Thank you for all the crazy amount of tests over the years-1000 km challenges, the polar circle tours, charging tests, Sunday driving, car sleepovers, I’ve seen them all :) You alone convinced me to finally switch from a Volvo diesel to an electric car, game over for The Sun! I’m now waiting patiently for the delivery of my ordered VW ID7 Tourer Pro S, which is set to arrive in December :)
EVERYBODY IN NORTH AMERICA! Email VW saying you want this in North America! I emailed VW Canada and they said there is currently no plan to bring the ID7 to Canada but they said they have documented my interest for future consideration of models to bring to Canada. My hope is that if enough interest is sent to them they will bring the ID7 and hopefully the wagon model to NA as well
A lot of useful insights on charging and the battery management of this ID7 from 11:33. That App also adds a lot of useful info. Thx for all the hard work Bjorn!
It's not illogical, because the height of the battery, unlike in cars with internal combustion engines, takes away space from the crew, it has to be compensated for by the overall taller design of the car, which is why electric crossover cars are so popular.
When the target demographic is "people with money", ignoring the boomer generation would make for a rather suicidal business case. The ID7 isn't exactly selling like hotcakes either. Most people with 70k to burn on a new car, or the leasing budget available, will gladly settle for some less range in order to have some easier access. And although it makes for a fantastic company car in its segment, many would opt for an i5 instead for status and interior quality when you don't necessarily need the fantastic range the ID7 offers.
Fully agree with your summary. So the ID.7 ProS as sedan with 19“, should be even better. Also the limitations of the CCS cable (cooling) was very interesting. Thanks for your awesome tests.
A6 etron performance range looks insane, hope it achieves the quoted efficiency because together with the charge speed, means Tesla is now well behind in EV tech
Great result; Tourer’s definitely on my (first ever EV) shortlist in LR/19 spec! Though I’m keen to see how you go with A6 Avant e-tron, and also Porsche’s new Macan.
After 9 years with SUVs (Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4), I'm back to a station wagon. Since it's an electric car and has the battery stored in the floor, getting in and sitting down isn't much different from an SUV. So I have no problem getting in or out of the car.
If you plug the car first then start the charging from the tesla app, it is even way less, it should be around 5 seconds and i think most of time is Tesla app to pole communication. (V4 charger)
One parameter that can affect consumption is the greater inertia of a heavier wheel, but this is not apparent when driving at constant highway speeds. If I'm not mistaken, the outer circumference of the wheel is the same regardless of rim diameter.
Bigger wheels / alloys on an EV make little sense unless it's a Model 3 Performance kind of car. For a 2.2k kg car like this, upgrading to 20" won't turn the ID7 in a sports car, but will give you more road noise, lower range and less comfort. Granted, comfort is more than fine with the 20" tyres, especially with the DCC suspension, but overall it's more a downgrade than an upgrade really.
@@pavelblaha5243Yes, the greater inertia on a larger wheel makes it more inefficient as you need to accelerate and decelerate a larger amount of mass to a higher speed.
Rapidgate also happened to me on alpitronic HYP400 with cooled cables. The air conditioning was turned off in the interior. Temp. on start charging was cca 30 deg. The next day I repeated the attempt on the alpitronic HYP300 (cooled cables). The battery temperature at the start was +-27 deg and rapidgate did not occur, car has sw 5.0. The same rapidgate happened to me in the winter during the enyaq85 test with sw 4.0 (battery temp. at the start cca 30-32deg). I'm afraid that the PRO S with higher performance will have a real problem with rapidgate.
Nice to see a car this big using less energy at motorway speed than the old e-Tron uses on a Sunday trip ! But this amazing software design where opening the drivers door messes up the cooling of batteries and the charging we may not need in 2024. Or maybe we could also do this on ICE cars, when fueling, if you open the door the car only can take half the filling speed and you have to fill the tanks slowly to avoid pump handle to stop ? I heard more outdoor time is good for you, and the fossile club claims that the gas fumes even makes this experience even better !
Great video Björn! That car is really great. Since the Pro S has a slighlty bigger battery size, cam you estimate how many minutes you would be faster?
I was thinking about the same. Besides bigger battery, it should have faster charging if I am not mistaken. So, initially, he could either drive further or charge less on the first stop and every subsequent charge stop would last maybe minute or two less. If I would have to guess, I would say that Pro S should shred 10 to 20 minutes more.
Pro S will not be sold in Norway, only GTX unfortunately. Bjørn told that when he was on the Tourer/GTX/Pro S driving event, see the videos from some weeks ago - where they displayed Pro S, but with German license plate. And Bjørn even got one for a short drive. But they were displayed for the journalists from other countries, that will get the Pro S, who attended the same event. So Bjørn will rely on followers from other countries to possibly lend him their Pro S in order to be able to test it.
@@OenkePoenke I've seen that already, but had in mind, that GTX will have a higher demand in norway, rather than Pro S won't be available. Thanks for clarifying
Thanks for another excellent video! Since you're now correcting for time spent in traffic, shouldn't the consumption also be adjusted for driving at a slower speed?
ID7 Pro S with 19” will probably save 5-10min due to faster charging and longer distance to first stop. But i think for many people the standard battery and tourer is good enough even on long trips. Still significantly better than ID4. But many people never go on long tips with car and have charging at home

Best ID so far, now one of the frontrunners. If they had started like that with the ID 3, VW would be in a much better position now. But they started too late, weak core competencies and the lack of will to change led to the ID 3 disaster. But I am still looking forward to a winter test
VW has a nasty habit of introducing new models (new techniques) too soon. Same with ICE vehicles. They use customers as guinea pigs. Unfortunately, i'm one of them...
@@youtubebob123 ID.3 was their first electric-only car. Before that they had decades of experience with prototypes like Golf City Stromer (some of which they even released in low volume, sold/leased out to special/institutional customers) and their first EVs for normal customers were e-Up and e-Golf in 2013 and 2014, respectively. But their first real (not based on a fossil platform) EV, ID.3, was released to the market, before it was ready - and built too cheaply (cockpit materials etc) for the mass market taste, both of which ruined it's reputation. Unfortunately. Yes, they get a lot better now, ID.7 is a very god car, as are the other new versions with APP550 (which in the ID.3 only is available in the GTX, again a questionable decision). I hope they can get out of the mess rather quickly!
I dunno, I think the ID.3 is ... fine. It's got a strong foundation, so once the next gen comes out with physical steering wheel buttons and decent infotainment like the ID.7, it'll be a pretty good car.
If you go to the description of this video and open Bjørn's Google spreadsheet doc and go to the 1000 km challange tab, you'll find 5 entries for the Tesla Model Y.
It is, but offset in this test by the smaller wheels. Battery Life has tested the sedan with both wheel types and found consumption is lower with the 19s.
No because he had quite a bit of battery capacity spare at the end. If he'd driven slow for traffic AND arrived with an almost empty battery then it would make a difference.
People prefer SUV because of higher seating position. I do agree the ID 7 is a good looking EV. Too bad it doesn’t come as a plug in hybrid with an efficient tdi.
@bjornnyland The car is maxing at 500A, which is the CCS2 limit. Ie. is the 500A a limit in the car or the charger?
Because you factor in any form of delay into your time, wouldn't it be better to make an overview of how much time you need to charge the car and the number of stops you make? The only difference you can now achieve is the charging speed and the charging curve. All cars can drive 1000 km at the same time and the difference is only made during charging.
