Well Curt, first I have to thank you for sharing this method! I will begin by saying I am an amateur mechanic but will venture down unknown roads when I feel like I have no alternative. The alternative in this case was a $700 invoice plus transportation costs in today's high fuel cost environment for my 2005 BMW R1200RT. So, I took apart the plastics per your video (worked as described) and began making my Zap tool from some grill repair parts from Home Depot. Once I had my homemade zapper built, I was ready to go. I put the bike on the center stand, and hooked up the 2 leads to the 2 outside posts of the fuel display connector. I zapped those 2 outside posts 12 times, then I moved the leads to the inside 2 pins and repeated the zap process 12 times to those leads. I then removed my home made zap tool, reconnected the 4 pin harness and fired up the bike before reassembling. After about 85 seconds, low and behold my fuel guage came back and showed the fuel level in the tank correctly and the yellow triangle error condition was gone!!! Needless to say I was ecstatic to say the least!!! I am pleased beyond words and can't wait to share my results with my BMW mechanic, who was very skeptical to say the least!!! THANK YOU AGAIN FOR SHARING YOUR METHOD!!! 😃😃😃😃😃
I’m really glad it worked for you! As evidenced by the comments, it doesn’t always work, and my bike seems to need to be re-zapped occasionally. I have no idea how or why it works, but it beats going back to the dealership…. Again.
Just did this after watching two different TH-cam videos. Went and filled tank. Modified an ignitor and no luck. Tried again making sure I had contact with the terminals. Worked! If I have to do this twice a year, it's worth it. I can't stand things that need repair but also won't throw money at the dealer for a temporary repair. Bonus is the yellow triangle that I was told was a low tire warning is out. Also, for those that are worried about ignition, research how industrial fuel tanks are welded for repair. As long as the heat is below the surface of the liquid, they weld.
After two tries I thought this wouldn’t work, but I left the ignition on for a few minutes while doing a few other things, checked my fuel level and beheld that the gauge was fixed. AWESOME technique! And a great video. Thanks!
Thank you for posting this. Just picked up a used 07 RTP and learned the hard way that the lower end of the fuel gauge isn't working correctly. Was still showing gas in the tank when it ran out of gas! I'll try this later. Been busy playing whack a mole with neglected-bike issue.
Thanks for posting! For anyone else doing this fix, pay attention to how long it takes for the error to clear. Mine seemed to take even longer. 2 minutes seems like forever when you're staring at a blinking error message. Just as you think it didn't work, you will realize it did.
Boom! I'll spend the money instead of risking this and I would never advise someone to do this. Even since enough people said it works. How many did it fail in the worst way?
I didn't understand well which pair of pins to excite first and which ones later, it seemed to me that first they are the two in the center and then the two at the ends, is this correct?
Confirmed in the positive via my TopScan Device which is a bi-directional scan tool My 2006 RT is finally free of all warnings or codes or unwanted warning lights. Did fill the tank with 93 before hand as suggested and added some VP Maddative to up the octane to 100 factory owners guide suggests 98 octane. I do keep it to a minimum of 97 as occasionally I run out of the VP Maddative. Stuff works.
Hy. I also own a r1200rt and a 1200gsa...they both do this thing but aproxmatly 1 time per year My recomandation is:before you zapp it make sure your gas tank is full of gas, the bike is on its center stand and also the side stand is up.. (in running position, not down like when its parked) My bikes fuel gage work fine aproxmatly 1 year after i do the zip as i told you...) good luck
@@martinrichard8362 there’s no link to the zapper. You have to make it yourself by opening up a lighter with a piezo spark unit. $1 at your local Walmart
Curt Adams I’m going to try this on mine see if it works. I have a question though: do we have to empty the gas tank before since gas and electricity don’t mix well?
Same thing happened to me. It worked and reset gauge. I turned the ignition off and got ready to go for a ride. Started the bike up a few minutes later and back to square one! Flashing yellow triangle and gas pump icon.. registering as an empty tank. I might try zapping it tomorrow.
As I’ve said before, I don’t recommend that you do this! If you decide to try it, most people say to have a completely full fuel tank. That’s what I’ve done, and it worked for me. Good luck!
For all the naysayers out there, I just did this to my own bike again, and the gauge is working. For how long is anyone’s guess, but if it’s a year, I’ll take it. Don’t do it…. I don’t care. Go have BMW “fix” it for you.
Tried it several times. Each time it shows full all the time. It doesn't show the actual fuel level. It goes a couple days then the yellow triangle is back and it reads empty again. Perhaps not a true "fix". But worth a try.
I have done this almost two years in Aprilworked ever since i got my 05 at 74k im at 96k now lol not bad for my first bike ever the fun gauge is bogus it works but within 100milesb you best gas up cuz she left me walking one time pushing 😢 theu concreted off section of the highway cars behind😂
i dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know a method to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost the login password. I love any help you can offer me.
@Dario Russell thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
My dealer wanted a crazy amount for the part and another $400 to put it in if they did it while doing the fuel pump recall. More if I waited. Did you need to calibrate it or do anything other than replace it, and what all was involved?
@@clickrebel yeah I bought the part and I bought the gs911 Wi-Fi diagnostic tool and it took a few time s for it to calibrate the stick I put it in and wham bam all good again Sam.
@@clickrebel Don't forget you have to do the stick when it is dry so you connect everything and set it on your gas tank and then calibrate do not do it when it is wet it will not work.
what a waste of time i am taking it in i ruined three lighters raised my blood pressure cursed bmw this thing is just like their cars love them but they break

Just completed this fix and it worked perfectly on the first try. No idea how long it will last, but for now I'm stoked. Thank you!
How long did it last ? thanks

I’m glad it worked for you, and thanks for a great comment. Mine has never taken more than about 30 seconds but obviously it may be longer. Thanks!
Creating a high voltage arc inside a gas tank. What could go wrong? ;)
My thoughts exactly. Got the same problem but I ain't doing that! Still, I'll watch someone else do it lol.
Boom! I'll spend the money instead of risking this and I would never advise someone to do this. Even since enough people said it works. How many did it fail in the worst way?
stoichiometric ratio, anything richer than 14:1 and the air / fuel mixture is too rich too burn. Fill your tank before you attempt this.
Great video. Worked for me as advertised on my 2006. I added alligator clips to my igniter switch and tossed it inn the toolbox for next time. Thanks.
Great idea. I might do that myself, now that my fuel gauge has failed…. Again! At least I know how to fix it!
I see that some time has passed since you solved the problem, I'm curious if it still works after how long?

Just fixed my RT fiel strip using your video. Worked just fine. Thanks a lot for the video. Ride safe!
Glad it worked for you. Mine is dead again, so I’ll have to watch my own video and do it over!

Thanks , this worked first time for me, it was just as you said. Cheers
Hi. I need help with a bypass on the ring antenna. I have a EWS error and bike wont start. Must be a next to road fix if possible
Does anyone have a link to the "zapper?" I'm not sure what to look for.
@@martinrichard8362 there’s no link to the zapper. You have to make it yourself by opening up a lighter with a piezo spark unit. $1 at your local Walmart
What is this actually doing to the gauge sending unit? Why does this work?
Any idea if this works on a K1200GT? Same exact LCD gage. My fuel gage shows empty and i get the yellow triangle too. Anyone? Thank you.
I made this app. Will the indicator be active? Or is it just an image?
How long this fix will last ?
Thank you
It varies. I did it once and it lasted a day. Then I did it to make this video, and so far it’s still good. YMMV

Zapped the fuel strip and it worked for 1 minute, if I do it again will I get the same result?

I think you summed it up, "a terrible, crappy design by BMW and they refuse to fix it". I won't be buying another BMW.

Thanks Curt just got this problem on my 2008 GS so its worth a try. I will let you know how I get on. Regards Ted
And , you did it. Works that. My GS has same problem.

The same problem and we do not succeed with me
2005 R1250RT...It worked!

…aaand it works!!! Great thanks for the tip!
Did it 3 times. Does not work.

Well, it lasted about 4 months, and now it shows full all the time. Now if only I can find the zapper again...
Thank you very much 👍👏it’s now ok
You're welcome! Glad it helped
i am so pleased that the motorcycle is doing well

@Dario Russell it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my account !
@Armando Leroy glad I could help =)
Réussi avec succès 😁 merci
И что это?
Lovely bike :D
I tried it did not work so I said screw it and bought a new one.

Works
what a waste of time i am taking it in i ruined three lighters raised my blood pressure cursed bmw this thing is just like their cars love them but they break
Yeah, it obviously only works some of the time. Mine lasted about 6 months and died again. Too lazy to take everything apart again.
