I find this the most interesting of Draeseke's symphonies. The performance is admirably crisp and well articulated. It's nothing particularly profound, but quite enjoyable listening. Thanks for giving voice to lesser known composers.

Considering the year of composition (1886), Draesecke uses a rather traditional lanuage and does not take into account the advances of harmony and language made by Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Wagner and some others to express the "tragic' aspect of his symphony. But it is pretty well written, and th 'tragic' aspect is well rendered.

Absolutely brilliant symhony! My favorite from Draeseke's set of 4 magnificent symphonies which I believed deserve to have been part of the standard symphonic repertoire.

I feel that modern orchestras could benefit a lot from expanding the repertoire. The only new pieces they play are contemporary, and those tend to be a dissonant turn-off (to most audience members) or a mediocre neo-classical slog. There are a lot of composers (like Hans Rott) whose symphonies equal or exceed those of the established composers.

    Wunderschöne, tiefe Musik!

Albena Kechlibareva Ich finde "tief" unpassend.

The Scherzo is particularly good, harmonically and metrically adventurous and a welcome break from the two previous movements. The last movement sounds like a witches' Sabbath with its jaunty triplets.

To me this sounds more like the middle ground between the New German School and Brahms' style. Breath-takingly beautiful symphony though!

Draeseke, stylistically, was one of the most original of the neglected Romantic symphonists, yet it is hard for me to differentiate between whether or not he's an emotional or intellectual experience. This charge has been hurled at both Mendelssohn and Brahms, unlike, say, Schumann, who, for me, plays on the emotions. That is also why I like Raff and Rubinstein, in spite of whatever musical flaws one wants to draw attention to.

The symphony is in C Major because the mode of the Allegro risoluto is major. It's "Tragic" because of the slow movement, a funeral march.
