Despite being born in 2003, the 1997 Berserk still managed to be the first anime I ever watched start to finish. And I do not regret it, damn it was so good.
The Monogatari series has a lot of dark jokes and is incredibly well written. The dialogue is top notch. But....... It has a lot of creeper moments I find difficult to suggest to anyone. Nearly every episode focuses on a different fetish. I think the movies are more direct plot rather than weird filler if I remember correctly.
