      Question: If you buried a box full of nonperishable foods (like Twinkies and Campbell soup) in your backyard, would those provisions become available to your Gamma World characters if they knew the right place to dig in Far-Go? :-)

    I own the 1st ed. boxed set of Gamma World as well as the Legion of Gold module, but never played it. I always thought a Gamma World campaign would be really fun, but never found anyone interested in it back when I was in high school to try it out. This module looks like a lot of fun and the chicken processing plant with the Colonel Sanders militant bird in the officer's hat artwork are what are drawing me into this module. Sadly, this retired old game system would need to be brought into a 21st century D&D 5e style update for my group to try out. Which I think would also be cool.

    Now you got me thinking of doing the prep work for a possible Gamma World game I've been kicking around for a hot minute. This and your full GW review has put Gamma World as a whole into perspective for me as a GM on how it works. I'm going to snatch up the POD of the rulebook and this adventure to have but also read through.

      I totally agree! This following type of scenario is one that I have begun but yet to finish, but the premise, is basically the same as expedition to the barrier Peaks, except that it's not expedition to the barrier Peaks. I feel like there's a million ways to incorporate future Tech into your D&D game, and that could lead to Gamma World specific campaigns, or a mixture of gamma world and Dungeons & Dragons. I know the crashed spaceship idea was the original, but it was also very unique. What is the NPC's witnessed a spaceship or time travel capsule crashing? Maybe have a Green Lantern esque campaign where the dying alien bestows power, or rather shares his future Tech with the PCS.
      You know those first level magic users people always laugh about having so few hit points and very limited if not just one spell? Well how about some plasti Steel armor , and maybe a limited capacity Blaster pistol for a Last Resort. Basically give your lower level party a Fighting Chance, and if at any point they seem overpowered, well, that's when the batteries die... Hahaha , or rather the power cells run out or whatever it is they do back then, or in the future, or... oh well oh, I'm sure you guys are picking up what I'm putting down

    A GM could attempt to mitigate the rail-roading a bit by having the chicken processing plant and meteor be optional areas. Or at least that the PCs don't need to go right to them after eating the berries. They return from their rite of passage, get their names, and as new adults are informed of the dire straits their village is in due to famine (as if they didn't already know). And that it's necessary for their village's survival for the PCs to venture forth again, looking for solutions.
    This could lead to them finding clues pointing to the chicken processing plant, or other sources of food (like a homebrew supermarket that may have canned goods stashed somewhere, guarded by monsters). Or they could investigate the impact site, to remove the source of the famine. At all times up to this point, they might encounter the badders randomly or as scripted encounters. Only by clearing out their lair will the PCs and the village be freed from their attacks.
    Basically, treat it as a normal sandbox adventure module, rather than a single long outing. The village acting as their home base.

    • @captcorajus
      @captcorajus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's pretty creative, and a great solution to the railroading problem. You could also have the meteor strike will the characters are off on their Rite of Adulthood, seeing the bright starfall.... cool ideas!

    • @richmcgee434
      @richmcgee434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@captcorajus The cards were a turn-off for a lot of people but I will say this much for it, it took a traditionally gonzo setting and cranked the dial to 11 before breaking off the knob and setting fire to the amps. Also thought the shift from the very 80s "civilization destroyed by nuclear war" motif of the earlier editions to "civilization destroyed when super-collider experiments fracture time and space" thing was a neat touch. Some people were seriously convinced that was going to happen back then, a bit of science paranoia on par with the first nuclear bomb setting the entire atmosphere on fire back in the 40s.
      Didn't hurt that the mutants, robots, and other weirdness were all pretty much fully compatible with 4E D&D either, and yes I absolutely did throw an alien saucer at my adventuring party one time. :)

    *Great video, as always... As no one has yet, you aught to do a video review of the 88' Forgotten Realms module, "Ruins of Adventure", the module that was based on the novel and the classic SSI Gold Box computer game, "Pool of Radiance"... I myself played Pool of Radiance on my Amiga back in the early 90's, then read the novel, and then purchased the module, although I never played through the module... While it might not have been as classic as the oldschool 1st edition AD&D modules, it really fleshed out the playing of the Amiga game and the reading of the novel, and it correlated closely with both of them... And with that familiar cover of Ren o' the Blade slashing his sword at the bronze dragon, Tyranthraxus, it was a classic in its own way... Anyway... Just a thought... Thanks again for all the great videos!*

    I like the mutant plants and animals in this setting. It really helps to distinguish it from other fantasy products out there. Plus the radiation theme gives it a fallout feel. I think you have done a great review Cap. However, your great overview aside, I can't say that I am interested in playing the game. I might considering reading a Gamma World story, as the world is definitely a novel one (pun intended), but I don't think the game itself would scratch my dnd itch.

      If you're interested in Gamma World books, Nick Pollotta wrote American Knights and 24-Hour War for TSR back in the 90s. They're "choose your path" style adventure books but still manage to be pretty good reads, get the crazy setting across well, and are loosely connected to each other. There was supposed to be a third one called Freed-For-All but TSR died before it was released. Maybe WotC will salvage it someday as an e-book or PoD.
      If you're a fan of "trashy" scifi/fantasy/supernatural with a heavy dose of satire I'd recommend just about everything Pollotta ever wrote, particularly the Bureau 13 series (based on the RPG of the same name), Illegal Aliens (coauthored with Phil Foglio of the old Dragon strip What's New?) and That Darn Squid God. He also did a lot of "men's adventure" genre stuff under pen names, including Deathlands (a less gonzo post-apoc setting) and some of the endless Mack Bolan and Stony Man series, which I can't endorse quite as heartily.
