  • Hi guys. So in this video, we show you our 2019 Tanner crab season in Kodiak, Alaska. We didn't narrate so its purely the fishing experience. The haul in this season was great, and the weather was beautiful most days. We had to relocate good fishing pots on other days. Unfortunately, we had to stack-out due to the weather coming up. But we had an excellent season.
    Thanks for watching!

    I'm glad to see Tristen with you. Are crabs more expensive than halibut? I wonder how much does a piece of crab cost? It's expensive here in Korea.

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Connie. Yeah it's great to have Tristen along. Even better when Mom comes too! The store price for crab is around $15 - 20, depending on species and inventory. Halibut is usually a little more, but with covid prices are down.

    Great job guys, if you don tg mind me askin; I spent a season doin crabbing back in 80's. I'm sure things have changed. For a novice to up to Alaska and wanted to work on a vessel; what kind of qualities are they looking for

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, the fisheries are really different now. Bering sea crab is all rationalized (privately owned quota) and crew shares are small. Most other places it is limited entry. Good qualities for a deckhand..hard worker, fast learner. Cooking, mechanical, gear mending/repair are good skills to have or learn. Good humor, and ability to get along with others in poor and uncomfortable living and working conditions. Still lots of opportunities for hard working men and women that are up for an adventure!

    A great and interesting video , one question ...whats with the float in the trap /pot .Not to put a damper on things but the whole fishing fleet here in ireland has been told to tie up as there is no market for the fish except the home market which consumes only a small proortion of the total catch ,all the best .

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lord. It must be the bait bag or jar, as we don't have any floats in the pot. Right now we are still fishing, but unsure for how long. Depends on if the processing industry gets shut down. Hope things improve for everyone soon.

    Do you ever have any disputes with the processor over minimum sizes i.e if any are too small? And how is that typically resolved?

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Don. The minimum legal size for Tanner crab is 5.5 inches, and they take them all. Larger crab are always more desirable, but they typically do not do a price split on crab. However, they may pay less for skip molt and dirty crab. We have a fisherman's association that represents us in pre-season price negotiations with the processors. That seems to work well.
