    Certain species of monkeys/apes are cannibals.
    If given the chance, a monkey will eat meat. That includes it's own kind, mice, fish, insects, ect.
    Why eat meat when they're surrounded by plants? Protein, and other minerals/vitamins that plants simply cannot provide.
    We humans, are apes. We are omnivores. Eating plants AND other animals has and always will be, necessary. Eating plants is great. Eating meat is great. You cannot change the way the world works by complaining about how hurt your feelings are by it.
    Great video as always, really interesting to watch.

      I'm not saying we all have to be vegans or vegetarians, but your statement that eating other animals will always be necessary is simply factually incorrect. You can thrive forever on a vegan diet as long as you make sure you'll still get all the vitamins and minerals you require. B12 for example, is made by bacteria. You can get them through animal products, but you can also get vegan products enriched wit B12 or take a tiny pill.

It's only rare probably because they don't find too many opportunities to eat meat. I bet a horse would be more than happy to eat raw meat if you offered it to them.

      @amicableammonite3724 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Damon Hoffman
      Hi Damon
      I hadn't heard that that was a belief among scientists. Pretty sure primates had flexible diets from very early on. Then a few specialised. Gorillas for example, are almost entirely herbivorous, whilst tarsiers are exclusively carnivorous. Now, as it theorised that tarsiers split off from all primates early on, it might be that the whole Order originated from a carnivorous common ancestor, and omnivory proliferated later.
      In any case, the video would be irrelevant to our own evolution since the ancestral forms of both capuchins and humans may have undergone various dietary changes over the generations following our last common ancestor. :)
      I don't know about capuchins and their ancestors, but almost all hominids seem to have been dietary generalists, including our direct ancestors.

    • @liamhajek1770

      Animals like chimps are often regarded as "herbivores", while in actual fact they aren't. Primate diets are well varied, especially during different times of the year when certain food sources may be scarce. Chimpanzees will hunt and kill other primates so thy can get extra protein (very nutritionally important), while also eating fruit and foraging for honey and insects. Gorillas and orangutans will also often eat insects when they find them. Its likely that our early ancestors ate animal products when they could find it (similar to chimps), while having a diet that probably consisted of mainly plant material until about 3-2.5 mya, when hunting and animal products became a larger part of the human diet.

    • @CheLudo037
      @CheLudo037 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Human diets evolved but anatomically we still have the physiology of frugivore animals (like our ancestors and our closest relatives: chimps). In fact, meat is speculated to have been a minute part of our diet, much less than we tought.
      Going back to what Liam said, the Chimps diet is made up of 95% fruit and leaves with the remaining 5% between insects, seeds, and the occasional meat. But in no way are humans anatomically omnivores. Because we eat meat does not mean we evolved solely on the basis of eating meat- like actual omnivores (e.g. bears and raccoons)

    • @mauirandall8176
      @mauirandall8176 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because this is a completely different species not an "ancestor"
      And plenty of other closer related species are vegetarian and have similar digestive systems and teeth
      You realize both the monkey and the snake have a common ancestor with humans
      "So why do scientists theorize our ancestors chewed their food and didn't dislocate their jaw and swallow it whole"

    • @selwynjacobs
      @selwynjacobs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      Disclaimer: not vegan but good lord you miss the point. Animals eat meat and kill OUT OF NECESSITY. We in modern age do not have a scarcity for food for survival. That is the difference. Has nothing to do with whether or not that veganism is "natural" for humans

    • @selwynjacobs
      @selwynjacobs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      no, I'm suggesting that humans do NOT need to eat meat (i.e kill animals) to survive in the modern age with an abundance of plant based food. You can live perfectly fine in the modern age without eating meat. Animals kill and eat meat out of scarcity for food. Most of these "Explain this Vegans" comments miss this point entirely and on the other side most vegans miss this point as well leading to this confusion in this debate.

      Lions have nothing to do with this debate. We are talking about Humans and the video is about primates and actually Lions only kill out of necessity. If their hunger is satisfied zebras can walk past them and they won't move a muscle which actually validates my point more.

      Such a dumb comment, made more painful by the fact it has 47 likes! It's preposterous that you think we should base our food choices around what wild monkeys eat. We diverged from chimpanzees (not these Capuchins) around 5 to 7 MILLION years ago. It is VERY unwise for us to stop cooking our food and stop processing our grains because of what monkeys eat or what cavemen used to do thousands of years ago (i.e. these ridiculous paleo/cavemen diets). Those kinds of diets meant we lived to 30. Today we live to 75-80. Which diet, which medicine, what lifestyle is better? A monkeys or ours!
      Plus, are you not aware most vegans are vegan because they care so much about animals, they don't want to hurt them? It's not about health or evolution. Also, do you kill all the meat you eat by crushing your prey's windpipes? Do you eat rats? The stupidity!

    • @jeffwang6460
      @jeffwang6460 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Gorillas eat mostly vegetation but they can eat meat just like us. Bonobos and chimps hunt and scavenge meat. Orangutans can even fish. Since humans comprise such a large role in the world's biosphere, it is not surprising that we act as both plant-eaters and meat-eaters.
