HOW TO CARVE A CELTIC KNOT WALKING STICK

- Welcome back to another walking stick wood carving video. In this one I recreated my first walking stick pattern, the Basketweave or Celtic Knot. This one started as a large diameter Butternut stick. In the video I take you through the steps I followed to carve the details and designs into this beauty. Finished off with some Teak oil and paste wax and you can see the dark beautiful grain.

Very good video. Took time to show how all the details were carved. Good step-by-step explanations.

Great display of skill, patience and great teaching; thank you!
Thank you for your kind words and of course, for watching!
Beautifully executed, the pick holes really enhance the weave ❤️
Thank you! Yes, they added a nice detail and let the weave stand out from the background
That turned out amazing. Thanks for sharing your work.

Thank you! It is easier to carve than ash or maple! Thanks for watching
That is some awesome work and the teaching knowledge you give for layout be is immeasurable, its easy to learn from me your videos and get inspired.
Nice to hear… that’s my plan, get others into carving. I’ve learned by watching others so I’m happy to give a little back!
She’s a beauty. You can be proud of this staff.
Thanks for the kind words! It took a bit of time but it turned out as I had imagined it. Thanks for watching
That is amazing, lots of patients and focus.
Thank you... yes, it took a bit longer than I had planned. The wood ended up being much harder than I expected and thus took a long time to chisel out all the recesses. But it was rewarding, came out really nice. Thanks for watching
Beautiful walking stick, thanks for sharing the journey with me.
My pleasure, happy to hear you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you very much!
Very nice! I love the look you achieved in the wood!
Thank you very much!
That is amazing. Great tip about laying the pattern out so accurately. Tried basket weave 1.0, so will definitely be trying 2.0. Thanks again Jason.
Thank you! Yes, had to figure out how to perfectly divide the tapered section into 8 equal parts. Makes the pattern look better if everything is even.
This is a super nice trick, I really appreciate you sharing your time teaching us and art this is beautiful!!!

Absolutely beautiful. I really like the little cups (with the Dremmel like tool) you put in as contrast to the basket weave. I'd be proud to be seen hiking with that creation, Well done my friend !
Thank you! yes, the contrast between the background and the weave really makes it stand out. Glad you enjoyed the build!

I love both of your basketweave patterns. Both a beautiful walking sticks. I subscribed.
Thats great news! Thank you for following my channel. Glad you like what you see.
Bravo, Maestro!
THANK YOU!
Love it!!
Thank you!
Nice work and excellent craftsmanship! I made a cane because of foot surgery but I found a giant ash drum stick used for a display. I put an 8 ball gear shift for a handle and added a 4 inch piece of oak I spun to lengthen it. Its heavy but very reliable..nice work.
Sounds like you made a great stick! Thanks for sharing
Felicidades, muy bonito trabajo. Gracias por compartir.
Thank you very much!
Fantastic work.
Thank you
#DataDiggerDon Says... You did a wonderful job on this walking stick. I’ve made a number of canes and staffs over the past 55 years. It’s very satisfying. 😊 Now I want to do a basket weave one. Thanks 🙏 for sharing.
Great to hear! Thanks for watching and good luck with your stick
Beautiful stick
Thank you
Absolutely amazing....The Celtic knot looks great.. I stumbled across your video while looking for inspiration.
Some really good tips and techniques that I'm certainly going to use...
Over in the UK we are particularly in Wales we are proud of our Celtic roots.
In Scotland they have a football team called Celtic the same way you pronounce it...
However the Celtic not, or anything to do with the Celts is pronounced " Keltic "
Thanks for the video and the tips. A very nice therapeutic tutorial not overly long or complicated.
Many thanks
Charlie a true celt or kelt 😅🤷♂️
thank you very much for your kind words! Made my day... and thanks for letting me know about the word Celtic, always wondered about the pronunciation. Glad you enjoyed the video and hope your project turns out well!
I love this well done amazing job :)
Thank you very much! I appreciate it
Great tips. Thanks.
thanks for watching
Show, excellent job
Thank you!
I make walking sticks/canes. That is a helluva job you did and takes a lot of hard work and patience. Very nice.
Thank you! Certainly takes patience… but it looks good in the end
Very talented and as always you creat some great stuff
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Beajutiful wood carving. I like the trip to divide with paper. The stick itself is a great prop or decor item as a hiking stick it does noot work for me. You are lucky to find a sound piece of Butternit limb. Not seen here in NE often. Nice shop I love my draw shave RS BROOKFIELD CT
Thanks for commenting! Yes, the butternut was in great shape. Thanks for watching
Absolutely gorgeous
Thank you!
@@JasonHedrich ok how much?, I could use a better walking stick as I am disabled

That is impressive.

good job friend. awesome design. a big hug from Medellín, Colombia
Thank you very much! Appreciate it. Thanks for watching
Good job on your walking staff
Thank you!
Gorgeous! Might I suggest a proper shave horse? You'll fall in love with your draw knife all over again.
I was thinking about a shave horse. Saw a few plans for some. Just have to make room for one! Thanks
Love the workmanship! Fun project. I might call the technique your "Apple Pie weave" with the inner pick hole texturing. Looks great.
Thank you for watching! Yes, I like the way the pattern turned out… certainly a fun project
Great job
Thank you!
Very nice!
thank you!
You do do nice work. I really appreciate that you where your mask.
Thank you very much!
Outstanding ❣️wish mine looked that good. Maybe this year I can tweak it a bit more.
Thank you very much. I’m currently carving another one for a customer and I think it’s coming out better than the first. We learn every time… improve, adapt and learn. Thanks for watching. Hope your next one turns out great!
Beautiful.
Thank you!
Hi Jason. I made my walking staff by carving spirals toward the top much like a barber pole. But I went through to the other side. Much like a 3-dimensional spiral with a hollow inside. I don't have your skill with planes, etc, so used a drill and a Dremel with various bits and sandpaper. Thanks for your videos.
@@johnschuster1770 nice! That method works just fine. I use my Dremel with Kutzall burrs for harder wood as well!
Absolutely beautiful and fun to watch. By the way, Celtic is pronounced as if the’C’ is a ‘K’. Such a talent. I have to try this some time.
Thank you very much. Happy to hear that you enjoyed it
Very cool
Thank you!
Wonderful!
Thank you!
Sublime , je vais finir la mienne de cette façon . It's Amazing
merci beaucoup! Thank you
Nice.... Good job...
Thank you
That's awesome, looks like something the leader of a marching band would carry,
I wish I had a tenth of your patience.
Thank you very much! It’s easy to get lost in the process but the time passes quickly and the results were worth the effort. Would have been a bit quicker with a softer wood, but the grain was beautiful in this one. Thanks for watching
Wow! Terrific piece! I'm making a cane for my octogenarian father. It's a bit more rustic. I found a perfect "cane shape" hardwood stick. I've cut it down and hand sanded smooth. It's very comfortable for me. Maybe a little tall for him... I'm really in search of a nice finish. I may try the teak. It just needs a little color. I really want to keep the rustic, natural look about it. Thx for doing what you do!
Sounds like you have a nice stick! You can use Watcos Danish oil in a dark walnut Color to bring out the grain and darken it a bit… just a thought. Glad you are making the cane, hope he enjoys it! Thanks for watching
Nice work. I've always wanted to use a Cactus skeleton (Cholla Wood) to make a walking stick that had that woven look, whilst being also hollow centered.
Nice, I never saw that… I’ll have to look it up. Can’t beat nature for creating beautiful patterns
This is a excellent video I've watched it a couple times thanks for the lesson it's really impressive and helped me I made a 18" section from a 1" dowel . I really think it's probably easier on a wider dowel. It sure took a while. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I came back to read people's input. This (cholla wood) is crazy also thank you for sharing this type of wood. Gotta love TH-cam.
@@johndevaney3054 thanks for sharing. Yes, if the wood is a small diameter, then the pattern gets pretty tight. But you could always reduce the number of divisions from 8 to 6 or even 4 to increase the pattern size. Glad yours worked out!
Looks great 👍!
Thank you
@@JasonHedrich you are very welcome. Keep up the great work and videos.

Wow doing the complete project t with hand tools, impressive
Oops I spoke to soon
@@stevenlengyel9701 the main work was done with hand tools, only a little detail was done with the Dremel. Thanks for watching!
Subbed. Phenomenal skills
Awesome! Thank you for your support and welcome to the channel
Great skills....but the best assets in my (humble) opinion is your abiding patience, focus, and attention to detail. Beautiful work.
Thank you! Easy to have patience when it’s things we like to do. Thanks for watching
Awesome!!!
thank you so much!
The weave looks nice... that's about it.
Thanks
Superbe, j'en veux un !
Merci!
Lovely work.i must say ,your first weave is much better. It isn't a slant on the second staff,it's done well also, just my preference for closer knot work. Well done with both staffs. 🏴👍🏴
Thank you very much! The first one was nice… always good to try different patterns, certainly gave me practice with the chisel
Hi Jason, What wood was it? You used on the "celtic staff. Great video 👍
Great shirt btw, nice vid !
