I'm back re-watching, man what beautiful salmon. My family buys smoked salmon and trout, when we go to Michigan to visit my mom's side of the family in upper Michigan. Now when y'all get the salmon again. I'm ordering all I can. Awesome job !

I sailed across Biscay between France and Spain last week. I saw a lot of purse seiners with yellow flashing lights but didn't really understand what they were doing. Now I do. Thanks

I used to have a sheet of polarized plastic film. A small piece of that would have been amazing on your drone shots....possibly see the fish swimming up to the net

I sure wish someone would let me know what the is the purpose of the pole being thrust in the water off the edge of the big boat????
It thrusts bubbles down into the water which spooks the salmon back into the belly of the net. It keeps them from running out before we close and purse up.

Yeah, one of the smallest in the salmon fleet. Although she has her limitations, we make it work.
@@EISAlaska I was a limit seiner back in the day, so its a bit of a shock to see your boat lol. However, this is one of the best overall videos for explaining to people how seining works. You even see the purse line early in the set if you look really close.
Appreciate the comment, Don! We don't pretend to be experienced seiners, only been doing it a couple years. But I'm glad we can impart some knowledge clearly and accurately.

What are they doing when they poke in the water with the poles?
We are plunging a stream of bubbles into the water which spooks the fish into the belly of the net.

I've had jellyfish and it's really good. I hope Americans can get into eating jellyfish sometime, it'd help balance out populations IMO if fishermen had a bit of incentive to keep them
I didn't realize how much bycatch there could be. It didn't look like those jelly fish survived after you stomped on all of them to get them through. Grateful for the food but heart broken by the amount of needless death
Yea, sadly there is no effective way to dump them as they are so fragile. Can't pick out the salmon over the side either, the jellies cover them up, and you'll miss a lot of fish. Thanks for your comment, David.
Jelly fish literally make clones of themselves they are biologically immortal and feel no pain

You don't have the deck winch anymore do ya? Just no money in Salmon anymore? That was nice when you could catch your own bait. LOT cheaper it sounds. I'm guessing even more of a price differential now.
We still have all our salmon gear including the permit. The winch just bolts up to the stainless strips just forward of the hatch so it is easy to drop on or remove. We plan to fish salmon again, but likely just to process our own catch and maybe some pinks if the price is ok.

Is that small seiner, the Review, still running out of Ketchikan? We used to keep an open can of Carnation condensed milk in the galley. If some jelly gets splattered in your eyes, pouring milk in you eye supposedly neutralizes the stinging cells. BTW The Review was a 32 foot seiner owned by Frank Jaynes. His main boat was the Patty Lynn. I've seen recent photos of her up north at Crawfish inlet?
Not sure Jeffery. We are in Kodiak. Haven't seen a boat by that name here.
This is a professional occupation and hence I understand this is a necessity to provide food for the family and get some money in the pocket. I also understand that this might weirdly be better than farm grown fish. But my only concern is with the horrendous amount of bycatch associated with every catch that inevitably leads to ecological harm. I was curious about two things. One is whether there is a different type of fishing net or fishing technique that could reduce the bycatch and be profitable at the same time? And secondly, is there some form of regulation that ensures over-fishing does not take place? Interesting video tho. Cheers!
Hi Aditya. Thanks for the comments and your concern about bycatch.
This is always an issue that is forefront in our minds and very important to the health and sustainability of our fisheries. We do our best to minimize bycatch and be the best stewards of the resource and our environment. However there are times it is unavoidable.
If the mesh is any bigger on these nets, the salmon simply swim through. Also what you don't see in this video is that as we haul the net in, the jellyfish get trapped in pockets, and we periodically roll them out of the net. If we don't the weight from the jellyfish will sink the corkline and all the fish escape.
Also bear in mind, there are literally millions of jellies in a single bay. So many in fact, that you can see schools of them stretching a mile or more turning the bay a greenish-white color. This in no way jeopardizes the health our our ecosystem.
Farmed fish on the other hand does. It relies heavily on wild forage fish as feed. Fish that are near the bottom of the food chain and provide the foundation to so many other species.
Net pens that are situated in protected bays and inshore waters that lack adequate tidal flushing to carry away all the feces and waste generated by hundreds of thousands of fish crammed into small pens.
Farms that poison the surrounding waters with antibiotics in an attempt to control disease and parasites, that in turn infect wild runs.
Farms that threaten wild runs when net pens are destroyed by storms and captive fish escape, ending up in spawning grounds and diluting the natural gene pool.
This is why the great State of Alaska banned all fish farming. We have very closely regulated fisheries that rely on science based management. Opening and closing fishing areas based on escapement to insure those resources will be available for generations to come.
I hope you consider this when you purchase seafood. Supporting small family fishing operations that depend and protect the resources over huge multinational corporations that are only profit driven and accountable to their shareholders.

Imma just buy a cheap bass, jon, or sail boat off craigslist so I can do some rod fishing on weekends. It's been a life-long dream and I've been doing so well this year I think I'm going to be able to manage it really soon

That is a plunger. It makes a loud pop and bubbles that scare the salmon away from the opening of the net and prevent them from escaping.

The only size limit for salmon is for kings in portions of the Kodiak area. King salmon over 28" may not be retained.
Why did the guy hit the water with the stick?
That is called a plunger. It drives the fish back into the net so they don't swim out the end.

Big difference from farmed junk just look at the quality
Thanks Indiana. That farmed fish is also terrible for the environment. The wastes generated at the net sites, disease, and also relying on wild forage fish for the feed pellets. Thank you for pointing out the quality. We try to care for our catch in the best way possible, and deliver the highest quality product to our customers.

Hi Indiana. The stocks are doing fairly well. Management here is very complex and science based, so they do a good job. The biggest factors lately are environmental, with elevated ocean temperatures and very little rain last summer. So far things seem more normal this winter with lots of cold and snow. Not to be a technical douche or anything, but I’m afraid you might be liable for fish spotting with footage like that published. I can tell that you’re not spotting fish in this video but the legal terminology around fish spotting laws is rigid. I would have loved to have taken my drone out and gotten some footage this year of fish in the net and how a set runs from above, but I don’t want to implicate my boat in any legal issues. Just wanted to give you a heads up. If the cannery asked you to do this for advertising they are asking you to put your neck on the line for them. Unless they’ll foot the fine I’d consider taking this down. It is a beautiful video though, I think you did a great job making it! Hopefully they’ll loosen up the fish spotting laws soon
Thanks for the heads up. We realized that we might be putting ourselves at risk by publishing this, we spoke to local enforcement about this particular instance, and they said we were fine. We are direct market fishermen and wanted to share this with our customers and family to show the different elements of commercial fishing. We agree the law should be loosened up. Beach in Minorca id have been in serious trouble if it had got me
Thankfully we don't have those here. The big red jellies do sting, but nothing like a Portuguese. Get caught by those and its Game Over. You are lucky you avoided it.
