    30 years ago I was a prawn and lobster fisherman off the west coast of Scotland. I never remember a bad day at sea when hauling pots. This series took me back to my youth and was very pleasant to watch. Thank you.

    I've been watching your videos while isolating, you have kept me very entertaining, and educated. Your traps are so different than UK creels. But I guess its due to the restrictions. Anyway big thanks again. (and a second vote for a boat tour! How big is she? She got any history? Semi displacement? How much water she will hold in the crab tank, we call them viviers, I'm not a fisherman, I'm a really sick man who watches fishing videos as a way to relax... Your films are medicinal! 😂 Think I've watched most commercial fishing videos in English on TH-cam, your's up there at the top. Big love from the UK )

      Thanks Stubby! Definitely slow, but still had a good time. Actually this area is still open after nearly two months. We probably won't see a local Tanner fishery for a few years. This was the end of a big pulse of crab and they were really nice, heavy crab. Just not enough, lol. Next is some cod jigging and after that we plan on fishing dungeness crab. It opens in May.

    I’ve seen fish caught in deep water have issues with their air sacks, like walleye down deep in warm water. Is that an issue with any of crabs or unintentional catch you throw back?

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Lyall. It's not a problem with crab or flatfish like halibut. Rockfish and cod are definitely affected, especially depths below 30 fathoms.

      No, we haven’t had any problems with other vessels pulling our gear. We can only operate gear from 8 am to 6 pm, so no one stays out on the grounds unless they are fishing way offshore.

    Are Tanner crabs in the same family as Snow crab / Ophelia crabs?

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are! The ones we catch in Kodiak are Chionoecetes bairdi . Snow crab (C. opilio) or opies are harvested out west in the Bering Sea. Here is a link from ADFG with more info if you are interested. www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=tannercrab.main

    How long is the season? Do you keep all the crabs in the tank until the season ends???

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you'd expect it depends on the catch rate. This year it was an extended season, fishing was really slow so it dragged on for about a month. Last year it was a couple weeks. We try not to keep them on board for too long, if they start dying it could be a domino effect, usually we'll deliver after a week tops.

    not sure if anyone has asked but how heavy are those pots empty?

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They weigh around 80-100 lbs. Pretty light and easy to push around, but it also limits our range with them. We can't fish in a big swell or they will "walk" away and get lost! Thanks for your comment.

    • @EISAlaska

      Yeah, that can be a problem for sure in high current areas or big swells. I think we are going to build new pots. Same design, just shorter and a larger, heavier base so they can't tip easily.

      Simple. A lot of people get angry or offended when they hear what a load of fish is worth. What they don't realize is the cost to moor, maintain and insure a vessel and crew. The cost of permits and fishing quota. The personal risk of working the water, and bad seasons. So we prefer to keep it to ourselves, much as one might when asked what he earns a year.
