Building a Large Garage 13: Coldest Day of the Season

  • On what appears to be the coldest day of the winter season, we are able to finish our interior framing, start our black steel wainscot, as well as detail our window jamb extensions. We use Royal Building Trims on our jambs and Fasten Master Cortex screws to hide where our screws are.
We also finally wrap up our exterior by Installing our trims on our porch roof that allows us to finish the wall steel.
I am using the new..(ish) Metabo HPT 7 1/4" sliding miter saw. This is the japanese inspired saw, and probably the smoothest saw I've used. They are super proud of it tho and it is going to cost some big dollars.
Also, don't take my frustration of the Hitachi (metabo hpt) nailer too seriously. it has performed exceptional for the last two years since it came out. After this job, I sent it in to their service center for a recharge and all around tune up. It now shoots like new with zero issues. It was also colder out than they are supposed to operate in.
    Metabo HPT 30 degree nailer

I worked for a company in NC called Carolina Building Systems about 20 years ago. We did post frame buildings. I was only there about 6 months but I have always loved framing and building things ever since. Watching you build and seeing the craftsmanship and seeing the awesome buildings you have put together over the last two years has inspired me. I enjoy watching your channel. You sir are a master at this. Keep up the good work.

It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan’s th-cam.com/users/postUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.

Regarding the eagle fly-by and carrying something...seeing that this was filmed during the winter and knowing that there would likely be no deer fawns nor fox kits available (both are spring born) - and the prey it had looked like a fox (by its color?) - my guess would be an orange tabby cat (feral or otherwise). There are known cases of eagle nests with numerous pet collars embedded in the nest materials and/or around the nest site. Could have also been a rabbit or squirrel too, but if it had longer legs hanging in the wind while being carried chances are it was a smallish cat.
The eagle nest about 600 feet from us here in NW WI is already busy. The pair is getting lots of fish and assorted small game (and occasional roadkill treasures), but we know they grab the random cat too.
    Love the garage build series!

I didn’t like the idea of the black/galv combo at first but now I’m thinking it’s going to look pretty good. Wonder how hard it will be to keep that black wainscot looking clean? Overall it’s a beautiful building! I’d be proud to both have built it or own it.

Saw the thumbnail and thought Kyle teamed up with blue man group?! I am surprised you tension fit that PVC into that window in such cold weather without accounting for expansion when it warms up from the Sun. Speaking of the sun you mentioned the PVC was paintable if they wanted, how is PVC not paintable? Does it have a UV stabilizer in it?

I love the PVC trim on the windows. Looks super clean and it’s durable! Question, though. I had this trim around a garage door in one of my homes and it was installed in the summer. In the cold Central Wisconsin winters, that stuff would shrink 1/8” or better. This being the coldest day during filming, and with the trim being fit tightly, is there any concern of buckling when it gets hot? Or is this thickness dimensionally stable enough where it’s not a worry? Look forward to every video and have watched your entire library!

    • @CybekCusal

Coefficient of expansion is per foot so his windows are smaller than your garage door and will have less movement.

I like the videos, guys, I’m also in post framing (pole “barning”), I have a question about roofing, I’m currently using the Merrell Moab II with the Vibram outsole, which work great (feel like Spider-Man up there) but they are not made for roofing in North Dakota winters & my toes damn near get frostbite, so I wondering what kind of footwear you guys use for roofing in the winter?

    Hey R+R Guys,
    Two Questions:
    1) What’s the life span of the moisture barrier plastic ? Also, I see the plastic has a ‘grid’ pattern, is it a special type ?
    2) What about the use of Tyvek or similar material either in lieu of standard plastic OR on the outside of the garage structure ?

Wonderful work. I admire your precision with your shears cutting those complicated trim copes. Etc.
But why -effin WHY!!?? - the black ceiling? Outside of exclamations of "cool!" from newly arrived, unthinking and easily impressed visitors, you're stuck with the need for triple the lighting and the oppression of everlasting overhead gloom for the next 40 years.
Shrinks have done human occupancy studies of interior color and paint schemes for living and work spaces. Dark overhead surfaces are at the bottom of the scale not far from "claustrophobic" with "depression leading to suicide" not far behind. You would expect theater auditoriums would benefit from dark overhead surfaces thinking less distracting light reflection etc but in fact are painted in neutral to light colors.
