- Hi, everyone. Today we start our 2020 Tanner crab season. Traveling down to the crabbing ground is around a 6-hour journey. Then we start preparing and baiting Tanner crab pots, and launch our prospect strings.

I have said it before but it’s nice to watch a fishing show without any yelling and drama. You do it right by explaining what is going on and showing how you work. What a great family working together to get the job done !

I can't believe your Dad looks so young! Most. Commercial fishermen dry their skin out in saltwater but sometimes it is hard to tell you all apart. Low stress factors from working together is probably one of the causes. Something you are all very good at!

Hi guys I was a meat manger at Fred Meyer in coos bay Oregon and we used to use turkey drums in are little crab pots fishing off the dock the seals wouldn’t touch it and they would just destroy any fish or chicken we used and the crabs loved the stuff.I sold more turkey drums their than any other that I worked in lol
I've heard chicken works good for bait. Interesting they don't tear up the turkey. I know the commercial dungy fleet also uses mink carcasses, really greasy and fishes good. I imagine it gets pretty nasty after awhile tho.

I just started watching about a week ago. I really enjoy the content. The family being evolved is absolutely great! I like that you guys take care of all aspects of the business. Man I love watching u guys, i can't believe i just found ur channel yesterday! First it was halibut longlining then I seen u guys also do gillnetting, purse seining and now tanner crabbing! I love it.

Coldest winter we have had in quite a few years. It's good because the summers have been really dry so the cold and snow are welcome.
You guys have the perfect setup for when someone pisses you off. Stick them in the chum grinder then feed them to the fish. All evidence gone.

Small economical setup right there fellas! It must suck a little if your running from or working in weather tho.but that always dissappears when the pay check gets cut😊
The weather plays a large part in our fishing operations for sure. One reason we acquired the Emerald Isle. Somehow we have made it work all these years and continued to grow our operation.

From my folks villa in Spain I used to watch the little boats go out at night only a mile
Or so of shore fishing for squid im not sure but I think they used lights to attract them
To the surface
They do the same off California. They will use small vessels with big racks of lights to attract the squid, and then a big seiner comes along and scops them up. I think a bay full of small boats is much more romantic than the industrialized fishing we see now. Those small boat fisheries provided for many, instead of just a few.

We. Used to be a little more religious but halibut is more expensive than steak in UK

My folks ran a bad and resteraunt for 35 yrs till last yr in southern Spain just down from malaga
And they did quite a lot of fish dinners people just want good grub at right price
Haha. Posh nosh. I had to look that up to make sure I knew what you meant. I would agree with you, much rather have a nice hearty, simple meal. Food art may be satisfying to look at but I bet a lot of people go away hungry. Surprisingly we don't eat halibut that often. We really like cod and love rockfish and also salmon. Your folks must have great food and be wonderful hosts to stay in business for that long. That's a tough business, and a lot of hard work. I hope they enjoy their retirement!

As I watched your videos, I came to understand that there are seasons for catching Halibut, crabs, codfish, and other kinds of fish. Do tourists go to your place? I wish I could come and visit Alaska especially your town.

Plenty of tourists come up here especially Kodiak (where it shows footage of the boat leaving port you can see the crane at the beginning of the video used for unloading the ships and barges that come through) summer time is the main season however there is always folks coming from around the world to work and/or visit here in Kodiak AK hunting fishing ect in the end we all enjoy the wilderness breath taking beauty that Alaska has to offer

How long do you have to wait until you take your traps out of the water?
Hi Connie. On our boat we really try to be safe about weather. Knowing your boat's limits and common sense plays a big part. So we don't get scared per say - maybe nervous at times. Glad you are enjoying the videos! We soaked these ones overnight, and then after the morning haul probably 6-8 hours before the afternoon check.
What kind of bait chopper is that? I would love to buy one!
How do you steer the boat I don't see any wheels?
We use our autopilot controls to steer.

Thanks for the awesome videos, I’m really enjoying them and learning a lot. I notice that you don’t wear PFDs... or perhaps they are under your rain gear? Too bulky and could catch on the gear? I’m not advocating for or against - just curious. Cheers, Steve from Vancouver Island
Thanks Steve! Yep just one of those things, I guess we feel safe enough on our vessel. We wear them in the skiff during our gillnetting series. I guess one excuse would be that stuff snags up on them, but yeah. No real reasons.

How long do they keep the traps out? and how do they locate the traps once dropped?
On this season we hauled the gear once a day, so soak time generally was around 22 hours, depends how much we shuffled the gear and held it on deck.

Hey Mike. Sorry missed the other question. We use navigation software coupled to our GPS receiver. It lets us mark the location of all our gear so we can find it easily.

Out of curiosity what is the make and specifications for the main engine on your boat please guys?
Hi whoknots. Our main is a John Deere block marinized by Lugger. The model is 6414T, so 6 cylinder straight block, turbocharged. Rating is 220 HP.
@@EISAlaska Thanks guys, my Dad had an old wood former professional boat similar size to Fish Tale that he used for recreational fishing. She had a wheelhouse way back at the stern and a catch well open to the sea via vents in the bottom amidships. She only had a slow old air cooled three cylinder Lister/Petter diesel so he used to nurse her along at about three to five knots everywhere. She had a round bottom like a skinny walnut and an auxiliary mast so she rolled something terrible even in mild seas and still did even after he removed the mast. Really enjoying your videos thanks!
That is a wonderful story of your dad and his old wood boat. I'm sure he loved her even with all her faults. That's often how it is with boats, we love them them like family. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Cobo. The line is 75 fathoms or about 150 meters. It takes 2-3 minutes to pull up.
Why are they called tanned crabs ??
They are named after the discoverer Zera Luther Tanner. He was commander of the research vessel Albatross that explored Alaska in the late 1800's.
