said the fuel tank shouldn’t be kept low or empty for too long. Apparently the fuel sensor strip dries out and stops working? 10 years later and I had forgot all about it. Left the bike unused for a long time with a low fuel tank level? Started it up. SAME FAULT! Repair is quite time consuming so will cost lots to fix.
My 2021 R9T is reading it's on reserve when the Tank is Full. My light is flashing, and it's counting How much fuel is left, but yet again, My Tank is full....any thoughts ??,,Thank You
After your video showing the Battmon II review, I have purchased one of those Battmon II and I've installed it and downloaded the App & all it does is saying "CONNECTING". Have you got a contact number for the guy who's selling these.
Sorry you're having trouble. Not sure I completely understand the question? The guy selling would be whoever you purchased from. They will be your point of contact for support assuming they are a recognised dealer. The company that supplies/manufacturers isn't a public facing company and only deal with the trade (their retailers).
There are two versions of the app, you want the second version. I had this problem when I downloaded the first version of the app which isn't compatible with V2 of the module. Best follow the QR code on the package or on the Bluetooth box itself.
If the sensor goes bad does the bike don't run? I apologize if it is a brainless question. I'm new to the bike world.mahalo in advance to the response. Aloha
On my '09, the display said 3/4 full tank, and I ran out of gas. Local farmer helped me with some, and bike ran fine, still with 3/4 tank display. Dealer here in Green Bay replaced sensor in a snap. The tech had worked for the Portland police, and said he had done quite a few. This is the 4th strip on this bike BTW. It has been several years, and no further problems to this point. Fingers crossed - I must be about at the 12 year warranty extension limit.
What I can tell you is that in Canada they have a special policy which they will go back 15 years So it cost me nothing for my 2008. Cost of the fuel strip is $375.00 CND. without installation...
Really sorry to hear that. It is listed as a "not for children video" in the TH-cam settings page. When I'm watching content with my kids I always make sure that I have the parental control set to an appropriate setting, that way you can be certain of what you are getting.
I'm surprised that the E.U. haven't made it an M.O.T. fail if a bikes fuel gauge isn't working properly. Something for the future , probably. What happened to just opening the fuel filler flap and looking how much fuel you have left. Apparently, this insanity is progress.
Its crazy and massively frustrating that this item is such a disaster. It's one of a series of faults that happens to r1200 series bikes that has owners tearing their hair out. These bikes are supposedly premium! 0I've a ten year old Honda scooter, made in Malaysia which has a 100% reliable fuel gauge. Yet MCN talk about BMW reliability as if it was never in doubt!
I wonder about the comments in most of these sites I bought an old (2006 ) R-1200GS with 69000 miles on it currently it just turned 113545 miles all the problems I have had until now 1) drive shaft front spider bearing almost damaged the housing replaced it with second hand unit 1/3 the price of a new one one pair of fork oil seals rear brake pads one tune up by dealer and tires (metzler tourance next ) every 11K Miles but everyone else seems to have all kinds of problems i am lucky ??
I have a 2008 GSA. Bought new. Only 27,000 miles so far. 3 fuel strip failures, 2 fuel pump failures, front brake line recall, rear wheel mount recall, a couple of other recalls I can't remember. The good news is BMW has covered it all, even after warranty exp and extended the fuel strip warranty to 12 years.
Great video I guess you better skinny guy so you dont end up in your local ER with BMW on your arm guess you could tell them its modern engagement ring for men. Luckily I have a 10 they warranty out 12 years on piss poor design what is wrong with old school method where they had reserve valve in tank with normal stem about 2 inches higher than reserve but that was gravity feed system when you could see to bottom of tank and check with quick look in the tank they add several 1000 in price with fuel pump ,fuel guage the in dash they probably invested a half million in tech that was absolute trash and nothing short of annoying
Hey guys, in case you were wondering you're not going mad, yes you have seen this video before. We uploaded it last week but there was some issue with the audio so we pulled it. Here it is again in all its glory :)
Got the same issue but fixing next week. I did 250 miles on Sunday and my gauge didn't drop a bar - most economical bike I've ever had!!
What a great set up - the mechanic comes to your place! Benji: I enjoyed the beer, and Jim bought me a meal too. He treated me like a princess :-)
Superbike Surgery TV that’s a result. 😂👍🏻🎉💰💰💰💰
As you said, what's wrong with a conventional fuel float? Too much tech these days and there's no way I would put my arm in that tank, certainly not past the elbow. Well done, good video.
Damn, do you guys still do this?
I have a 2005 R1200RT that needs this work done.
Lol.
Great video & SERVICE!
quiestion, isn`t easier if you remove the fuel cap screws and que hole assembly?
Unfortunately the hole for the fuel filler isn't big enough to be any use.
Ive seen on another channel swapping to a float, do you think the float is a better long term option?
Hi, do you use a TEXA diagnostic tool? pretty expensive for us in Romania, do you have any recomendations for something else that gets the job done? not only for BMW, multi-brand
Yes it's the TEXA tool. It's really the only solution if you need full multi brand coverage.
What year model RT did BMW change to a float?
Is the new fuel strip working or are they still failing?
On that k26 where does the fuel line from the fuel filler go into? It has a clamp on it but no evidence of a connection that broke off ?!
And what goes to the line on the fuel sending unit? PLEASE HELP ITS BEEN SPRAYING FUEL ALL OVER ruined the garage floor and my valve cover paint thanks and safe riding great video

Oh, how I wish you could take a spin out to Waukesha WI and fix my 1100RS!
I replaced the fuel sensor on a bw 1200 gsa but not having issue with running. Bike runs like a lawnmower and cuts out shortly after. Any ideas what I've missed (not leaking anything and electi

How much do U charge to do install and calibrate this fuel sensor? Thx

Hope that fuel strip lasts a few years! My current on has been in for 2-3 years but I've had them last as little as 3 weeks!
Thank you 1st time beamer... Notice 3rd lead wire connector going into fuel pump why didn't you conected? Thank you
Doesn't go to the tank, it's for the power outlet socket.
And next on the view list , “All Creatures Great and Small” 😃🤣🍻
I am running into this problem now on my 2015 and honestly I dont think I have the stomach for dealing with this...that and I dont have the reset tools etc.
That will work for a few months... and then it will need anew strip!
Hi .i have a gs1200 with a fuel strip problem like the video I would like you to fix mine ,what part of the country do you operate iam in West Sussex..nice to see someone who knows what he is doing,,,,cheers
I'm Gloucestershire based so the callout charge would probably kill it. Feel free to call me and discuss.
I had mine stored for a year with a low fuel level. During that time the fuel sensor stopped working.

That looks exactly like mine. 07?
I would not be able to replace mine without the software for calibration, is the software publicly available?
Excellent video thank you for posting.
Nice job... thanks...👏👏👏🚀🚀🚀
My 2021 R9T is reading it's on reserve when the Tank is Full. My light is flashing, and it's counting How much fuel is left, but yet again, My Tank is full....any thoughts ??,,Thank You
I would just reset my trip meter at each fill up and ignore the stupid meter.
Hallo. 2005 R 1200RT Tankanzeige funktioniert überhaupt nicht. Können Sie mir den Teilecode sagen? Ich kann nicht finden.
Good skills great video
Excellent
How much did that cost?
Thank you.

Is that a plastic fuel tank?
It is...
I was going to buy a new one of these but I’m not giving them my money . I’ll use my trip computer thanks.
A veritable Panzer Extravaganza.
How much fix like this cost?
If the sensor goes bad does the bike don't run? I apologize if it is a brainless question. I'm new to the bike world.mahalo in advance to the response. Aloha

good work!!! it works!!! ah ah ah
In the US my BMW dealer informed me that there is a life time warranty on the fuel strip which was replaced after the warranty ran out for no charge
Unfortunately not the case in the UK.
Mine has been replaced 3 times so far (in the U.S.)
@@thomaswitman8592 Did they replace the replacement, no charge? Do you recall how long they warrantees replacement strips? thanks.

Bought secondhand R1200R couple of years ago from a Pretoria dealer. Them all shit started. BMW?.. Never ever again!,
‘Elbow deep’.... fooking luv it..! Lol..
you sound so much like Karl Pilkington... you should consider a comedy motorcycle repair channel :)
Great video of what to do. Just one criticism…. Was watching at home with kids nearby. Not great to hear the language used though

This is a big issue with the RT1200RT BMW needs to do a recall and fix that POS design.

You're mixing up gynaecology with obstetrics.
There's a difference?
I wonder about the comments in most of these sites I bought an old (2006 ) R-1200GS with 69000 miles on it currently it just turned 113545 miles all the problems I have had until now

You guys think it's fixed? Computer shows 3/4 of a tank will go 85 miles. That's about 16mpg. Time for that pint.
Woooohoooooo!!
This is what is wrong with my bike now, they want 550 dollars to fix it
Why do you have to keep using the f word ? You spoil yourself.
Leave it up to BMW to screw up a great bike.
Tutto sto teatro per fare una calibrazione ad un trasduttore inidacazione carburante. Attaccala ad una centrale elettrica la prossima.
this is why i avoid these ineptly over-engineered machines
