In my opinion. The reason why HP starts out so high in Gamma World. Is because Gamma World 1st edition was a classless game. With your build determined more by your stats, mutations, and equipment. Then class features. There was a method of advancement through xp but it's certainly not a straight level up. My point is that they deliberately give you HP on the high end of a maxed out D&D character because you were barely getting any more if at all.
I also had a pretty fun story with where my players have ended up so far we're only two sessions in. But I'll share that when we get to mutations I think. And I think I'll be adding a new cryptic alliance based on that. I think I'll share that when we cover cryptic alliances.

4E was the best version of GW. Played a lot of 2E in the early to mid 80s. Mutant Epoch from Outland Arts is the spiritual successor of TSR GW.
