  • Felix August Bernhard Draeseke (7 October 1835 - 26 February 1913) was a composer of the "New German School" admiring Liszt and Richard Wagner.

    Every time I think I've heard all of your great offerings, I come across another gem I have missed. Thank you so very much for the beauty you have brought into our lives. Our so-called classical radio stations are horribly deficient in their offerings. It is absurd when I contact them with a request to hear a piece I have learned of from you that they don't even know the composer, let alone the piece. No, I am not musically trained, I only know what I enjoy hearing. I only know that I will not bow to their elitist snobbery that they know best what is good music, when all they really have is a very limited education and taste in arts.

    What a brilliant start to a magnificent cycle of symphonies. Draeseke's 4 symphonies should have been part of the standard repetoire!

    When von Bullow said Draeseke was a "harte Nuß", he was not entirely wrong. His music can be fascinating when you dig into it (his textures are immensely rich and polyphonic), but I understand it can sound meandering to an unprepared listener. His harmonies are more stable than what you would expect, but most of his allegro themes are conceived as counterpoint structures, ready to be developed everywhere. He doesn't make it easy. But I'm into his difficulties.

    Affascinante sinfonia.Particolarmente apprezzabili, per me,gli ultimi due movimenti ,dove emergono chiaramente i riferimenti wagneriani.
    Ottima la registrazione.Bell'inserimento.

    If you have to study and you feel bored then you should open the classical music tracks which make you feel better, like this piece.

      Shishir Thadani I agree. Truly brilliant. But I've noticed already 2 dislikes. I know taste differs, but what kind of taste in classical music must a person have to dislike music as great as this?

      The difficulty for me is that the post Romantics are moving away from lyricism or any sort of thematic cohesion in favor of discordance, often literally. Many listeners, like myself, do not consider the output of the modernists to be serious music but rather the product of an intellectualized idea of music. This work to me falls within late Romanticism and is musically satisfying though to a lesser degree than the period from (roughly) 1800 to 1860.

    Intriguing work! Maybe the conductor could have toned down the accentuation in the second movement, and saved the thunder for the timpani ``outbursts.``

    I did like this symphony, but perhaps not enough to want to hear it again, except for the 'scherzo' with its pauses reminiscent of those in the same movement of Beethoven's Ninth, and the "adagio" which is clearly trying for something different than Beethoven, less flowing and more sectional. I'm not sure that the intended effect was achieved however; it seemed overall to be somewhat "choppy". I certainly wouldn't trade Tchaikovsky's First for it, which I believe was composed in the same year.
