Your video solved the mystery of removing the oem pump from the housing of my 07RT. After banging my head against the wall for several hours, and about to surrender to ordering an oem pump, I found your video. The video showed the trick of carefully nudging the filter base from the pump housing and saved the day (and my wallet). Thank you so very much.
A great video, showing all the handy things you need to know when cleaning the (non replaceable) fuel filter in an r1200gs. It's easy to watch and full of useful 'does ' and 'do nots' to make the job much easier and useful details of how the whole system works - thanks! :)
Many Many Thanks for this....This is exactly the video I need. My bike performance after 122,500 miles has degraded at higher revs and top speed. It now only does 118MPH instead of 134-6 MPH of old. It feels like an odd fuel starvation issue, so this is a rabbit hole I will try to go down after going down others (coils/plugs/shaft drive). This is a 10x of my mechanical skills and the bike (2004 R1200 GS - No. 179 off the production line !!) Is at a holiday home in the Canary Islands....
Thank you. Very informative video... and timely. I'm about to delve into my 2008 GSA again at 220,000 km. Question: Have you ever cut open one of these filters to see what the filter medium actually is? Paper? Ceramic?
Great video. I am ready to install my new fuel pump as we speak. I checked the controller with the controller bypass and found that was not the problem. Now I am on to the fuel pump.
I recently bought an 07 1200GS, and after a week in, I was driving along with what I thought was over a half tank of gas left, and before I knew it I was on the side of the road without sgas. I can only guess it was fuel issue and after watching your video, which was VERY informative. I will be going over my fuel system here very soon. Thank you for such a great step by step video! I wish more people would go into such great detail.
Thank you so much for this priceless video. I really appreciate the effort to post this in such a clear way with all details and even the alternate parts needed. I just order the parts and I'll be ready to get my partner back to roll. Best wishes for you and every gs rider! It's really a gift to have access to this help for free. Thanks again!

Thank You for this informative video. I’m about to do this job next week. Fuel pressure is down to 2,8bar and the bike isn’t responsive on full throttle. I’m not to keen on removing the fitting for the fuel hose. But we’ll see how it goes.

Oh! I might still have it. Would it be visible when pushing the inside of the valve in (like in your video) and just under the inner part? The problem appears to be mine was black not white. Thx!
Awesome video! I’m almost at the point of finishing the rebuild having followed your instructions to the T. Only part was that small white O-ring you said pay attention to. I probably lost mine; but no idea how as I was really careful with everything. Do you have details or info on where I could find a replacement? Thanks!
No, sorry I have no idea where you'd find one. You'll need to take measurements then source it yourself. Note that you'll need an oring that is fuel compatible.
ey hello, around minute 11:50, where the invisible filter is located, Is there any risk to buildup pressure and crack the flange? (black cover on top of the withe body where the invisible filter is). I have a miro-fracture that starts on one of the mounting holes of the control module. i can send you photos about my failure
I'm not a BMW tech so I'm not sure I'm qualified to give you a firm answer, BUT I think it's unlikely that the pump would build enough pressure to crack that housing. More likely, the crack was caused at time of factory install (over-torque). No way to fix it, no way to tell when it will fail. Best plan is to buy a new assembly.
This system is very similar to the BMW S1000RR 1st and 2nd generation. This video has been very helpful for cleaning the fuel system on my S1000RR. Thanks.
speaking as a mechanic that works for a dealer of all types of bike, I can honestly say all bikes have 'something' that needs attention. Especially after time and use have taken their toll... :o)
Really exceptionally instructive video - top marks! Minus for BMW that managed to make a super-complex assembly that could be easily simplified by design, with no need for a million different features. Also, minus for advertising a good-for-life part such as a filter! What is life? For some it is a few years, for others it is 10. For me it is 20. An easily replaceable, standard design filter - like that I have on my Ducati - would do, and make our life so much easier. I am surprised that the large pump assembly gasket changes size and ductility if not wetted by fuel. A Viton seal would keep its properties. I wonder why BMW has not adopted this material. I bought my bike new, after about 3 years I took it to a BMW dealer for regular maintenance. They found a few recalls from the factory, one was related to a "a plastic part of the gas tank that cracks". I wonder what this was (no explanation was given) but I was surprised BMW had released such a part. Final remark: instead of dipping a fuel line in warm water (aargh!) I would heat it up with an air dryer
Excellent video, very helpful, just done on my 2012 GS Rallye, suggest take off tank in full much easier, and heat gun to soften the plastic, it sure was tight fit
David, Thank you, this is a great video, great detail. Well done, and thus info is worth sharing. I hope to see more awesome videos like this in the future .
2014 K1600GTL that’s set for 2 years with a quarter tank of gas. Hard starts, run intermittently and chokes if given hard throttle. Put new gas in, but doesn’t seem to help yet, but only ridden about 40 miles with new gas. Help!
I doubt the rough idle is related to a clogged filter. Usually a clogged filter causes lack of power at higher RPM because the bike can't draw enough fuel thru the clogged filter. Instead I'd look to your injectors and/or timing and/or valve clearances. You should also look at your air filter and check that your gas is clean and fresh.
Peter - please clarify your question. The "invisible filter" is not available unless you buy a new fuel filter assembly from BMW. If you're talking about the filter that fits into the filler neck, then you can buy that one from BestRest Products. www(dot)BestRestProducts(dot)com

I own a 2009 GSA. You have a fuel float attached to your fuel pump. As far as I know its supposed to be a fuel strip. Did you change it? May I know the part number for that or where did you get it from?
BMW used both fuel strips and floats. They had many problems with the strips and did some recalls. As for converting from a strip to a float, I can't advise. Check the BMW forums.
I recently bought a gsa 1200 2011 with only 4000 km, very well cared for, new oil, walking it has overheated on the road, have you ever seen such a problem? could it be related to the injectors or even this filter?
